The solution is primarily used for analysis purposes. I use it quite a lot.
Director of Product Management at a computer software company with 11-50 employees
Scalable and offers good filtering but lacks deeper trend analysis capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "You are able to see and follow trends."
- "What is happening, with so many tools coming up in the market, is that people have to continuously get educated in order to use some of the more advanced features."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Overall, the solution is pretty good.
You can do a lot of filtering from the dashboard.
You are able to see and follow trends.
The scalability of the solution is very good.
What needs improvement?
There is a lot more that can be done with Tableau than what is actually happening within Juniper. The company is not getting the answers to the questions directly from the Tableau database, for example. Of course, Tableau can be extended to answer those questions.
What is happening, with so many tools coming up in the market, is that people have to continuously get educated in order to use some of the more advanced features. What's happening with Tableau is that, except for the dashboard view and all the filtering and that's happening from a dashboard perspective, it doesn't seem to be very good in making me understand the trend insights. For example, if I saw that the average sales price for Product A was lower than the average sales price for Product B, I'm not saying that B is inferior to A or anything. I'm just noting what I found and I cannot give more details. It doesn't go deeper into the analysis. I'd like more analysis to better understand what a trend might mean, and not just a report that a trend is happening. Right now, Tableau is not so good at providing that extra bit of insight.
What happens is Tableau data is used very often. From the quarterly business reviews, et cetera, the executives have direct access to the Tableau dashboard. More than anything else, they're able to do all this filtering. They could probably improve the user interface response times. When it comes to slicing and dicing of data viewing the results, it needs to be just easier in general as executives are using it and looking at it, and they are not very technical.
When executives look at the Tableau dashboard, they want to know why, for example, Product A bringing in less than Product B. Those kinds of key questions, which come from executives for reviewing the Tableau data need to be addressed and in a simple to understand way. I think Tableau has to work a little more in terms of the business insights aspect of it, where it communicates to the user and answers their questions. That intelligence part needs to be developed in Tableau.
Something great would be, if, for example, like in Google, if you asked a question, it could feed you back potential information. I don't want to compare everything to Google, however, it's so easy to find the answers you need in the way Google is set up. If Tableau could do something similar to showcase answers to questions, that would be ideal. It needs some sort of smart dashboard.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I've found the scalability to be quite good. If a user needs to expand it, they can do so.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I also have used Teradata previously.
The front-end of Teradata is not so well used and therefore I cannot talk about it much, however, the dashboard is pretty good. Much like Google, which uses ML and AI to help answer questions, both solutions could benefit from extracting intelligence to answer questions.
What other advice do I have?
I'm simply an end-user of the product. I don't have a business relationship with Tableau.
I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten. I'd like to talk to a Tableau product manager about the solution and describe how I would like the solution to work, especially around deeper analysis.

Subject Matter Expert, IT Operations Management, CS Professor at a educational organization with 501-1,000 employees
Good data visualization features like heat maps and story boards
Pros and Cons
- "I like Tableau's heat maps and the storyboard. You can create data stories and tons of visuals with it, and it goes together really well. Tableau lets you manipulate the data in various ways."
- "The price of Tableau is too high."
What is our primary use case?
I'm a computer science professor and I teach analytics. We use Tableau to teach students how to develop visualizations of data sets.
What is most valuable?
I like Tableau's heat maps and the storyboard. You can create data stories and tons of visuals with it, and it goes together really well. Tableau lets you manipulate the data in various ways. But since we are teaching, we have to accommodate the needs of the students. Often, we have to go back to basic stuff like Excel because that is what the students will be working with at whatever jobs they get. So we try to use the type of tools that their workplace will offer. We know Excel is widely used and Tableau is not.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been working with Tableau for about half a year or so.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's an individual solution so it works on as many desktops as you can download it to.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using Azure, but we're trying to get away from that because Microsoft is very expensive. We're trying to keep our expenses down while trying to find some decent products.
How was the initial setup?
Setting up Tableau is straightforward. You just can download it and set it up on your system in five minutes.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The price of Tableau is too high.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Tableau eight out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

Very easy data analyzation; user friendly
Pros and Cons
- "Very user friendly."
- "Implementation requires a technical background."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution to create dashboards, analyze data and create presentation of data to have discussions with clients. We also use it to sort huge amounts of data.
What is most valuable?
The solution is very user friendly, particularly in terms of the ease of analyzing data.
What needs improvement?
Tableau would be difficult to implement without training or the in-house technical support we have.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is very good, especially now that they've joined with Salesforce.
How are customer service and technical support?
We have support from within the company.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward because the solution is already set up in the company. It was just a matter of requesting it and downloading.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We have a global package but I'm not involved in licensing and don't know the cost.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I had a look at Qlik but didn't get a chance to really evaluate the benefits from one platform to another, other than what you find on the internet.
What other advice do I have?
I rate the solution nine out of 10, there's always room for improvement.

BI Solution Engineer at a tech company with 11-50 employees
The solutions web version makes it comparably easy to blend data
Pros and Cons
- "I like the solution's web version, more so than Power BI's web version. It just makes it easier to drag and drop things and to blend data on the backend. It simplifies the process."
- "The charting is overly complex in comparison with Power BI's"
What is our primary use case?
We are using the latest version.
What is most valuable?
I like the solution's web version, more so than Power BI's web version. It just makes it easier to drag and drop things and to blend data on the backend. It simplifies the process.
What needs improvement?
The charting is overly complex in comparison with Power BI's
The calculations are harder, as the focus is on a little level of detail instead of on making a column. Power BI and Tableau are a bit more detailed when it comes to creating calculations. It's not possible to merely add two columns together, but there is a need to build a calculation. Simply put, calculations can be a little more complex in Tableau. I'd like to see the ability just to add and subtract columns, to make it like a wizard.
For how long have I used the solution?
We are currently using Tableau
What other advice do I have?
The solution is deployed on-cloud, but I have the desktop version, as well.
As the product is comparable, I rate it as an eight out of ten.
Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
Manager - Customer Success at a tech services company with 10,001+ employees
Stable, flexible, but scalability needs improvement
Pros and Cons
- "The solution is configurable and flexible. We can customize the dashboards and configure the interface the way that we want. The data can be manipulated and arranged in different ways, such as columns."
- "The solution could improve the scalability, it is difficult to make changes."
What is our primary use case?
Tableau is a data visualization tool similar to Microsoft Power BI.
What is most valuable?
The solution is configurable and flexible. We can customize the dashboards and configure the interface the way that we want. The data can be manipulated and arranged in different ways, such as columns.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for a year and a half.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Tableau is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution could improve the scalability, it is difficult to make changes.
We have more than 50 people using this solution in my organization.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have evaluated Microsoft Power BI.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Tableau a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud

Data Analyst at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
Great for creating graphs and visualizations; very intuitive UI
Pros and Cons
- "Easy to create graphs and visualizations."
- "Lacks customization in some areas."
What is our primary use case?
I use this solution primarily for reporting purposes but also for visualizations and dashboards.
What is most valuable?
The real value of this solution is that it makes it extremely easy to create graphs and visualizations. It has a very intuitive user interface and it's a relatively easy learning curve, so it's easy to pick up for most people. It has some great out-of-the-box features.
What needs improvement?
I'd like to see a greater ability for customization because there are certain things that are lacking in that area.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable.
How are customer service and technical support?
I haven't dealt with the tech support but from what I hear they're pretty solid.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was quite straightforward.
What other advice do I have?
It's important to make sure that your data is in a good format before feeding it into the tool. It might also be worthwhile to have some sort of ETL tool to use in conjunction with Tableau, something like Alteryx or Tableau prep, because sometimes you may need to manipulate your data into a specific format to create the types of visualizations and things that you want. You might have the right data, but if it's not in the right format it might be difficult to do certain things in Tableau. My advice would be to get the ETL tool prepped and ready to go before you start pumping it into Tableau.
I rate this solution an eight out of 10.

Project Manager at a local government with 51-200 employees
Easy to use, stable, and offers competitive pricing
Pros and Cons
- "The stability seems to be very reliable."
- "There should be more widgets that would help less trained individuals create charts with less difficulty."
What is our primary use case?
I'm not using it on a daily basis. I've gone through the training and I've got my associate certification.
What is most valuable?
The solution is very easy to use and simple to understand. They make it very easy to navigate around it and to learn the product.
The solution is very easy to set up.
The pricing is good.
The stability seems to be very reliable.
What needs improvement?
Personally, I have not extensively used it, and therefore it's hard to think of areas that might need improvement as I haven't fully experienced every aspect of the product.
I'd like to see more advanced forms of charting, if possible.
There should be more widgets that would help less trained individuals create charts with less difficulty.
Tableau probably does not have advanced big data analysis features. It's not in the same category. It doesn't have those features to the same degree as R. You do this recreational; kind of modeling and analytics. It does have some predictive items, however, it's very simple. You can't customize much.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution seems to be very stable. I wouldn't say that we have used it in a big data kind of way. We don't have big data; we're not really able to test Tableau to the limits.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Most of the companies that we work with that use it are medium-sized enterprises and is typically public companies or government organizations.
How are customer service and technical support?
I can't really evaluate support services from Tableau. Our client agencies use them directly, and therefore they are the ones dealing with support. I don't have much experience on the support side.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Some of our clients also work with Microsoft BI. I'd personally worked with Talend, SAP HANA, and Power BI. I personally prefer Tableau due to its ease of use. With SAP HANA, I don't really have easy access to it. However, with Talend, if I wanted to, I could easily go to its website and download a copy of it.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of the product is not difficult. It's very easy and quite straightforward. A company shouldn't have any troubles handling an implementation.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It's my understanding that the pricing of this solution is quite reasonable and very competitive. That said, I haven't really done an in-depth comparison against competitors.
What other advice do I have?
We are consultants and not exactly customers of the product itself. We run projects. We give policy guidance.
I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.
If a company is looking for a way to create charts quickly, and communicate with charts, Tableau is definitely an easy place to start. Of course, users will need some training to understand how to create certain visualizations in Tableau. Other than that, Tableau is quite easy to set up. It's easy to connect to your data sources. Once you have connected to the data sources, you easily create the charts. There's a lot of options, a lot of charts that you can create. However, for the more advanced features, you definitely need some experience.

Easy to use, good interface, but installation could be simplified
Pros and Cons
- "I have found the solution easy to use and the interface is very good."
- "The setup was easy but we are having some problems with the configuration that is taking a long time. We have done some initial tests and some of the delays could be from bandwidth issues. However, the whole installation process should be simplified."
What is most valuable?
I have found the solution easy to use and the interface is very good.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Tableau for two weeks.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable compared to others solutions.
How was the initial setup?
The setup was easy but we are having some problems with the configuration that is taking a long time. We have done some initial tests and some of the delays could be from bandwidth issues. However, the whole installation process should be simplified.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We have evaluated Domo, Microsoft BI, and Qlik, and we have found Tableau is much better.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution to others.
I rate Tableau a seven out of ten.
