Rating shows fast restoration and reliable support with scope for improved integration and database backup options
The product needs improvement to become better. For example, we attempted to integrate with Postgres SQL server to backup the database alone, which was not supported. For this reason, we required a separate solution for database backups. While other SQL servers are supported, Barracuda Backup has limitations with database backups. The main area for improvement is integration and support for databases.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution has been stable for us."
"The solution’s scalability is good because its space is unlimited. We can start in Office365 with one terabyte bit of information and leverage through an enterprise solution of 1000 users."
"Barracuda email security works effectively with O365, and we have been able to achieve many use cases that other competitive products such as Micro, Fortinet, Trellix, or Forcepoint could not accomplish."
"One valuable feature of Barracuda Backup is that it can be used as thin VMware storage."
"The most valuable feature of Barracuda Backup is that it's on the cloud, so there is no need for hardware."
"Barracuda Backup is cost-effective because there is no licensing cost per server or VM."
"The initial setup is straightforward if you understand Data Protector."
"What we find most valuable in Micro Focus Data Protector is that it provides Japanese data protection, for example, it protects information such as the full Japanese name, address, etc."
"The feature that was most valuable was that we could restore one mailbox and we could do different backups for different databases."
"It's user-friendly and not overly complicated to configure."
"I haven't experienced any crashes while using the solution...Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"I like that Micro Focus keeps a separate catalog of our data."
"The solution is easy to use."
"Data Protector's granular recovery features make it easy for us to create and restore backups in an understandable and user-friendly manner. With granular recovery, any database or even just a database table can be restored at will."

Cons

"An improvement is required in reports and backups for sharing on Linux and Unix."
"In using Barracuda Backup, sometimes the VM has issues and becomes non-functional, requiring support tickets to resolve."
"It would be nice if a user could delete something and then recover it themselves. That would be a nice feature."
"The product needs improvement to become better. For example, we attempted to integrate with Postgres SQL server to backup the database alone, which was not supported."
"Barracuda Backup's user interface needs to be renewed as it appears outdated."
"Barracuda Backup's support could be improved because sometimes the support team is situated outside the country, leading to time zone issues."
"Integration with the market applications must be improved, such as MS Exchange, MS Active Directory, SAP and Oracle. Other backup tools are more efficient with the integrated backups."
"In general, you can say that Micro Focus Data Protector is behind in capabilities when compared with other backup solutions, such as Commvault, Symantec, NetBackup, but it is very strong for certain use cases such as array integration. We are using it in production even now. There should be some kind of cloud integration and archiving solutions. I think this is the area they need to focus on."
"The challenge is that we can't restore a single file from the VM in the data process when we do VM backups. But with Commvault, you can restore a single file even if you have a VM snapshot package. That's one drawback of this tool. When we do VM backups, it should help us browse the VMs to restore a single file instead of doing the complete VM restore."
"We're not satisfied with the robustness and stability of the software since Micro Focus took it in-house. The GUI is one thing they could improve. It's still a bit archaic. Data Protector needs a more functional, user-friendly GUI."
"Microfocus needs to build a partnership with other vendors in addition to HPE as far as cloud consolidation of backups."
"I'm uncertain if it supports virtual machine backup and restoration. If they could enhance this aspect, they could gain more support from end users."
"Micro Focus Data Protector must improve its overall evolution record. They need to focus on hardware based instant recovery, client recovery, and cloud ability. Now there is no cloud ability."
"OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"The pricing is neither too expensive nor very cheap."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
