Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

High-speed backup and strong deduplication have supported secure long-term data protection
In my opinion, what can be improved about Veritas NetBackup Appliance includes licensing. A mixed licensing model would be more helpful, such as terabytes plus virtual machines, terabytes plus instances, or number of instances. I believe this could work and create a new competitive licensing model against other products. Additionally, embedding Enterprise Vault or some of its features in the backup software would enable better competition with Commvault, which offers backup and archiving from the same console. For the next release of Veritas NetBackup Appliance, I would like to see improvements in licensing, increased deduplication ratio, and enhanced high availability. Having high availability for Veritas NetBackup Appliance without requiring virtual storage like Cohesity would be important. Improving the overall high availability of Veritas NetBackup Appliance would be beneficial.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Data Protector is very good at automation; from the time of the backup, verification, and copy to tape, it is very good, and I don't need to touch it because it will do it by itself."
"Customer Service: It's perfect."
"A few of the most valuable features for us are backup and restore, the SQL databases, and the exchange and VM's on tape libraries and disks."
"Performs the backup properly and protects our data."
"The tool's most valuable aspect is its ease of management. It was not complex. In terms of features, I can mention a couple of things. For example, if you need to restore a VM, you can do it with multiple streams in OpenText Data Protector, which is an advantage over Commvault, from what I've noticed, having worked with multiple tools. Another thing is the Oracle backups; configuring Oracle backups is much easier in OpenText Data Protector."
"In terms of actually, reliably, backing things up, Data Protector is superior to the other products that we've used in-house."
"Ability to automatically detect and secure new data sources without requiring manual configuration intervention."
"The initial setup is very easy."
"The most valuable features of Veritas NetBackup Appliance are the ease of use and the familiar interface."
"The encryption feature is very good, the product itself and the new features are excellent, and it is pretty user-friendly compared to other software and very easy to deploy."
"The product enables me to recover the information of the appliances in the organization."
"The solution is useful for backups."
"The Oracle Agent and Oracle RAC support are valuable features; they are crucial for taking backups and cloning applications."
"The most valuable feature is that the backup and restoring process is very fast."
"The backup capabilities are very good, and we find the ability to allow for business continuity to be very helpful."
"The features that are most valuable are the ease of integration in deployment and updates."

Cons

"I'd say that our ROI is bad."
"We think troubleshooting is one of the most difficult parts in this product. It is hard to find any signs for job errors and why a job did not run successfully."
"We face challenges with its stability."
"I rate Micro Focus Data Protector six out of 10 overall. I would recommend something besides Data Protector."
"OpenText Data Protector is not user-friendly, especially for cloud backup."
"This solution is not scalable."
"The initial setup was complex in terms of IT, the business, and our technical support."
"The technical support was very slow."
"They need to make the licensing more clear. They should give all of the licensing details for the portals and be more clear. I have accidentally purchased the incorrect license because it's not clear."
"It's difficult to make a switch with the tool because the actual physical storage doesn't work with anything else."
"Improving the interface could enhance user experience."
"One area needing improvement is to facilitate Oracle database restores using the GUI on the NetBackup Appliance."

"Veritas NetBackup Appliance needs to improve its security. It needs to ensure that it is 100 percent protected against cyberattacks."
"The graphic interface is complex, especially on the management and administrative side, requiring multiple steps for configuration instead of simple clicks in the console."
"The monitoring could be a bit better."
