Great for visibility but lacks many features and difficult to update
We're customers. We don't have a special relationship with the company. I am the operation's application administrator. At the moment, the solution is monitoring the applications that we want it to monitor. We're not looking at it on a daily basis. We just use it here and there. The challenge we have is that we believe that Dynatrace can address some tasks we'd like done that are not possible to execute on this solution. Dynatrace includes monitoring of not just the logs, but the applications as well. Dynatrace also makes us include firewalls, etc. We could have it so there are end to end solutions or identifications within the process. What we have right now is only the app server as well as the database server and its connectivity. The solution does save time that's caused when creating SQL coding. However, there are some issues around AppInternals changing the code and giving us issues. From the point of view of the top management, we want a more permanent solution. We want to identify what causes issues and we are looking for a more end-to-end solution. That is why we are looking at Dynatrace. I don't know if I have any advice for other organizations. The experience I have is only based on my own limited experience. However, I believe that the application has the potential to be really good if it identifies what is really important to an organization. It's still sort of half-baked without AppResponse. Without the other key features in infrastructure, like the network, firewalls, and proxies, it's lacking. It's not fully complete. I'd rate the solution six out of ten. It addresses some of our needs, but there's a lot lacking that could be added to make it a fuller, more interesting product.

I would recommend Broadcom DX Application Performance Management if a customer doesn't have any existing performance solution. However, ten years ago, the solution was better, and now there are many competitive options. My overall rating would be between six and seven. The product rating I would give is 6.5 out of 10.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"My advice to others would be to use this solution for monitoring."
"We just control on the backend of AppInternals what we want to instrument and what we don't want to instrument."
"Synthetic transactions, WMI and SNMP query capability."
"The most valuable aspect of this solution is the integration with their other systems. It's easy to understand and it points out the relevant problems in the enterprise."
"Clicks to root cause - fast & easy to diagnose and deep-dive"
"Transaction Tracing is the most useful. Being able to have the transaction stitched together so we can see where the problem is has proven invaluable."
"From the experience I had with these three tools, I realized that Riverbed was superior in all aspects (performance, user experience, and features)."
"As an Administrator, before we bought this AppInternals, I didn't have visibility on why items were slow or why an application was not running. This gives us the ability to see what's going on. The application is load balancing. We can now see if its own server has issues or just one specific server has issues."
"The most valuable feature is the flexibility and how you can get any data pretty much anywhere."
"The ability to deep dive into the root cause of any given issue has always been the most valuable feature."
"The time it takes to track problems in applications is the most valuable return that we have from this solution."
"Technical support has been pretty good."
"What's most valuable about this solution is that it completely monitors code-level visibility."
"We don’t have performance bottlenecks or leaks in production any more and act proactively to prevent their occurrence."
"It helps you get to the root cause much faster when you have issues."
"Proactive alerting is one of the key elements of APM and works really well, as the ability to detect problems before they become widespread high severity incidents is critical when you are managing production systems."

Cons

"We had issues with the end-to-end view of unique customer: reviewing end-to-end customer problems to see where a problem is about customer, code, DB or network."
"The technical support is not very good and should be improved."
"They should find a way for report generation from TTW to run quicker."
"There are some functional bugs when using TTW and making report queries (to generate graphs)."
"We have put in a request as an enhancement that we would like to search for items. If we're searching for a URL and we want to know was it a get or was it a post."
"It's not as good as it was three years ago before meddling by an activist investor, privatization, and subsequent layoffs hurt support."
"Deployment and agent patch management is not managed centrally, resulting in a large level of effort to update."
"We'd like to be able to find out performance problems on application class and methods."
"We did have stability problems."
"The integration with CA Spectrum is quite difficult to create, and it is also only one way, only being used to view alarms coming from CA APM."
"In the past when we've called them it's been really hit or miss. Like on a scale of one to 10, I'd give it a six."
"CEM needs to be simplified, because it causes too many interruptions in our daily work."
"When we made the upgrade to 10.3 we have some problems with the new version."
"Had some performance problems with a few applications and had to disable some probes."
"I would like the ability to see a full end-to-end path of a transaction."
"The pricing and licensing costs are too high."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing model is expensive compared to its competitors, but the service it gives to your business, and the data quality, means that it's worth it."
"The licensing model for v9 is better where it is an individual license per server, while v10 licenses are per JVM/ .NET and server instance. The latter model appears to be the model that other APM vendors are using."
"Pricing and licensing are not issues."
"All discounts are case by case to accommodate the client's budgets."
"Dynatrace is the most expensive of these tools followed by AppDynamics which is "medium-expensive." CA APM is a bit lower in price than either Dynatrace or AppDynanics... In my opinion, if you can afford it, go for AppDynamics instead of CA APM."
"Althougth it is a bit expensive, it is really worth it"
"Broadcom is a better and cheaper option from the financial perspective. It also depends on the DLP plug."
"It is definitely expensive for what we get, but there isn't an alternate option at the moment."
"The licensing costs are expensive."
"The license for Broadcom DX Application Performance Management is annual. The licensing model could improve because there is not any limit to deploying the agent, there should be some limits on it."
