Easy to use, straightforward setup and scalable with VeloCloud integration
Pros and Cons
- "The EMS server gives us good control and central management."
- "The reports could be easier to set up."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use FortiClient for our VPN access.
How has it helped my organization?
We were on the free version before, then transitioned to the EMS server. Now that we transitioned to that, it's been extremely helpful.
What is most valuable?
The EMS server gives us good control and central management. The product is easy to use. Integration with VeloCloud allows immediate deployment, rather than having to wait six months for a piece of hardware.
What needs improvement?
The reports could be easier to set up.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've used it for five or six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution has been stable. It's been good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Yes, it's scalable.
How are customer service and support?
I had to call them to figure out how I was going to transition from the old unmanaged client, and we had to push out the new managed client. I reached out to them about how we were going to attack that, and they were good. Their engineers really know their product well.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward.
What about the implementation team?
We have a network engineer, so he's the one who deals with Fortinet.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Fortinet FortiClient an eight out of ten. It's so easy to use. I just wish the reports were a little easier to use.
We are going through a growth spurt, buying up many little offices. FortiClient integrated with VeloCloud allows us to convert them fast, and that's our end game.

Client Services Manager at a consultancy with 11-50 employees
A highly stable and easy-to-use solution that is suitable for small, medium, and enterprise businesses
Pros and Cons
- "Fortinet FortiClient is easy to use, and the single-access managed login is pretty good."
- "The solution's access control could be improved."
What is most valuable?
Fortinet FortiClient is easy to use, and the single-access managed login is pretty good. The solution incorporates the Microsoft portion of things, which is very nice. In terms of VPN, Fortinet FortiClient is a very good solution.
What needs improvement?
The solution's access control could be improved. It's a little difficult to work on access control because a lot of things are grouped under certain access groups in terms of things that go under gambling when sometimes they're not even gambling.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Fortinet FortiClient for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Fortinet FortiClient is a very stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We recommend Fortinet FortiClient for small, medium, and enterprise businesses.
I rate Fortinet FortiClient an eight out of ten for scalability.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support team's response time is good.
How was the initial setup?
The solution's initial setup is pretty straightforward.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate Fortinet FortiClient an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

Competitive pricing, centralized console, and useful Fortinet fabric to secure and track the movement of data through our network
Pros and Cons
- "Having a centralized console is a valuable feature. The Fortinet fabric is also very valuable where all different pieces talk together to secure our network and track the North, South, East, and West movement of files and data through our network."
- "Its stability can be improved. It is not as reliable as I would like it to be. There are times when things don't work quite right. Our biggest pain point is not related to Fortinet FortiClient and the whole scheme of things. It is related to one of the additional services called FortiGuard. They are the arm that does all of the updates to definitions, keeps all the signatures updated, and responds to new threats and whatnot. What we have found is that they react quickly, but sometimes their solutions aren't compatible with all of the components of the Fortinet security suite, specifically around FortiSandbox."
What is our primary use case?
We use it for securing all of our endpoints as they move behind our firewall and outside our firewall or in and out of our network. We are using its latest version.
What is most valuable?
Having a centralized console is a valuable feature. The Fortinet fabric is also very valuable where all different pieces talk together to secure our network and track the North, South, East, and West movement of files and data through our network.
What needs improvement?
Its stability can be improved. It is not as reliable as I would like it to be. There are times when things don't work quite right.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for about eight months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is not as reliable as I would like. Its reliability is around 95%. There are times when things don't work quite right.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We're a relatively small company, and we haven't expanded really large. We're in the 500 or less range, and it works fine for our environment. I don't know how scalable it is. We will continue to use it in the foreseeable future.
How are customer service and technical support?
They have been responsive. Sometimes, it takes them a little while to understand what the issues are. Fortinet right now has a little bit of growing pain. They have acquired a lot of different technologies over the last 18 months, and it hasn't been an absolutely smooth integration between all of those different products, support infrastructures, and developers.
How was the initial setup?
Its deployment was complex and drawn out. It took a long time.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its pricing is good. One thing that has always attracted us to the Fortinet range of products is that their pricing is very competitive.
Our particular licensing is on a yearly basis. However, as part of this project, we did pre-purchase three years of maintenance and support at a fairly significant discount.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution. They are developing more EDP as it comes out, and they are staying on track with their development side and current trends.
I would recommend others to talk to Fortinet Professional Services before using a local professional. What we found as part of our long implementation was that the local professionals generally have a very good grasp of one area but not in bringing the fabric together, where you have the EMS, Folder Manager, Sandbox, all the firewalls, and other things coming together. There may be some out there who are good at it, but we ran into a number that didn't have a grasp across the whole thing, and we ended up talking directly to Fortinet Professional Services.
I would rate Fortinet FortiClient an eight out of ten.
Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: Partner
Senior Network Engineer at a government with 5,001-10,000 employees
A trouble-free solution that allows us to connect to our partner's FortiGate gateway
Pros and Cons
- "It's pretty stable, and I don't have any problems with it."
- "I haven't found that that solution does anything amazing."
What is our primary use case?
We are using FortiClient for five to six users. Our primary use for this solution is to access a resource in our partner's network. They manage our call center.
How has it helped my organization?
This allows us to connect with our client who uses the FortiGate Firewall solution.
What is most valuable?
This is a standard VPN client, and it works for our requirements.
What needs improvement?
I haven't found that that solution does anything amazing. There is nothing special about it. It works trouble free just like any other client.
For how long have I used the solution?
One to three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's pretty stable, and I don't have any problems with it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability doesn't apply to the client. It works on a single endpoint. Scalability is something that is relevant to the FortiGate Firewall, and we do not use that product.
How are customer service and technical support?
Our partner is the one who runs the system, so if we need technical support then it is them that we contact.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
The other one that we use is AnyConnect, which is for the majority of our remote users. Only one of our partners requires us to use FortiClient.
How was the initial setup?
The setup is straightforward for a VPN client. The deployment takes about ten minutes.
What about the implementation team?
The implementation and deployment were completed in-house.
We just installed the clients and put in the configurations.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Anyone can download this product for free, but you have to have a FortiGate gateway that you are connecting to.
What other advice do I have?
This product is not terrible, but I don't have any basis in which to say that it is good.
Because we don't really have any problems with it, I would rate this product a ten out of ten.

Senior Network Engineer at a tech vendor with 11-50 employees
Helpful support, good reliability, and offers great VPN capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "It's very stable."
- "We'd like to see a deployment wizard to help implementation become streamlined."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for the VPN.
What is most valuable?
The VPN capabilities are good.
It's very stable.
It can scale well.
Techical support has been helpful.
What needs improvement?
We'd like to have a guided config process. We'd like it so that, when you want to configure something or allow new segments or servers, you launch a wizard, which will guide you on how to configure it.
We'd also like to see a deployment wizard to help implementation become streamlined.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is very good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable. I'd rate the stability five out of five.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We have about 300 people using the solution right now.
The scaling is pretty good. I would rate it four out of five in terms of its scaling capabilities.
How are customer service and support?
I've had a positive experience with technical support. They are very good.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I did not previously use a different solution.
How was the initial setup?
I was in the company when they were refreshing the hardware. I handled the setup. It's not very straightforward in that there are many steps involved. You have to define the separate routing and then deal with the portal for separate applications, and then have a policy for that. It took one or two days to do the deployment.
We only need two people to maintain the solution internally.
What about the implementation team?
We had the help of a consultant, a reseller.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We may have compared this solution to Check Point. We found Fortinet to be simpler and had better compatibility.
What other advice do I have?
We are customers and end-users.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Single point of management solution
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is the single pane of glass, single point of management."
- "One area that could be improved is cost, but you've got to pay for what you get."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case is when we've set up a Forti VPN or a IPsec VPN Full Mesh of 18 different locations on our FortiGates. It goes hand in hand with the FortiAPs as well.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the single pane of glass, single point of management.
What needs improvement?
One area that could be improved is cost, but you've got to pay for what you get.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is very good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability of the solution is very good.
How are customer service and support?
The tech support with Fortinet is phenomenal.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very straightforward.
What was our ROI?
Return On Investments for the solution would be about a 4 out of 5.We've set up Full Mesh and then we piggybacked on the ability to print anywhere. We have networked our phone systems together so that we can dial any of our locations on a four-digit dial, versus having to dial the 10-digit phone numbers. It's quick, it's easy, and a lot better for the staff.
What other advice do I have?
The biggest lesson I've learned with this solution is just keep the documentation up to date.
I would give this solution a nine out of ten.

Senior Director, Technical Support and Product Development at Exclusive Networks
Non-disruptive with a great interface
Pros and Cons
- "Fortinet FortiClient is not disruptive, and its interface is great. It has an in-built VPN, which is very useful."
- "There isn't much to improve in terms of features and comparison with other vendors. It just needs to stay more up to date in catching the malware. The user interface may be improved, which would be a minor enhancement. Unlike central management, in endpoint security, the end users don't need to keep looking at the endpoint user interface. The technology is the most important thing in endpoint security."

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for over ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Fortinet FortiClient is very good in terms of stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I don't find any problem at all. I can have one user or ten users. Scalability pretty much remains the same.
How are customer service and technical support?
I never had to call their support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I used to use Trend Micro, and it is pretty good. I have also used McAfee and a few different ones. McAfee is probably the worst in my opinion. It is very disruptive.
Both Trend Micro and Fortinet FortiClient are non-disruptive. They are pretty much like Microsoft Essential. Once you set them up, you never bother with the user interface. The interface stays in the background and does not interrupt the daily work.
What other advice do I have?
Fortinet has acquired a company called enSilo, which is into EDR. As a result, Fortinet basically has EPP as well as EDR. Generally, a lot of EPPs cannot coexist, but Fortinet EPP and EDR can coexist, so that's a plus.
I would rate Fortinet FortiClient a nine out of ten. It's very popular and easy to use. That's why I have stayed with Fortinet FortiClient for ten years.
