Mapping capabilities lag behind while requiring significant customization but is scalable
I worked with ARIS Cloud under SAP. The solution was deployed by an agile team and utilized daily by process engineers and business process owners. It was involved in the financial services industry, with thousands of users within the company The platform's capabilities are highly dependent on…

Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"In terms of using the cloud version, if you're somebody who, like myself, has got a lot of experience and understands measures and notations and things, basically it's unrestricted. You can do so many things. You can do your Archimaze, you can do BPMN. There's lots of stuff you can do in there and if you're a good field person and you cause yourself re-using things or whatever, then it's very nice, it's very easy to use."
"This solution has improved the way our organization does training."
"ARIS has proved that it works also in complex circumstances."
"With ARIS Cloud, we identified our goals, business processes and we turned them into a digital strategy."
"In terms of UX design, somebody who has not had experience with ARIS will be able to use it very easily."
"The cloud version has the advantage that you can work on it from anywhere."
"Aris Connect opens collaboration opportunities between team members within the organization where they can actually submit change requests, navigate processes, and offer comments."
"ARIS Cloud offers easy query writing for retrieving information and includes a user-friendly Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) part that aids risk managers effectively."
"Camunda is a scalable product."
"We chose to use Camunda because it's open-source, easy to develop, and scalable, plus we were able to develop some of the enterprise features offered with the license in-house only."
"Camunda serves as an automation library and provides lightweight deployment to the cloud."
"It allows me to present or to demonstrate the business process flow, visually, without having to resort to PowerPoint, Visio, or other products."
"Camunda Platform is better than IBM BPM, and Azure; it is more elaborate, divided across the platform with integration separated from the UI and internal work, and it also integrates well."
"Its flexibility stands out as the most valuable feature."
"The solution is easily compatible with HTML forms and HTML language programming and that is the most significant part."
"When I compare it to other BPM tools, like IBM, it is great, open source, and free when you use the community version."

Cons

"If you have multiple tiers of approvals into that update of the policy, or the process design itself, it takes ages to prepare those internal flows within the system."
"The stability was poor due to frequent outages."
"I would like to see more support for architectural diagrams."
"It would be very helpful if this solution were more open and could integrate with other solutions like ServiceNow."
"Initial setup is rather complex. You have to find a way to isolate the complexity, and find common ground."
"The price is quite high. This is one weak point of the solution."
"Initial setup is rather complex. You have to find a way to isolate the complexity, and find common ground at a level where they don't need the details."
"On an enterprise level, the ability to onboard somebody quickly is cumbersome because it just has too many things in it. It's got something like a hundred or more techniques and things in it."
"In the future, I would definitely like to see the process administration (migration, audit, tracking) and process evaluation (optimize) features added to the community edition."
"Initially, installation was challenging, but recent improvements have made it much easier."
"When you have a lot of processes running, it becomes very expensive very quickly."
"I have faced problems in bringing up the Cockpit in terms of GUI processes."
"The only drawback is the time that it takes to have a complete set of workflows implemented on the Camunda platform."
"There are a few things that I'm missing. For instance, the user interface creator, which I know other systems have, like Aurea or Lombardi, which are IBM solutions."
"I think that Camunda can try to do better when it comes to solving the complexities of all the products in its software stack."
"While it's very scalable, it would be great if auto-scaling capabilities were added to it. Right now, you have to do capacity planning."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing model of ARIS Cloud is leaner and more beneficial to the customer. The new license model is great. With the on-premise, you needed to subscribe to many more types of licenses. Now there are licensed bundles available on the cloud."
"The cloud deployment is not more expensive. In the cloud, you pay for what you use, and there's no need for maintaining infrastructure or additional personnel, making it cost-effective. On-premises deployment, on the other hand, involves infrastructure costs and maintenance expenses."
"There is a student version of this solution that can be used for free."
"We are using the open-source version of this solution."
"The evaluation of my customers on pricing is that it is reasonable."
"In Africa, the cost of deployment is an important factor to consider since it adds to the overall cost. This might be the only drawback to using it."
"It is good for a startup. When we started, its price was fair, but the way we are using it to orchestrate microservices makes it expensive. When you are growing as a company, you would have more microservices, and you would have more users. There is an exponential effect when you are growing in terms of the number of conditions, processes, and users because they bill you per process. So, the price was increasing very quickly for us, and it was very difficult."
"Camunda's pricing is good."
"Its price is decent. Everything is included in the license. The Community version is also good to start with. We are using the Community version."
"We use a community version."
"We are using the paid edition because there is no separate support and service license yet. We are yet to find a suitable licensing model for Camunda because we only use the engine, and we have implemented our solution around Camunda Cloud. So, we are mainly interested in the support and service, and that's what we mainly use in the paid edition."
