Sophos UTM Reviews

We use Sophos UTM for firewall management and for some of the other modules it provides, such as email and firewall proxies.

The most valuable feature of Sophos UTM is the efficiency and mail filtering module.

Sophos UTM could improve the way the configuration has to be done. I have to do the configuration through the command line interface but if it could be done through the graphical user interface it would be much better.

I have been using Sophos UTM for approximately three years.

Sophos UTM is a highly stable solution. It has high availability.

We have approximately more than 1,000 employees in my company using the solution.

I have used Fortinet previously and I found it to be easier to deploy and maintain than Sophos UTM

The initial setup of Sophos UTM is straightforward. Additionally, the configuration is simple. When we first did the deployment it took approximately two days.

The configuration of this solution is easier than some of the competitors. In some of the other solutions, when there is synchronization between two firewalls there are times you need to break all the configurations and start from the beginning.

When we did the first installation of the solution we used a third party to assist. However, we now do the full implementation of the solution using our team.

The price of the license for Sophos UTM is approximately $5,500. The solution is less expensive than competitors.

The maintenance of the solution is easy, the documentation is very rich in content, and the report information is good. 

I rate Sophos UTM an eight out of ten.

We primarily use the solution for the firewall and VPN.

The web filtering is great.

The initial setup has been fine. 

You can increase usage if you need to.

The VPN could be better. We need a better VPN client for the customers.

We'd like better logging. 

I've used the solution for six years.

We have about 3,000 users on the product right now. We do have plans to increase usage in the future.

Technical support has been fine. We are satisfied with the level of service we get.

We also use Fortinet and pfSense.

The initial setup is very simple and straightforward. It's not overly difficult or complex to set up. 

The licensing is paid on a yearly basis. You just need to pay the standard licensing fee. There are no extra costs. 

I'd rate the solution a seven out of ten. It's been okay.

We are a partner of the product.

We mostly use UTM for the protection of our network and the web. Some of our customers use it for email protection. We work mainly with governmental organizations. Our company was initially a distributor of the forerunner to UTM, a company called Astaro. We provide UTM to our customers and we are now partners with Sophos. 

It's an easy solution to learn because the graphics are very intuitive. I really like the log because of the amount of information it provides.

Sophos' new generation firewall is missing the link that provides antivirus for each computer. It would be helpful if they could add that element. The technical support used to be excellent but recently they don't seem to be able to solve our problems. 

I've been using this solution for 20 years. 

The solution is stable. 

The solution is scalable although we generally work with smaller organizations. 

The technical support used to be excellent but it's no longer as good as it was and we've had some problems getting solutions to the issues that we're having.

Positive

The initial setup is straightforward. We provide one or two engineers for implementation as well as ongoing support following deployment. 

Licensing can be purchased for one, two, or three years but I'm unaware of the cost. The solution can be downloaded for free if it's for home use which is a good way of testing before implementation.

I recommend testing this product before purchase. It's a good solution and I rate it 10 out of 10. 

We use Sophos to protect the entire network, including the web servers and everything else. 

Sophos UTM has a good user interface and granular security controls.

Sophos UTM could be simplified, and they can improve on the many other features, like SD-WAN and load balancing. Sophos UTM is missing a few features that their competitors have. For example, if you have multiple branches you would like to connect, the load balancing features aren't available on multilink. If we create a VPM for multiple LAN links, we cannot load balance the traffic.

I've been using Sophos UTM for five years.

Sophos UTM is stable.

Sophos support is good. 

Sophos UTM is easy to set up, and I did it myself.

The price of Sophos UTM is reasonable. 

I rate Sophos UTM eight out of 10.

Most of our clients use Sophos UTM as a perimeter firewall for branch offices. Additionally, we use the Sophos XG, RED firewall for extending the network, and the Sophos Intercept X to complement the firewalls.

The most valuable features of Sophos UTM are the ease of use, it is very user-friendly. You can understand what they implement in the new firmware, and it's easy to manage the firewalls.

When I implement a solution, I have to teach the customers how to use it and when I have used other solutions, such as Check Point, it was difficult.

Sophos UTM has good integration with wireless and endpoint solutions

In Sophos UTM there is always a problem with the routing tables. If you want to see the routing table, you have to use the UI. You can't do it via a web browser. The routing table is better in Fortinet.

I have been using Sophos UTM for approximately six years.

The stability of the Sophos UTM is very good, most of our clients do not have to reboot the firewalls. 

The technical support is good. I tell my customers that we always have the support of Sophos and it is good for us. If you create ticket support in Spanish, you have to wait sometime, because they don't have a lot of people who work in Spanish. We have to do it in English. They should have more other language support agents.

I have previously used Sophos Cyberoam, XGS, and XG solutions. Additionally, I have used Check Point solutions.

The implementation of Sophos UTM firewalls is difficult. There are many aspects that are involved and there is maintenance needed. However, the difficulty level is the same as if you were implementing a Fortinet firewall.

We have a three-person implementation team that works in many cities here in Bolivia.

I have evaluated other solutions, such as Cisco.

I would advise others that the Sophos Academy is really good. You can receive certifications from them. It is important to understand the requirements because some people who don't know much are afraid to use firewalls, and that's a problem. It's important to use firewalls and ask questions proactively about them.

I rate Sophos UTM an eight out of ten.

We use Sophos UTM for multi-site VPN, quarantine, sandboxing, and IPF. It blocks malware and other unauthorized apps. 

I've been using Sophos UTM for more than four years.

Sophos UTM is stable and ready for customization. 

Sophos UTM is scalable. We have around 100 users, including engineers, managers, and computer scientists. We plan to increase our usage in the future. 

Sophos customer support could use some improvement. 

We were using something else, but we switched to Sophos because it's politically neutral. 

Installing Sophos UTM is straightforward. The deployment itself doesn't take long, but you have to spend some time planning and waiting for the hardware to be delivered. 

Sophos UTM should be more open-source and reduce its license cost. 

I rate Sophos UTM 10 out of 10. If you're considering Sophos UTM, I would say go for it. 

I use the solution in my home premises to protect my internal network. I am a customer of Sophos. 

Sophos has great security features and does a good job of protecting my network. The firewall feature is very, very good. 

I think the interface configuration could be improved. It's very complex for now. They need to provide more videos and have more documentation. I think that's missing at the moment. By chance, I found something on a video that wasn't in the documentation and it was a lifesaver. I upgraded my hardware from 100 megabytes to 1,000 megabytes and had many problems. I had to start from scratch and get someone to help me with it.

I've been using this solution for seven years. 

The solution is stable. 

I only use the community support.

The initial setup is very, very difficult. When I installed the new Sophos and tried to restore the backups, the restore process did not work. I tried more than 20 times, and in the end, implemented a fresh install which required a lot of work. It was too difficult. It took me a long couple of days. It's worth checking the YouTube videos, they really saved me. 

I'm using the free version. 

I rate this solution eight out of 10. 

The features that we're currently using are mainly just for the endpoint protection, which is for the service and the workstations. We basically use it for the servers, the main servers, and then from there for the client, which is basically the laptops and the PCs.

The fact that it's not heavy on the machines has really helped. It's basically lightweight. One advantage is that we, having a cloud solution, do not require a physical machine that we have to administer on our network.

The fact that it's on the cloud means we don't have to administer it on our network or deal with a physical machine, which saves us money.

The solution has many great features.

From the console, we can start different scannings on different machines. We enjoy the centralized reporting part of it. 

The initial setup is simple.

We enjoy its general stability.

The solution can scale.

So far, the solution has been problem-free.

We don't need any extra features. We only use it for the servers and the workstations. We'd like to see them offer their services on mobile devices like tablets. I'm not sure if that's an option or not.

I've been using the solution for over a year now.

It's been very stable. In fact, we haven't had any complaints or any issues with it. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. The performance is great.

The scalability is quite good.

Right now, we have 40 users.

We will definitely scale in the future. As we get new employees, we just request additional licenses.

I've never had any issues.

I also use FortiGate.

The implementation process was straightforward. What basically happens is that you just have to pick that certain client from the console and then you just install it on the machines. From there, of course, you handle connectivity after that. It's pretty straightforward.

A full deployment on one machine took less than 20 minutes. The thing is, if you have fast internet, it can even be much less.

Maintenance is very simple. Support is inbuilt from the manufacturer's side. Therefore, internally, if there are any issues on the client machine, you just reinstall it. There isn't much to do really, in terms of maintenance, except maybe the licenses. It's hosted on the cloud and updates are automatic, and are available from the portal.

We did not need a reseller or consultant's assistance. It was all handled internally.

I haven't really explored ROI. I only have worked with it for slightly over a year. Maybe we need to start looking at it. 

That said, so far, we are protected and we haven't been hit so far. We're getting the returns from it in that sense.

Having a cloud option is a real cost saving. 

In terms of licensing, we pay on yearly basis. From there, what happens, in the last month, we request a quotation for renewal, and then from there we just pay through the local reseller. 

We're thinking of maybe dealing with the supplier, the manufacturer, directly, however, right now, we're still using the local supplier for licensing and payments. 

We are on the latest version of the solution.

I would rate the solution at a nine out of ten. We are very happy with it. I would recommend it to others.

I'd advise new users that, if they are going to go with the cloud option, that issues related to maintenance is actually handled within the cloud. The rollout is pretty smooth.
