A good and stable solution with a straightforward setup
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is scalable."
  • "The solution is scalable, and approximately 1,000 users utilize the solution in our organization."
  • "The management of Dell Networker is quite cumbersome."
  • "The management of Dell Networker is quite cumbersome because we have to operate on a separate interface for reporting backup jobs."

What needs improvement?

The management of Dell Networker is quite cumbersome because we have to operate on a separate interface for reporting backup jobs. In addition, we have different interfaces, so we recommend it be consolidated into a single interface for all its operations. For example, my team and I have to hop on other interfaces and different applications to manage Dell Networker. Hence, it becomes pretty cumbersome for operations.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the solution for six years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable, and approximately 1,000 users utilize the solution in our organization.

How are customer service and support?

We have had a good experience with customer service and support. I rate them an eight out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

A partner did the initial setup, and we shared the venue. The setup was not difficult because we outsourced it to a consultant. So that consultant came in and deployed the solution for us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing could be more economical for organizations, so organizations like ours can adopt and utilize it to its full potential. However, at the moment, we have challenges with the pricing as it is quite costly.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution an eight out of ten. The solution is good, but it can be improved by consolidating multiple interfaces into one.

Good scalability and virtual environment protection but the interface is not user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "Good scalability and virtual environment protection."
  • "The valuable features are scalability, virtual environment protection, and the migration to OneCloud feature."
  • "The UI is not user-friendly."
  • "This is an expensive solution, in addition to which, the interface is not user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We provide this solution to our customers and we are partners with Dell. I'm an information consultant.

What is most valuable?

The valuable features are scalability, virtual environment protection, and the migration to OneCloud feature. All the features are excellent.

What needs improvement?

This is an expensive solution, in addition to which, the interface is not user-friendly. We're sometimes looking for a feature on one interface and it's on another. It would be helpful if they would centralize everything on one interface.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Dell support is the best in the world.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very complex but once that's done, the rest is easy. We've deployed this solution to 10 customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

NetWorker is a very expensive solution.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I usually compare NetWorker with NetBackup which comes with IBM Spectrum Connect. I think NetBackup is a better solution. In our country, it's only the communication operators who use this solution because they have more data to manage every day.

What other advice do I have?

This solution is suitable for enterprise-size organizations. I usually only provide NetWorker as an option if the customer asks for it. If it were my choice, I would recommend Veeam or IBM Spectrum Protect.

I rate the product six out of 10.

Good data recovery, has broad coverage, and works seamlessly
Pros and Cons
  • "The possibility of recovering up-to-the-moment data is very useful."
  • "It has lots of great features, and we don't find anything lacking."
  • "The interface could have a different appearance."
  • "Users need to have specific knowledge of the product before they jump in and use it."

What is our primary use case?

Usually, you can use this product to do the backups for almost everything. For first-party products, like SAP, it works well. It's good for security and protection and offers a repository for backups.

What is most valuable?

The possibility of recovering up-to-the-moment data is very useful. You can have any backup registry onsite. There's a special database, which will contain all index orders. The only thing you have to do is set up the backup medium with the proper backup. It's very easy to use.

There is really broad coverage as to what can be protected. That's the thing from the point of view of the usage and from the point of view of the technology itself. It's very important how it can operate easily and how it can be integrated with Data Domain.

Once it's set up properly, it works very smoothly. It's a pretty straightforward setup.

The solution is stable.

It has lots of great features, and we don't find anything lacking.

It is very scalable.

What needs improvement?

The interface could have a different appearance. It could be green or blue instead, for example.

Users need to have specific knowledge of the product before they jump in and use it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for 21 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable and reliable. The performance is good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. You can scale on one single computer up to hundreds of them on computers, or thousands of virtual machines with the same Networker products.

How are customer service and support?

Typically, issues are escalated to me, and I deal with problems on my own. However, I have been in touch with support. They are helpful and responsive.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've also worked with Avamar.

For the DevOps environment, I would prefer to go with Avamar. However, if I needed to set up something at the enterprise level, I'd prefer Networker.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward and simple. It's not difficult to set up at all.

Backup systems are one of the most tricky to maintain as there are so many factors that can influence the backup process. Not only the backup - also the computers themselves, the operating systems, can play a role. It takes a moderate level of maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I can't speak to the actual pricing of the product.

What other advice do I have?

I'm working with the latest version of the product.

I'd advise new users to know the product before you start to implement it. Very often, people start to deploy the system without product knowledge. Sometimes the product implementation is really bad. If the implementation is bad, so it won't work for you smoothly. So know the product implementation and features, and you should know which ones will be the design architecture of the system.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Depended on for backup but the integration with the environment requires improvements
Pros and Cons
  • "The software implementation takes about 30 minutes."
  • "The team does not have enough knowledge to support you."
  • "Technical support for Dell NetWorker is not good. The technicians are in the USA. When you open a ticket, they send the concern to India. There, the team does not have enough knowledge to support you."

What is our primary use case?

We use Dell NetWorker for backup on tape libraries and for integration with old systems.

What needs improvement?

The solution requires better technical support. There also needs to be improvements made to the integration with the environment. This includes an improvement made to the restored models for a lot of applications.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell NetWorker for 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Dell NetWorker is not the best solution, but it is decent. Many customers depend on it for backup.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell NetWorker is a software, it is not scalable. This is not required.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support for Dell NetWorker is not good. The technicians are in the USA. When you open a ticket, they send the concern to India. There, the team does not have enough knowledge to support you.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Dell NetWorker uses a software package that you can implement on the server, operating system, or on a virtual machine. The software implementation takes about 30 minutes. The integration with the whole environment depends on the size of the environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Dell NetWorker has two types of licensing models. One is a capacity license and the other is a circuit license for virtual machines.

What other advice do I have?

I do not recommend Dell NetWorker as a solution. I rate the product a five out of ten overall.

User-friendly, easy to install, scalable, and is very stable, but they should provide local support
Pros and Cons
  • "Deduplication is the most valuable feature of this solution."
  • "Because of the duplication feature, we were able to save a significant amount of storage space."
  • "I would like to see encryption included in the next release to encrypt the data that we are backing up."
  • "I believe that the area of support could be improved. They don't appear to have an adequate number of staff members to assist us if we have any problems."

What is our primary use case?

We use Dell EMC NetWorker for our database and applications.

How has it helped my organization?

Because of the duplication feature, we were able to save a significant amount of storage space. We do not have to duplicate the data that is being backed up to storage. With this feature, we can back up a single data set rather than multiple data sets.

It has enabled us to save a significant amount of storage space while also lowering our storage acquisition costs.

What is most valuable?

Deduplication is the most valuable feature of this solution.

It is very intuitive and easy to use.

What needs improvement?

I believe that the area of support could be improved. They don't appear to have an adequate number of staff members to assist us if we have any problems. It would be extremely beneficial if they could provide local support.

I would like to see encryption included in the next release to encrypt the data that we are backing up.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Dell EMC NetWorker for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable. We have no issues with the stability of Dell EMC NetWorker.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell EMC NetWorkerDell is a scalable product.

We upgraded to a newer version twice.

We have a large company with over 200 users.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy.

What about the implementation team?

We were able to complete the installation ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Dell EMC NetWorker is very expensive.

Licensing fees should be reduced. It is a bit expensive, but it is a good application.

What other advice do I have?

I used to manage the backups, but I am no longer responsible for them.

I would rate Dell EMC NetWorker a seven out of ten.

Good GUI, easy to manage and configure, but the support does not resolve issues
Pros and Cons
  • "The GUI is the best feature. It's very good and easy to use."
  • "As far as performance is concerned, and the working functionality point of view, definitely it is a good solution."
  • "Support is definitely an area of concern because of the time it takes to resolve our issues."

What is most valuable?

The GUI is the best feature. It's very good and easy to use.

It is very easy to manage and easy to configure the backup.

What needs improvement?

We are having some issues with some of the features. For example, the reporting, or the display of current licensing on the portal need improvement.

The reporting is not to our satisfaction and our main area of concern. It doesn't provide any form of analysis.

There is a delay in the offering from Dell.

Support is definitely an area of concern because of the time it takes to resolve our issues. We should not have to wait long periods of time to have issues resolved. When a complaint is logged the issue should be resolved within a reasonable amount of time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC NetWorker for 20 years.

We are currently working with version 19.0.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Version 19 has been stable, but there were several versions in between that had some issues, such as versions five, eight, and nine. In addition to the stability issues, there were some concerns with the performance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability for us is limited because we are using this solution for system backup. and not beyond that. We don't have any cloud, and we do not have any snapshot; it is simply a file system backup.

We have not yet explored scalability. Our requirement is a very basic one.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have contacted technical support for the issues that we are facing with some of the features and their response to us was that they are faced with some delays in resolving these issues. This is the reason that we are exploring other backup solutions.

We have several cases that are pending and have been for a very long time.

Support from Dell needs improvement. We are not getting the type of response that we were expecting from Dell.

The responses we have received from Dell have not been encouraging.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not an issue, it can be installed easily.

We have a total of 35 servers, that were installed individually.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing model can be traditional licensing or capacity-based licensing. We have traditional licensing rather than capacity-based because of our long history.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are currently evaluating other products as we would like to replace Dell EMC NetWorker with another backup software. We would like to carry out some PoCs to see which is the best. Feature-wise, we would like to know which is the best on the market.

We are also evaluating other products to see which features this solution is lacking.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution, but if asked specifically about the support then I would not recommend this solution's support.

As far as performance is concerned, and the working functionality point of view, definitely it is a good solution.

We have also used this solution for the last 20 years. Definitely, there is a level of comfort.

However, as of late, maybe when Dell had taken over from EMC, we have noticed there is an issue as far as support is concerned. We are not getting good support, which is what we are supposed to get from them, especially since we have been long-standing customers of EMC NetWorker. Regardless of what we were supposed to get, we are not getting it.

I would rate Dell EMC NetWorker a seven out of ten.

Stable, easy to set up, and offers good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The updated graphical interface is better than it used to be."
  • "We have found the stability to be quite good."
  • "There should be more vendors incorporated into the solution."
  • "In older versions, the graphical user interface isn't so good."

What is our primary use case?

Primarily, I use the solution in order to backup to tape, usually for long-term backups.

What is most valuable?

With NetWorker, I'm still trying to use it more now, as I wasn't so much in the past.

I like how easily I am able to recognize the labels, the barcodes on the tape. With NetWorker, once you know your tapes and you have your record of them, you should be able to identify them easily.

The updated graphical interface is better than it used to be.

The initial setup is very straightforward.

The solution is very stable.

We find the product to be scalable.

Technical support is very helpful.

What needs improvement?

In older versions, the graphical user interface isn't so good.

There should be more vendors incorporated into the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about two years or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have found the stability to be quite good. The performance is reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution scales well. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so.

We have five people working on the solution in our company.

We do not plan to increase usage at this time. In fact, we may switch to another solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have been satisfied with technical support. They've been helpful and responsive.

How was the initial setup?

A company will find the initial setup wot be straightforward. It's not complex or overly difficult. The implementation process is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I can't speak to the licensing costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are considering switching to Commvault. We're looking into it a bit more. However, that would depend on what the client would like to do. It's not up to us.

What other advice do I have?

I've been using the solution as a customer and an end-user.

I work on the latest version of the solution, however, I can't speak to the exact version number.

Currently, I'm just trying to find out if, let's say you've done a backup with NetWorker in the past, how are you'll be able to migrate that data to Commvault.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

Very scalable and stable, supports all kinds of backups, and can be used across multiple sites and locations
Pros and Cons
  • "It has the ability to support all kinds of backups. It can be used to back up databases, operating systems, virtual machines, Lotus Notes, and Exchange. It can also do remote image backups for remote sites. It integrates and works with Data Domain. It is an enterprise-class product that can be used for anything and everything across multiple sites and locations. It is also very scalable."
  • "Its console UI should be better. It should also have more out-of-the-box reporting functionalities. It should also have easier cloud integration. They have got cloud boost and things like that, but if you want to directly back up to the cloud, I'm not too sure whether you can do it. For example, you can easily send data from Commvault to AWS, Azure, or a container, but it seems to be not so easy in NetWorker."
  • "Its console UI should be better. It should also have more out-of-the-box reporting functionalities."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for backups and data protection.

What is most valuable?

It has the ability to support all kinds of backups. It can be used to back up databases, operating systems, virtual machines, Lotus Notes, and Exchange. It can also do remote image backups for remote sites.

It integrates and works with Data Domain. It is an enterprise-class product that can be used for anything and everything across multiple sites and locations. It is also very scalable.

What needs improvement?

Its console UI should be better. It should also have more out-of-the-box reporting functionalities.

It should also have easier cloud integration. They have got cloud boost and things like that, but if you want to directly back up to the cloud, I'm not too sure whether you can do it. For example, you can easily send data from Commvault to AWS, Azure, or a container, but it seems to be not so easy in NetWorker.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for a few years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very scalable. It is used by our customers, and their user base is quite large with around 3,000 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is very good.

How was the initial setup?

It takes half an hour to one hour. You can do it yourself, but sometimes, you may run into issues and require tech support. We have five people for 24/7 support for our customers.

If it is a virtual machine and you're upgrading the Networker version, you have to take a snapshot image before you upgrade it so that you can roll back to the earlier version in case you run into a problem. EMC doesn't support upgrades.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We do need to purchase a license, but sometimes, it comes as a part of the Dell Data Protection Suite (DPS). It has a capacity-based licensing.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution. We plan to keep using it.

I would rate Dell EMC NetWorker a nine out of ten.

User-friendly GUI and fast support, but container support should be improved
Pros and Cons
  • "The GUI is user-friendly."
  • "For a file system backup or one that is on disk or in a tape library, or for virtualization, I recommend using NetWorker because of ease of deployment, ease of use, and the user-friendly GUI."
  • "The process of upgrading versions should be improved because as it is now, you have to completely uninstall the old version first, and then install the new version."
  • "They cannot perform an incremental backup using VSS technology for SharePoint or MS SQL Server."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use cases are file system backup, endpoint backup, and virtualization backups.

We are using it with Quantum and Dell Data Domain.

What is most valuable?

The GUI is user-friendly.

The performance is improving. It used to be that NetWorker's performance was not very good but after integration with Data Domain, and after they switched to a quality-based network solution, the performance increased.

Over the past five to six years, the speed that NetWorker connects between networks and servers has improved. It used to take a long time.

We are using DD Boost and it is helpful.

What needs improvement?

The integration of the web API should be improved. There has been new functionality added to the API but it should be easier to understand.

The Backup module should be improved, especially the functionality for SharePoint and SQL Server. We are having issues when we are trying to backup up Microsoft applications, and it happens when the data is very large. For example, our database is 19 terabytes and this is very large for NetWorker, so it runs slowly. We are not able to tune it and segment it. If it were a file system, then we could split it into smaller pieces. In cases like this, it is very fast. However, because we are not able to divide it, the backup is slow. This is one area that can be improved because often, people don't need to take a full backup. Sometimes, then just want a snapshot of some data.

The capability of incremental backups should be included. As it is now, when DD Boost tries to compare the current backup with the previous one, it has trouble with the large versions and it can take three to four days. They cannot perform an incremental backup using VSS technology for SharePoint or MS SQL Server. Definitely, backup for Microsoft applications needs to be improved.

They should improve the support for backing up containers.

The process of upgrading versions should be improved because as it is now, you have to completely uninstall the old version first, and then install the new version. If we compare this to another product, like Veritas NetBackup, it also has good features but when you upgrade to the latest version, everything is automatic.

I would like to see better cloud integration, such as with AWS or Azure.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC NetWorker since 2007.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I am not in the operations team right now, but my impression is that it's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is easy to scale and I have not found any issue in doing so. However, there can be issues when a proper sizing tool hasn't been used. We have had trouble with giving requirements based on what the sizing tool reports.

We have approximately 100 people user NetWorker and supporting the customers.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support from Dell is very good and very fast. We have a very good collaboration with Dell, and we are one of the valued partners.

I have been dealing with issues related to one of the solutions that we have provided. One of the ones in the past two months is that the SharePoint Backup was supposed to be done using the Microsoft SQL Server writer. They do not support the third-party's product, which is fine, but it's an accountability issue. Ultimately, I don't think that they do all of the investigations properly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are currently using EMC Avamar in addition to NetWorker.

I have also worked with Commvault and Veeam, and the integration with virtualization is better with these products. They also support backup using VPN, which is something that NetWorker lacks.

I cannot name a feature that NetWorker has that you don't find in other products. There are, however, features lacking in NetWorker that do exist in other products. They need to keep pace with the ongoing requirements that are in the market.

How was the initial setup?

I have been working with this product for a long time, so I find the installation very easy. This is also an area that has improved over time, as it has because easier than it used to be.

The length of time required for deployment varies between environments. Recently, I deployed it and it took approximately 20 minutes end-to-end, with configuration.

What about the implementation team?

We deploy with our in-house team. Our operations team is responsible for maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing for NetWorker is in the mid-range. It is not very expensive and not very cheap. There are some extra features that required an additional license. For example, we save a separate data protection suite (DPS) license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have been evaluating EMC PowerProtect to compare the performance of it with EMC NetWorker.

What other advice do I have?

For a file system backup or one that is on disk or in a tape library, or for virtualization, I recommend using NetWorker. I say this because of ease of deployment, ease of use, and the user-friendly GUI.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

A complicated enterprise-level backup solution
Pros and Cons
  • "Storage-wise, EMC is user-friendly."
  • "The configuration is too complex."
  • "In my opinion, Networker is not a very good product; it's very complex compared to Veeam and other products."

What is our primary use case?

We mostly use this solution for file-based backups.

We are a global company. We use NetWorker and other backup products throughout the world. We have a very close and long-term relationship with the EMC Networker and we are not going anywhere. We have roughly 30 to 40 TB of data stored with them.

We use this solution daily.

We have scheduled backups, daily, weekly, and monthly and we use the dashboard as a monitoring tool; if there is a failure, we can reconnect all the operational activity.

I don't directly do the backups, my backup administrator coordinates with EMC regarding all configurations, upgrades, and operational needs.

What is most valuable?

Storage-wise, EMC is user-friendly.

What needs improvement?

The configuration is too complex. As a backup solution, it's not user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using EMC NetWorker since 2014.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Dell EMC NetWorker is stable. We don't have any issues scalability-wise, but configuring and upgrading are complex.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scaling out is very easy. We have a capacity-based license so we have no issues with the scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

I personally don't deal with customer support but due to multiple unsuccessful attempts to upgrade, my administrator is not satisfied.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are using Microsoft BPM in parallel; it's not an enterprise backup solution, but it is an alternate solution. EMC is a one-vendor solution — that's why we chose it, but it is not a good backup solution, it's a complex solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is complex. Currently, my team is doing an upgrade and they are having a lot of trouble. They have attempted it multiple times but are still unable to complete the upgrade.

What about the implementation team?

We are located in Pakistan, we have a vendor that supports and guides us. The configuration and upgrades are not simple compared to storage and other uses; it's much more complex.

We have our own team that takes care of all maintenance-related issues.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We're using a capacity-based license. My administrator can take backups as per we have the license. Our license includes support and maintenance.

What other advice do I have?

In my opinion, Networker is not a very good product. It's very complex compared to Veeam and other products. In short, we needed a single bundle solution, that's why we chose Networker. Overall, I think Veeam is better.

I don't recommend it because of its complexity and the updates, etc. We don't recommend that anyone uses Networker. We recommend looking into Veeam or another solution.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Networker a rating of five.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
