I mainly use AppDynamics to detect issues and bugs and monitor our enterprise database module.
IT Manager at a computer software company with 11-50 employees
Fast and responsive solution that can monitor multiple services
Pros and Cons
- "AppDynamics' most valuable features are the response time of the business transaction modules, the ability to monitor multiple services, and testing and developing environments."
- "AppDynamics's agent management could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
AppDynamics' most valuable features are the response time of the business transaction modules, the ability to monitor multiple services, and testing and developing environments.
What needs improvement?
AppDynamics's agent management could be improved. They could also manage their licenses by host count rather than CPU core counts and on independent container count instead of for five containers. In the next release, AppDynamics should include AI modules in the on-prem environment.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using AppDynamics for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?
AppDynamics is stable.
How was the initial setup?
Generally, the initial setup is easy, but it's harder for Java applications because you have to do some manual customization in agent configuration. Deployment took around a month.
What about the implementation team?
We used a partner team.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
AppDynamics' licensing scheme is confusing because all of its domains require different licenses. AppDynamics is priced on the higher side.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend AppDynamics to other users and would rate it eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Responsable Commercial at a tech services company with 1-10 employees
Customizable, simple to set up, and helps make code more effective
Pros and Cons
- "The initial setup is simple."
- "If AppDynamics could do a one-agent function with their actual monitoring effectiveness, it will be the greatest tool."
What is our primary use case?
We use this product for the public sector and for really big data centers and infrastructure.
How has it helped my organization?
We implemented it for a big bank in Morocco and it monitors all the web interface interfaces. It also monitors solutions like Salesforce, SAP, these kinds of solutions, and it describes the problem really from the root.
What is most valuable?
You can use one module for each server, for each application, and for each API.
It can monitor the income and the outcome. For example, when you have a website that has online payments, if there are bugs in the online payment for the provider, it will check it, see the problem, and send you an alert.
If the development team makes a mistake with this tool, it points really the mistake and sends it to the manager and it provides also a solution too, as it monitors the code. It provides solutions to make the code more effective.
The initial setup is simple.
With the solution you can put add-ons on it and it's very customizable. You can customize it easily. If you want something that the tool doesn't have, you can add it easily.
It is stable.
The solution can scale.
What needs improvement?
Compared to Dynatrace, which is the biggest competitor to AppDynamics, Dynatrace is a one-agent tool. You don't have to put an agent in every single server or app. However, the monitoring is less effective in Dynatrace. If AppDynamics could do a one-agent function with their actual monitoring effectiveness, it will be the greatest tool.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been dealing with the solution for two years now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable. It's reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product is scalable. 30% of our team uses the solution. They are IT experts and they are DevOps. You have to know how to code and you have to know how to deal with infrastructure servers, et cetera, and you have to know how to put KPIs and everything that the client needs into place.
I'm not sure if clients have any plans to increase usage at this time.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is very, very good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I'm also familiar with Dynatrace.
How was the initial setup?
The implementation is straightforward. There may be a bit of complexity here and there. You just have to buy the license with the number of agents that you want to install. It's more complex than the Dynatrace setup. It's complex in terms of the fact that you have to know the tool and you have to know how to code. If you want to customize it, you have to know development also, those parts can be very complex, or more complex than Dynatrace, for example.
The deployment takes from one to six months.
The implementation strategy is, first, we take notice of the entire IT infrastructure, the entire digital environment. When the audit is complete, then we proceed to the tool installation.
We have ten people that can handle deployment and maintenance tasks.
What about the implementation team?
Most of the implementation was handled in-house. We have a delivery center in Tunisia that can handle the setup. We provide assistance to our clients.
What was our ROI?
Clients have seen an ROI. For example, we had a client who had to troubleshoot a website and its banking application, and it was buggy all the time. It was not working. I was a client of this bank. Since we implemented this solution, it's been one of the best banking apps in Morocco.
They had great ROI in terms of client satisfaction. For the user, the banking administration processes are easier. You do everything on the app, which now works well.
The return on investment is huge.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The licensing is paid yearly. It depends on the size of the environment, and the number of apps or IT infrastructure that is monitored. It can cost from $30,000 to $500,000. Larger companies, like, for example, Facebook or Amazon, would likely one million dollars. It really depends on the size of the company.
There are some add-ons to put back robots that make tests on the website on something, to see if there is some risk, bugs, or whatever could damage the website.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We didn't evaluate other options.
What other advice do I have?
We're resellers.
We deal with various versions of the product. The on-premises deployment we had we stopped using a few months ago. Now, we only deal with SaaS deployments.
In this digital era, this tool is not nice to have, it's a must have. If a company works 100% on digital and they have websites to make SaaS solutions, everything which is on internet can be hacked, can have bugs, et cetera. This tool is really the tool that you must have to prevent this type of risk.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud

Senior Solutions Consultant at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
Provides a single pane of glass to see where you need to focus, and the information is clearly visible and easy to navigate
Pros and Cons
- "Knowing which tables on the database were working the most was valuable. It helped the client understand where they need to focus. They streamlined a lot of their queries and brought the resource usage down. It helped them to find long-running queries. They rewrote them completely so that they don't take as long and the application performs better."
- "The synthetic scripting for end-user monitoring could be a little bit broader. Instead of using just Python, they can include a few other languages so that not everyone has to jump on the bandwagon for Python and do Selenium scripting. They can open up that a bit to make it simpler for people to do the scripting."
What is our primary use case?
We're a partner and reseller for AppDynamics. We had a bank that we had to monitor from start to finish. We did the bank, and I then moved on to another product, but one of my mates is still busy working with AppDynamics.
Most of it was on-prem. We did some product testing on the cloud, but the client at that stage didn't have much on the cloud. Connecting to a cloud was quite simple as well.
What is most valuable?
Knowing which tables on the database were working the most was valuable. It helped the client understand where they need to focus. They streamlined a lot of their queries and brought the resource usage down. It helped them to find long-running queries. They rewrote them completely so that they don't take as long and the application performs better.
What needs improvement?
The synthetic scripting for end-user monitoring could be a little bit broader. Instead of using just Python, they can include a few other languages so that not everyone has to jump on the bandwagon for Python and do Selenium scripting. They can open up that a bit to make it simpler for people to do the scripting.
On the dashboarding side, it's very difficult to do dashboards on the database portion because they don't let you include a lot of the elements in dashboards. They should give a bit more functionality and add more views from the database side. Other than that, all the clients I've worked with are very happy with it. It had everything they needed. No one had any complaints. Only on the application portion, do people get very confused if they're not tech-savvy, but on the database side, you usually work with tech-savvy people. So, the database and the elements are great.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution since 2018 or so. It has been four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
If you got the on-prem resource, it's very easy to scale out. If you have the full server resources that you need, scalability is very easy.
In terms of its usage, within the bank, its adoption was very difficult. People didn't adopt it very well, but in one of the telecoms, the adoption rate was very good. They had a team of two to three people managing close to 150 users. It was very straightforward to manage.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have worked with an IBM solution previously. The main pro of AppDynamics Database Monitoring is user-friendliness. It was very easy to click around and say to the clients that this is what they need. It was all clearly visible and easy to navigate.
How was the initial setup?
On the database side, it was very straightforward. I don't have a lot of database experience, but installing it on them was straightforward. It just takes the information from the sites, manipulates it, runs it as a query, creates the user, and gives it permissions. It is very easy. The only one I struggled with was the IBM Db2 because the bank had very strict permissions to get around, and that wasn't as easy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It could be a bit lower, but looking at the scalability, functionality, and other things, you can understand why AppDynamics is so expensive as compared to some of the cheaper products that don't have that full single pane of glass they've got. Dynatrace has got three different elements that you need to log into just to get a full view, which is not so good, and because of that, it is a bit cheaper.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate it a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Head of IT Automation at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
Good real-time monitoring, reliable, and a wide variety of useful features
Pros and Cons
- "There are many features that are very valuable to us, but the ability to monitor the status of the users' experience in real-time is one of them."
- "I would like to see a better way to automate actions based on the events generated by the tool."
What is our primary use case?
AppDynamics Mobile Real-User Monitoring is an application performance management tool.
The platform itself is divided into different modules, each of which can be enhanced with additional modules. We work with End User Experience Monitoring, both server monitoring, and application performance monitoring.
AppDynamics Mobile Real-User Monitoring is used to monitor user experiences when evaluating and deploying applications for the company.
What is most valuable?
With Dynatrace, AppDynamics Mobile Real-User Monitoring is one of the best tools on the market.
There are many features that are very valuable to us, but the ability to monitor the status of the users' experience in real-time is one of them. I can see in almost real-time whether or not our users are having a positive experience when using our applications.
What needs improvement?
One of the things that we would like to improve a little more is the dashboards. The dashboards are good, but I believe that they could improve even more.
It would be helpful to have a better way of seeing the status of our applications and we can customize the information that is displayed a little bit more.
I would like to see a better way to automate actions based on the events generated by the tool.
For how long have I used the solution?
We moved our focus, and I'm now more working with Cisco AppDynamics. AppDynamics is a brand that was recently acquired by Cisco, but it continues to be known as AppDynamics.
I have been using AppDynamics Mobile Real-User Monitoring for six months.
We are using the latest version because it's SaaS.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of AppDynamics Mobile Real-User Monitoring is very good. It can handle a wide range of applications and traffic.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
AppDynamics Mobile Real-User Monitoring is scalable.
We have more than 20 people who are managing the application.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was completed before I joined the project.
We have a team of three people to maintain this solution, but it may not be enough.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is not free. It does require licensing to be paid.
What other advice do I have?
I recently joined and I am currently working as an external consultant for the team.
Because of the nature of the tool, the main piece of advice is to work in close contact with the developers of the applications that we are monitoring.
We are Cisco partners.
I am very pleased with this solution, but there is still room for improvement.
I would rate AppDynamics Mobile Real-User Monitoring a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Effective slow response identification, stable, and responsive support
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature in AppDynamics is the identifying of the slow responses. Additionally, it is easy to use."
What is our primary use case?
AppDynamics can be used for understanding where the bottlenecks are in your environment, and where your applications are struggling. For example, when you have major data collections, you can easily see in AppDynamics, when you have slow responses.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature in AppDynamics is the identifying of the slow responses. Additionally, it is easy to use.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using AppDynamics for approximately six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
AppDynamics is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalable of this solution is relative. I have an issue with the fact that when having a hundred servers, for instance, that's a hundred licenses. Sometimes, from a cost perspective, you might need to decide which 50 do you want to monitor, and not monitor.
We have approximately 5,000 using the solution.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support is great. After you have spent a certain amount with AppDynamics they provide you with dedicated support for your company.
How was the initial setup?
The installation was simple, and it took approximately one hour.
What about the implementation team?
The application owner can install it on their own if they follow the documentation.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There is an annual cost to use this solution. The licensing model could be improved by making it more cost-effective.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend this solution to others.
I rate AppDynamics a nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
