What do I think about the stability of the solution?

AppDynamics is stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

AppDynamics' scalability is good.

How are customer service and support?

I didn't have a good experience with AppDynamics' technical support. Its knowledge base is locked up and unavailable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I also work with Zabbix, which has better education and hardware specification, though AppDynamics is more user-friendly.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was complex because we had to configure every agent and module, use a specific server for every module, and manage every visual and virtual machine.

What about the implementation team?

I used an outsourced company.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

AppDynamics is really pricey as it requires licenses for every feature.

What other advice do I have?

AppDynamics forces you to depend on the company to do what you want, which may be a negative if you prefer to work independently. I would rate AppDynamics as seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

user friendly, broad feature range, and stable
Pros and Cons
  • "AppDynamics has a very broad range of supported technologies, and it's user-friendly. It looks nice, and it's easy to sell the solution to the stakeholders when we can visualize how the website is working. For example, where we have any problems through visual analytics."
  • "The end-user experience is not really good because we can't catch all of the transactions. We only can catch the full stack of flow transactions, but I think that this is caused by the technology they use. If they will catch every transaction, it will cause a very big load on the performance of applications. The monitoring of all transactions needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

Our main use of this AppDynamics is to monitor customer applications, such as web applications. For example, to monitor the availability of online stores, and to figure out whether we have any problems.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using AppDynamics for approximately eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been stable in my experience.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. AppDynamics has been flexible enough for what I use it for.

How are customer service and support?

I have not contacted support. We have only used our local distributors, and they have been good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used an older version of Dynatrace previously.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is easy to deploy if you know what you are doing. It was simple for me.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of AppDynamics could be reduced in my region.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others that want to implement this solution is to have a test environment, and then go to production. Sometimes it requires tuning of the software and restarting services a couple of times,  it's better to make all of these changes on a test environment, and then to move to production.

I have been using AppDynamics for approximately eight out of ten.

A complete solution for monitoring but setting it up is a battle
Pros and Cons
  • "Once you get past installation, AppDynamics is highly stable and we get good results."
  • "Installation and configuration can be very tough. An average user without specialized knowledge can't do this. You need to have DevOps and QA teams handle it. During installation, a lot of customers get stuck trying to track the database or the API part, and they have to contact customer support."

What is most valuable?

AppDynamics is a complete tool for server and usability monitoring.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with AppDynamics for the past two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Once you get past installation, AppDynamics is highly stable and we get good results.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

AppDynamics is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

AppDynamics technical support is good.

How was the initial setup?

AppDynamics is easy to use overall, but the installation part is a battle. Installation and configuration can be very tough. An average user without specialized knowledge can't do this. You need to have DevOps and QA teams handle it. During installation, a lot of customers get stuck trying to track the database or the API part, and they have to contact customer support.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

AppDynamics is a bit costly for an APM tool. The cheapest is New Relic.
AppDynamics and Dynatrace are about the same.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I also use Dynatrace with some of my customers' companies. It's a much better product than AppDynamics in terms of features and ease of installation.

What other advice do I have?

I rate AppDynamics five out of 10.

Beneficial programming language for customization, powerful metric details, and reliable
Pros and Cons
  • "All the metrics are baselines in networks, infrastructure, application, and user experience. AppDynamics offers its own query language. It is called ADQL. You can write code of any kind to do queries and analysis and you can use those within the reporting or within other research."
  • "This feature needs to be properly described to a client, and then the client needs to have a use case. There are some clients which do not need it and some clients who do. It is not for everyone and is dependant on their use case."

What is our primary use case?

AppDynamics lets you monitor applications and databases and provide a unified view of your infrastructure. You are able to monitor a single point but this would not be useful and with this solution, you would not use it this way. You want to monitor how your application is impacted from the application perspective to the backend, through to the server infrastructure, database, hardware, network, and application labs. It is all able to be monitored by AppDynamics. It monitors all the aspects from the infrastructure up to the user, and the application.

What is most valuable?

All the metrics are baselines in networks, infrastructure, application, and user experience. AppDynamics offers its own query language. It is called ADQL. You can write code of any kind to do queries and analysis and you can use those within the reporting or other research. Additionally, together with everything which comes out of the box, you can create your own analytic views, analytic reports, and do a deep analysis of the environment. All the values or all the metrics which are gathered are quite powerful.

What needs improvement?

This feature needs to be properly described to a client, and then the client needs to have a use case. There are some clients which do not need it and some clients who do. It is not for everyone and is dependant on their use case.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using AppDynamics Application Analytics for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have done large deployments without any issues. It is scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

They provide detailed documentation for support.

What about the implementation team?

The installation has to be done by professionals. If the client wants to take control and do it themselves they will have to do a bit of training.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the solution is reasonable for what features you receive.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others. However, they have to make sure it fits their use case.

I rate AppDynamics Application Analytics a nine out of ten.

Easy to gain visibility, effective root cause discovery, and highly scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "It is easy to gain visibility into complex environments with AppDynamics. It has the ability to combine operation information of the environment and business information with strong business IQ support."
  • "The solution could improve by covering more technologies. For example, it does support .NET Core applications. However, it could be a bit better."

What is our primary use case?

We are using AppDynamics for application management.

What is most valuable?

It is easy to gain visibility into complex environments with AppDynamics. It has the ability to combine operation information of the environment and business information with strong business IQ support.

The solution makes it easy to find the root cause of the problems and provided the visualization of data. It is really simple, useful, and intuitive.

It enables integration with other systems very easily. It can monitor applications of different technologies as well as manage log files.

It has a lot of capabilities and the solution features function well overall.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve by covering more technologies. For example, it does support .NET Core applications. However, it could be a bit better. Additionally, there are some outdated technologies which are not covered out of the box with this solution, such as C++ which is old technology. They can be monitored but it takes a bit more effort. They have done a decent job but they could improve.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used AppDynamics for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is highly scalable. You can go from a small deployment into tens of thousands of nodes to monitor an application.

How are customer service and technical support?

We provide support for this solution. We are the biggest AppDynamics partner in Europe, we have approximately 60 experts.

We work closely with research and development. They are quite quick and flexible when it comes to helping and supporting. We are quite satisfied. When we come from the field directly, we do not need months or weeks to fix issues that we have found or to implement new features. They have been excellent.

How was the initial setup?

I am more in the pre-sales department, I am not that technical, but I do understand and know the basics. The installation difficulty depends on a variety of factors. it can be simple. Out of the box, it is already quite simple. However, there are tons of specifics that you need to know, but it is not overly difficult for typical environments. The software can add another layer of difficulty. Overall the difficulty is dependant on the environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For those who appreciate the value and had issues with the visibility of the performance of their applications, then the pricing is good. For somebody who does not need it, it can be pricey, but overall, it is worth the money which it costs.

What other advice do I have?

I rate AppDynamics a nine out of ten.

Easy to set up with good stability and an excellent technical support team
Pros and Cons
  • "We have found the scalability to be quite good."
  • "There may be some older technologies that are still covered, however, it's not as plug-and-play. You can still do it, however, it takes slightly more effort for engineers to cover old technologies such as C++, Delphi, and so on. It still can be done. It's just not as easy as, for example, covering Java."

What is our primary use case?

There are various use cases. For example, one of them can be for a mobile bank. Mobile banking is something that is being used more and more with customers. Based on the fact that the architecture of applications is being more and more complex and more and more distributed while having a deep view of what the user is experiencing on the mobile or on the browser. It's really valuable. This is true especially for a bank, as the user experience really explains or defines the services. You want the mobile bank to work quickly and you want it to be stable and you want to basically perform all the actions within seconds, not over 10 seconds for every action.

What is most valuable?

The solution is very stable.

Technical support is extremely fast and responsive.

We have found the scalability to be quite good.

The initial setup isn't difficult.

What needs improvement?

I'm not sure I know how I would improve the solution, as I'm mostly pre-sales and sales and I don't have any deep insight into the technical side that could be improved.

There needs to be the capability to modify the code for mobile.

There may be some older technologies that are still covered, however, it's not as plug-and-play. You can still do it, however, it takes slightly more effort for engineers to cover old technologies such as C++, Delphi, and so on. It still can be done. It's just not as easy as, for example, covering Java. Java is just a matter of configuration and clicks.

For how long have I used the solution?

I'm not sure precisely when I started using the product. it's likely been about two years or so. We started using it when AppDynamics released the feature.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is very good. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. We have very good technical support as well, and, if we run into issues, things are dealt with very quickly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is great. If a company needs to expand, it can do so.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have a really close relationship and technical support is really one of the best on the market. We've worked in the past with different vendors and they took months to get fixes or to get new features. In our case, support really took their responsibilities to another level. We get support in days for our clients - not months.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex or difficult. It's quite easy. That said, in many cases, there is no modification of the code. It cannot be done within the settings of the server. For mobile, that is something small to be included. Modifications need to be able to be made however, it's really not significant. There is no overhead in development, et cetera. It's really easy to use.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is always subjective. If somebody has a critical application without visibility, then for them, surely it's worth the money, as it provides a proactive approach. If your business depends on the revenue, which is generated online and with the application and service delivery, then you surely want to see it and, in that case, the cost may not be the main factor. I really can't say anything about the pricing. It's not cheap. However, it depends on the client. Many clients are using it and they have no issues with the price.

What other advice do I have?

The deployment model depends on the client and their desires. Some prefer a private cloud. Others use it as a service.

I would easily rate the solution at a nine out of ten. I removed a point simply due to the fact that I don't know everything. For me, everything is really good. All the feedback from clients, all the examples we show at sales and pre-sales are great.

Scalable, good performance monitoring, and excellent for enterprise-level organizations
Pros and Cons
  • "It's good for a larger scale deployment such as what my company is working on."
  • "The initial setup could be easier."

What is most valuable?

The product is good for the enterprise SAS application performance monitoring. It's good for a larger scale deployment such as what my company is working on.

The solution is scalable.

What needs improvement?

The solution is complex.

We'd like the solution to offer more AI features.

The initial setup could be easier.

They need to improve the infrastructure and make it less complex. There are too many modules and components.

It would be helpful if the product had local support in our area.

For how long have I used the solution?

We acquired the solution last year after we did a bit of research on its capabilities. We've been using it for a few months so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so. It's a good product for large-scale projects and enterprises.

How are customer service and technical support?

We don't have AppDynamics local support in my area. We only have a partner in my region, which is not really AppDynamics. In terms of the whole implementation, the experience, I wonder if the experience is good enough. I suspect a direct connection with AppDynamics might be better. If they had a product team in my region we might be better off.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not easy or straightforward. It's quite complex. You really need to have local support.

What other advice do I have?

We are just a customer and an end-user. We don't have a business relationship with AppDynamics.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten. We've been happy with its capabilities over the time we have used it.

I would recommend the solution, even with all of the complexity that it brings. However, I would advise new users or companies considering the product to make sure they have local support.

Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
