Time saved by allowing the tool to make necessary changes is definitely worth my company's money
Pros and Cons
  • "Data Interpreter: Which can identify issues or potential errors with your imported data."
  • "I really like the user-friendly (usability, user experience) layout of Tableau."
  • "The user experience for less savvy or non-technical people (from my experience)."
  • "The user experience for less savvy or non-technical people (from my experience)."

What is most valuable?

  • Data Interpreter: Which can identify issues or potential errors with your imported data.
  • Split: When you need to split columns.
  • Pivot: Good for changing date columns.
  • Metadata: This selection can clean up field names, especially after a pivot.

How has it helped my organization?

  • Data Interpreter: Can rid your data of null value fields.
  • Split: Click on the column you want to split, identify how you want to split it, and where you want to split the data.
  • Pivot: Great when you have many columns of dates. Just highlight your date columns, then right click and select Pivot. That's it. Now, your totals and region data will be based on any particular year.
  • Metadata: You can select the second icon above your previewed data source. You can select the dropdown arrow for each Field Name you would like to change and you can split the names here as well, or double click on the Pivot name and correct the name where it makes more sense for the type of data you are using. You can create alias names as well.

What needs improvement?

Tableau is always good at improving, but I typically get so busy with utilizing what is there, I have not had any needs yet for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

More recently in the past few months.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No deployment issues.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

I have not had to use customer service for Tableau. I just go online and google my needs typically.

Technical Support:

I have not had to use technical support for Tableau yet. As with customer service, I just go online and google my needs typically.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I really like the user-friendly (usability, user experience) layout of Tableau. The visual layout for me is very appealing.

How was the initial setup?

It is really straightforward, but I can see if someone has issues with the download and setup, you may want to contact technical support.

What about the implementation team?

Implementation was in-house on my own. It was easy.

What was our ROI?

I have not measured this, but the time saved by allowing the tool to make the necessary changes instead of going back to the spreadsheet is definitely worth my time and the company's money.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Not sure about this, except that Tableau can be costly (but this can be indefinable, such as user experience vs. cheaper etc.)

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Again, this was more based on learning curve and user experience for me. I've worked with MicroStrategy and BusinessObjects (learning curve is higher for me for these, then Tableau). Big thing here is the user experience for less savvy or non-technical people (from my experience). I'm sure MSTR and BO are good tools, just not my preference.

What other advice do I have?

As I had mentioned above in regards to improvements, I believe every tool or application or databases for that matter can always use improvement. That's why we work in the field of data and/or IT, it's ever changing and improving, so we need to change and improve as well. Keep abreast of new things in the market and the improvements of the tools or apps you use on a daily basis. The last thing we want in our industry is to become complacent. Then again, we should never become complacent in any facets of our lives.

Active Online Community Provides Guidance, Decreasing Learning Curve
Pros and Cons
  • "As a BI and data visualization enthusiast and provider, I have compared Tableau against other BI and data visualization tools and it provides tremendous ease of use and a shorter learning curve when compared to the rest, providing astonishing visualizations as well."
  • "Handling of large volumes of data sometimes does not work well with this all-in-one purpose tool making it less ideal for business users."

What is most valuable?

The drag and drop in development, design and usage; the Show Wizard feature.

How has it helped my organization?

As a BI and data visualization enthusiast and provider, I have compared Tableau against other BI and data visualization tools. It provides tremendous ease of use and a shorter learning curve when compared to the rest. Provides astonishing visualizations as well.

What needs improvement?

The user interface and ease of use requires a bit of a learning curve to pick up. No drag and drop functionality at the development stage, unlike its competitors.

The data preparation is quite good but not as powerful as the one I use or would recommend for data manipulation and cleansing as well. Tableau seems to focus on the data visualization end and provides, or has partnered with, some other software for data preparation.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

None at the moment.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Tableau, as noted above, does not provide much in terms of data preparation. Handling of large volumes of data sometimes does not work well with this all-in-one purpose tool making it less ideal for business users.

How are customer service and technical support?

The Tableau online community is rich and vibrant and provides quick guidance on getting started with the basic use of Tableau.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

None.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward for personal use, except when looking at deploying on local premises. Doing so entails some configuration during the installation process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Tableau pricing and licensing is on the high side for a small company, but it’s competitive among its peers. They offer a monthly subscription for their cloud service.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

As a consultant in the area of Business Intelligence and data analytics, I have personally evaluated BI tools such as QlikView, Qlik Sense, Power BI and MicroStrategy.

What other advice do I have?

Invest in the memory and RAM of the PC or server you intend to use with Tableau. Though most database sources are available for connection, you should still ensure you have all the necessary resources and connectors installed for proprietary databases.

Provides Dynamic Adjustments Of Measures And Dimensions And GUI Makes It More User-Friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "Tableau is one of the most intelligent and dynamic visualization tools I have worked with."
  • "The key feature of Tableau that has room for improvement is its performance with structured and unstructured data."

What is most valuable?

Tableau is one of the most intelligent and dynamic visualization tools I have worked with. It provides dynamic adjustments of measures and dimensions. The reason this is useful is that it gives a business user multiple dimensions of data to look through. From these you can infer interesting business operation data characteristics.

How has it helped my organization?

Operational improvements have resulted from the efficient creation of ad hoc data visualizations in a timely manner.

What needs improvement?

The key feature of Tableau that has room for improvement is its performance with structured and unstructured data. I'm not sure I would suggest that Tableau go for a hardware oriented solution for this. Nevertheless, that would not be a bad approach to enhance the product and align with current marketing trends and its competitors.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were few issues with the stability of the product when there were features such as built-in data processing using TDE (Tableau Data Engine).

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not a lot here. Pretty scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

I would rate it as between very good and excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes, we used MicroStrategy in the past. One of the reasons for the switch was to have more ad hoc data visualization and a more user-friendly tool for business; one which involved less coding and more GUI work.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was not so straightforward. We had minor issues installing it across the enterprise, due to diverse technology in different business units. But none were actual showstoppers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing and licensing are generally high with Tableau. I thoroughly encourage their recent initiative of going to a “Tableau as a Service” business model, which aligns well with enterprises and also small and medium sized organizations. It even works for individuals who would like to learn Tableau and its core strengths.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did evaluate QlikView. We actually have both in place, for various reasons.

What other advice do I have?

The key point is if you would like to have faster, ad hoc and quick data visualizations, I would strongly recommend Tableau. But for enterprise-wide deployment and migration across different environments, I would say Tableau has room to improve further.

Provides Many Alternatives For Presenting And Understanding A Business
Pros and Cons

  • "Even though this solution is, in my opinion, the best BI solution in the world, they are continuously developing their product, improving with every upgrade (and even with the minor upgrades)."

  • "Tableau is very good as a starting point for a BI system and environment with relatively low cost. But it's not easy to expand to enterprise level because there is no discount pricing strategy."

What is most valuable?

Fluent expressions are beautiful. It provides many alternatives to present and understand business.

How has it helped my organization?

I have been in many project manager roles in BI system development, and I have experience with most BI tools during the last 20 years. In most cases, I had to use web development to cover areas the BI tools couldn't handle. But Tableau can solve most of my customers' requests with fluent alternatives.

What needs improvement?

All area where business insight is needed. Also, I would like to see improvement in server capacities.

For how long have I used the solution?

Two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Excellent. When I or my customers had questions, Tableau customer support addressed the issues quickly, and in the local Korean language.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with other BI solutions, but all of them had many limitations with respect to all my customers' requests. But Tableau is able to handle them.

How was the initial setup?

Very simple and easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Tableau is very good as a starting point for a BI system and environment with relatively low cost. But it's not easy to expand to enterprise level because there is no discount pricing strategy.

Some customers choose Tableau for small systems, but they choose other solutions for enterprise requirements, to reduce costs, even though they know Tableau is a better product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No.

What other advice do I have?

It's very easy and an excellent solution. Even though this solution is, in my opinion, the best BI solution in the world, they are continuously developing their product, improving with every upgrade (and even with the minor upgrades).

Provides the story behind the data giving stakeholders the necessary insights and metrics
Pros and Cons
  • "The ability to deploy is the added ability to centralise the Tableau repository for all Tableau Developers."
  • "Tableau has provided the organisation a means to allow business people to explore their data at their pace."
  • "We did have issues with Tableau 10.1 server with the brokers failing on heavy load but since moving to 10.2, then to 10.3, this issue seems to have been resolved and the environment is now quite stable."
  • "We did have issues with Tableau 10.1 server with the brokers failing on heavy load but since moving to 10.2, then to 10.3, this issue seems to have been resolved and the environment is now quite stable."

What is most valuable?

Operations Perspective:

The most valuable aspect of this product is the ease of deployment from the Tableau Desktop to the server, providing the ability to either connect live to a data source or create a cached dataset that can be published and updated separately. The deployment of a Tableau Workbook can even be packaged up and sent to someone with a Tableau Reader installed. This makes the solution very agile and scalable.

The ability to deploy is the added ability to centralise the Tableau repository for all Tableau Developers. We have initiated a central shared directory for each Tableau platform, Dev, UAT, and PROD with each containing subdirectories for each Tableau Site and Project. Being a financial institution we must provide data segregation to comply with legislation and Data Governance policies enforced by brand segregation.

Development Perspective:

Ease of use is the most common call out from the developers. There is a thriving user group online that provides any number of ways to build reports quickly and easily, but the most important ability is to allow the Developer to storyboard the information in a dashboard. Tableau provides the developer a means to provide captions and business information on the dashboard to tell the story of each Workbook. This ability to break down a complex Workbook into an easy to digest narrative provides the business stakeholder a way to really understand and discover the story behind the data giving them the necessary insights and metrics.

How has it helped my organization?

Tableau has provided the organisation a means to allow business people to explore their data at their pace. They can either review the reports online, or on their Tableau Reader or they can download it into other formats for use in data analysis. The key insights and graphic representations through the dashboards has also provided them a quick and painless overview of their current status, whatever that may be.

What needs improvement?

At this stage, we haven’t had any suggestions since moving to Tableau 10.3, so there may be improvements requested further down the line.

For how long have I used the solution?

Six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We did have issues with Tableau 10.1 server with the brokers failing on heavy load but since moving to 10.2, then to 10.3, this issue seems to have been resolved and the environment is now quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is no longer an issue in Tableau 10.3.

How are customer service and technical support?

A nine out of 10. With all first line support, sometimes these support people need to read the question a couple of times before responding, but this is typical of any first line support for any vendor.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are still using another solution. However, this will be shutdown next year due to the decline in development on this platform. The development cycle on this legacy platform has been too slow for any type of turnkey solution and the end result did not provide a proficient self-service capability that satisfied the customer. Performance has been another factor in this platforms decline.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Tableau had been developed with a DevOps lens. I wanted to build a platform that had rigor and a platform with a level of governance of aspects which could guarantee report certification and certainty for the business stakeholder. These processes were carefully thought out even before the product was installed.

Once the process was developed and tested, we rolled out the solution to the business with a migration form for developers to fill out as we needed to meet audit policy guidelines and brand segment legal requirements. We allocated several business people to be software advocates whom were familiar with the migration requirements and liaised with the business to guide them in their approach to using the Tableau solution.

After six years, we can confidently say that any report in production is guaranteed to be correct (within limits) and the data source has been certified for provisioning.

At the time, this did have pushback from the vendor, but we’ve seen the chaos caused in other organisations that we mitigated right at the start.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Buy 50 at a time. Project your use base every three months, and project your requirements forward, so you can meet demand for licenses by having them available.

We have also added the vendor into our internal order system for ad hoc requests that we meet the needs of those that want a license on their own terms.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Actually no. This was a spontaneous purchase by an executive and we basically ran with it.

What other advice do I have?

I’d strongly advise going to the forums, attending the Tableau conferences, and ask questions about governance, report certification, and capacity. These questions and the corresponding answers should guide you on how you would best implement your own solution. We did not want to be dictated to by Tableau to install it as a free for all. We wanted to future proof the product and provide certainty around the reports being developed and deployed to the business.

Initial setup is straightforward, because of the quality and consistency of data
Pros and Cons
  • "Visualization and user friendly."
  • "Preparation and consolidation of data. Many organizations needs prepare data, changes formats or consolidate sources. ETL jobs waste a lot time and sometimes is unproductive."

What is most valuable?

Visualization and user friendly. Visualization: How you sell your ideas or your message, for example, integrate D3.js graphs.

Traditionally bars or line graphs are useful, but they make a difference when presenting your important ideas. The vision of Business Intelligence creates a rupture between old-school (like IBM, Oracle, etc) and new guys (Tableau, TIBCO, and SAP Lumira) and new forms to work with: structured and unstructured data.

How has it helped my organization?

Interaction between information/data and final user.

What needs improvement?

Preparation and consolidation of data. Many organizations needs prepare data, changes formats or consolidate sources. ETL jobs waste a lot time and sometimes is unproductive.

For how long have I used the solution?

Two years in my company.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

An eight out of 10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Excel.

How was the initial setup?

Straightforward, because of the quality and consistency of data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's transparent; no hidden costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, IBM Cognos, BusinessObjects, SAS, TIBCO, and Qlik.

What other advice do I have?

Make your decision based on your own culture, quality of data, and champion for the project.
