What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've never attempted to scale. I'm not sure what the process is like. I can't speak to if it's easy or difficult to do.

We have five people in our department that directly use Microsoft BI. They are professors.

While it is currently being used extensively, I cannot say that we have plans to increase usage.

How are customer service and support?

We've been in touch with technical support in the past. They've always been good and we are quite happy with the level of support that they offer us.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with IBM Cognos products before Power BI. It's very difficult to compare products as there are so many different functional, decent products.

How was the initial setup?

I didn't handle the deployment process. I can't speak to what the deployment was like.

The is no maintenance required.

What about the implementation team?

I'm not sure if we used consultants or integrators. I cannot recall what the process was like.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I can't speak to the licensing. I don't have any information related to the exact costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have looked at, for example, Tableau and QlikUp. At the moment, Power BI just seems to fit our needs the best.

What other advice do I have?

We are just a customer and an end-user.

I'd advise people to use it, know their needs and understand what they want. Do the personal work well and make sure that Power BI is the right suite for your needs. It's important to do some research before jumping in.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Helpful support, plenty of useful features, and stable
Pros and Cons
  • "I like all the tools in Microsoft BI because they all have different purposes. There are a lot of people using Microsoft BI, and everybody is using it. The users have adapted well to the technology."
  • "There are plenty of visualization tools, a lot of functionality, and documentation."
  • "I have a little problem with Synapse Analytics because it's very new. It's a product that has many capabilities, but it is not very well developed. I have to see the list of permissions from one object. I can't do this in Synapse. I have to search on the web for a solution because I don't have the tool for it."

What is our primary use case?

We use Microsoft BI in out data warehouse for analytics. We use it for many purposes.

What is most valuable?

I like all the tools in Microsoft BI because they all have different purposes. There are a lot of people using Microsoft BI, and everybody is using it. The users have adapted well to the technology.

There are plenty of visualization tools, a lot of functionality, and documentation.

What needs improvement?

I have a little problem with Synapse Analytics because it's very new. It's a product that has many capabilities, but it is not very well developed. I have to see the list of permissions from one object. I can't do this in Synapse.  I have to search on the web for a solution because I don't have the tool for it.

The engine of Synapse Analytics and the ability to export the data that has been published to the web could improve.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Microsoft BI within the past 12 months. I have been working with Microsoft BI tools for approximately 20 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft BI is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have approximately 30 people using the solution in my organization. This includes experts that make reports.

How are customer service and support?

The support is good. We created approximately two or three cases, and they had the solution for us, or they had meetings with us to find a solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Microsoft BI is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you purchase a license for a server, for users, or the professional version, you might not have to. The free version I think it can satisfy many customers' needs.

What other advice do I have?

Synapse Analytics is the engine of the data that Power BI consumes.

I would advise those that use the solution to check all the license modes that the tool has because it's very confusing sometimes. You cannot just buy the product, you need to know who needs the product, who will use it, and who will be publishing. There are many aspects to figure out that when you do it will be better for you.

I rate Microsoft BI an eight out of ten.

Effective dashboard data transfer, stable, and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "There is a feature in Microsoft BI that allows JSON data to SQL on the dashboards effectively and quickly."
  • "If someone wants an embedded solution then Microsoft BI is very good because it works on many types of data, such as JSON."
  • "I have found using Microsoft BI is not easy. For example, trying to use the auto-refresh feature is not simple."

What is our primary use case?

We provide improved dashboards for our own customers by using Power BI.

What is most valuable?

There is a feature in Microsoft BI that allows JSON data to SQL on the dashboards effectively and quickly.

What needs improvement?

I have found using Microsoft BI is not easy. For example, trying to use the auto-refresh feature is not simple.

If you like to use Microsoft BI as an embedded solution, you need to do many things in the Azure, BI, and 365 portals. it can be complicated. This whole procedure should be simplified.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft BI for approximately two months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of Microsoft BI is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not scaled the solution very much but I know it is highly scalable.

We have approximately five dashboard creators in my organization that is working on the solution.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service was very nice and responsive, when I opened a ticket they called me and emailed me but they could not solve the problem we had.

We have three technicians and one of them is dedicated to the maintenance of Microsoft BI.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used another solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very complex.

What about the implementation team?

I used a consultant company to help me do the implementation and it took approximately one month.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In the beginning, the solution cost approximately $1,000 per month, we have a Microsoft startup subscription. There is a subscription pack for startups company which we are able to have for one year.

My customers will increase their usage of the solution and they will be additional costs for their usage.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated other solutions before choosing Microsoft BI, such as Tableau. I have found that Tableau does not have a solution that can be embedded. The dashboard should be inside of our applications.

What other advice do I have?

If someone wants an embedded solution then Microsoft BI is very good because it works on many types of data, such as JSON.

I rate Microsoft BI an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Stable, easy to set up, and quite scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "The scalability overall has been quite good."
  • "As it is cloud-based, this solution is always providing us with the latest version to use."
  • "The admin view could be improved by making it more simplified to manage a users' activity and other things."

What is our primary use case?

The product can be used to get all business insights from connected data, for example, whatever is on our system, which we are using for our business solutions.

All the data can be connected and it can give you actionable insights.

There are also some AI capabilities.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very stable.

The scalability overall has been quite good.

We found the initial installation to be very straightforward.

What needs improvement?

The admin view could be improved by making it more simplified to manage a users' activity and other things. That would be quite helpful.

It could be more user-friendly in general.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for three years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is great. There aren't issues around bugs or glitches. It doesn't freeze. I haven't experienced a crash. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability has been good. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so.

Right now, we have 200 people using the solution.

How are customer service and support?

I've dealt with technical support in the past. It's okay. I don't have any complaints at all.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before we had this solution, we used some internal software development using normal SQLs and JavaScripts. We also take advantage of our SQL Server.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward and simple. It's not a complex process. A company shouldn't face any issues handling it.

We only needed two people to handle the deployment and maintenance aspects of the product. It's one manager and one developer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We deal with both monthly and yearly licenses, which are coming due soon.

What other advice do I have?

As it is cloud-based, this solution is always providing us with the latest version to use.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten. We're mostly quite happy with its capabilities.

I would recommend the solution to other users and organizations.

Stable and useful for generating BI reports
Pros and Cons
  • "It seems stable. I haven't heard of any difficulties from my clients that utilize Power BI."
  • "Power BI could be improved by implementing more options for data integration. Nowadays, the cloud takes care of scalability and security. As we all know, data sources are increasing, so we get data from a variety of streams. But if we could get the downstream data into the database and update the reports more easily, Power BI would be better."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case is to generate BI reports.

What needs improvement?

Power BI could be improved by implementing more options for data integration. Nowadays, the cloud takes care of scalability and security. As we all know, data sources are increasing, so we get data from a variety of streams. But if we could get the downstream data into the database and update the reports more easily, Power BI would be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

My company has been working with Power BI for five to ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It seems stable. I haven't heard of any difficulties from my clients that utilize Power BI.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have never contacted technical support.

How was the initial setup?

I didn't install this solution, our IT team took care of it.

What about the implementation team?

Our in-house team took care of implementation. It should take a team of two to three to deploy and maintain Power BI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't own the licenses — our clients do, and we work for them as engineering partners.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Tableau is another option.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Power BI, but it depends on one's business requirements. Tableau is another option, as well as a few other tools. My recommendation depends on business needs, budget, and the exact type of reports they need.

I would rate Power BI an eight out of ten.

I like its drill-down feature and overall ease of use
Pros and Cons
  • "I like Microsoft BI's drill-down feature and its overall ease of use."
  • "The setup took a lot of tinkering with InfoSec to allow us to do stuff."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case for Microsoft BI is reporting. It comes with the Microsoft 365 E5 license. Then you just need to secure and harden it. That took a bit of time, but you can open it up and let people use it after that. There is a desktop component that they can work on that's independent of the Microsoft license. In that case, they can create files that are like dashboards.

What is most valuable?

I like Microsoft BI's drill-down feature and its overall ease of use.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Microsoft BI for about eight months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft BI has been stable so far.

How are customer service and support?

Microsoft's support is pretty good.

How was the initial setup?

Installing Microsoft BI was relatively straightforward. It just took a lot of tinkering with InfoSec to allow us to do stuff.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Microsoft Power BI nine out of 10. If you plan to implement it, ensure that you harden it, so you do not leave it wide open. Otherwise, you're vulnerable to data leakage.

A powerful and easy-to-use platform with a lot of connectors
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature would be the abundance of connectors. It is also easy to use."
  • "It is a very powerful platform for BI."
  • "It is easy enough. I don't see any real substantial improvements that are needed. It is great as it is, but its interface could be a bit modern."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature would be the abundance of connectors. It is also easy to use.

It is a very powerful platform for BI. It has everything that you want from BI.

What needs improvement?

It is easy enough. I don't see any real substantial improvements that are needed. It is great as it is, but its interface could be a bit modern.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for six years. I am using the online version. So, it is the latest one.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has improved over the years. There were problems a few years ago, but now, it is way better.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is fine. I had to reach technical support a few times, and they have been very good in the last two years.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Compared to others, I think it is reasonable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I tested a few other similar products before deciding on Power BI.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to just try it. I would rate it a 10 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Dashboards are helpful, but it needs better metadata management for enterprise clients
Pros and Cons
  • "Microsoft BI's dashboards are helpful."
  • "Microsoft BI is stable."
  • "Power BI could have better metadata management. It's easy to use for a single person. However, it lacks an enterprise-grade metadata management system, which can be a problem if you're doing an enterprise deployment with multiple users."

What is our primary use case?

It depends on what the client needs. I've got multiple use cases for Power BI. There's no single one that stands out. But generally speaking, my clients primarily use Power BI for financial and sales reporting.

What is most valuable?

Microsoft BI's dashboards are helpful.

What needs improvement?

Power BI could have better metadata management. It's easy to use for a single person. However, it lacks an enterprise-grade metadata management system, which can be a problem if you're doing an enterprise deployment with multiple users. Microsoft could add some more features to its normal reporting capabilities.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Microsoft BI for about 18 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft BI is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are limitations and license restrictions. So if you're an enterprise that needs to increase the volume of data and users, you normally have to go to higher license models.

How was the initial setup?

Microsoft BI is mostly easy to set up.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

At the entry level, it's affordable, but as you scale up and have more needs, it becomes expensive because you get tied into the whole Microsoft stack.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I also work with MicroStrategy. Out of the two, I would recommend MicroStrategy. They have what they call the Semantic Graph and Enterprise-Grade Semantic Graph. I think the technology is fantastic. However, doing business with MicroStrategy is fairly difficult and complex because of all processes involved, but the technology is probably the best in the market.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Microsoft BI seven out of 10.

It's easy to conduct analysis but needs more work to make it stable
Pros and Cons
  • "Microsoft BI is better than most solutions we have, and it's pretty easy to conduct analysis with it."
  • "Microsoft needs to do some more research and development to make it more stable."

What is our primary use case?

In our sector, we're dealing with lots of FinDocs and routine FinDoc activities. So all these things are managed locally, with data coming from some secondary source. By that, I mean our in-house technicians provide a data service that is locally developed on our end, and we analyze data in Microsoft Power BI. We have about 10 to 12 users working with it.

What is most valuable?

Microsoft BI is better than most solutions we have. It's pretty easy to conduct analysis with it.

What needs improvement?

Microsoft needs to do some more research and development to make it more stable.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Microsoft BI for about six months.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think Microsoft BI is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We have some technical partners from Microsoft, so we contact them for any issues.

How was the initial setup?

Installing Microsoft BI is fast and easy. We just downloaded it from Microsoft. That's it. It only takes about half an hour. It takes a little longer for the overall deployment, depending on the data volume. If we're getting the data from a secondary source, it depends upon both the source and volume. The greater the volume, the greater the time. Usually, we can manage to get it done in one or two hours plus the testing. It takes around four people to deploy and manage the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We haven't thought much about licensing because we're still dealing with some administrative hang-ups. Once all these things are resolved, then we go for the license. It is in process.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Microsoft BI six out of 10. I would recommend it.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
