Helps to save money and resources with the data compression feature
One point I'd like to improve is that the tool should start selling small boxes again. It discontinued some products and is focusing on bigger, more capable boxes, neglecting the SMB market. Even though it's not a big market, it shouldn't have removed them. One way to improve the product is to add an operational assistant that doesn't depend on VMware. It could also establish more alliances with other operational systems.

Delivers essential support and performance for intensive operations in real-time environments
Our infrastructure is spread across the private as well as a public cloud. Our requirement was that the IOPS latency should not be more than one millisecond. If anything goes beyond one millisecond, it's a problem for us. We wanted a system that could handle the transactions and meet our latency requirements. There are performance benefits for sure. The amount of deduplication and compression offered by Dell PowerMax is quite good, especially with databases. Dell PowerMax delivers optimum performance and reliable support, integral for handling failures and ensuring operational continuity. The performance capacity optimization and support we receive from Dell are also valuable.

Achieves high performance and availability with a reliable and flexible storage solution
The most valuable features of Hitachi VSP series include its high performance and availability. These are key selling points for any Hitachi product. No other storage system provides a hundred percent availability, but Hitachi offers this twenty-four by seven without needing downtime. These products are highly scalable with flexible memory and controller updates.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Overall stability is very good. It is a very stable solution."
"Pure Storage has signature security technology, which cannot be deleted, even if you are an administrator."
"Everything, especially the VMs inside, is pretty fast."
"Pure FlashArray X NVMe will quickly overcome all the hurdles you face, including network and latency issues."
"The system allows for seamless learning experiences, facilitating quick and easy cloning of environments within minutes."
"The most valuable features of this solution are its ease of use and performance."
"It has good, reliable, fast storage."
"The latency is good."
"Dell PowerMax NVMe has been a significant enhancement for data handling in my industry. Its improved security features and data calculation capabilities make it a valuable solution for our customers. The most critical feature of Dell PowerMax NVMe for performance enhancement is its strong network support and integration with other vendors, along with its efficient use of hardware components like CPU and memory. Data reduction technologies in PowerMax have been highly beneficial for our company, allowing us to optimize storage and reduce costs by consolidating files"
"The response time, compared to XtremIO, is far better."
"The most valuable feature is the performance and compression. The most useful tool is CloudIQ."
"We like the compression, dedupe, and I/O on the PowerMax. They are better than on the XtremIO."
"It allows us to protect our data using different data centers and replicate bi-directionally between our two main data centers."
"The stability is amazing. Zero downtime reported over the last years."
"A huge benefit of the PowerMax has been the decreasing of our physical footprint. We recently did a consolidation where we went from 58 tiles down to 5. If we had used just the PowerMax, we could have gone from 58 tiles down to 2 tiles, which is huge space savings. If you have 56 newly available floor tiles on a raised floor data center, which you previously had to cool and provide power to, then now, not only are my costs going down, I now have more revenue opportunities because I have more space to put new customers."
"The most valuable feature of Dell PowerMax NVMe is its replication feature."
"The most valuable features of Hitachi VSP series include its high performance and availability."
"The product is generally quite stable."
"Its user-friendly configuration and maintenance processes contribute to its reputation for being straightforward and easily manageable."
"I rate Hitachi VSP series nine out of ten for a transactional workload requiring no compromise on availability and performance."
"We are using the Hitachi VSP E Series for high IOPS."
"It offers good file sharing."

Cons

"It's more multi-tenant functionality in their Pure1 manage portal that is lacking."
"It is on the expensive side."
"There is room for improvement in the pricing of the product."
"You cannot tag a LUN with a description, and that should be improved. What I like on the Unity side is that when I expand LUNs or do things, there is an information field on the LUN. This is the Information field that you can tag on your LUNs to let yourself know, "Hey, I've added this much space on this date". Pure lacks that ability. So, you don't have a mechanism that's friendly for tracking your data expansions on the LUN and for adding any additional information. That's a downside for me."
"I want to see Pure Storage not only be for fast storage, but I want to see it be for the entire data center."
"I'd like to see the product implement active replication for vehicles such as VMware."
"The tool's portfolio is minimal. It is expensive."
"Adding some functions to the product would be beneficial."
"Dell PowerMax NVMe needs to increase storage and improve scalability."
"It's a relatively new product, but for the next release I would like to see higher bandwidth on the front-end adapters. This would allow even greater scalability for critical workloads and consolidation for non-critical workloads. The hosts may not require that level of I/O performance today. However, it allows us to scale physical non-cloud environments without large investment."
"Some of the management features could be simplified and that's probably the main thing they need to address."
"PowerMax's software is highly stable, but we faced two hardware issues in one year. We had a failure of the storage director module, and the physical disk failed on another occasion. Dell EMC should improve its hardware quality."
"I would also like to see a real-time, graphical view of metrics. I don't know how far back in time we can look, but if we could see the performance from two months or three months back, and how it is performing now, that would be helpful."
"The REST API needs improvement. We are a very big automation company, and this would be big for us."
"Dell can improve the Service Level Agreement (SLA) compliance. Sometimes, when we need to replace a component, the SLA says four hours, but for some reason, the technician doesn't arrive until the next business day or even six to eight hours later before the case is placed. So, focusing on respecting the SLA is where Dell could improve."
"Dell PowerMax NVMe is costly compared to other solutions."
"Hitachi is quite expensive, and small to medium-sized organizations usually do not purchase it."
"The solution's support duration or end-of-support life is very short."
"Hitachi should work on unified storage platforms."
"Hitachi should work on unified storage platforms."
"There is room for improvement in simplifying the overall complexity of the environment."
"The graphical user interface is somewhat outdated, lacking some of the modern features found in other solutions."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Given its price, Pure is not the first option."
"The tool is an investment that we've budgeted for. While the prices may be higher than those of other vendors, we see it as a market leader with benefits. We don't regret purchasing it."
"With Pure Storage, we would like to continue seeing price reductions with flash storage. I don't think we're any different than anybody else when we continue to look to the industry for price reductions of both NVMe and traditional SSD storage. We would like to see these prices continue to decline and erode, even displacing large spinning disks."
"Our licensing fees are $500,000+ USD."
"We pay approximately $50,000 USD per year in licensing fees."
"The support cost per array is about $20,000 a year for 24/7 support."
"With VMware, we pay $300,000 annually."
"As far as the licensing costs, everything is included in the license."
"The price is on the market. It's not inexpensive, but it's available on the market."
"Its price is competitive, but they need to have a different price for West Africa. They can do better with the price point to allow us to scale even more. We wanted to migrate our entire storage infrastructure to PowerMax, which would require us to buy more capacity, and from the price point, it didn't attract us."
"Since Dell PowerMax NVMe is an enterprise storage, its price is premium."
"The cost is expensive. While VMAX now has good pricing, PowerMax is a little expensive."
"The cost has room for improvement."
"The pricing might be a bit high for small organizations, so it's more suitable for larger enterprises."
"The price is starting from $500,000."
"We hope that with the combination of both NVMe and SCM the next PowerMax will be much cheaper that the one which we acquired."
"The pricing is fair, with additional costs for support services."
"Hitachi VSP E Series is an expensive solution."
