We primarily use the solution in order to get to know the data. Companies get to really explore and feel like the creators of their own destiny. Tableau is very different from and the other BI technologies I have used. They say that the main goal is not a dashboard; you're altering your exploration of the data.
DATA STRATEGY at a tech services company with 51-200 employees
Great interface with excellent forecasting and analytics features
Pros and Cons
- "The maps and colors and interface are all fantastic."
- "Tableau in French is translated roughly to a blank page; you can do whatever you want on it, and in that sense, Tableau is so amazing because it really helps us manipulate and understand data in interesting ways."
- "The data entered into Tableau must be clean. Otherwise, it won't work properly."
- "The data entered into Tableau must be clean. Otherwise, it won't work properly."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
Tableau in French is translated roughly to a blank page. You can do whatever you want on it. In that sense, Tableau is so amazing. It really helps us manipulate and understand data in interesting ways.
What is most valuable?
They have advanced statistics features that you can easily apply to your data. For example, I can do very quick calculations. In other software, I would have to code a bit to really work on that logic. In Tableau, it is drag and drop. You can drag and drop to calculate the annual growth year over year. It's so simple. Boom, there you have it.
They have advanced forecasting features. You can just select your dataset and select which model that you want to apply. You can use a stack, linear, exponential, or logarithmic algorithm. Tableau actually lets you drag and drop in order to see what a build is going to be like. Forecasting is rather new. It was introduced last year.
The maps and colors and interface are all fantastic.
What needs improvement?
The attention we receive from the partner manager would be an issue for us. The use case to have them is a bit niche. Not everyone wants a cookie-cutter analysis and it ends up being plain and not very specific. It's nice sometimes to do that. The expert analysts work on the solution once or twice or three times, and they get to a final dashboard. However, if you use a Tableau final dashboard, you can feel that it was not designed to just be used as a dashboard. Playing with that dashboard is not the end-game. It is not the final objective.
There are two types of users. There are those that are smart and proactive and constantly discovering new cases. Those are the ones that will benefit from Tableau. The others tend to just want to use dashboards, and they won't get as much out of the experience.
The data entered into Tableau must be clean. Otherwise, it won't work properly.
The support for vendors could be a bit better. There isn't much helpful communication happening.

For how long have I used the solution?
My company has been working with the solution for about five years. In terms of myself, I have only worked with it for two and a half years.
How are customer service and support?
We do have salespeople from Tableau that look to us and they do give information. However, I asked a month now today if they could give us a heads-up on Tableau's new features and Tableau's new pricing scheme for the new commercial people that have been entering the company. Our partner portal is not working anymore. We haven't been given much attention from the partner manager. We're not mad, don't think about that. However, it is something we need access to.
I stated that point with them. The salesperson from Tableau was sending emails to the partner manager to set up a one-hour chat with them to go over new features and in regards to the onboarding to new people. She hasn't answered. It's very volatile on their end, as they do change their personnel very often, and it's very difficult to keep track of that. They do not say, "Hey, Adrian, I am leaving the company. This person is the one that's going to be taking care of you guys. Let me schedule a meeting." That has been an issue.
What other advice do I have?
We are using the latest version of the solution at this time.
We're partners and we're currently working with Tableau.
Those considering the solution must be aware that Tableau is not an end-to-end platform. Tableau is a data analytics platform that works perfectly well, however, it has to be given an input that is clean, that is perfect. The information has to be very structured, very clean, very perfect. Once you have that, Tableau works very, very well. However, if you think that Tableau is going to solve your data problems as a whole, you are confused because you need a middle manager to help you with that.
Some people have used the Azure components to do the data clean, and preparation and finally put it into a data warehouse or a database in an imperfect fashion. After that process is done, then you can connect Tableau. Not before. That will be a mistake. A lot of companies have suffered that due to the fact that they weren't aware they needed clean data.
I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten due to the weakness on the data preparation side. It is not a weakness as they do not brand themselves to be clear the data needs to be clean, however, so no one should be shocked. I love it for the most part and find it a very interesting solution.

Useful self-service tools, user-friendly, and high quality visuals
Pros and Cons
- "I have found many of the self-service features valuable."
- "Everything is user-friendly, and the visualizations are high quality and esthetically pleasing."
- "The process of embedding the dashboards on external portals and websites could be improved."
- "The process of embedding the dashboards on external portals and websites could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution for multiple functions internally, mainly for finance, accounting, and the operations team.
What is most valuable?
I have found many of the self-service features valuable. One tool allows anyone within the business to create their own dashboards. However, their data has to be prepared properly. Everything is user-friendly, and the visualizations are high quality and esthetically pleasing. Additionally, there is a tool that enables not just the developers, but even the end business users to create jobs for them.
What needs improvement?
The process of embedding the dashboards on external portals and websites could be improved. We also experienced challenges with integration with analytics.
In an upcoming release, if the capabilities of Tableau Prep are improvised and expanded, that would be an added advantage.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We have found the solution to be stable and reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have increased the number of users when we develop more dashboards for the new departments. We did not face challenges when we increased the number of users. We have approximately 50 users using the solution in my organization.
We are planning to increase the usage of the solution. We are doing internal training to help our employees because a lot of people do not know how to use it properly. This has caused a bit of an expansion problem.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is good.
How was the initial setup?
The initial installation was straightforward. The deployment took approximately three months, this included the development of dashboards and customizations.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There is a license for this solution and we pay on an annual basis.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did evaluate other options before we choose this solution.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to those wanting to implement the solution would be, if you are looking for ETL heavy tools, this may not be the right choice. However, if you want beautiful visualizations and getting insights from data at high speed. This would be a good solution for that focus.
I rate Tableau an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

What is most valuable?
The preparation of data is very easy.
The ease of presenting findings is very helpful.
Overall, the solution is very user-friendly.
It's very easy for end-users to navigate the solution.
There are a lot of very useful features within the product.
They've recently adjusted their pricing model and we find it to be much more reasonable.
There are new AI functionalities on offer. However, I still need to fully test them and therefore haven't used them to their full potential just yet.
What needs improvement?
When I've done presentations in the past, I've had issues with uploading the cartography.
For how long have I used the solution?
The company that I am currently working with has been using the solution for about a decade - around ten years or so. They've had a lot of time to get to know it.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is pretty good. Previously, we found the pricing to be higher than the competition, however, they've adjusted it recently and it's much more competitive. We now find it to be quite reasonable.
What other advice do I have?
I'm a consultant and I work with a direct reseller.
I don't work on the tool myself, however, we propose the tool to be implemented in other departments.
I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. We've been pretty satisfied with its overall capabilities.

The best analytics platform with great visual capabilities, best stability, and rapid enhancements
Pros and Cons

It can, however, do better in terms of data management and the ETL features, which are not on the advanced analytics or machine learning side. Tableau Prep is where users would want to see more advancements. They can improve Tableau Prep, which is an analytic platform tool for data cleansing. People who work with data spend most of their time curating the data. Cleaning up the data and getting it ready for analysis is what takes the most time. If Tableau can invest more time in improving the Tableau Prep platform, it would be great. Previously, Tableau didn't have the functionality for writing to a database. What is our primary use case?
We are into the distribution of licenses, and we also have a services arm that takes care of the implementation.
Our customers use it for different use cases, such as fleet management, HR analytics, and retail analytics. They also use it for forecasting and predictive modeling. In the EMEA region, the analytics market isn't very mature. Therefore, many customers just restrict themselves to basic statistics in Tableau. At the most, they go for the predictive functionality, which is inbuilt in Tableau.
Its deployment depends on the use case. Some customers use it on the cloud, which is Tableau Online, and some of them go for Tableau Server, which is on-premises.
What is most valuable?
Our customers love the visual capabilities on top of it and the ability to explain and get the required data. There is no other product like Tableau in the business intelligence and analytics space.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Tableau for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
With respect to stability as a performance-driven metric, it is wonderful. Tableau is being used by one of the biggest gaming companies. Stability has mostly got to do with:
- Connectivity to your different data and database platforms
- The amount of data that you're dealing with
The Tableau platform can handle both of these because there is no limit per se in terms of the data size. However, a big fee is a challenge for everybody, and there is no escape from it.
Tableau has recently acquired Hyper, which speeds up the performance. Hyper is also something that Facebook uses. Therefore, when it comes to stability, it is one of the best solutions in the market. You don't need to worry about it.
If there are some glitches because a huge amount of data is coming in, there is an inbuilt performance monitoring option in Tableau where it actively monitors every user click on the platform. It will show you the results on the fly and tell you the part of your dashboarding or activity that is consuming the most memory. This way, you can optimize its performance.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable. The beauty of this product is that it is for everyone. Tableau is a good fit for small enterprises to large enterprises. It can also be used in small departments of a company. The mission of Tableau is to help people see and understand data. So, it is not only for the IT people who understand the technicality of it. It is end-user-centric, and therefore, everybody can use it. It can be used by the marketing, finance, credit, and sales departments. The developers, data scientists, statisticians, and other people can also use it. It is for everyone.
You can scale it vertically or horizontally, or you can go both ways. You can have a single node configuration and add more RAM or more memory to the same node, or you can have a multi-node configuration. Both are supported. You can add nodes depending on the number of users who want to consume the analytics.
How are customer service and technical support?
I am not completely aware of it because I mostly handle pre-sales, but I do know that you can raise a support ticket with Tableau very easily. They have 24/7 support, and the priority of your use case depends on the agreement or the contract that you have with Tableau. There is Tier 1, 2, and 3 support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have used SQL on different platforms. I have also worked on Python and R to generate plots. I can't stress enough on the fact that as compared to other solutions, Tableau is much easier, clearer, and more intuitive while using your data. You can actually see every bit of your data. They are able to achieve their mission and help people see and understand data.
How was the initial setup?
Its initial setup is very easy because Tableau has a new graphical user interface, and there is no need for you to script or code your installation process. It only takes a day to set up everything, and it does most of the configuration on its own. It is a very easy process.
In terms of maintenance, there are product upgrades that get released every quarter. It has quarterly upgrades and updates because it is enhanced so rapidly. They spend 25% of their annual revenue on R&D. They have constant interaction with its broad community, and they constantly take in user feedback. If there is a maintenance requirement or some issue with the product, most of the time, it automatically gets resolved in the next upgrade.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Tableau has core-based and user-based licensing, and it is tied to scalability. The core-based licensing is about you buying a certain number of cores, and there is no restriction on the number of users who can use Tableau. The restriction is only on the number of cores. In user-based subscription licensing, there is a restriction on the number of users. Big companies and government organizations with a lot of users typically go for core-based licensing.
User-based subscription licensing is a more common model. It has user roles such as creator, explorer, and viewer. A creator is someone who does the groundwork or development work. An explorer is someone who is into middle management but is not technically savvy, such as a category head. A viewer is like a typical decision-maker in senior management. For each role, Tableau is priced differently. The viewer role has the minimum price, and the creator role has the highest price. This pricing is available on their website. Everybody can see it.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise checking your minimum configuration. There is a specific hardware configuration that you need before installing the software, which varies based on your development, test, and production. You should also decide on whether you need Tableau Online or Tableau Server. Tableau Online supports most of Tableau Server functionalities, but there are some limitations for certain data connections and refreshes. This is something that you need to be aware of while choosing between Tableau Online and Tableau Server.
Sometimes, organizations that can spend or have a good budget just go for Tableau Online because they don't have to worry about maintenance and upgrades. You're already on the latest version, and everything is taken care of by Tableau. The trade-off is that sometimes you may not have your refreshes and connectivity in the widest section possible, which is something that you can do with Tableau Server, but it happens only in rare cases.
It is the best product at the moment. If you look at Gartner's report for BI and analytics, Tableau has been the leader for nine years in a row, which is a very big achievement. There is nothing else like it. You will see Microsoft above Tableau, but Microsoft provides a product suite, whereas Tableau is just BI and analytics. It is not an apple to apple comparison.
I would rate Tableau a nine out of ten.

I have found the solution to be stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is good, we have 100 users using the solution in my organization.
How are customer service and technical support?
I am not satisfied at all with the support response, it takes a lot of time. Some tickets will take more than 10 days to have an answer, this is not helpful. There is some documentation that is very useful on their site. This is the worst support I have experienced, the support could definitely be faster.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using Qlik Sense before this solution.
How was the initial setup?
The installation is straightforward. The time it took for the installation was approximately four hours. However, the configuration takes a lot longer but it is not a problem with this solution it is common for configurations to take a while.
What about the implementation team?
We did the deployment ourselves. We have a team of two administrators doing the maintenance for the solution and a team of four for the development of the dashboard.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There is a license required, we pay an annual license which is priced fair.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend this solution to others. We are satisfied with the solution and are going to keep using it in the future.

What is most valuable?
I believe one of the most valuable features of the solution is trend analysis.
What needs improvement?
I would like the solution to have certain features allowing the delivery of reports to the email. For example, publishing Pixel Perfect reports.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Since I have been using the solution it has been stable.
How was the initial setup?
The installation was simple and is easy to learn for the users.

Good support, informative dashboards and reporting
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable part of the solution is the general dashboard features."
- "Because Tableau is a lot simpler to implement, we've been able to train people to do their own reports, so it's much better from a self-service perspective."

- "With Tableau, when you're dealing with very large datasets, it can be slow so the performance is an area that can be improved."
What is our primary use case?
The dashboards give us metrics around the sales of our company. Most are sales reports to let us know how we're doing across different account managers, as well as how we're doing according to our forecast and plan.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable part of the solution is the general dashboard features. We schedule the dashboards to be refreshed and re-calculated, so they're not live connections but cached dashboards.
What needs improvement?
With Tableau, when you're dealing with very large datasets, it can be slow so the performance is an area that can be improved.
The security can be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using Tableau across the enterprise for approximately seven years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We don't have any complaints about stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability-wise, Tableau has met all of our needs. Across the organization as a whole, we probably have more than 1,000 users. There are probably 50 power users, who create their own dashboards and reports.
The consumers are sales executives, senior management, C-level, and HR. There are a lot of job categories that use the reports.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support has been pretty good and we haven't had any major complaints about it.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We are currently using MicroStrategy along with Tableau. We began with MicroStrategy, and all of our reports were on it. We had been using it for about 15 years. Tableau is much easier to develop in, so with MicroStrategy, you needed more of an architect to manage the metadata. Because Tableau is a lot simpler to implement, we've been able to train people to do their own reports, so it's much better from a self-service perspective.
Security-wise, Tableau is not as robust as MicroStrategy.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was pretty straightforward.
What about the implementation team?
We initially had a third-party vendor come in and help us with the setup. They led that effort, but since then, we've managed the environments ourselves.
We have an in-house team that takes care of maintenance.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Tableau is not as cost-effective as Microsoft BI.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We are thinking about switching to Microsoft Power BI from MicroStrategy and Tableau. Cost is a factor that is driving us toward the Microsoft solution.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Pros and Cons
- "Tableau is easy to use and it has great predictive features."
- "With Tableau, we can create our own reports which in turn, saves us tons of time as we don't have to wait for IT to do it."
- "It would be nice if we could export more raw data. Currently, there is a limit as to how much data you can export."
- "The price of this solution could definitely be lower. It's quite expensive."

How has it helped my organization?
With Tableau, we can create our own reports which in turn, saves us tons of time as we don't have to wait for IT to do it.
What is most valuable?
Tableau is easy to use and it has great predictive features.
What needs improvement?
It would be nice if we could export more raw data. Currently, there is a limit as to how much data you can export.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Tableau for roughly three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Tableau is very stable.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is pretty good.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is quite straightforward. It's not too complex.
What about the implementation team?
We deployed this solution on our own.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price of this solution could definitely be lower. It's quite expensive. We're on a monthly subscription — I am not sure exactly how much we pay.
What other advice do I have?
Tableau allows us to go deep inside the data — other solutions, like Excel, don't allow you to do that.
As a BI tool, I would give Tableau a rating of eight out of ten — it's one of the easiest BI tools available; however, it's not that easy to manage orders. It's really user-friendly for individual users, but it may not be suitable for large organizations.
