Helps to save money and resources with the data compression feature
One point I'd like to improve is that the tool should start selling small boxes again. It discontinued some products and is focusing on bigger, more capable boxes, neglecting the SMB market. Even though it's not a big market, it shouldn't have removed them. One way to improve the product is to add an operational assistant that doesn't depend on VMware. It could also establish more alliances with other operational systems.

Provisioning and encryption ease improve data storage efficiency
To improve HPE Alletra Storage, it needs to have a true active-active controller; it claims to have an active-active controller from the back end, however, the second node is pretty much sitting there doing nothing. The MV 10000 series, which is the next series, is an improvement to HPE Alletra, and HPE is already doing that. In the next release, I would prefer to see better dedupe features; I know other companies do excellent dedupe, and they have protection group policies, meaning you have immutable data in case of a ransomware attack. If you're on the SAN, it should give you a way to protect that data without being erased. Other vendors have that capability built-in, ensuring that you can't erase the data, so features similar to that would be great.

Uses a proprietary technology with simple interface and has easy deployment
If you are not generating a substantial amount of data, the available storage space might suffice, making scalability less of a concern. However, if your data generation increases and you require more storage, Huawei OceanStor offers solutions to expand your storage capacity. Expanding storage resources can involve additional costs and configuration efforts. Acquiring more storage solutions and ensuring their integration with your existing setup might require a significant investment of time and resources. While this process can be complex, it allows for seamless scalability as your data storage needs grow. I rate the solution’s scalability an eight out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Overall stability is very good. It is a very stable solution."
"It's helped us because we've changed fundamentally what we talk about. We don't talk about storage and different tiers of storage anymore nor do we talk about servers. We talk now about applications and how applications impact the business and end users."
"FlashArray has some fresh efficiency features. I've never seen a storage solution with a compression rating this high before. It's at least 4-to-1 on Oracle databases. It's the best flash storage for Oracle."
"The initial setup was extremely simple and straightforward."
"The solution is scalable."
"The tool's valuable features are speed, security, data compression, and reliability. Its data compression feature is the best that we have ever seen. It helps us to save money and resources."
"We're able to get higher-density workloads on the same infrastructure, and we have a smaller physical footprint. The performance is excellent – during our test the bottlenecks are never on the X array, it just keeps picking up the pace to match what you need. The real-time visibility is a differentiator in my opinion."
"The database workloads are pretty fast because I frequently move data from here to there."
"The features of the HPE Alletra Storage benefit my organization by providing space saving through dedupe."
"3PAR took it to another level, but Alletra and GreenLake have impressed me utterly and totally and made life easier."
"The features of HPE Alletra Storage that I appreciate the most are the UI."
"It's been providing us with insanely fast storage."
"The cloud-like operational model has affected my operations such as deployment, provisioning, and day-to-day management by making it very easy to navigate and easy to get to everything I need."
"The capability to predict problems and prevent them before they occur is exceptional in HPE Alletra Storage MP."
"The disaggregated architecture of HPE Alletra Storage MP is a key feature. The pay-as-you-grow model is a very solid and attractive feature. The 100% availability is essential."
"The feature I appreciate the most about HPE Alletra Storage is how easy it is to provision storage."
"OceanStor is cheaper than Dell EMC, and its management interface is quite simple."
"The solution is easy to scale as needed."
"The solution is easy to use."
"The support is excellent."
"Huawei OceanStor offers good IOPS and is reliable and energy-efficient."
"Its technical support team is helpful."
"The solution is scalable."
"Stability: The product is designed to have always HA (High Availability) with redundant network and processors."

Cons

"Managing data isn't difficult for me. The performance is usually perfect, but we sometimes have capacity problems."
"You cannot tag a LUN with a description, and that should be improved. What I like on the Unity side is that when I expand LUNs or do things, there is an information field on the LUN. This is the Information field that you can tag on your LUNs to let yourself know, "Hey, I've added this much space on this date". Pure lacks that ability. So, you don't have a mechanism that's friendly for tracking your data expansions on the LUN and for adding any additional information. That's a downside for me."
"It is on the expensive side."
"We would like to see VNC integration or be able to use Pure Storage with VNC."
"The software layer has to improve."
"In terms of what needs improvement, the dashboard and management could be simplified."
"It's more multi-tenant functionality in their Pure1 manage portal that is lacking."
"In the next release, I would like to see real-time analytics for further insight into consumption models."
"HPE Alletra Storage could be improved by adding support for file-based or S3 storage, as we have NetApp as our NAS storage."
"The deployment was a little rocky."
"Previously, the [HPE] 3PAR [storage array] gave us the ability to build on SSC or spindles. The Alletra doesn't allow for this."
"They have a new update coming out that I'm going to be using as far as lack of snapshots. I'm going to put that into place as soon as I upgrade to the new version."
"We struggle to gain access to senior support engineers. Typically, we need to escalate via sales."
"The power supply was not the correct power supply, and it took forever for them to send me the one that I needed. It took five months to get it."
"There are so many features of HPE Alletra Storage that I probably don't even know about, and as a small shop, we probably don't take advantage of half of them."
"HPE Alletra Storage does not provide a cloud-like operational model on-premises for managing data infrastructure."
"The security could be a bit more robust."
"The duration of the built-in snapshot technology must be improved."
"The administration should be simplified because there are a large number of options that make it too complicated, and the customers can get confused."
"The deployment took a little longer."
"The upgrading process needs improvement. Deploy it and notify the customers when new versions and stuff comes out. I don't think they're doing that well."
"Integration with mainstream solution technologies could be better."
"We did experience a little latency with this solution."
"I would like to see more iterations and direct integration with other solutions."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"With VMware, we pay $300,000 annually."
"As far as the licensing costs, everything is included in the license."
"With Pure Storage, we would like to continue seeing price reductions with flash storage. I don't think we're any different than anybody else when we continue to look to the industry for price reductions of both NVMe and traditional SSD storage. We would like to see these prices continue to decline and erode, even displacing large spinning disks."
"The support cost per array is about $20,000 a year for 24/7 support."
"Pure FlashArray X NVMe’s pricing is cheaper than other products."
"The tool's pricing is cheap; I rate it a six to seven out of ten. Most of our sales are not subscription-based. We sell the hardware, and customers keep using it. They only renew the service part annually. The support can be a bit pricey, but the solution is more cost-effective than anything else out there."
"The tool is an investment that we've budgeted for. While the prices may be higher than those of other vendors, we see it as a market leader with benefits. We don't regret purchasing it."
"Pretty much everything that you need is licensed when you buy the product. Licensing to me is different than the maintenance cost, but they can bleed into one another. We buy the product, and we expect three years of support bundled into what we negotiate on our storage arrays. I would start to see maintenance costs going into the fourth year, but we're not there yet."
"It is fairly priced. It is in line with industry standard pricing and cost models."
"For us, its price is good."
"The solution is expensive and can cost around five lakhs."
"It is reasonably priced."
"Overall, it was good. It had a good price per gigabyte."
"Its price can be optimized."
"Its pricing is very competitive."
"The pricing is somewhat high, but when customers choose HPE, they often prioritize the brand value over pricing. The pricing is higher compared to other vendors."
"Payment is determined by the amount of storage capacity required, and we have paid 50,000 euros for our usage."
"The tool's pricing is competitive and affordable. It has the best possible pricing that we can get from Huawei. The prices are fixed and there are no additional costs."
"Its price is affordable."
"We pay a monthly licensing fee for this solution. The price could be less expensive."
"I am satisfied with the tool's pricing, which is in the middle. It is overpriced. I rate it an eight out of ten."
"Huawei OceanStor is a cost-effective storage solution."
"The pricing depends on the features the customer wants, such as storage, RAM, and processors, but in general, Huawei is much cheaper compared to Dell and Cisco."
"Huawei's prices are very good compared to those of its competitors."
