Great for visibility but lacks many features and difficult to update
We're customers. We don't have a special relationship with the company. I am the operation's application administrator. At the moment, the solution is monitoring the applications that we want it to monitor. We're not looking at it on a daily basis. We just use it here and there. The challenge we have is that we believe that Dynatrace can address some tasks we'd like done that are not possible to execute on this solution. Dynatrace includes monitoring of not just the logs, but the applications as well. Dynatrace also makes us include firewalls, etc. We could have it so there are end to end solutions or identifications within the process. What we have right now is only the app server as well as the database server and its connectivity. The solution does save time that's caused when creating SQL coding. However, there are some issues around AppInternals changing the code and giving us issues. From the point of view of the top management, we want a more permanent solution. We want to identify what causes issues and we are looking for a more end-to-end solution. That is why we are looking at Dynatrace. I don't know if I have any advice for other organizations. The experience I have is only based on my own limited experience. However, I believe that the application has the potential to be really good if it identifies what is really important to an organization. It's still sort of half-baked without AppResponse. Without the other key features in infrastructure, like the network, firewalls, and proxies, it's lacking. It's not fully complete. I'd rate the solution six out of ten. It addresses some of our needs, but there's a lot lacking that could be added to make it a fuller, more interesting product.

Dashboards facilitate prompt alerts but discovery feature needs enhancement
I would recommend Broadcom DX Application Performance Management if a customer doesn't have any existing performance solution. However, ten years ago, the solution was better, and now there are many competitive options. My overall rating would be between six and seven. The product rating I would give is 6.5 out of 10.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The capability of analysing each individual transaction captured to a very low level detail (method call/line of code)."
"My advice to others would be to use this solution for monitoring."
"We just control on the backend of AppInternals what we want to instrument and what we don't want to instrument."
"Synthetic transactions, WMI and SNMP query capability."
"I like it that one can match IPs with the application name."
"Browsermetrix, which is real-user monitoring via JS injection and linked back to TTW via cookie. It allows us to see the experience of every user hitting our sites and analyze performance by region, browser, etc."
"Clicks to root cause - fast & easy to diagnose and deep-dive"
"As an Administrator, before we bought this AppInternals, I didn't have visibility on why items were slow or why an application was not running. This gives us the ability to see what's going on. The application is load balancing. We can now see if its own server has issues or just one specific server has issues."
"It largely reduces turnaround time from application failure, and has reduced man hours in managing availability, performance, and scaling applications."
"The solution has very good capacity and performance analytics, with an excellent dashboard that allows me to get quite granular and provides a lot of insights into how my system is performing and what kind of load is on the systems."
"It's a very stable product."
"We are using APM for troubleshooting and because of this product, the delay to solve and to fix issues has been reduced by 40% on average."
"The APM tool allows us to monitor performance of that application, where are the pain points, where are the slowdowns, to focus on where we can fix those."
"For a person with a little bit of technical knowledge it is the best tool on the market to enhance application performance."
"At the end of the day, you should be selecting an APM tool that best suits your organisations requirements when it comes to Performance and Availability Management."
"We are able to see errors in the code that users would experience and then give that information to our developers to troubleshoot."

Cons

"It's not as good as it was three years ago before meddling by an activist investor, privatization, and subsequent layoffs hurt support."
"Support for PHP, DB and other applications need to be supported."
"They should find a way for report generation from TTW to run quicker."
"There are some functional bugs when using TTW and making report queries (to generate graphs)."
"I would like for it to have automated updates, the way the product updates itself should be all automated, as opposed to what it is now."
"The technical support is not very good and should be improved."
"It wasn't a critical issue, but it was hot enough to where it would have been nice to get some guidance from Riverbed, but they went ahead and let us down, but that was only one occasion."
"We have put in a request as an enhancement that we would like to search for items. If we're searching for a URL and we want to know was it a get or was it a post."
"It's not as agile in keeping up with the direction that CA is pushing it."
"I'd like some simpler dashboards; some easier reporting."
"I would like them provide more guidance on specific tuning of monitoring options to avoid unacceptable overhead."
"The APM SQL feature doesn't perform like we would like it to. I know that's a new feature with 10.5, so it may be one of those things that gets a little better, but it should run faster."
"Sometimes when we raise issues and open tickets with them, they'll say that the issue will be resolved in the next release; we have to wait for the next release before they are able to solve the issues, instead of solving them more quickly."
"User interface - CA is moving towards HTML5, but still a lot is Java, old fashioned, non-customizable and not user friendly. It’s look and feel is still too technical."
"The reason it's not a ten is because they don't focus enough on improving over time like other competitors do who have a more modern and complete tool."
"The way the product itself is it allows you to identify a problem area but not exactly tell what the problem is."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing model is expensive compared to its competitors, but the service it gives to your business, and the data quality, means that it's worth it."
"The licensing model for v9 is better where it is an individual license per server, while v10 licenses are per JVM/ .NET and server instance. The latter model appears to be the model that other APM vendors are using."
"The pricing structure should be based on memory or CPU usage rather than the number of agents, as it makes the solution more expensive for us."
"Pricing and licensing are not issues."
"Negotiate a lot, but do not forget to buy the product because it is worth it."
"Althougth it is a bit expensive, it is really worth it"
"Dynatrace is the most expensive of these tools followed by AppDynamics which is "medium-expensive." CA APM is a bit lower in price than either Dynatrace or AppDynanics... In my opinion, if you can afford it, go for AppDynamics instead of CA APM."
"It is definitely expensive for what we get, but there isn't an alternate option at the moment."
"Broadcom is a better and cheaper option from the financial perspective. It also depends on the DLP plug."
"The licensing costs are expensive."
