I'm a pre-sales architect. I architect, and I sell them as a partner with Pure Storage on the VAR side. Our customers use it for storage, mainly block-based storage and virtualization storage. Some solutions have both block and file storage, and some solutions only have file storage from Pure.

Provides protection against ransomware threats with immutable snapshots, and it is well known for its scalability, ease of use, and non-disruptive upgrades
Pros and Cons
- "One of the features that my customers are really interested in is immutable snapshots. There are immutable snapshots to which your applications can be reverted back if you are hit by some kind of ransomware threat or malicious attack. That's kind of a key deal, and it is one of the selling points I use to point out to my customers the value and the features that Pure Storage brings to the table."
- "I like what they're doing, but some of my customers complain that they do not have all the bells and whistles and knobs to fine-tune workloads that some of the competitors have. In my opinion, that's good. All customers don't have dedicated storage gurus, and they can get themselves into trouble if they fine-tune too many of those high-performance knobs, but they do get knocked down. Pure Storage takes a hit in the minds and opinions of some of the customers because they cannot customize things as much as compared to a legacy storage provider's appliance such as NetApp, Dell EMC, or even HPE. I personally think 95% of my customers are better off letting the system fine-tune itself. That was something that you needed to do 12 or 15 years ago, but now with all-flash, the technology can handle what it needs to handle. Customers just end up shooting themselves in the foot if they are tweaking too many default settings."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
It provides additional protection against ransomware threats. If you are hit by some kind of ransomware threat or some kind of malicious attack, you can revert your data back in time to a previous version or snapshot.
What is most valuable?
One of the features that my customers are really interested in is immutable snapshots. There are immutable snapshots to which your applications can be reverted back if you are hit by some kind of ransomware threat or malicious attack. That's kind of a key deal, and it is one of the selling points I use to point out to my customers the value and the features that Pure Storage brings to the table.
Scalability, ease of use, and non-disruptive upgrades are also valuable. They're not using flash just for your tier one storage needs. They're recommending flash for data protection and archive backup, which is the way to go.
If you get the gold support, which is what I sell and recommend for my customers, Pure's support personnel will take care of both software and hardware upgrades, which is another feather in Pure's cap. They make several claims that once you move to Pure Storage, you can take your team of five dedicated storage admins and trim it down to just one person. Their mantra is getting customers out of the game of managing storage and letting the vendor manage the storage. They want to see their customers just consume storage. They have non-disruptive upgrades. You just set up the software and hardware and just consume the storage. They're continuously looking at the dial-homes, the logs that are automatically sent, and fingerprinting potential issues before they're even a problem. That cuts down on a lot of support tickets the customers have to open up. They'll proactively open up tickets when they see something in their analytics on a particular customer's array and recognize that one of their hosts might have a certain HBA with a fault or a bug. They reach out and open a ticket. So, you get your system upgrade, patched, or whatever is needed to resolve the potential problem.
What needs improvement?
I like what they're doing, but some of my customers complain that they do not have all the bells and whistles and knobs to fine-tune workloads that some of the competitors have. Customers just end up shooting themselves in the foot if they are tweaking too many default settings.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Its stability is very good. I have not heard any of my customers having issues with FlashArray. It is very solid. They claim 99.9999% availability. I haven't had any problems with outages with my customers.
They have another product called FlashBlade, which is a different type of storage appliance that Pure does for unstructured files. FlashBlade doesn't rank as high in reliability as their flagship FlashArray product does. The FlashBlade product is a notch below. It is a newer product or code, and I have heard of some issues with it.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Its scalability is very good. It scales up instead of out, which is typical for a block-based appliance. It is very easy to add expansion shelves or disks. You don't need to worry about shuffling drives around and creating RAID groups. This is all legacy stuff. Most vendors are now the same, but I really think that Pure led the effort for non-disruptive upgrades. They coined the term, and other vendors have since followed suit. They're the leader in the industry for that.
How are customer service and support?
Their regular support is good. With gold support, Pure's support personnel takes care of both software and hardware upgrades. The only difference between free support and gold support is that you don't get free hardware upgrades with free support. If I understand the offering correctly, software upgrades are still included.
How was the initial setup?
If we're just talking about Pure Storage, it is straightforward and simple. You can get it up in minutes as opposed to hours that some of the other solutions take. Compared to its competitive solutions, Pure is very well known for its simplicity and ease of use, especially during setup and initialization.
A single 2U appliance from Pure Storage for block-based workloads, including rack stack and initialization, is ready to be provisioned to your servers in an hour or an hour and a half to the max. It is definitely straightforward.
If you get the gold support, Pure's support personnel will take care of both software and hardware upgrades. So, you don't have to manage storage. Pure takes care of that.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pure is typically more expensive than everyone else. You get what you pay for, but I have lost deals to similar solutions because of pricing.
They include everything, and that's another positive about Pure Storage. They aren't trying to nickel and dime their customers for different features. It is all included in one price. The license is by capacity, and the price depends on the capacity and the discount we're getting from the vendor. You get the SKU of the physical appliance, support, and maintenance, and that's it. You're licensed for whatever feature they offer. It is all rolled up into the price of the appliance.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise others to chose well. Prepare to have extra time on your hands to focus on your business's core needs and outcomes and not having to worry about the day-to-day maintenance of your storage appliance.
All my customers are pretty happy with most Pure Storage solutions. They might ask for customization level, but I think Pure is doing the right thing by its set-it-and-forget-it approach. Most customers don't need to fine-tune and customize their all-flash storage appliances anymore. It is not a legacy spinning disk appliance.
I would rate Pure Storage FlashArray a nine out of 10. Its pricing sometimes plays a big part where customers might go in a different direction, and that's the only reason why I'm not giving it a 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Virtual Storage Administrator at a tech vendor with 51-200 employees
A stable and scalable product that functions amazingly fast in terms of speed once it is up and running
Pros and Cons
- "Pure Storage FlashArray's overall speed is its most valuable feature."
- "The initial setup of the product is complex."
What is most valuable?
Pure Storage FlashArray's overall speed is its most valuable feature.
What needs improvement?
Pure Storage FlashArray is painful in certain areas, and because of this, in my company, we wish it was made to be a bit more user-friendly, especially in a VMware environment, so that it can be made less of a cumbersome process. I don't know if its less user-friendly nature in a VMware environment is indicative of some of the encryption features and other stuff of Pure Storage FlashArray. Pure Storage FlashArray would just be easier to manage if it didn't have to jump through so many hoops.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have experience with Pure Storage FlashArray. My company is a customer of Pure Storage FlashArray.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is a stable solution. As long as you don't accidentally cut the power off in your company, the product remains stable, making it pretty reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a scalable solution.
How are customer service and support?
The solution's technical support is good. I rate the technical support a nine to ten out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of the product is complex.
What about the implementation team?
Pure Storage FlashArray's team had to install the product in our company.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Cost-wise, I imagine that the product's price would probably give you a nosebleed if you were a younger company.
What other advice do I have?
Pure Storage FlashArray is a solution that can be described as a product that functions amazingly fast in terms of speed once it is up and running.
In our company, we only semi-manage the product. Three people who look after server infrastructure, networking infrastructure, and virtual infrastructure in my company look after the product's maintenance.
I rate the overall product an eight to nine out of ten. I wish the product wasn't cumbersome to do certain things and should provide a little more flexibility.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

CEO at Lynx View
A great enterprise solution helpful with performance, reliability and cost
Pros and Cons
- "We find the ease of usability and setup valuable."
- "Pricing could be better in comparison to other solutions."
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case for this solution is focused on enterprise solutions, a support solution that needs either performance, reliability or cost. For example, most companies have databases, virtualized workloads, or VDI workloads. So with those kinds of environments like the Block Storage, it is perfect because it switches very well with the cost, performance, and reliability ratio. Additionally, it's easy to deploy to benefit the IT team in the management costs.
What is most valuable?
We find the ease of usability and setup valuable.
What needs improvement?
Pricing could be better in comparison to other solutions. The amount of storage the customers receive is approximately 20% higher when you compare it with similar solutions. So it can be a problem when you are positioning the product.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using the solution for seven years as partners and are currently working with the latest version.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is highly scalable, but scalability is sometimes undervalued, but everyone can scale. In the case of Pure Storage FlashArray, our experience with upgrading the capacity only involved changing the controllers. So, for example, if you have 20 terabytes and want to go to 100, you only have to change the controllers when paying for that storage capacity upgrade. You can also include the controllers, and the controllers' upgrade does not impact production. You can do it without stopping, so the upgrade of the machines can start with the smallest to the biggest machine that can deploy up to five petabytes. If you cannot do it smoothly, you don't have to stop production and will not have a disruption.
How are customer service and support?
Our experience with customer service and support has been very good. It is very good even though they are still growing, and they are very responsive to issues. They promise a 15-minute response time and are very good at keeping that promise.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward. Two engineers are usually tasked with deployment.
What was our ROI?
Our return on investment is good.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The licensing cost is close to zero. Every new function or functionality is included when paying the annual maintenance. Our customers value it because the maintenance is always the same regardless of whether it's the first year, the seventh or the tenth year. Additionally, the products use the same operative system with new capabilities, like ransomware and safe mode. Another thing that is quite nice to have is outstanding performance. They can provide a lot of performance, so there is not a lot of difference. Still, efficiency is something customers value because the compression can be up to twice of the second competitor. I rate licensing costs a ten out of ten.
What other advice do I have?
I rate the solution a ten out of ten. The solution is good but can be improved by improving upgrade prices.

IT Contractor at a financial services firm with 51-200 employees
Good replications, excellent resiliency, and helpful support
Pros and Cons
- "The scalability is good."
- "There was some complexity in the initial setup."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for storage.
How has it helped my organization?
It has improved the way our organization functions by improving the resilience of our infrastructure by quite a bit.
What is most valuable?
The tool size is good. We have a tool size and then each size has one Pure Storage and they form the active cluster. We can just access the data on both sides with a uniform access design.
The scalability is good.
It can do some replications. They're very easy to perform.
What needs improvement?
We're quite happy with eh solution overall. I can't recall coming across any features that were lacking.
There was some complexity in the initial setup.
While they've improved a lot, many features have been released recently and they are not that mature just yet. My understanding is they just released some features, for some transport services over the NVMe and then the file service. However, the file service is not so mature. I had some problems with the file service when we used it.
Other new features, such as the active clustering over the FC, and the verification over the FC feature, we didn't use. We have to have a trial on it first before commenting on it.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's very, very, very stable. There are no performance degrades during any upgrade or replacement of the parts.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product is extremely scalable.
There is only one person using the solution currently.
How are customer service and support?
I've dealt with technical support previously. Their response is fast and mostly very, very helpful. We just need to enable the remote console on the array and then they just can easily troubleshoot by themselves. That way, we do not need more time to work with them. They just fix the problem for us.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also use HPE Nimble. This solution scales much better. That said, it is a bit more complex to implement when you compare it to Nimble.
There are two different classes in our design. We put more critical applications on Pure due to its stability and resilience. Less important or less critical applications or servers are on Nimble. However, the capacity of Nimble is far larger than Pure Storage.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is more complex than the Nimble. Mostly the configurations must be done by the Pure engine at the back end.
It took two or three weeks to deploy the solution.
You only need one person to deploy and maintain the solution.
What about the implementation team?
We handled the initial setup by ourselves. We did not need any outside assistance from any integrators or consultants.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
With Pure Storage, we buy the array and then all the features can be enabled on that.
It is more expensive than Nimble. The price is likely double Nimble's.
You do not have to pay for any extra features or add-ons. Everything is included.
What other advice do I have?
I'm a customer.
We use the Pure Array X model with a version of Purity 5. Recently, we bought the Pure C series.
We use it with a private cloud and on-premises as well.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Hardware Architect at a comms service provider with 5,001-10,000 employees
Stable NVMe storage solution with an easy setup, lower response time, and good technical support
Pros and Cons
- "NVMe data storage platform that's easy to set up and easy to use. It's stable, with a lower response time, and quick technical support."
- "The backend of this solution utilizes an Active/Passive architecture, rather than an Active/Active architecture, which is a disadvantage, when compared to some of its competitors. Its storage capacity should be expanded in the next release."
What is our primary use case?
Pure Storage FlashArray is applicable for virtual environments, e.g. CSS, VR, and YouTube platforms. It's an NVMe data storage platform.
What is most valuable?
One of the things I like about Pure Storage FlashArray is that it has a high data reduction average, e.g. 4.5.
Pure Storage FlashArray is also advantageous for data centers in terms of rack space for maximum capacity.
What needs improvement?
Many high-end platforms from other vendors like Dell EMC or Hitachi, their backend has Active/Active architecture, unlike Pure Storage FlashArray which doesn't utilize an Active/Active architecture on the backend. Instead, it has an Active/Passive architecture. Its frontend is Active/Active, but its backend is not. I see this as a disadvantage of this product.
The highest storage capacity of Pure Storage FlashArray is the petabyte, and it should be expanded. This is what I'd like to see in the next release.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This product is stable. It's working very well. Our elementary response time is 0.5 milliseconds, and with 100,000 IOPS in our virtual environments.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support for Pure Storage FlashArray is good. Support is quick and responsible. We get quick responses from the team.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Pure Storage FlashArray was easy. It was completed within one hour.
What about the implementation team?
Pure Storage FlashArray was implemented by a local product solutions team.
What other advice do I have?
I'm working for a telecommunication company, and we use different products.
We have five people in our company working with this product.
My advice to people who want to implement Pure Storage FlashArray is that it's a good NVMe solution, has a lower response time, and also good for entry-level storage purposes, e.g. small offices, small to medium-sized business, etc. It's also easy to use, e.g. comparable to an iPhone in terms of ease of use. This solution also works very well on the Active/Active version, for combining two storage.
I'm giving Pure Storage FlashArray a score of nine out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
MTS - Core IP Engineering at a comms service provider with 10,001+ employees
Provides ease of management, reduces provisioning time, and is straightforward to deploy
Pros and Cons
- "The availability and ease of use are the big features."
- "Larger capacity and more storage ports would be the two things I'd like to see."
What is our primary use case?
We use it for block storage workloads. We don't use a lot of the features on it.
How has it helped my organization?
It has reduced provisioning time. There is ease of management.
What is most valuable?
The availability and ease of use are the big features.
What needs improvement?
Larger capacity and more storage ports would be the two things I'd like to see.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with this solution for about three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It has been really stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
That's the only feature that isn't as good. It doesn't scale as large as some of the competitors, but they have started to make them bigger.
We probably have a dozen or so admins who use it, including me. I take care of its maintenance. It is pretty light in terms of maintenance.
It is being used extensively. We'll be increasing its usage. I'm on the networking side. Our IT group is a pretty heavy user too. Both of us will be increasing its usage, but their scale is a little bit bigger than ours.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate them really high. On a scale of one to five, I'd give them a four.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Dell EMC and NetApp would be the two big ones that we used before. We switched because of the cost and the ease of use. Those are the two big ones. In terms of the cost, a lot of it was just introducing a second vendor.
How was the initial setup?
Its setup was really straightforward. It took about half a day. It is pretty quick. All the cabling and facility stuff is usually the longest part.
What about the implementation team?
We had the vendor do most of it. It is like a team, and there is usually one installer guy. Our experience with them was great. Our account team with them is really good.
What other advice do I have?
Its setup is easier than you think. It is a pretty straightforward deployment.
They have been correcting a couple of things. One of them was that they didn't really scale that large. So, we had to deploy a lot of arrays. They have started to make them bigger now. In addition, until recently, they didn't do a file on the FlashArray. Now, you can share files on it. They recently implemented that, but we haven't tried it yet.
I would rate it a nine out of 10. It does everything we wanted to do.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

KYC Quality Assurance at a financial services firm with 10,001+ employees
Quick and responsive performance, good compression and deduplication features, responsive support
Pros and Cons
- "The compression and deduplication features help to make the best use of the capacity."
- "The system has dual controllers but does not have a high level of resiliency built-in."
What is our primary use case?
This product is for database usage and consolidating performance.
How has it helped my organization?
The Pure Storage FlashArray provides us with faster data access. Our processing time is faster for tasks that used to take a long time before. Now, it's a lot quicker and more responsive.
What is most valuable?
The low latency and the performance, in general, are very good.
The compression and deduplication features help to make the best use of the capacity.
Replication and active-active features are available.
What needs improvement?
The system has dual controllers but does not have a high level of resiliency built-in. For what the peak says, I'm very happy with it. However, if you compare it to similar devices with multiple controllers that are scaled-out, it's not a true active-active.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Pure Storage FlashArray for approximately one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Over the past year that we have been using it, the stability has been good. That said, we're still testing it. It is very low maintenance; on the Pure side, they don't have much involvement apart from a bit of monitoring.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We've not had to increase the capacity yet but it does have the flexibility to scale if we need to. At this point, we have 25,000 end-users and we don't expect that to increase. Our user base is fairly static.
How are customer service and support?
We have been in contact with technical support a couple of times. They are quick to respond and we are very happy with the customer support team.
The support plan makes it simple to plan ahead.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We have used other flash arrays in the past.
How was the initial setup?
This initial setup is very straightforward. A couple of hours on-site is all that was needed for the engineer to complete it. It took that long to make sure that everything was in place and available.
Overall, it is very simple.
For the deployment, we didn't need many people but we do have a wider storage team that deals with it.
What about the implementation team?
Installation was included with the purchase. We didn't do it ourselves.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There are no licensing fees aside from the support. The support plan is simple and quite easy to understand, and it covers issues such as hardware failures.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated all of the options that were presented to us at the time, and Pure won.
What other advice do I have?
Feature-wise, there's nothing specific that is lacking for us at the moment. The features that are there now are really what we need.
Overall, this is a good product and I recommend it.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
