What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is highly scalable. It supports the cluster configuration with the hundreds of nodes, the performance is good. The data volume Oracle Database consumes is quite scalable.

I haven't seen huge installations with petabytes of data but I know the solution has good capabilities. If the solution did not have good capabilities the major institutions would not use it.

How are customer service and support?

For my region, all the Oracle support technical support is from India. I have some experience with interacting with them. There have been very few times I have created service requests. Most of the information I am able to find from their knowledge base is available on their website and other resources.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used Postgres, MariaDB, and Informix.

Oracle corporation invests a lot into its core technology. For example, if you compare it with Postgres, it is capable to handle heavy workloads. Additionally, with Oracle Database you can make very complex database architecture. In freeware solutions, you have to employ 10 times more database administrators than for those who use Oracle. It requires a lot of people for freeware databases.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is simple. However, in order to install it correctly, you have to have some experience. You must know where the data must be put. It is better to have assistance when installing the solution.

The length of time of the installation depends on the installation environment.

What about the implementation team?

Oracle Database requires a lot of maintenance and the amount depends on the scale and the initial requirements. Each project can be very different.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of Oracle Database is quite high compared to other solutions. It has a lot of options, such as security for partitioning and real application clusters. These options are not for free. Once you want to use it, you have to pay extra.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate Oracle Database an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Makes building storage capacities and queries easy but scalability is a weak point
Pros and Cons
  • "A really large and very useful language to process data."
  • "An area for improvement would be query performance - in some cases, it's really, really hard to make it run faster."

What is our primary use case?

I use this solution for transaction processing and analytical queries from the data gathered from other systems.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the easy ways to build storage capacities and queries. It's a really large and very useful language to process data.

What needs improvement?

An area for improvement would be query performance - in some cases, it's really, really hard to make it run faster. In the next release, I would like to see some analytical queries and machine-learning integrations built directly into the database.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for about ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a very stable and robust database.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is a weak point of Oracle databases because even if we use Real Application Clusters, they do not work as if they were a cluster. They work like units, and they divide the connection but don't process the data in all the clusters.

How was the initial setup?

Now, the setup is straightforward, but in the beginning, it was very painful because it needs a lot of operating system configurations to work properly. The last time I deployed Oracle Database, it took me around thirty to forty minutes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I understand that Oracle is very expensive compared to other databases.

What other advice do I have?

Oracle databases don't always comply with all necessities and use cases, so make sure to look at and understand those before choosing Oracle. I would rate this solution as five out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Effective real application clusters and responsive technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The technical support from Oracle is good and responsive. I used them for security updates and patches."

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the Oracle RAC.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Oracle Database within the last 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have not had any bugs or glitches, the solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is easy to scale.

We have approximately 200 people using this solution in my organization.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support from Oracle is good and responsive. I used them for security updates and patches.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup is fine, but it depends on many factors.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of Oracle Database is too expensive and especially for individual environments. The pricing model is not clear, if I want to run it on a virtual environment, I still need to license the whole physical box.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

    I have evaluated MySQL.

What other advice do I have?

My advice is to others wanting to implement Oracle Database is to first look at the open-source products, such as MySQL, because sometimes they can do as good of a job as Oracle Database.

I rate Oracle Database an eight out of ten.

A highly secure and stable database solution that is easy to implement

What is our primary use case?

I use Oracle Database for the server from Microsoft.

    What is most valuable?

Big companies and millions of smaller businesses need Oracle Database because it's secure. The implementation of services is good for data security in Oracle. Implementing higher availability is also good. Whenever one side goes down, the other side will be up. I like using Oracle Database in Oracle x86 Servers. It's more comfortable to use Oracle Database in this situation.

    What needs improvement?

It would be better if they had a license management service.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Oracle Database is very stable.

    How was the initial setup?

    The initial setup is easy.

What other advice do I have?

I would tell potential users that they need to use Oracle Database if they need security. It's great and the best. You can also use various software in our database.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Oracle Database a ten.

Very powerful, providing easy migration between databases
    Pros and Cons
    • "The ease of migration between databases."
    • "The connection can be slow due to the distance from the provider."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution as a platform. Our applications for the product are related to human resources, social environment, and environmental. We are Oracle customers and I'm a database administrator.

How has it helped my organization?

The main benefit we've had is from making the move from on-prem to cloud - it has saved us a lot of money.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature for us is the ease of migration between databases. It's quite powerful.

    What needs improvement?

Our main problem is that the connection is slow and that's because it's the Latin version. We are in Peru and the providers are in the United States. There's no other data center that can implement our database.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

In general, the customer support has not been good. We'd get emails about interruptions and shutdowns over weekends and that affected us. In the first year, we were assisted by a Colombian consultant but the second year things changed and the support came from Chile. When we were dealing with Colombia we'd get a response to our requests within the hour but when the support moved to Chile it could take two days to get a response and even then the problem was not necessarily solved.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy, they use wizards and you can create an instant database in minutes. We had the assistance of a Colombian consultant for implementation but I was responsible for the deployment, executing scripts and applying fixes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is expensive and then there is a support fee which is another 20% of the cost price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We've decided not to continue with the Oracle database and we're migrating to SQL. One of the main reasons for migrating is the cost difference, Oracle's license is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I don't have anything against Oracle, I think it's the best database in the world. It's completely different from SQL and more powerful. The latest Oracle product, the Autonomous Database will be a leading solution. SQL is better for medium size companies and Oracle is geared to enterprise organizations.

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    Hybrid Cloud

    Good performance and interface
    Pros and Cons
    • "I like the performance power and the interface of the solution."
    • "Problems can arise if there are too many requirements or a lot of details which must be applied to connect the software to the database."

    What is most valuable?

I like the performance power and the interface of the solution.

    What needs improvement?

I encountered problems when developing solutions or when the developers needed to know or check many things to connect to the database. Problems can arise if there are too many requirements or a lot of details which must be applied to connect the software to the database. There may be a need to have the client in the host machine and have other files registered. Once the connection is made with the database the problem is resolved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database for six years.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is privately deployed and solely with on-premises products.

    I develop solutions.

I rate Oracle Database as a nine out of ten.

A stable and scalable database solution with a useful query optimization feature
    Pros and Cons
    • "I like the query part and the optimization of the query to get the data. I also like its speedy recovery and stability. In the security part, the loss of data is minimal for any crashes that could happen. First of all, it might not occur, or if it happens, the recovery of the data is smoother than others."
    • "It would be better if the administrator part could be simplified. At the moment, we need specialized skills for managing or administering Oracle Database. If that is simplified, my juniors or basic database engineers could use it. Right now, we need specific administrative skills to manage the Oracle Server."

What is our primary use case?

We are using a BI solution and Oracle Transaction Server for transaction data. So, transactional data is being stored in the Oracle Database.

    What is most valuable?

I like the query part and the optimization of the query to get the data. I also like its speedy recovery and stability. In the security part, the loss of data is minimal for any crashes that could happen. First of all, it might not occur, but if it happens, the recovery of the data is smoother than others.

    What needs improvement?

It would be better if the administrator part could be simplified. At the moment, we need specialized skills for managing or administering Oracle Database. If that is simplified, my juniors or basic database engineers could use it. Right now, we need specific administrative skills to manage the Oracle Server.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been dealing with Oracle Database for more than a decade.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is definitely scalable. For the project we are working on, the team size is around 500 to 600 engineers. But not everyone is working on Oracle. Even if we go with the 10% or 5% count, you still end up with 20 to 50 people who are dealing with the SQL queries, day in, day out.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this database solution to potential users, but it depends on their specific business needs.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Oracle Database an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A stable database solution with high performance levels
    Pros and Cons
    • "Oracle Database is very stable. In terms of stability and performance, Oracle is super. On the database side, Oracle is number one in our tests."
    • "The price could be better. Oracle Database could also be easier to scale."

What is our primary use case?

We are running Oracle databases in Oracle Exadata.

    What is most valuable?

Oracle Database is very stable. In terms of stability and performance, Oracle is super. On the database side, Oracle is number one in our tests.

    What needs improvement?

The price could be better. Oracle Database could also be easier to scale.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Oracle Database for quite a long time, and probably since 2002.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Oracle Database is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database could be easier to scale. As Exadata is not easily scalable, Oracle Database is also not easy to scale. We have over 10,000 applications running on Oracle Database.

How are customer service and support?

We use a local Oracle company for support, and they help us whenever someone has an issue.

    How was the initial setup?

We have done a lot of Oracle Database installations, and we are pretty familiar with it. So, it's easy for us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The Oracle license is quite expensive, and we pay on a yearly basis.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Oracle Database to new users if they can afford the price.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Oracle Database a ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises
