Workflow orchestration has supported complex enforcement processes and improves human task integration
Areas that have room for improvement in Camunda include the user interface. We moved from Camunda 7 to Camunda 8, and previously we had Camunda 7 Cockpit, and now we have Operate. The UI of Operate is less user-friendly. It may be a little more modern, but it is less user-friendly, so some insights are missed. The UI could be improved. Another topic is something that should have been recently solved in Camunda 8, but in Camunda 7, we had a case management system based on Camunda, and we had our own identifiers in our system. It was easier in Camunda 7 to link these identifications, the business identification to the process identification, and in Camunda 8, this was not implemented until the 8.10 release. We really missed that feature, as it made it very difficult to embed and especially for debugging. The combination with the new Operate instead of Camunda 7 Cockpit made it difficult to find specific running processes. The maintenance of Camunda is somewhat complex. Recently, we had to move from 8.8 to 8.9 or 8.10, and everything was broken, which cost us a lot of time to repair and revert. The complexity is particularly evident because of the architectural changes Camunda made when moving from Camunda 7 to Camunda 8. It took about three years to make Camunda 8 mature, and sometimes it seems they realized they made a wrong decision by switching to a completely different approach. It is not just a matter of pushing a button and installing it; it has a bigger impact than expected, which is indeed one of the downsides we recently faced. The ability to observe and control processes at runtime, related to Operate, rates at a six in my assessment, so that could definitely be improved.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The amazing thing for me was how easy it was to deploy new processes and changes in the process models, which was super easy, super efficient, and super quick."
"The flexibility is great and I appreciate the compact and clear source code."
"Camunda is the best among similar solutions like JBPM and Activiti."
"Camunda BPM allows us to have a BPM bot with our own UI, and that's what we liked most about Camunda."
"The most valuable feature of Camunda Platform is its Microservices architecture, which is easily integrable with APIs."
"The headless nature of the Camunda Platform is something that has helped us to build our own logic and platforms on it."
"It has an open BPM"
"The ease with which I can define workflows is most valuable."
"I like that all the features come as part of a standard license and that one license covers everything."
"The stability of the product is very good."
"OpenText ProVision's best feature is the capability to attach a variety of attributes and extract and analyze that information."

Cons

"As we experienced some difficulties in the beginning, deployment took almost a month."
"Stability-wise, Camunda is good, but sometimes task queries get very slow when we have a large number of tasks."
"In the latest version, there are certain workflow nodes that are missing. Camunda should bring those back, or rather, develop them quickly."
"The migration strategy needs to be improved."
"Collaborations and process documentation in Camunda Platform are areas with shortcomings that need improvement."
"If there were some industry templates it would have helped significantly, because it is similar to a process map for a domain. That is what we are currently creating, a domain-relevant process map."
"In the future, I would definitely like to see the process administration (migration, audit, tracking) and process evaluation (optimize) features added to the community edition."
"It's costly and not accessible for small enterprises or startups. It would be great if Camunda offered a tier plan for smaller companies."
"My main complaint is that the solution is not open source in the sense that you can't have your own in-house developments."
"Integrating with or interfacing with other tools like data management tools would be very helpful."
"Lacks the ability to have your own in-house developments."
"OpenText ProVision's collaboration management is quite complicated and difficult to use."
"There are a number of drawbacks. Mainly, the collaboration is lacking to some extent - at least when it comes to how we are using it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We are using the open-source version, free of charge. We didn't bother with the enterprise features."
"Camunda has a free service as well as a commercial service. We are using the free service."
"We are using the paid edition because there is no separate support and service license yet. We are yet to find a suitable licensing model for Camunda because we only use the engine, and we have implemented our solution around Camunda Cloud. So, we are mainly interested in the support and service, and that's what we mainly use in the paid edition."
"Cheaper licensing and resources than competitors"
"We are using the community version. There is no licensing cost."
"We are using the open-source version of this solution."
"When compared with the proprietary products, the pricing costs are much less, even though it is an enterprise edition."
"The most attractive feature of the product is that it is open source."
