Offers high availability and good third-party integrations, but is very expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is stable."
  • "Technical support quality has dropped recently. They aren't as helpful or responsive as they used to be."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is primarily used for any persistent storage of data. It's a database and Oracle is very strong on the relational database side. It's great for NoSQL. Oracle Database is a strong relational database management system.

What is most valuable?

The solution integrates well with third-party products.

The high availability that it provides is definitely one of a kind. It's active-active and high availability.

The solution is stable.

The scalability is good.

They have worked to make the initial setup a bit easier.

What needs improvement?

They have improved a lot, however, recently it has been known that Oracle Database is very complex to manage. You need skilled people to manage it these days in the industry. The databases, which are very prevalent, are very developer-friendly, and most of the tasks are automated. You don't need to have a specialized DBA to look at the database stuff. That said, the ease of management for non-technical individuals could be better.

Technical support quality has dropped recently. They aren't as helpful or responsive as they used to be.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been dealing with the solution for more than 15 years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. It has good high availability and is very reliable. there are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have found the product to be scalable. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so. It's not a problem.

How are customer service and support?

Recently, I haven't had any experience with Oracle's tech support. However, I have heard it has gone down in quality. It's harder to get in touch with them. The support requests take a lot of time to resolve. On top of that, the kind of expertise or knowledge that someone would expect from the team is a little bit of concern now. They aren't as knowledgeable as they used to be.

How was the initial setup?

While the solution used to be quite complex and difficult, now they have improved it. It's easier. That said, I can say it is still on the complex side.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Generally, when you buy Oracle Database, and if you're buying it for your own data center on the on-prem side, you have to go by the processor cores and the list price is around $47,500 for the enterprise edition per core.

It is a perpetual license; it is not something that you worry about on monthly basis. That said, they do have options now for the subscription-based model, however, there are more data points to be looked at. They have an offering called the data cloud and customer which is a subscription-based model. They can give you hardware plus some software licenses as well.

When it comes to Oracle and all the licensing policy that they have is very complex, the type of audits that they do is not really something that people welcome.

What other advice do I have?

We are a customer and an end-user.

In terms of deployments, you have an option to host it purely on-prem and you can arrange it to have some workloads on the cloud as well, as a hybrid approach. It is as if you are posting your databases on a private cloud in your own data center that way.

Normally, if someone has to look at different database options available, they would prefer an open-source product. They would go with Oracle if the application they want to host is not supporting any other database but Oracle. If a company has to go with Oracle, it is best to look into the possibility of hosting it on some cloud rather than on-prem.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten. As a solution, it is not bad. The technology is great. It provides you with the features that you need. It is just that the cost and then the type of lock-in contract that you get into is not very attractive. As a product, from features and functionality alone, I would rate it a nine out of ten. However, when it comes to cost and other things, I'd rate it lower as there are open-source database options that are very good.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Flexible, with a variety of setup options and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The support is always very helpful and responsive."
  • "The setup process can be a bit complex."

What is most valuable?

We are fine with the performance and everything they offer.

They are the market leader, therefore we don't have any problems or complaints as of now.

The support is always very helpful and responsive.

The solution is very flexible. It offers a variety of setups.

The stability is good.

What needs improvement?

While we get some performance issues from time to time, we get very good support from the Oracle support team, and those issues are sorted out.

The setup process can be a bit complex. You will want to have someone on-side that can help you navigate the process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with the solution for 20 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For the most part, the performance is good and it offers good stability. There aren't really bugs or glitches. it doesn't crash or freeze.

It's a market leader in RDBMS. It is quite good, compared to other RDBMS such as Db2, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has been great. As part of operations, people just get some issues, sometimes, however, there might be different reasons for that that may not be related to Oracle itself. Overall we are fine with all the services it offers.

How was the initial setup?

This is a very, very vast database, and it offers a lot of architecture. We can go for grid architecture or rack architecture. We can go for the long architecture or we can go with a simple standalone database. Depending on what an organization wants, we can adapt. However, the implementation also depends on what you want or your organization wants. If you're looking for very complex data centers, for example, having one of the primary databases running in London, and your secondary database or DR site running in Singapore, and both are running on a different rack, you can do that, however, the setup process will be unique to you. There isn't a standard time it takes. It offers a lot of flexibility. Obviously, if you go for the high scalability, high availability, all those features, which are provided by Oracle, then it becomes slightly complex, and we need a dedicated team to handle all those setups.

What other advice do I have?

If you have the requirement of RDBMS and if you're posting logs there, then, I would suggest that you should go for Oracle. It all depends on your organization's technology roadmap. If a company is more inclined towards Microsoft technology, and they're inclined to Azure cloud, then probably they should go with an SQL Server. However, if they're inclined towards AWS or if they don't have any such consent, and if their costing allows, then Oracle is the best bet.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Quick to deploy, reliable, and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is very easy to use in general."
  • "I would like to see more integration with other databases and the cloud as well as Microsoft's Office 365."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution to house our database applications and as a part of our ERP.

What is most valuable?

The solution has been scalable.

The stability is good. We find the product to be reliable.

The solution is very easy to use in general.

Its initial setup is quite straightforward. The deployment is fast.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see more integration with other databases and the cloud as well as Microsoft's Office 365. It should have, for example, a certificate that is then authorized in Oracle Databases so that easy division will be possible with other cloud solutions.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for eight to ten years at this point. It's been about a decade, or just under. We've used it for a long time in general.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is reliable and quite stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. The performance is great.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is quite scalable. It's not a problem if you need to expand.

We have about 18 to 20 users on the product currently. We have managers, admins, and engineers on the product.

How are customer service and support?

We do occasionally deal with technical support. For example, in the case of the wrong data entered in the ERP, support is required to purge out the wrong information.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a different solution previous to Oracle. We've always used Oracle. We started using it at version 6 around 2006 or 2007.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and simple. The deployment takes a maximum of one and a half to two hours. It's not difficult.

We only have and need one person for deployment and maintenance tasks.

What about the implementation team?

We are able to handle the installation ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have a license for Oracle Database. You need one in order to use it.

What other advice do I have?

In terms of versions, we are using currently 11G and we are planning to move to 12G in a couple of months.

I'd rate the solution at a ten out of ten.

I would recommend this solution to others considering implementing it.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Stable, with good technical support, but very expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "The scalability is quite good."
  • "They should be putting more emphasis on the Windows platform. Usually, they run very well on the Linux platform, however, their performance on Windows is a little bit lower quality."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the solution for our online transaction system - that is debit cards - and we are using it for our loan origination system as well. There are two systems that are deployed on it and we are getting a good experience from it.

What is most valuable?

The Data Guard feature is the most valuable aspect of the solution.

The initial setup is pretty straightforward.

The solution is stable.

The scalability is quite good.

I have always found the technical support to be very helpful.

What needs improvement?

The solution is expensive. They should work at making the pricing more reasonable.

They should be putting more emphasis on the Windows platform. Usually, they run very well on the Linux platform, however, their performance on Windows is a little bit lower quality.

They have to work on their flashback feature. Right now, it is a cumbersome process.

It is actually very heavy on the storage. If Oracle could do something about it, that would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for the last 23 years at this point. It's been over two decades. I've used it for a long time.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is quite good. there are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is quite scalable. You can add as many servers as you would like to. It's not a problem.

The product is not deployed for the user base. It is deployed for the backend service. The amount of actual users is only one or two people.

We do not have plans to increase usage. The cost is too much of a factor now. I'm not sure if I will be using it anymore.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has been great. I am satisfied with the level of service we receive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have Oracle Database and SQL Central Server Database in our environment. We're moving to SQL based on the generally high cost of Oracle.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward.

I'm very comfortable with Oracle as well, so for me, it was very, very convenient. I can't speak to the end-user or a user with the lower skillset in terms of their capabilities of setting it up. However, if you have some experience with Oracle, it's not bad.

The deployment only takes 45 minutes to an hour. It doesn't take long.

What about the implementation team?

I have installed it personally and it is very straightforward. However, it is possible to use an integrator or consultant to get the proper assistance.

What was our ROI?

We don't really calculate the ROI on the database itself. We calculate the ROI for the system. On whichever system is deployed on a database, we calculate it on a community basis. Therefore, of course, we get the ROI from whatever technology we deploy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While I'm a fan of Oracle as a solution, I am not a fan of the cost. It is very expensive.

For medium to small organizations, the current cost might not be viable as compared to SQL Server, which is much cheaper than Oracle and provides approximately the same functionality that they have.

You can choose a core-based license or a user-based license. There are no extra costs above the standard licensing fees. Typically it is a five-year contract that can be paid monthly or yearly.

What other advice do I have?

We are a customer and an end-user.

I'd advise those considering the solution to always keep their logs on a different database. Also, they have to make sure the parameterization they do in their initial setup is very, very extensively thought out.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Partitioning is most valuable, and it is stable and fairly easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "Partitioning is most valuable."
  • "The setup for Enterprise Manager Grid Control can be a bit easier."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for OLTP and data warehouses. We're using versions 10, 11, 12, and 19.

What is most valuable?

Partitioning is most valuable.

What needs improvement?

The setup for Enterprise Manager Grid Control can be a bit easier.

The additional options are expensive. If you want to buy a rack, partitioning, diagnostics, or tuning, those options are expensive, but it is difficult to say if it is a negative or not. We've bought the product, and we use it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Oracle Database for 30 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is really stable. Its stability is fine, but just don't make any changes. The more changes you make and the more developers you've got, the more unstable it's going to be. So, if you've got a stable environment in terms of development, then it has to be stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability depends on how much money you've got. It depends on the quality of your hardware. Scalability is not an Oracle problem.

In terms of the number of users, we have maybe 5,000 people who we can log on to one system and put in expense claims. We don't have plans to increase its usage.

How are customer service and support?

They're normal. We don't make many calls. We have maybe six calls a year with Oracle support, which is not a lot. Our environment is pretty stable. It is really stable, and we haven't had any outages. When it is smooth sailing, it is easy.

How was the initial setup?

I did the setup, and it was fairly easy. I have been doing it over the last 17 years.

What about the implementation team?

I did the setup. For its maintenance, one and a half people are enough.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You buy it when you need it, and then you pay the maintenance. We bought the licenses over 10 years ago. We haven't changed our licenses. We are not buying new licenses, and we are not looking at other devices. So, it is difficult to say whether it is cheap or expensive. There is nothing to compare to.

The additional options, such as a rack, partitioning, diagnostics, or tuning, are expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise making sure that you train properly. I would rate this solution an eight out of 10.

High performance, reliable, and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance and reliability are the best features of the Oracle Database."
  • "The client-side of Oracle Database could improve. The client graphic user interface works on Java and sometimes it freezes, these should be fixed."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle Database for automatic banking systems to store the information about the accounts, the card being used, and all the other customer profile information.

What is most valuable?

The performance and reliability are the best features of the Oracle Database.

What needs improvement?

The client-side of Oracle Database could improve. The client graphic user interface works on Java and sometimes it freezes, these should be fixed.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database for approximately 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is scalable, it is one of the most scalable solutions.

We have approximately 1,000 users using this solution. We plan to increase usage in the future.

How are customer service and support?

The support is very good, they have done some presentations in Armenia and we are working very closely with them.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is easy for a person who knows how to do it and for a person who is not familiar with this kind of tool it is difficult. However, generally, it is okay for me because I have worked with a DBA before.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others this is a stable and scalable product, which you need to use in case you have, for example, huge data. If you would like to have more transactions and a secure platform, this is a good choice.

I rate Oracle Database an eight out of ten.

High-performance solution with lots of options for security, diagnostics and tuning
Pros and Cons
  • "Most of our customers have been using multitenant options. Advanced Compression and Advanced Security are the most valuable features in most customer environments."
  • "The primary concern is that Oracle is highly restricted in terms of the approved technologies where we can freely deploy Oracle Database or any other Oracle product."

What is most valuable?

It depends on the environment. Most of our customers have been using multitenant options. Advanced Compression and Advanced Security are the most valuable features in most customer environments. And many customers are also leveraging Oracle Diagnostic and Tuning Packs to enhance the performance of the database.

What needs improvement?

The primary concern is that Oracle is highly restricted in terms of the approved technologies where we can freely deploy Oracle Database or any other Oracle product. So, for example, if we deploy Oracle products on VMware vCenter or any virtualized environment using VMware technology, we need to license a complete cluster and a complete vCenter. So that is the costliest option for us. And since Oracle doesn't approve of Google Cloud infrastructure, that means we cannot leverage the dynamic and flexible features of Google Cloud. We have multiple offerings from Oracle and our side on this one. So if we want high performance, we have to get packs or options already bundled with Oracle Database at a slightly higher price. But they are cheaper if we purchase them separately.

Also, Oracle provides the Extreme Performance Database options where you have all the features already included with the database, which will overcome all the limitations that I mentioned earlier. So we can leverage different options, but the most important is to know what we need and how much we are ready to invest in setting up the Oracle solutions. Considering certain limitations on storing big data, so that's where Oracle lacks some features. But otherwise, it is one of the best databases available.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working on Oracle Database and the complete Oracle Stack for the past six years. I'm not doing any implementation development work on Oracle products. I'm only managing their compliance part.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is pretty scalable. And if you are planning to implement or leverage the containers, Oracle has recently added enterprise containers into their stack, so we can leverage that technology to enhance the scalability of the database.

How are customer service and support?

So with Oracle, technical support is provided mainly by the technical teams who are actually working on the packaging and deployment of the Oracle Database or other products.

How was the initial setup?

Installing Oracle Database is pretty simple, and Oracle also provides a starter database, which will allow you to evaluate whether you meet the specifications or not. Then you can go ahead and deploy the other features and management packs.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle Database has two different types of licenses. One is the Named User, and the other is the Oracle Processor. So Oracle Named User will cost you about $950 per license, and Oracle Processor will cost you around $47,500 per processor. And on the Named User part, you need a minimum number of users to ensure that you'll buy the minimum number of licenses. So for Enterprise Edition, the minimum requirement is 25 Named Users.

And you need to pay to add options and packs. All the options and packs are available at extra cost, but Enterprise Edition includes Spatial and Graph at no extra cost. Starting last year, Oracle offered Spatial and Graph for free with the Enterprise Edition. Then there is Standard Edition, a minimal deployment option. So you can deploy Standard Edition on a server with a maximum of two sockets. That's why Enterprise Edition is typical in most cluster and complex environments.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Oracle Database has various remarkable features like Advanced Security and Advanced Compression. Oracle Database has high availability and high performance. So in those terms, Oracle Database is much more reliable than its competitor. That's why most large enterprises choose Oracle Database technologies over others. But there are other databases with some features that Oracle doesn't have. For example, with MongoDB, you can store multimedia file content and anything, and they can hold a greater amount of data. So that's where they have an advantage on Oracle Database. And most of the social media sites, like Facebook, have implemented MongoDB as the database supporting their applications.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Oracle Database at eight out of 10. For those thinking about deploying the solution, my advice would to implement Oracle Database on physical servers to avoid noncompliance. And it will be less work to manage or calculate the required licenses on the physical server. If the customer wants to leverage the virtualization technology and has a more scalable environment, I would suggest having a dedicated cluster for Oracle products for licensing purposes. For example, if you keep five physical servers in a cluster, you need to license them only once. But if those five servers are running are part of five different clusters, you need to license all the five clusters. So having a dedicated cluster can save millions of dollars.

Easy to use with good performance and very good integrations
Pros and Cons
  • "The ease of use has been great."
  • "The product is pricey and expensive."

What is our primary use case?

Most of our applications are actually generating data on Oracle Database. They're connecting finance, HR, et cetera. Everything is on Oracle Database.

What is most valuable?

The stability has been very good. Its performance is excellent.

The ease of use has been great.

It's an excellent product. It's a pioneer.

The integration capabilities are very good.

What needs improvement?

The product is pricey and expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this product for well over a decade. We've used it for about 14 or 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the product is very good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product can scale. If a company needs to expand, it can do so.

We have both internal and external users. The amount of users ranges into the thousands.

How are customer service and support?

We do use support. We actually pay for support and we have used them to assist us during implementation. They have been very helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have a Microsoft SQL Server as well, however, a different team is working on it. I don't deal with it directly.

How was the initial setup?

While I did not actually implement the solution, I don't see where there would be any problem with the solution.

We have a technical team of 20 to 30 people who can handle deployment and maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

We have paid support. When we did an upgrade recently, we got support from Oracle in case there were any issues. They also offer support during installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This is quite an expensive product. It's not cheap.

We pay a yearly licensing fee to Oracle.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. We've been very pleased with the solution over the years.

If a company is considering implementing this solution, I would advise that they first look at their requirements. A company should look to see whether they actually need an Oracle Database or not as it's a costly solution. It may be possible that the unique company requirements may be able to be covered via a cheaper database. However, they won't know for sure until they properly do an evaluation.
