Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

Easy to use and mange with reasonable pricing
The main feature is a specific file type. If we want some PDF files just to back up, the prefix is very easy, and we do everything in Veeam backup. It's straightforward to set up. It's stable. The solution is easy to use. You can centrally manage it. It's potentially free to use.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"One of the main things that I like about IBM is the versioning of the data - meaning that we can have multiple versions of a file or directory of a server."
"Generally, I find I have less trouble with Spectrum Protect than I have had with the other backup products."
"We do not lose data. That is why we are using this product and have a backup in place."
"It is a very reliable, consistent, unhackable product."
"Don't go with EMC. Go with IBM. Go with this product. Absolutely."
"The business value comes from the capability to overcome data losses."
"The D2D2T archive of my PACS data improved after I put Spectrum Protect 8.1.4 into production."
"We like IBM Spectrum's versioning capabilities; it lets us specify how many versions of a file we want to keep and for how long, and the archive component of the software helps us a lot."
"The stability is good, the solution offers good performance, there are no bugs or glitches, it doesn't crash or freeze, and it's reliable and we haven't had any problems with it at all so far."
"The solution works really well; it offers all the features we need."
"Mostly, the solution offers very good peace of mind; we feel safe and secure and know that we are able to recover anything we need to."
"A full-featured option for managing virtual machines with an instant recovery feature."
"Technical support is good. They're very responsive. It depends on the timezone responding, but I usually get a response within three hours of creating a ticket."
"I love Veeam because it is very easy to work with."
"I don't have any major problems with the agent connectivity with Microsoft applications or Microsoft Azure."
"It is good and easy to use for backing up physical servers; it is working fine, and it is stable and scalable."

Cons

"The product’s recovery process in terms of agent installation needs improvement"
"We need everything cloud. Strong support for cloud services. S3 connectivity, which is mandatory for us in the future along with this integration of Spectrum Copy Data Management or Spectrum Protect services together with these Spectrum Protect Plus functionalities, e.g., hardware, snapshots, and Copy Data Management. They should come together in one solution."
"We did not see any drawbacks to IBM Spectrum Protect before assisting a customer using Windows that wanted to migrate to using UNIX. IBM Spectrum Protect does not offer an option to migrate from other operating systems."
"High availability (HA) is a challenge, but we do deploy it in certain situations."
"Replication services would be nice. If these could be enhanced to be always on so multiple storage backup services could be added as a cluster pool."
"I am not really impressed with the Level 1 support, but once I get past that and go to Level 2, then we will usually get some type of resolution."
"The solution could be more user-friendly and provide better monitoring."
"A new adjustment to Azure cloud possibility to split big file spaces CIFS and NFS into smaller parts (together with storage split) in order to avoid retaking backup from scratch."
"The problems that we were experiencing using this solution led us to switch to Commvault."
"We can't use tape for primary storage on Veeam."
"On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows as either a zero or a ten."
"The only things that I can think of where Veeam can improve are in very small details."
"Updating sometimes gives us a problem by taking too long or causing other problems."
"I've found a lot of difficulties on the initial setup and especially in terms of credentials. We really need a Window OS. It doesn't like the domain admin account. it's a primary permission issue."
"An area that this solution could be improved would be with the licensing."
"Maybe in the future, they could do something better with the user interface and the performance, but so far it's a really good, efficient solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
"One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
"IBM Spectrum Protect, cost-wise, has way higher pricing than Veeam. By switching over to Veeam, my company saved over $600,000 in USD. The IBM Spectrum Protect pricing is a two on a scale of one to ten. My company paid additional fees for maintenance, apart from the standard licensing fees."
"We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
"I rate the pricing a four on a scale of one to ten, where one is not cost-effective, and ten is cost-effective."
"IBM provides an open license policy, which is more like a gentlemen's agreement."
"We pay for a terabyte license to support our backend usage."
"Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
"Our licensing fees are on a yearly basis."
"We purchased a three-year license, and I think that the prices are ok."
"The cost for its licenses is reasonable and as per industry standards."
"The licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis, and the fees are much lower than what I pay for NetBackup."
"We have a license package."
"The solution is inexpensive, more so than other products."
"For the licensing of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows, the customer can choose to pay monthly or yearly. It's up to the customer."
"Pricing is based on license packaging and duration. Longer term licenses are less per year and license packages also offer a discount."
