Good database with decent performance
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle is a good database with decent performance, which is fortunate because we are required to use this database for our ERP system. Even if we thought Oracle was the worst database in the world, we would still have to use it."
  • "In my opinion, the pricing of all the additional tools that Oracle provides is very complicated. The pricing model is very unfriendly for the user, and for the web vendors."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle Database for our ERP systems mainly because we provide IFS for customers and the IFS utilizes Oracle Database. We generally don't use other Oracle tools because of a bad experience with an R&D project in the past where we had to find the best solution for AI/neural network platforms.

We assessed using Oracle for these AI platforms, but we had plenty of problems with the proper setup of the test version of Oracle Cloud. Frankly speaking, we stopped testing and using Oracle in this R&D project and switched to other tools that are simpler to setup and simpler to understand the pricing. No one was sure how much would have to be paid for the platform to support our AI requirements such as natural language recognition and other things.

Because of these factors, we have essentially stopped using the other Oracle tools and we now only use Oracle Database for the ERP systems that we run for ourselves and for our customers. For this purpose, we use Oracle as a permanent database that is situated on-premises. We have quite a wide range of versions of Oracle Database amongst ourselves and our customers because many of them are older installations that are still operating. In all, there are about 10,000 users of Oracle Database throughout our customers, and perhaps 2,000 users in my organization.

What is most valuable?

Oracle is a good database with decent performance, which is fortunate because we are required to use this database for our ERP system. Even if we thought Oracle was the worst database in the world, we would still have to use it.

What needs improvement?

In my opinion, the pricing of all the additional tools that Oracle provides is very complicated. The pricing model is very unfriendly for the user, and for the web vendors.

When it comes to new features, we don't desire anything at this moment. We are completely dependent on this ERP system which we provide and we only need the tools from Oracle that our ERP system needs, and nothing more. Our only concern is the performance of the database. If Oracle could make the performance better on low-end hardware, that would be nice.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database for 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

As far as I know, we have no problems with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good.

How are customer service and support?

There have been no issues with their technical support. As I am aware, we have had issues in the past, especially with servers and other things, but today there are no special issues or problems. Everything is quite well-addressed by Oracle, in my opinion.

How was the initial setup?

The setup of the Oracle database for an ERP system is generally quite simple. There are specific installation steps that are completely scripted by the ERP system, so you simply have to do everything the documentation asks you to do, and that's all. There's nothing special or super difficult about it and we are generally able to install a database within a day.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We mainly use a special license for ERP systems specifically, instead of a general purpose license. This ERP-focused license is very simple. You just have to use Oracle Database with an ERP system and that's it.

What other advice do I have?

As databases go, Oracle Database is quite a good database with decent performance, and I think that's all there needs to be said.

I would rate it an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Stable and scalable database platform with a straightforward setup
Pros and Cons
  • "Scalable and stable database platform. Setting it up was straightforward."
  • "We'd like for its price to be a bit lower, both for licensing and support. As it is a top-of-the-line product, it's a bit expensive."

What is our primary use case?

Oracle Database is the database we use for one of our core solutions.

What needs improvement?

The price for Oracle Database could be better. It's a top-of-the-line product, so it's a bit expensive. We'd like for its price to be a bit lower, both for licensing and support. This is the only area for improvement I could think of for Oracle Database.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Oracle Database for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a scalable product.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Oracle Database was straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented this product in-house. The process was straightforward, so we could do it ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing and support pricing for Oracle Database is a bit expensive, as it is a top-of-the-line product. We pay for this product yearly.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We used MySQL.

What other advice do I have?

We are using the Enterprise version of Oracle Database, but I'm not sure about the exact version number.

I'm satisfied with this product. Oracle is a global, top database platform, so there isn't anything I'd like to change or add to Oracle Database.

We have 30 users of this product, and we currently don't have plans of increasing that number. For the deployment and maintenance of this product, we have two or three persons in charge, e.g. admins.

I have no complaints about Oracle Database, so I never got to contact their technical support team.

I'm recommending this product to others who are looking into implementing it.

My rating for Oracle Database is eight out of ten.

Secure, performs well, easy to install and has a good dashboard
Pros and Cons
  • "The dashboard may be the best solution for intelligent data management, as well as business intelligence."
  • "Technical support needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

Our company does not have an Oracle Database. We are in charge of maintenance and deployment. We have several managed services for several customers, and we administer and deploy Oracle databases in those customers.

We are system integrators who deploy projects with infrastructure and manage infrastructure services.

Our main customers are in the banking industry. In the banking environment, Oracle databases are used for a wide range of solutions.

For all bank transactions to communicate in the various Oracle databases, the data must be extracted from the host systems and brought to work at a data warehouse. With a special banking solution, it requires another banking program.

What is most valuable?

Oracle is used to deploy solutions. The dashboard may be the best solution for intelligent data management, as well as business intelligence.

We believe that Oracle in the cloud is more secure.

It is more scalable on-premises.

What needs improvement?

Technical support needs improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been providing Oracle Database for the last ten years.

We have been system integrators since the company's inception. I believe it will be 20 years that we have been working as system integrators.

We work both in the cloud and on-premises. We were born on-premises, but have spent the last five years working in a hybrid cloud model.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is scalable.

We have approximately 25 to 30 customers in the banking industry who use Oracle Database.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is okay, but some areas could be better.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our core business is in the desktop virtualization model with Citrix and Microsoft. Citrix with desktop and Citrix solutions, as well as VMware and all virtualization software-defined projects.

We put all of our solutions in the cloud. It is one of our primary focuses, but some of our clients may prefer to have some of their infrastructure in on-premises solutions.

We use all of the virtuals from all of the databases. We use both Oracle and SQL.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. It's an easy installation.

The way we deploy services and project infrastructures in the cloud and on-premises differs.

We are deploying Oracle for large systems. We are aware that our customers have large Oracle systems.

What was our ROI?

There is a good return on investments.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In the last two or three years, we have been active on the internet to research the deployments to bring to the customer.

What other advice do I have?

During the previous administration, we collaborated with our customers, and we preferred to deploy the new Oracle systems to the cloud, perhaps we are working on the journey from Oracle system to cloud, which is based in Oracle Cloud.

In general, I recommend the product. We have customers in Spain and Latin America, including Argentina, Peru, Chile, Brazil, and Mexico.

We introduce and maintain Oracle for these customers. Alternatively, one of the major customers is Bank Santander, Bank Sabadell, or Kaiser, which are large banks with operations all over the world.

We're collaborating with Oracle's architects and consulting solutions team in one part of the project and the Q&A in projects. We collaborate with Oracle consulting teams to deploy the solution in dashboards.

I would rate Oracle Database a nine out of ten.

Helpful functionally, good support, and reliable
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Oracle Database is all the functionalities. When we write a code we sometimes have to create an explicit functionality to process the data that we want. At times we find that there is already existing functionality in data created by Oracle itself, it is helpful."
  • "The integration can be made much easier for the Oracle tools, for example, Oracle Database or OPI. The integration sometimes can be a little complicated for us because we have to do a number of integrations with other tools, such as Oracle computation. The integration could be more streamlined and easier to work with."

What is our primary use case?

I worked on private on-premises and hybrid cloud deployments.

We use Oracle Database primary for business intelligence in the telecom domain. We are generating all of our KPIs. Additionally, we use it for data warehousing purposes.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Oracle Database is all the functionalities. When we write a code we sometimes have to create an explicit functionality to process the data that we want. At times we find that there is already existing functionality in data created by Oracle itself, it is helpful.

What needs improvement?

The integration can be made much easier for the Oracle tools, for example, Oracle Database or OPI. The integration sometimes can be a little complicated for us because we have to do a number of integrations with other tools, such as Oracle computation. The integration could be more streamlined and easier to work with.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database for approximately 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a very stable solution. If we find a bug or issue then we have to log those ourselves with Oracle. After some time we receive a patch update to fix those problems.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database is scalable.

I would recommend Oracle Database for large enterprises because the smaller companies would not be able to afford it.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support of Oracle Database is okay. The last time I was working in South Africa and when I have to use the Oracle support of South Africa it was poor. We did not receive a proper response from Oracle then. Every time we had to escalate our issues or we had to log with Oracle to have the higher-level management. Eventually, our issues were resolved. However, I have never had an issue with the support from Oracle in India or the USA.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation of the Oracle Database can be a lengthy process. It is not difficult, but it can take a lot of time.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I do not have first-hand knowledge of the price of the support. However, I have heard from my seniors or the experienced people who work on the pricing and scaling, the price of Oracle is a bit higher. The reason is Oracle provides enterprise-level applications, only large enterprises can afford Oracle applications or tools.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Oracle Database an eight out of ten.

I rated the solution an eight because there is still a lot of improvement needed. The user experience could be better, the interfaces could improve.

I know that there are a couple of new applications already out by Oracle, such as Oracle Analytical Services and Oracle Analytical Clouds, which are more user-friendly. Oracle needs to make databases more user-friendly and easier to work on. At this time we have to login into the front end and the backend to do a lot of configurations and it would be much better if we had some type of interface to work on.

If I want to teach someone who is totally new to this environment, he or she might have worked in some other applications similar to Oracle Database, such as SQL Server or MySQL, but if I want them to learn in Oracle it can be difficult for us to teach them. It would be much better if the overall solution was easier to use.

Easy-to-use interface, simple to deploy, and can be customized to your processes
Pros and Cons
  • "The interface is easy to use."
  • "Better integration with other databases would be an improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle as an in-house development database.

What is most valuable?

The interface is easy to use.

What needs improvement?

The reporting can be improved. SAP has more reporting features than Oracle.

Better integration with other databases would be an improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Oracle Database for 20 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We cannot scale this solution. We have about 1,000 employees that use it.

How are customer service and support?

I have not been in contact with technical support.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle is easy to deploy.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented Oracle by ourselves. Our IT division handles both implementation and maintenance. Our division has about 200 engineers.

What other advice do I have?

We have decided to use SAP ERP Enterprise and we plan to integrate it with Oracle. My advice for anybody who is considering Oracle Database is that as a tool, it's very easy to implement and you can customize it based on your processes or your job.

In summary, this is a good product and it's user-friendly, but I like SAP better.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Stable relational database management system with good partitioning and analytic functions
Pros and Cons
  • "Stable solution with analytic and partitioning functions that work well."
  • "Technical support and how they treat their customers need to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I'm working as a BI consultant, so the usual use cases for this solution are creating data integration and building a data mart.

What is most valuable?

The features I found most valuable on Oracle Database are the standard features: partitioning and analytic functions.

What needs improvement?

Oracle's technical support needs improvement.

Oracle should really continue working on their cloud topics. Everything they're currently doing on the cloud is on the right path, but they need to continue working on it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Oracle Database for 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

As an on-premise solution, scalability depends on the hardware, but I find Oracle Database scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I contacted Oracle technical support in the past about a bigger issue and it was a hassle. On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five being the best, I'll give technical support a score of three.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm using all kinds of products, and it's not that I'm switching from one product to another. The product I'm using will depend on the client. We choose products that would be the best fit for the architecture. Architecture and pricing are the main points for choosing which product to use for each client.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle Database is more complex than any other database that I have installed so far. On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst and five being the best, I'm rating the initial setup for this solution a three.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented Oracle Database in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing for Oracle Database is on the high-end side. In addition to the standard licensing and fixed fees for this solution, there's a cost for implementation and additional services.

Their licensing policy also needs improvement.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated Microsoft SQL Server.

What other advice do I have?

I have experience with MicroStrategy and also with SQL server reporting tools. The last time I worked with MicroStrategy was two years ago. With Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, I didn't work with it for a long time. I'm not currently working with it.

I'm not much into development nowadays. The only tool I'm currently working with directly is any kind of database, or with Power BI, e.g. Oracle Database, SQL Server, Access, etc.

In our organization, we don't use Oracle Database. In my own company, we don't use this solution, because it's being used on the client side. I'm working as a consultant, so I'm using it and most of the other tools, always on behalf of my clients.

Deployment for this solution took an hour, and what I did was a fresh install, not an update. I just set up a new Oracle database to try out new things, and not for setting it up on the client site. I implemented it myself and didn't need a third party or a technical team to help with the deployment.

I have no idea on the licensing costs of Oracle Database because it's the clients who pay for the licenses.

If I would install a new database, I would not go for Oracle. If Oracle Database is currently installed in the company, then it's okay to use it, otherwise, I won't recommend it as a new installation. My reason for not recommending it to others is because of their bad license policy and how they've treated their customers badly, in the past.

I'm giving Oracle Database a score of eight out of ten.

Good security and reliability, but needs better pricing and support
Pros and Cons
  • "Its security and reliability are most valuable."
  • "They should reduce its price and provide faster support."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for various applications. We have multiple versions, including version 19.

What is most valuable?

Its security and reliability are most valuable.

What needs improvement?

They should reduce its price and provide faster support.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. We have more than 1,000 users, and we don't have any plans to increase its usage.

How are customer service and support?

They should provide a faster response.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have different solutions for different needs.

How was the initial setup?

It was easy to install. It took less than an hour.

What about the implementation team?

We can install it ourselves. We generally have two or three admins, but it also depends on the size.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its licensing is yearly. It is expensive, and it should be cheaper.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others. I would rate it a seven out of 10.

Stable, scalable, database; the heart of the environment
Pros and Cons
  • "It's a very stable solution, especially with the hot backup."
  • "Needs educational content that would help the individual to be able to work in a real life situation and scenarios."

What is our primary use case?

My company is using the solution as a database warehouse. Previously, when I was a vendor, they used to work with Oracle forms. They were doing databases, and we were doing a secondary backup solution, which was backing up on the cloud.

How has it helped my organization?

It's quite an important part of the business. Most of the core banking servers are using Oracle Database. It's the heart of the environment. It's quite an important part of the business.

What is most valuable?

The database is a quite valuable feature.

What needs improvement?

One area where the product could improve would be to have more simplified documentation. There are things which are quite difficult to find. Also, some setup videos, like a video together with the documentation, for someone who is first implementing a solution. Watching someone else doing it would make the person more confident than just having all the notes and all the possibilities.

In addition, for the DBA, Oracle could have a series of videos. Then it would be easier for a company to buy the educational content, to become a DBA, with the videos already there, rather than looking for an online instructor than trying to get the classes. What is lacking with Oracle is the availability of education to be able to work with Oracle. Oracle is not difficult, but there is a lot that you need to know. Even if you work with only the documentation, they won't help you that much. Bringing educational content that would help the individual to be able to work in real-life situations and scenarios.

It would be better to have a compilation of videos as a pack to sell to the vendors with all the information to become DBA or to become someone who can implement an Oracle system.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a very stable solution, especially with the hot backup, archive logs, and everything.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, the solution is pretty easy to scale up and to add things and modifications. It is pretty clear.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good. I've learned more with support, actually, than from the documentations.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment is kind of straightforward, but there are things that are not straightforward. For example, if you are on AIX, it's a lot to do before installing.

Doing all the work manually, I believe it takes three to four people to maintain Oracle Database.

I also have Oracle Cloud Backup. It took me one week to figure out how to implement it, but that was two years ago. Now the documentation is much better.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I believe the solution is quite expensive.

What other advice do I have?

My advice regarding this solution is that you need a lot of practice. It would be great if Oracle could provide a platform to practice implementations.

I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
