The solution is used for normal backups, file system level backups, or database backups.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is good for the solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
In my experience, the solution has been highly scalable.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support has been good.
How was the initial setup?
The setup is complicated and complex. The length of time it will take depends on the environment and how large it is.
What about the implementation team?
It is best to use a consultant to do the deployment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is not cheap. However, for an enterprise-level solution, the price is comparable to other competitors. It would not be affordable for small to medium size organizations.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend this solution to others. I would advise others wanting to implement this solution to spend some time on the initial setup and once the initial setup is done, then it will be quite easy to use.
I rate Commvault a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Systems Administrator Team Leader at a retailer with 1,001-5,000 employees
Easy to use, good speed performance, and the technical support is strong
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable features are the ease of use, the graphical interface, and it's high speed."
- "Persistent binding is a feature that I would like to see in the next release of Commvault."
What is our primary use case?
We are using it for backing up all of these services in the full infrastructure.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features are the ease of use, the graphical interface, and it's high speed.
The GUI is easy to use.
The compression and deduplication ratios are very good.
What needs improvement?
The price could be lower.
When I compare it with Dell EMC Networker, they have a feature called persistent binding, which means that the backup would be going through the fiber channels instead of the network. Commvault relies on the compression and deduplication ratio, although they could also utilize the fiber channels. Persistent binding is a feature that I would like to see in the next release of Commvault.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Commvault for more than one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I experienced instability only one time, but it was restored.
It's very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's scalable. That's why it's HyperScale.
We have four administrators in our company who are managing the infrastructure.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is very strong.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
When we made a paradigm shift after moving from the EMC network to Commvault, there is a difference when using both of the products. The other one is powerful but it's more complicated. This one is easier.
How was the initial setup?
It's a Commvault HyperScale model, which is easy to scale.
If you refer back to the manual system, it's straightforward and the architecture is very easy to understand. Implementation is easy.
It's based on a HyperScale with three different nodes running on a RedHat operating system.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
If we compare with other products we can recommend Veeam.
Veeam and Commvault are almost the same but Commvault made an announcement EMEA and Commvault now have a fully managed product and they have a backup as a service with unlimited storage.
We are also evaluating Barracuda.
What other advice do I have?
At the moment we are evaluating the additional features in terms of Office 365, backup, and SharePoint to analyze the differences.
Overall, this is a unified solution and it's wonderful.
I would rate Commvault a ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Head of the Company at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Provides good technical support services, but its scalability needs improvement
Pros and Cons
- "Commvault HyperScale X is also a good choice for regulations that require the backup system to be isolated from the rest of the infrastructure."
- "Commvault HyperScale X is more expensive for hybrid environments than traditional solutions."
- "Commvault HyperScale X is more expensive for hybrid environments than traditional solutions."
What is our primary use case?
We use the Commvault HyperScale X to manage complex infrastructure, so deployments are fast.
What is most valuable?
Commvault HyperScale X is also a good choice for regulations that require the backup system to be isolated from the rest of the infrastructure. If there is an issue with the software, we open a support ticket with the software vendor. We then escalate the case to the hardware support team.
What needs improvement?
Commvault HyperScale X is more expensive for hybrid environments than traditional solutions.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Commvault HyperScale X as a reseller for five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the product’s stability an eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is very good, but there is a limitation on expanding the cluster to scale to a higher level. We have smaller and enterprise-level clients. I rate its scalability a nine out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
We have a team of four to manage support. We have many paid credits for networking and application support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is moderately easy. I rate the process a seven on a scale of ten. The deployment time depends on the environment. It takes around four to eight hours to complete.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I rate the product’s pricing a seven out of ten.
What other advice do I have?
If the customer needs to protect five terabytes of data, they will need five licenses if they need to upgrade to make devices flexible or create this model. Many small customers can start with a 10TB appliance, and enterprises can scale up to 50 TB. The appliance is compatible with various hardware platforms, including LG, Lenovo, IBM, Dell, etc.
I recommend the Commvault HyperScale X for its enhanced quality, performance focus, and data isolation. I recommend looking for support for various solutions from a single vendor. Overall, I rate it a seven out of ten.

Infrastructure Solutions Architect at a computer software company with 5,001-10,000 employees
A single platform where you can enable whatever you want to use
Pros and Cons
- "Commvault software is a single platform where you can enable whatever you want to use, like endpoint protection. You can enable those licenses on a single platform screen. This is where I see the value ad. This is a single management tool."
- "They don't market their products well. They don't do a lot of marketing to enable them to move forward."
What is our primary use case?
We use it mostly for backup and sell it to our customers. We are moving more into data management. Our customers also use it for data classification, it's becoming a major role.
How has it helped my organization?
The previous version of Commvault was complex from a licensing point of view. Veeam is taking up the virtualization space.
It helps my customers recover data and to replicate the data as well.
What is most valuable?
Commvault software is a single platform where you can enable whatever you want to use, like endpoint protection. You can enable those licenses on a single platform screen. This is where I see the value ad. This is a single management tool.
With other products, you need to have different management tools.
What needs improvement?
They don't market their products well. They don't do a lot of marketing to enable them to move forward.
It's a very good product. It works. If their marketing was great, the product would sell itself. It's harder because their competitors have much better marketing. Everybody knows Veritas and Veeam because they market well. If a customer chooses Commvault, it would be the first time they've heard of it.
For how long have I used the solution?
My company has been using it for the last five years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is great. In the new license model, I can scale it on the virtual environment. We are going to increase our Commvault center in our data center. The maintenance will increase.
How are customer service and technical support?
Their technical support is very good. I am very satisfied. I work with somebody who is connected to the development side as well so they make sure to implement changes if we encounter issues.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Commvault is an enterprise product set and Veeam only started the virtualization layer. Commvault is already at the front. Veritas has a lot of appliances and Commvault only started doing appliances a few years ago. Veritas marketed their appliances aggressively but Commvault didn't. I think Commvault is moving into data management.
How was the initial setup?
It's not that easy to implement. It takes some time to implement and make it work. It was complex to implement and understand how to get everything correctly.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Commvault changed their model to make it easier for partners and customers to understand. Before there were 16 licenses for one area but now they've made it easier to work.
What other advice do I have?
Understand the way it works in terms of sizing and configuration. As soon as that is correctly done, it's not so difficult to understand.

Commvault & EMC Networker, Avamar Backup Administrator at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Provides helpful documentation and has good scalability
Pros and Cons
- "Commvault provides the status of a backup or restore operation."
- "The product's migration process and stability need improvement."
What is our primary use case?
We use Commvault Complete Data Protection backup and recovery.
What is most valuable?
Commvault is easy for auto-upload, auto-download, and push install and update capability. Also, It saves a lot of time by allowing us to restart the agent. We can do it all from a single console. The documentation on the portal is also beneficial. As we type in a search, hundreds of documents pop up without having a Google search.
Commvault provides the status of a backup or restore operation. It is a great way to troubleshoot problems and ensure that data is always protected. What needs improvement?
The product's migration process and stability need improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Commvault Complete Data Protection for a year since June last year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The product's stability could be better.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Commvault Complete Data Protection is scalable. We are using a socket-based license.
How are customer service and support?
We communicate with our support partner regarding product-related issues.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Compared to Dell, the push installations are much easier with Commvault. I used to have to log on to every server to install and deploy new clients, but with Commvault, I can do it all remotely. It saves me a lot of time and hassle.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is easy. The implementation took a few weeks for the distribution center. The agent installation is easy for clients and takes about 15 minutes. It requires one engineer and one architect to execute the process.
It is an easy-to-maintain product. From a backup failure perspective, backups are almost always almost successful. We have an issue with one of our distribution centers. For example, we have a command center and a Java console. When we perform a task on one of these consoles, it does not always reflect on the command center. It should be synchronized at all times. Our engineer has logged a ticket with this concern. It could be because we are using an older software version, but that shouldn't be the case. If I switch from plan A to plan B on one console, it should reflect on both consoles.
Commvault only needs one person who travels to different sites to provide support services. Each site has 14-15 services. So, the web push screen is assigned to one person per site.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The tool is cost-effective.
What other advice do I have?
The tool has the most difficult migration process compared to other products. The migration from our previous network to Commvault was a challenge.
Once the tool is set up, it works well. For example, recovering data from Oracle is much easier with Commvault. I don't have to manually search through every backup file to find the file I need. I can search for the file name or other information, and Commvault will find it. I rate it an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

CTO at Greenware Technologies LLC
Expandable, steady, and reliable
Pros and Cons
- "It's great for getting data back."
- "The product is a bit complex."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for ransomware protection.
What is most valuable?
It is a very stable product. It's reliable.
The product is scalable.
It's great for getting data back.
What needs improvement?
The product is a bit complex.
The price should be reduced more. We'd like to see improvement in the appliances, the OEMs. They have to increase the number of OEMs.
Normally it's available with HP or Lenovo, yet very limited. We are expecting with open-source, with Supermicro, that those kinds of appliances will support as necessary.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for four years, since 2018.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable and reliable. The performance is good. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We can scale the solution as we need to. The hardware supports any kind of storage.
Everyone is using Commvault. It takes a backup of their endpoint devices, and mostly it's used by the admins to restore, schedule backups, and other things.
We have maybe 700 people on the solution right now.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is okay. We are mostly satisfied with the level of support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
I cannot say that the solution is straightforward. It's a little complex.
Normally, if it is the on-prem edition of Commvault, you need the expertise to handle the implementation. When it is the cloud, Commvault Metallic, it's very easy.
What about the implementation team?
We handle implementations for clients.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I'm purely technical. I don't deal with the licensing aspect of the product.
I'd rate the product four out of five in terms of affordability. From what I understand, it's not overly expensive.
What other advice do I have?
We are a partner of Commvault. We are an implementation partner.
If a user decides to implement Comvault on-prem, they should select a partner who can support them better with the coordination of Commvault.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. I like the scalability, steadiness, and reliability of the product. We can rely on Commvault for the data. 100%, you will get your data back. That's why we use it.

In the field of backup applications, there are various solutions. But certainly, Commvault should be ranked at the top of this list. Everything was created “in the house”, they listened to the needs of the clients. What I would emphasize is it is easy to use for users who are not backup administrators and with a single console for all activities.
