Complex deployment has limited adoption but has provided structured backup management
IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is very simple to deploy for us, but for more clients or competitors, the solution is hard to deploy and to integrate. For our team, deployment of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus may take a couple of days and longer if you have a complex customer solution. The deployment itself is not very lengthy, but the integration in production is more complicated. I assess the efficiency of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus's Advanced Snapshot Technology as not good because they change a lot of things. During multiple versions, we have experienced many changes in the product, and from the customer's view, it is not a good product because with each evolution, we encounter problems. We do not sell this product or advise this product. For SLA management features with IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, I utilize file level. SLA management is a good solution and a good idea, but the product does not work well, and customers do not adopt this product. I cannot assess the integration capability of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus using RESTful API. I cannot determine what benefit IBM Spectrum Protect Plus brings to the organization because we deployed this solution with one customer, and that customer changed the product after one or two years because the product is not stable and it changes with every version. The customer wanted to move away from this solution. The price of the product is good, but the solution does not adapt to the market. The market in France does not adopt IBM Spectrum Protect Plus.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

"The most valuable features are the API features because it allows you to integrate with your Microsoft SQL, your Oracle, and your IBM Db2."
"The most valuable feature of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is its ease of use. Additionally, it does backups of all of the things we need, such as OS, files, and databases."
"The solution offers a very straightforward deployment. You click, click, click and it's done. There's not much configuration to do."
"Reliability, recovery features, and stability are valuable to me."
"A full-featured data protection solution that is reliable and stable."
"The most valuable feature for me is the number of agents available to back up our data."
"Fantastic SAP backup resilience and reliability Offline and on-line consistent backup possibilities Oracle log treatments for archive log mode databases Affordable restores with preview possibilities"
"The most valuable features include Sharepoint item-level restore and integration with the vSphere hypervisor."
"We can quickly restore files that have been deleted or are missing from the system."
"Backup of SAP/Oracle -- they are more robust than the competition."
"The feature I like the most is the deduplication implementation with CAPA; it's very good."
"Data Protector's GUI is the most useful feature."
"OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers."

Cons

"Their first level of support can be improved. Often they are too junior to understand the issues we are having, and it takes too much time to get from them to the next level of support, which is what we actually need."
"There's significant room for improvement. They are not yet where I want them to be."
"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus could improve security."
"Rooms for improvement in IBM Spectrum Protect Plus are installation and configuration because those were difficult. They should try their best to improve those areas. In the next release of the product, better implementation and administration are what we're expecting."
"The backup support for IBM Power Virtualization needs to be added."
"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus's software is easy to scale. However, if it is on-premise, you might need to purchase more storage to store more backups."
"It still needs to grow and add new features. IBM Spectrum Protect Plus, I believe, requires time to become competitive due to a weakness in the other software products."
"At this time, I do not recommend using this solution and suggest that people choose another one."
"Data Protector isn't stable."
"We have so many specific technological cracks in Micro Focus, but we are not getting the features, facilities, or coordination between the global delivery centers and the R&D team that we need to express our ideas."
"Micro Focus Data Protector must improve its overall evolution record. They need to focus on hardware based instant recovery, client recovery, and cloud ability. Now there is no cloud ability."
"We would like to have a direct plugin to VMware. It could also be simplified, made more usable and manageable."
"Until last year it was very good, but in 2015 we felt a drop in service because some technical resources disappeared."
"The biggest area of improvement for Data Protector would be the proper functioning and ease of configuration of clients behind firewalls and other security mechanisms."
"Virtualization."
"Unfortunately, Data Protector is not exactly the tool for that task."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"IBM Spectrum Protect Plus is a little expensive."
"Unlike some other solutions, such as Veritas NetBackup where you have to pay for different licenses to use different features, there is a single license that allows you to use all of the features."
"The price offering from IBM is coming down because it is based on number of VM machines. So, IBM is coming to the market to show the added value of the product."
"The price is lower than that of some competing products."
"There are a few options available for purchasing the solutions. Overall, the price of the is high."
"The initial cost of the product is perpetual but the support fees are billed annually."
"I rate the price of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus a one on a scale of one to ten, where one is extremely expensive, and ten is very cheap."
"Clients prefer to buy a perpetual license, but the majority opt for a yearly subscription."
"Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
