Great support with a user-friendly interface and a simple set up
Pros and Cons
  • "Backup jobs are running smoothly every day with job reports sent to email after they finish each job. That gives us peace of mind."
  • "More statistic options would be a great feature."

What is our primary use case?

For now, our use case is to backup two Hyper-V Servers with a total of 11 VMs.

The servers are in the same location on two different machines (Fujitsu Servers).

The repository is on Qnap with a secondary repository on a different Qnap in another location.

We plan to expand our backup system to workstations that run on Windows 10/11 later this year.

How has it helped my organization?

Our organization was running on Windows Backup and Recovery - with a backup of all servers and VMs to a remote location from time to time.

Now Nakivo gives us a reliable system that has more options - such as deduplication, replication, and disaster recovery.

Backup jobs are running smoothly every day with job reports sent to email after they finish each job. That gives us peace of mind. Nakivo was easy to deploy and configure in our environment.

What is most valuable?

First of all, setting up Nakivo was fast and easy to do.

Configuration of the repositories is simple and the connection to our Hyper-V host was automated and completed in a few minutes.

Setting up jobs to backup our VMs runs with no major problems.

Support for some questions or minor issues is great. It is fast and they offer exact responses.

The interface is user-friendly and easy to read (the dashboard has all information needed).

What needs improvement?

There is always room for improvement statistics could be a little better (job compare, overall job performance), however, Nakivo is a complete product with a lot to offer. Adding new items to the configuration is simple. The backups run fast, and the recovery and replication options are also easy to use. Job reports are clear.

We plan to expand our backup system to workstations as we only backup Hyper-V.

More statistic options would be a great feature.

Great for backups and data integrity with very helpful technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "Nakivo's backup and replication product has allowed us to implement a disaster recovery solution with a target repository in the cloud."
  • "Nakivo's implementation documentation could use a little beefing up."

What is our primary use case?

Our backup solution is quite unique. We have two data centers that require bandwidth throttling to ensure that business traffic does not get affected by the backup/restoration. Both data centers are using VMware, however, our smaller data center is using a small server that only has a single core. Therefore, we need to use the director from the larger data center which traverses over the VPN. This solution allows us to do exactly what we need, all while being very easy and very cost-effective.

How has it helped my organization?

Nakivo's backup and replication product has allowed us to implement a disaster recovery solution with a target repository in the cloud.

The biggest reason we went with Nakivo is the ability to rate limit and/or throttle the backup, ensuring that the traffic required to maintain our business operations was not interrupted.  This is very important. Nakivo's backup and replication product has provided us with a solution that meets our requirements.  We are definitely better off using this solution.

What is most valuable?

The feature that we have found most valuable would be the backup solution using bandwidth throttling.

While we need to back up our infrastructure, we also need to maintain operations and this allows us to do both.

We have our repository in the cloud which provides a backup solution in the event that a true disaster strikes, such as the building catching on fire and losing all equipment.

In order to maintain data integrity, we had to store the repository off-site and Nakivo has provided a solution that meets that requirement.

What needs improvement?

Nakivo's implementation documentation could use a little beefing up. There was a section of the implementation where we got stuck and had to contact Nakivo support to fix it.  It was a very simple fix, and once we got past it, the remainder of the implementation went very smoothly.

In addition, Nakivo's support team is very easy to work with. They were quick and got us up and running right away. Ideally, we would have preffered to have the documentation accurate so we didn't need to engage with the support, however, it all worked out in the end.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for about four months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is great - so far so good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Adding a second data center was a breeze.

How are customer service and support?

I've been extremely impressed with customer service and support. They are always there when you need them.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a different solution. We tried a number of different products out, however, we did not commit to anything as they didn't fit our needs.

How was the initial setup?

There were a few tricky pieces to the implementation, however, the support I received from Nakivo was top notch and they got me going ASAP.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the solution's set up in-house.

What was our ROI?

It's difficult to put an ROI on a DR solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Potential users should reach out to the sales team. They are very easy to work with and provide everything you need - including walking you through their free demo.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at both Barracuda and Crashplan.

What other advice do I have?

I have nothing else to add. I'm very impressed with their solution.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Straightforward to setup with great support and excellent backups
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup for physical machines and replication for the virtual environment are the most valuable aspects."
  • "They need to add a failover feature to the Essential Pro license in case the environment is a simple virtual environment and the client does not need to upgrade."

What is our primary use case?

I am using Nakivo for backup and replication in both virtual and physical environments. The product is excellent, easy to use, and has a lot of beneficial features. On top of all that, the support team is excellent they will assist from deployment to go-live, and have a great after-deployment support service.

How has it helped my organization?

I can say that Using Nakivo Backup and replication adds extra layers of redundancy to my client's environment.

What is most valuable?

The backup for physical machines and replication for the virtual environment are the most valuable aspects.

What needs improvement?

They need to add a failover feature to the Essential Pro license in case the environment is a simple virtual environment and the client does not need to upgrade.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used the solution for two months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

So far, the application has been very stable and does not require many resources from the existing environment.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Nakivo is very scalable and fits many environments and architectures.

How are customer service and support?

They have a great customer support and service team.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Nakivo, I used other solutions, however, due to pricing and license models, I preferred Nakivo.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution in-house and with a vendor team. They were very responsive and knowledgeable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Prior to choosing Nakivo, I did evaluate other solutions. I chose Nakivo for many reasons, from pricing to licensing models, to service and support.

Easy to install and use with great reporting
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup and replication are great."
  • "There is a familiar error that pops up and that is a VM error as much as it is a Nakivo error. It says that the job couldn't calm the VM and restores might be impacted. That error is, to say the least, a bit scary. I have seen this type of error on other backup systems also."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for the backup of VMs and some replication.

We generally use Nakivo to backup in-house VMs. In more mission-critical situations, we also use the replication aspect of the product. This ultimately means that we can just switch on new hardware over to a replicated server at an instant, thus taking a lot of pressure off us in the case of mission-critical operations. It's a huge plus in any IT department. The product's strength is that it is easy to install and very easy to administer. I highly recommend it.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has improved our organization a lot by making the product very easy to install and making it easy to understand its reporting.

Nakivo has improved our organization largely due to the fact that it is an extremely robust backup system.

It comes with a replication module that allows us to safeguard mission-critical servers. This has been applied on several sites by us with fantastic results as it becomes a great Plan B in case of a hardware failure or an outage of a primary system.

There is only one criticism and that is when we compared it with other vendors we found that although the backup speed was very fast, the restore speed was slower.

What is most valuable?

The backup and replication are great.

We like the comprehensive email notifications with attached reports. This reporting is very very easy to set up and is saved in PDF format, making it extremely simple to both share and organize. A complete history trail can be shown with this product from inception to end of life.

It also has allowed us to replicate such servers as SQL and Exchange which is invaluable in areas of disaster recovery and other SOS situations. In the past, this has been a lifesaver and has even gotten us accolades from one client in particular.

What needs improvement?

There is a familiar error that pops up and that is a VM error as much as it is a Nakivo error.

It says that the job couldn't calm the VM and restores might be impacted. That error is, to say the least, a bit scary. I have seen this type of error on other backup systems also. I'm not really sure what can be done with VSS writers, et cetera, however, maybe VMware and Nakivo should get together and solve the issue. A reboot of the VM and/or reinstallation of VMware tools nearly always solve the issue on the specified guest.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for a good few years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable running as an appliance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is not an issue and has never been a problem as it runs as an appliance. We simply add more memory and cores, et cetera.

How are customer service and support?

Support is excellent and turnaround time is very good. Nakivo is an exception in this area, in my experience.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We use both Acronis and Nakivo.

How was the initial setup?

Once we have installed this once, the learning curve is pretty much over. Its major strength is its ease of install and use.

What about the implementation team?

We self-installed the solution on our client's hosts.

What was our ROI?

I don't have figures, however, the ROI has to be high.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd advise users to check the core/CPU licensing to understand how the licensing is charged.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

These products, Acronis and Nakivo, are very similar, however, the replication from Nakivo makes it very attractive.

What other advice do I have?

The simplicity of installation and use is it's strength. I highly recommended it.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Simple to set up with excellent pricing and great technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The user interface in general is very good. I"
  • "Due to the fact that we are HP and Fugit partners as well, it would be nice if Nakivo would allow support for HP and Fugit storage."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is primarily used for small offices that are looking for backups for Microsoft 365 and they're looking for some local backup for their whole Office 365 environment.

What is most valuable?

The solution is a very cheap option. It's a clone of Veeam backup and it works in a very similar way for less cost.

They offer great support. The product offers chat options that are available right on the user interface, so at any time, you can reach out to support for assistance. I haven't seen a similar feature in any other solution. The Nakivo is the first one to have implemented it.

The user interface in general is very good. It's very lightweight. It's a web interface, which is quite good. In comparison, their main competition, Veeam, has an external web interface, which requires an additional component to be installed on the server which is not ideal.

The initial setup is simple.

They continuously implement new features. For example, they have brought support for storage devices recently and they are bringing support for duplication appliances. They're constantly growing.

What needs improvement?

It would be ideal if they offered a support portal for users. They should have a portal where the customer would be able to show all cases and the status of all cases and maybe create a new case. Instead, they support the solution directly on the graphical user interface inside their product. While it is easy to create a case in this way, a portal would still be an improvement.

Due to the fact that we are HP and Fugit partners as well, it would be nice if Nakivo would allow support for HP and Fugit storage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for three or four years at this point.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. It just works. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's pretty scalable. You have no issues expanding the solution if you need to.

Three years ago, I did not have many clients on the solution. However, over the last two to three years, the number has grown and more people are using it. Many are migrating over from Veeam.

How are customer service and support?

The support has always been very good. We are quite happy with the level of service we get.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also work with Veeam.

Veeam was the first solution that started to think about visualization backups. They were the first who started to offer this backup for a virtualized environment. Nakivo were the second and they basically cloned Veeam Backup. They created a cheap clone of Veeam Backup and the prices were much less than Veeam.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very straightforward. It's very easy to implement, especially if we're talking about mass installations. First of all, they support MaaS. They can install their product on a MaaS network and can attach storage directly. Veeam Backup does not have such an option at all. The installation is very straightforward due to the fact that the installation looks like I'm installing a new application on an iPhone. It can't be simpler.

You only need one person to handle maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the product is very good. they are quite reasonable and less than other options. They are directly competing with Veeam and offer similar services at less cost.

What other advice do I have?

We are partners with Nakivo.

While our company is using the on-premise deployment version of the solution, our customers are kind of a mix. Some of them use the cloud version and have a backup for the cloud environment. Some of them use on-premises as well.

If customers are looking for a global data application without using any appliances, for example, if they want to try to duplicate all backup jobs together, then Nakivo Backup would be the best option as it has a global data application and Veeam Backup doesn't.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten. I like the solution, however, there is always room for improvement.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Has a convenient and easy web interface and excellent technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is good for protecting very low-budget offices, whereas other solutions fail in terms of cost and footprint of the VMs involved."
  • "There are many features we have not had the opportunity to try, such as Tape Backups, Office 365 backups, and many other things."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution to backup and replicate business-critical VMs - on the same network or off-site - and to test new updates on flash boot restores. This enables us to verify a broad range of scenarios such as expanding disks or upgrading whole machines to newer OS versions

We use the product on vSphere as a VM or directly on the QNAP with the added convenience of not needing to create an ISCSI device which prevents locking all the space on the QNAP.

The new licenses per workload are very nice for small customers since they have a low price and are not tied to the number of CPUs.

How has it helped my organization?

It was useful to migrate via replica from an old 5.0 ESXi to the newer 7.0 by simply deploying the transporter and crossing the two systems. From there, we replicated the VMs and switched over, which was as easy as stopping and restarting the VMs, limiting the unavailability of the systems involved to a couple of minutes.

To migrate a VM from HyperV to vSphere when a customer needed to change the vendor of the hypervisor produced the same results as above. We also had the opportunity to test it offline prior to full deployment.

What is most valuable?

The solution offers many useful features, including Flash Boot, transporters on different platforms, native QNAP APP, and virtual appliances with no need to install a Windows machine to install the "app".

The virtual appliance does not need to maintain a dedicated Windows machine, with its antivirus, security risks, added costs, and other issues.

The coverage reports are well designed and give us the ability to have a fast check on what is protected or not.

The SW automatically protects a VM if it is added to a protected VAPP.

The SW is very flexible and complete for our use cases.

There are many license types and levels so that every customer can find the right balance between cost and features.

The web interface is convenient and easy.

The SW is very scalable in every aspect.

The product is good for protecting very low-budget offices, whereas other solutions fail in terms of cost and footprint of the VMs involved.

What needs improvement?

There are many features we have not had the opportunity to try, such as Tape Backups, Office 365 backups, and many other things.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is very kind and responsive.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We've used many other solutions however, Nakivo is a good standard for us.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy; we just deploy the VM or APP on QNAP.

What about the implementation team?

We resale the product and use it ourselves as well.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a high ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution has a reasonable license cost and can be set up in minutes.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have looked at Veeam and others.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Stable, easy to set up and offers perfect functionality
Pros and Cons
  • "Nakivo makes our backs-ups more reliable and easy to recover in case of full damage or partial retrieval of files - all at a convenient cost."
  • "I need no more valuable features for backs-up. I have not yet tried the latest release, however, I have all the features that I need."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for VM replication and backup.

We replicate 6 VMs (both Windows and Linux) from one ESXi host to another ESXi host (VMware) and we make backs-up to a NAS of all 6 VMs with various types of retention. We used Nakivo also to duplicate the VMs for upgrade purposes on the server infrastructure. VMs are both servers and client machines.

How has it helped my organization?

Nakivo makes our backs-ups more reliable and easy to recover in case of full damage or partial retrieval of files - all at a convenient cost. Every time a user asks us for a missing file to be retrieved, we can satisfy his/her request in a few minutes. Notifications of Nakivo make us sure of the accuracy of backup jobs.

What is most valuable?

VM replication is a great solution. Now, I can also duplicate VMs without the need for a vSphere vCenter server. It's with easier ESXi hosts. Also, for system administration purposes (tests, upgrades, etc.) it offers perfect functionality.

What needs improvement?

I have no remarks. I need no more valuable features for backs-up. I have not yet tried the latest release, however, I have all the features that I need. The web interface is very usable and easy to understand, as is the planning of backs-up. The granular recovery is very useful for the ordinary activities of users. I have no comparison with other products, so I can't imagine other features.  No remarkable features are missing for me.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution since 2018.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In about 3 years, we have never had stability problems and the appliance has been running 24/7/365.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not tested scalability, so I can't give an opinion.

How are customer service and support?

Italian support of the vendor is quite good and competent. Sometimes they are slow to respond.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our previous backup solution was a self-made server script without replication capabilities and only backed up at a file system level, not at a block level.

How was the initial setup?

It's an easy setup of the appliance.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented via our internal team.

What was our ROI?

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veem was more (and too) expensive for small companies. Nakivo was at the correct price point.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also evaluated Veem.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Easy to learn with a intuitive user interface and great VM backup verification
Pros and Cons
  • "Nakivo offers direct support through the graphical interface and this is great to have if you need quick help."
  • "Log and report creation can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is primarily used for backup and replication of virtual environments based on VMware ESXi located in different company sites.

I use Nakivo B&R to provide Disaster Recovery and backups of complex VMware environments.

I have multiple datacenters centrally managed and need a solution that's scalable, simple, and also has enterprise-grade features that give me complete control of backups.

Initially, the solution was going to be an alternative to a primary backup. Now, it is always a must-have in our environment.

There's a simple interface and a lot of options. Installing directly on a NAS appliance is a must.

How has it helped my organization?

First of all, the price and the order process of Nakivo B&R are very attractive and simple.

We have a lot of QNAP appliances and Nakivo Backup and Replication supports them. This is very useful. I can install the suite directly to the NAS appliance and the transport package on a small QNAP across my datacenter's infrastructure.

The product has almost the same features of Veeam Backup and Replication at a lower price point, and this is very attractive.

The enterprise version is a solid product with good support, a lot of features, and a helpful knowledge base.

What is most valuable?

It has a simple and intuitive user interface and the fast learning curve is amazing.

Another very useful feature is VM backup verification. Nakivo B&R takes the backup, boots the VM, and takes a screenshot. In this way, I can be sure that the backup or replication job is consistent.

Another great feature in version 10.4 is the immutability of the backup repository. This is a must-have in order to protect against ransomware attacks.

Nakivo offers direct support through the graphical interface and this is great to have if you need quick help.

What needs improvement?

The solution needs a high availability feature in case of loss on the primary site. This would be very attractive as a part of configuration backup.

Another great additional feature would be an automatic upgrade of the transporter package in case of an upgrade of full product. In my environment, I have many transporters at different datacenters and I need to perform a manual upgrade process at this time.

Storage snapshot integration for the EMC Unity appliance is another missing feature.

Log and report creation can be improved.

The graphical user interface can be made better.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nakivo B&R for about 4 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is very stable and offers great support.

I had no problem using it in about 4 years

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very easy to expand the repository and to deploy it in a different data center.

How are customer service and support?

There are no issues in regards to customer service and technical support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I still use Veeam Backup and Replication as the main source of backup jobs, but Nakivo is very attractive and offers the same functionality at a very interesting price.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process is very easy. I use Nakivo directly installed on QNAP appliance and in about five minutes I can start working.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is very easy to set up and has direct support of the NAS appliance at a very interesting price.

It is a product that is very easy to order.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
