A cloud solution for security features like encryption, URL filtering, application control, and credential theft protection

What is our primary use case?

Zscaler is a cloud proxy that scans and provides security for traffic to cloud-based applications and resources.

What is most valuable?

Zscaler is location-independent. Even if you switch to another country, users will have the same security posture. For example, if you are in one country and travel to India tomorrow, you will still have the same security posture as the rest of your team. You will also be able to access all your resources over the Internet as a team, regardless of location. There is no dependency on local firewalls at the site. Everything is in the cloud, so you get security wherever you go.

Zscaler provides several security features, including encryption, URL filtering, application control, and credential theft protection. They are also updating their DLP capabilities.

What needs improvement?

The reports can be made easier. The solution takes time to fetch reports in the Database section. Otherwise, the reporting module itself is well-designed.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Zscaler SASE for two and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Zscaler is very stable. The customers use web services that cause issues over the internet.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Zscaler is highly scalable. Zscaler is a cloud-based service, so it takes care of all the data center and hardware infrastructure. Even if you only have one license, you will still have access to all of Zscaler's security features and performance capabilities. Around 2Lakh users are in Nestle, and all are using Zscaler.

We work with enterprise-level customers.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support is good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with Prisma Access. In terms of scalability and tech support, Zscaler is better. However, Prisma is better in other parameters because they have more experience in the firewall industry and are the leader in firewall technology. We at Nestle are forwarding most of our traffic to Zscaler for scalability. We are using Prisma for some essential functions.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. You have to plan very carefully how you are going to use Zscaler. Planning is critical, but implementation is achievable. You need to purchase cloud or host services and synchronize your user database to the rescheduler. Then, you just need to use the application to create a folder application on the system, and you are good to go.

Zscaler deployment time depends on the number of users and the policies to be deployed. A very simple setup can take around two to three weeks, while a very complex setup with multiple components can take months to implement.

What other advice do I have?

We are the service providers of Nestle, which is a user of Zscaler.

New functionality is always being added to Zscaler's products, but there are some features that we cannot have in the cloud-based platform. For example, Pulse QoS and VPN are still available as standalone products. However, Zscaler offers a variety of products that can meet these needs, such as ZIA, ZPA, and ZDA.

Maintaining Zscaler is easy. It has a well-designed admin portal and policy control. At least 20-30 people are required to manage the Zscaler product with a worldwide presence, depending on the setup. For example, Nestle requires 1-2 people to manage their Zscaler deployment.

I recommend the Zscaler solution. If I get an opportunity to use it in an environment where the users are mostly roaming users and the entire network stack is in the cloud, I will recommend they use Zscaler products. It's a great product.

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.

Good scalability features that ensure enhanced security and confidentiality of critical information
Pros and Cons
  • "Its impressive scalability allows the combination of multiple dictionaries and using them as one engine, resulting in narrower data loss gaps."
  • "The customers would benefit from more robust documentation and conversations around configurations, as it is slightly complex."

What is our primary use case?

We are currently using Zscaler Cloud DLP internally and it provides us with a robust and highly configurable Data Loss prevention engine, which meets our specific data handling needs.

How has it helped my organization?

We experienced many benefits, including improved visibility and the ability to identify vulnerabilities in existing configurations. Its impressive scalability allows the combination of multiple dictionaries and using them as one engine, resulting in narrower data loss gaps. There are significant enhancements in email and file confidentiality, particularly with integration to MCAS solution, which provides insights into permissions and access control for files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are its robustness and high configurability, particularly in relation to existing DLP dictionaries. The ability to choose and utilize specific dictionaries for various purposes, such as credit card checks or monitoring file permissions and transmissions within the corporate network. The platform allows the administrator to monitor who is sharing files and who has access to them, providing a proactive approach to data security.

What needs improvement?

The customers would benefit from more robust documentation and conversations around configurations, as it is slightly complex. Also, there should be an option for acquiring DLP as a standalone product rather than bundling it with packages, as this would provide more flexibility for customers who only need specific features. They should also provide more reviews and guidance on selecting the best-rated engines and dictionaries, as well as facilitating reporting for DLP violations and integrations with other cloud storage solutions.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using it for a year now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Zscaler sells internet access, not specifically DLP, so we had to build a point of presence for our location in Kenya due to latency issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It offers high scalability capabilities.

How are customer service and support?

We faced some issues regarding the business support from them due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of troubleshooting processes, which may be time-consuming. However, after we submitted the tickets, they did provide their support and eventually, solved our issues.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We tried a few different solutions, but we opted for Zscaler because we were already using other products from them.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation process was straightforward, with good support and training provided by Zscaler. We found it easy to roll out the cloud connectors and configure policies for DLP. The whole process took about three weeks with the help of three individuals, including myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Zscaler DLP solution is expensive, with a fixed pricing structure that is billed annually and monthly. There are no additional costs for licenses.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend having a clearly defined objective and goal, which would facilitate choosing and implementing the solution effectively. I would rate it nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Highly scalable solution but insufficient granularity in blocking
Pros and Cons
  • "The scalability is pretty good."
  • "The granularity in blocking is not sufficient, as new domains are automatically blocked for 30 days without further information."

What needs improvement?

Zscaler functions as a kind of proxy, but they lack responsiveness when it comes to customer requests. The granularity in blocking is not sufficient. For example, when a new domain is detected, it is automatically blocked for 30 days. If there is no further information, it is added to the trusted list. Attackers are aware of this and take advantage of it. They set up a benign site, get it categorized as safe, and then introduce malicious content afterward. Trying to get the categories reassigned or realigned is a challenge, as Zscaler is not very responsive in addressing such issues. In my experience, compared to BlueCoat, Zscaler falls short in terms of responsiveness.

For how long have I used the solution?

I'm currently reviewing Zscaler for our organization. We implemented it about two years ago. It's part of our zero-trust architecture initiative.

However, we need to compare it with NetScout. Zscaler has certain capabilities like SD-WAN, and the proxy is quite good. Although, I had to stop using SD-WAN because it wasn't integrating well with Microsoft or Kaspersky.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable. In my experience of about five years, I have only encountered two problems caused by it. So, I wouldn't rate it a nine out of ten. It's generally stable, with occasional issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is pretty good. I would give it an eight out of ten. However, their responsiveness to customer concerns is not as strong as other vendors I have worked with.

What was our ROI?

There is definitely an ROI. Before I joined my current company, it was implemented about a year and a half ago, and it significantly reduced noise and improved team visibility. The SOC has always been satisfied with its performance.

So, I believe there has been a good return on investment compared to my company's previous solution, Fortinet, which wasn't very effective. We are very happy with Zscaler.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When it was implemented, it beat the competition on price according to the two companies I know that have it.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution a seven out of ten.
