Keeps our customers safe from ransomware, and coverage includes every type of data center environment
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is Commvault's coverage. It has wide coverage to back up every data center environment. The product can back up OpenStack, OpenShift, and competitive solutions don't have this feature. Commvault can handle backing up any virtual workload or enterprise application."
- "Commvault has two management dashboards. The first is the CommCell Console, which is Java-based, and the second is Command Center. We don't always find all the features we need in the Command Center and we need to go through the Java console, and sometimes features are only on the Java console."
What is our primary use case?
My company is the official distributor of Commvault in Indonesia. Our job is to implement it for our customers and I have installed it for a number of customers. They have various environments: Some are on-premises and some have a cloud environment, and some are using both as a hybrid solution, where they back up from on-premises to the cloud.
We have a Commvault instance within our company as well, and we use it for demos and to back up our environment, such as our VMware database, to the local data center. And we also back up to the cloud.
How has it helped my organization?
Commvault is very helpful to our customers and to our company because ransomware is a nightmare for any business. In some cases, our customers have been running their businesses online and they have experienced a ransomware attack. With Commvault they have been able to resolve the problem by restoring the data from Commvault.
Also, Commvault has an internal snapshot feature that we can use. That reduces the time involved by 10 times, compared to not using this feature.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is Commvault's coverage. It has wide coverage to back up every data center environment. The product can back up OpenStack, OpenShift, and competitive solutions don't have this feature. Commvault can handle backing up any virtual workload or enterprise application.
The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover data across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud locations. This is pretty important because our customers have unique architectures. Some only have an on-prem data center, and some only have things on the cloud, while in some cases our customers have both. In the latter case they have data on-premises, but they will also use the cloud for DR. Commvault makes it very simple, with its single management for backup of all environments. This is one of the things that makes it a very useful backup solution. We don't need to go with a different cloud backup solution. We can leverage one solution to back up all the environments.
Another strong feature of Commvault is that we can recover something to another platform. If we backup VMware, we can restore it to, say, Nutanix, or to AWS. This feature helps our customers to move a data center or from on-prem to the cloud. It is a very useful feature.
In addition, Commvault isn't locked in to one storage brand, like Hitachi or Pure Storage. This makes it a very good choice, allowing us to leverage any brand to be used as the backup storage.
What needs improvement?
The user interface is complicated for users, but for an engineer or backup operator, it is useful. Still, sometimes users feel that the management dashboard is complicated because they see all the features in the one dashboard. Sometimes users need a simple dashboard to manage the whole environment.
Commvault has two management dashboards. The first is the CommCell Console, which is Java-based, and the second is Command Center. We don't always find all the features we need in the Command Center and we need to go through the Java console, and sometimes features are only on the Java console. Sometimes we don't see what we need on both consoles. For example, we have to use Command Center to back up Oracle EBS, because it's not on the Java console. It would be useful if we had all the configuration features for setting things up in the Command Center, rather than having to go to the CommCell Console.
Also, sometimes, when restoring across platforms, we need more documentation from Commvault.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the Commvault solution for between three and four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The product is stable for backing up any kind of environment. But sometimes there's a problem with the deduplication. Sometimes the deduplication database is offline.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is different between software and an appliance. If we use an appliance it is simple to scale because we just add more nodes to expand the storage, the compute, or the backup performance. If we use software, we may need to do some manual setup. Adding more media agents can be complex, involving more configuration. Also, you don't have high availability with a software environment. You only get that with an appliance.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is very helpful. We just open the customer portal to open a case and the support is pretty good from Commvault.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
It is very easy for us to follow the documentation to integrate Commvault and the storage network. Setting it up is very easy because the product runs on Windows. We just follow the documentation, making it pretty easy. We don't have to use the command line to set it up. It usually takes one and a half to two hours to deploy this product.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Some of our customers say that Commvault is a very expensive solution, but Commvault has many features that the competitors don't have. It is not a good choice for a small or medium business, but it is a good choice for enterprise businesses.
We have a backup storage sizer, so we know the amount of storage needed. If the backup storage is too large, we can resize the policy and size the backup volumes and adjust the licensing scheme.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have used other products like Veritas and Rubrik. Commvault is better than the others because it has fast research and development. There are features available with Commvault that the competitors don't have. But Rubrik is very simple when it comes to management, compared to Commvault.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, Commvault has a strong solution with strong features. The problem with it is the management consoles. We need both of them to operate the product. Also, sometimes the pricing is an issue as it can be very expensive compared to other solutions.

Good support and stable, but it is overly complex to use
Pros and Cons
- "Scalability, as well as stability, are a couple of important parts of this solution."
- "This product is overly complex to operate and run."
What is our primary use case?
We are using Commvault to protect some of our workloads in the public cloud. We are using it in AWS SAM and Office 365.
What is most valuable?
Scalability, as well as stability, are a couple of important parts of this solution.
What needs improvement?
This product is overly complex to operate and run.
The price of this solution could be lower.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been working with Commvault for about 18 months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
From a stability point of view, it is very good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's extremely scalable. It's used across the coalition control team and the cloud team, so there are a couple of dozen administrators. We are running a great deal more than that in the backend systems.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is pretty good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used Spectrum Protect or Tivoli Storage Manager for quite a few years.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup looked complex so we contracted Commvault to do it.
What about the implementation team?
Commault completed the deployment but even they had issues, particularly with getting Office 365 operating correctly. Their professional services were the ones who deployed it.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
One of the issues with backup vendors is that they overprice, or overvalue their products.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We are looking at Metallic as an alternative because Commvault is a good product but it is a bit complex.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, this is a good product and very capable. That said, my advice for anybody who is considering it is to make sure that it fits your purpose. If you can make do with a simpler product then choose a simpler product.
I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

DR site setup is good and backups and restores are fast
Pros and Cons
- "The solution’s user interface for managing the on-prem environment is good."
- "Suppose I am restoring a particular file. If I want to restore the permissions only from that particular folder, that is not possible. I have to restore all the data for that particular folder. If there was an option to just restore the permissions, that would be better."
What is our primary use case?
So far we have tested the backups, add-on based backups and VM-based backups, as well as snapshot-based backups. We have done restores, file-server backups, and object-based restoring. We have done database backups as well.
DR is the most important thing. For other things it seems comparable to other backup solutions, but right now, we do not have any DR site. Using this, we are planning to set up DR.
What is most valuable?
Restores and backups seem very fast.
The site setup also seems good. We have only done one or two servers in two locations and it seems fine. This is important for DR, so that if anything happens on one side of the system, at least we have another site that we can make available for our service.
The solution’s user interface for managing the on-prem environment is good.
What needs improvement?
The Command Center is pretty good. It provides us with a view of the main features and main areas, but they might be able to do things better. For example, are there any particular issues on a backup — to get everything on one tab. At the moment, we have to go to different tabs. It would be helpful to get the main notifications in a single dashboard.
Also, in the restore field, I couldn't find a separate option to restore the permissions only. I have to restore the complete data. Suppose I am restoring a particular file. If I want to restore the permissions only from that particular folder, that is not possible. I have to restore all the data for that particular folder. If there was an option to just restore the permissions, that would be better.
For how long have I used the solution?
Right now we are testing this solution in a PoC. We have been testing it for around one month. We have done most of the test cases, but we still have some test cases to finish.
We have not done cloud-based testing yet. Perhaps after we finish the failover testing, we will start with that.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is good. Compared to Veritas it is good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution seems compatible with almost every platform, including VM Hyper-V, and most databases, including SQL, MongoDB, and Postgres.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Currently, we are using Veritas, and I have also used Veeam in the past. Veeam is a good product but I prefer Commvault for backup and DR.
The DR setup is a little better with Commvault, with the failover features that are available. Also, we have been having many issues with Veritas and their technical team has not been able to solve most of them. They have not found what the issues are and they are taking too much time.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is complex because we are going to set up a DR and cloud. There are different networks in our site as well.
The deployment didn't take much time. Within a day to two days we had configured everything. But the test cases are taking time because right now we are working from home. We are connecting our systems remotely so there are some connection issues, due to our internet connectivity.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We have checked some other products, but we are not testing them because price-wise, Commvault is better than the other solutions.
What other advice do I have?
If you need a better DR solution, this one is good. We will do failover testing: Where one site is down, the other site should automatically take over, so that everything will be available. If that works well, then this would be the main thing that I would highlight.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Enables users to store unlimited data on the cloud
Pros and Cons
- "Whoever has an Endpoint license can store unlimited data on the cloud."
- "The product does not provide an option to save a copy of data on-premises."
What is our primary use case?
Customers who can’t afford storage on their on-premise servers can easily use the product to move to the cloud.
What is most valuable?
I like the Metallic Endpoint feature. Whoever has an Endpoint license can store unlimited data on the cloud. Commvault provides unlimited restoration for free. Other products have a limit on restoration. When we cross the limit, we must pay for restoration.
What needs improvement?
The product does not provide an option to save a copy of data on-premises.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for three to five months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the tool’s stability a nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable. We have three to five customers using the tool.
How are customer service and support?
Whenever we raise a ticket, the support personnel connects with us at the exact time that they committed to. I can rate the support team a ten out of ten without a doubt.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The on-premise solution is a lengthy one to configure. We can deploy the solution in three to four clicks, though. The product is purely cloud-based.
What about the implementation team?
To deploy the tool, we must authenticate our email ID on Commvault. Then, we will get a link from which we need to generate a username and password. Once we enter that username and password, we'll get a region of the cloud where we need to configure the storage tool.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is worth the money. Depending on the customer’s feasibility, they pay for the license every year or every three years. The evaluation is given for 30 to 90 days, which has to be paid.
What other advice do I have?
A sales manager, a technical manager, a COO, one of my colleagues, and I handle Commvault in our company. Overall, I rate the tool a nine out of ten.

A stable solution for Red Hat Linux
Pros and Cons
- "Commvault is a stable solution for Red Hat Linux."
- "It takes a lot of steps to implement backups. We have to do a lot of planning to make the solution work properly. It takes some time to create every policy. It's an easy task, but there are many steps. It's not as easy as using Veeam."
What is our primary use case?
Commvault is an enterprise-level backup solution that can use multiple agents at various sites. We have many customers, including banks and hospitals.
What is most valuable?
Commvault is a stable solution for Red Hat Linux.
What needs improvement?
It takes a lot of steps to implement backups. We have to do a lot of planning to make the solution work properly. It takes some time to create every policy. It's an easy task, but there are many steps. It's not as easy as using Veeam.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used Commvault for nine months as a supporting engineer.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate Commvault eight out of 10 for stability.
How was the initial setup?
Setting up Commvault is complex and it involves many steps. After you configure the storage, you need to set your client's policies and add a proxy server if necessary.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I prefer selling Commvault to enterprises. It's appropriate for a company that has a headquarters plus four or five offices. It isn't ideal for a small business. The price is okay if you have the budget of a large enterprise. Aside from the license, the only additional cost is cloud fees if you are using cloud infrastructure.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Commvault Backup and Recovery 10 out of 10. I would recommend Commvault if a company has huge backup needs and a sufficient budget. If the price isn't an issue, you shouldn't compromise.

Has a straightforward interface with active applications and scale-out hardware
Pros and Cons
- "The Commvault Complete Data Protection interface is straightforward to use."
- "There could be improvements to the backup failures."
How has it helped my organization?
Commvault Complete Data Protection has scale-out hardware. It allows you to build hardware when running out of capacity or performance is degraded. You can scale the entire hardware by adding servers. The data can be distributed across all these nodes and is resilient across single or multiple node failures. In comparison, Dell EMC does not have a scale-up platform for the backup.
With Commvault Complete Data Protection, we have a scale of backup positions because we don't know if our backups or workloads may increase. With Commvault Complete Data Protection, we don't have to worry about running out of capacity or buying other hardware. The solution also has active applications between two sites that the Dell EMC network does not have. With Commvault Complete Data Protection, you can have a high-level backup server down on one site, all your backup catalogues can be replicated to another site, and you can bring the backup server from the second site in just a few seconds.
What is most valuable?
The Commvault Complete Data Protection interface is straightforward to use.
What needs improvement?
There could be improvements to the backup failures. The backup is critical because if we lose even one day of backup, it is not good. Backup failures typically happen because all end devices are prone to failures. But when failures occur, we have a long window to fix them. We usually don't need support to fix it, but I engage support if required. I can fix about eighty percent of the failures.
Commvault should implement documentation or knowledge-based articles to assist. Customers can then efficiently utilize them and fix the failures themselves. Calling support takes time, and we don't know if the SLA will be breached while waiting. So vendors should document the failures for visibility, and we can quickly fix them ourselves.
They can also improve the bugs. They have security measures for ransomware, but the bugs should be fixed. In addition, before getting a new product, the area managers always sell their product and treat us with respect and dignity, but when the product is onboarded and live, they do not engage with us in the same way. They only engage with us when there is a problem.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for eight months. We've moved 65 Microsoft workload backups to Commvault Metallic from Commvault Complete Data Protection. Still, Commvault Metallic is inconsistent because they are working on optimizing it and enhancing it monthly. We haven't had exposure for on-premises, but we'll get it in eight to ten months for Commvault Complete Data Protection.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We were doing a comparative study on Veritas, Commvault and Veeam, the leading enterprise backup solution providers. They have a single panel interface where you can manage both the on-premises workflows and the cloud, and you can migrate between them and vice versa to any storage. In comparison, Dell EMC networks are lacking, and they are still legacy solutions. They don't have the integration of their on-premise workloads to the cloud or send the cloud workloads to on-premises. They also can't manage them through a single interface. Based on this study, Commvault Complete Data Protection is the best.
What other advice do I have?
I rate this solution a nine out of ten. The product is really good. Commvault has wonderful security features like backup and recovery features. Other solutions have their methodology for backing up and storing data in the target disk. Commvault is very good; in most cases, they are better than Veeam. There are similarities regarding backup, recording methodology, incorporating cloud workloads and integrating cloud with on-premises but storage matters with these solutions. If you prioritize your hardware, Commvault is a good choice.
