Solid endpoint security with zero-day vulnerability.
Pros and Cons
  • "The features that I have found most valuable are the endpoint security with the zero-day vulnerability. They have an on-premise sandboxing solution which prevents any of those zero-day vulnerability issues."
  • "The main thing they need to improve is their reporting functionality and the forensics for their on-premise consult. They do not have very good reporting features or forensic functionality in the on-premise version. They need to improve that."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the Trend Micro Apex One in two scenarios. One is for endpoint security and the other is for endpoint management. We are also using the restricting USB tool, taxes, and application control.

What is most valuable?

The features that I have found most valuable are the endpoint security with the zero-day vulnerability. They have an on-premise sandboxing solution which prevents any of those zero-day vulnerability issues.

What needs improvement?

The main thing they need to improve is their reporting functionality and the forensics for their on-premise consult. They do not have very good reporting features or forensic functionality in the on-premise version. They need to improve that. They have a cloud version called Trend Micro XDR. It has that functionality, but they do not have that kind of thing on the on-premise solution.

The things I would like to see improved in future releases are better price and support, and the reporting functionality in the on-premise solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One for a very long time. We are a long-term customer with Trend Micro - more than five years. We have the latest version of Trend Micro on-premise with EDR support.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable, that is why we are a long-term customer. Right?

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is scalable.

We have approximately 1,500 plus users using it and we require only two people to manage it.

In terms of increasing usage, that depends on the number of employees. We are marginally increasing this year by year. It all depends on the business bracket.

How are customer service and support?

Their support needs to be improved. We need to wait for a long time to get even a quick fix -  this needs to be addressed on the Trend Micro side. Their support is not as good as expected. The people are knowledgeable but they take a long time.

How was the initial setup?

I cannot tell you exactly if it was straightforward or not because it was very long back that we installed it. At that time we faced some issues because we needed to identify what was missing. Those kinds of issues were there, and slowly, we sorted that out.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented with a Trend Micro implementation partner.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Previously, we had the three years package. Now, we are just renewing every year.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Apex One to other people. But it is a little bit of a pricey product. If they are able to pay this costly price, then definitely, I can recommend it.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Trend Micro Apex One an eight.

Integrates well, stable, scalable, and has good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The main benefit is the threat intelligence network of Trend Micro."
  • "The DLP model needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution as our endpoint security solution.

What is most valuable?

We are very satisfied with Trend Micro products.

The main benefit is the threat intelligence network of Trend Micro. It is very good.

It checks all signatures to ensure they are the latest and most up-to-date with the latest vulnerabilities.

The threat intelligence network is very good in Trend Micro.

It integrates well with different products. We are currently using three or four different versions of this endpoint. We use it in the security sector, we use Deep Security and it is working very well.

What needs improvement?

The integration needs to be improved. We are using the IDLP models and DLP models.

When integrating we are having some issues with the customization of our DLP policies.

The DLP model needs improvement. When compared to other market DLP products it is not as strong.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Trend Micro Apex One since 2018. Prior to this, it was known as OfficeScan.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is quite stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable product.

We are an enterprise business with approximately 1300 endpoint users.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is fine. When we raised issues or complaints they would respond and resolve the issues in a timely fashion.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Earlier, I was working with OfficeScan, which was the previous brand.

We also use Trend Micro Endpoint, and Trend Micro Deep Discovery Inspector, and Deep Security.

I have been using Trend Micro Endpoint for the last five years.

With Trend Micro Deep Security and Trend Micro Apex One, the use cases are different. One is directly designed for server security and the other is for endpoint devices, which are mostly Windows 10 and Windows 8.

We are using Deep Security for our server and Apex One for our endpoints.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Trend Micro Apex One is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

From a commercial aspect, it is a bit higher compared to other market products.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One a nine out of ten.

An easy initial setup with good technical support and great security
Pros and Cons
  • "Technical support is quite knowledgeable and helpful."
  • "The solution could use signatureless detection."

What is our primary use case?

Trend Micro Apex One is a nine-point security solution from Trend Micro. We primarily use the solution for all of the scanning of our endpoint devices.

What is most valuable?

Trend Micro ensures the number of signatures is updated on time. If you have updated versions of signatures, they are built into the database quickly without wasting time.

If you don't update your database in real-time, the problem is there can be zero-day exploits. Hackers or malicious attacks might get through. Trend Micro in that sense is a very good product as it allows us to have access to the database all the time. The security is excellent. That is the most valuable aspect.

Technical support is quite knowledgeable and helpful.

What needs improvement?

The solution could use signatureless detection.

The EDR capabilities should be built into the solution. In my opinion, the native endpoint product should have the capability of EDR also. The product should be capable of actually building some behavior-based analytics so that it can actually detect signature lists.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about three months. However, I had been using a previous version of the solution, known as Office Scan, for the last two or three years or so.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

We currently have 2,000 users on the solution.

We intend to increase usage in the future.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've reached out to technical support in the past and we've always gotten the help we needed. We're satisfied with the level of support we receive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't previously use a different solution. We've always used Trend Micro.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex. It's pretty straightforward.

The deployment doesn't take much time, however, it depends on the size of the organization. It's very slow to deploy the product to multiple clients. If your organization has a 10,000 user base, sit will take longer than if you have a 2,000 user base. It just varies according to the number of machines to which it will actually be deployed.

We have about 2,000 users and we have a team of three or four people that handle maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

I am the security manager on the end solution security team in the organization. The deployment was actually done by the IT team within my team. We didn't need the assistance of consultants or integrators.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer.

On a scale from one to ten, I would rate this solution at a nine. It's been very good. We've been happy with the results so far.

Ease of deployment and focus on AI are key features for us
Pros and Cons
  • "The ease of deployment is one of its most valuable features."
  • "There is room for improvement in next-gen attacks protection."

What is our primary use case?

It's an antivirus solution for us.

How has it helped my organization?

It keeps us running very smoothly because there are no outages due to viruses. I think we have a very good security posture, and this product has helped us to get there.

We have also seen an increase in staff productivity because we manage the entire solution with just one person. Five years ago we needed a team of at least ten people.

What is most valuable?

The ease of deployment is one of its most valuable features.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see a data-loss prevention module. We need that in our organization.

There is also room for improvement in next-gen attacks protection.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very good. We have a centralized way in which we can see that the product is running.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have about 3,000 endpoints, and we haven't had any problems with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

We work with a partner. We have been working with them for about five years and it's very good. We haven't had any problems.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We went with this solution because they have a really huge investment in artificial intelligence; not only in attack signatures but also behaviors.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. It was only a matter of sending it to the console and it took care of the job for us.

What about the implementation team?

We deployed it ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

On a yearly basis, it's about $50,000. There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are currently evaluating next-gen antivirus because of the new attacks that are happening. The shortlist is Silence, Carbon Black, and CrowdStrike.

What other advice do I have?

Focus on the productivity gains that you will have. We don't have a lot of security experts in the company. We are a very small team, so we need to be very productive with the products that we have.

I would rate this product at nine out of ten. It has a lot of the capabilities that we need.

Feature-rich, easy to install, has good performance and good support
Pros and Cons
  • "Trend Micro Apex One has good features and is lightweight."
  • "They could improve the integration with Active Directory."

What is our primary use case?

We have 1,000 machines or endpoints that we need to protect. We use Apex One to protect them.

What is most valuable?

Trend Micro Apex One has good features and is lightweight.

It has good performance.

When I compare it with other solutions, it's good. There are no other features that I haven't been able to find.

What needs improvement?

There are some things that could make Trend Micro Apex One better.

They could improve the integration with Active Directory.

As Apex One has its own structure it is very difficult to click on files. Once integrated, it can import the OE structure of the Active Directory. It will make it very easy to click on files and get back to control.

We also use the device control, which is host named. I have to either lock or allow a hostname. By default, it is locked. For example, USB access and drive access will be blocked in the organization. If you need to allow some endpoints, we have to allow that particular hostname. Now anybody can log in to that host and use that USB access, but it should be user-based.

I would suggest that Trend Micro Web Proxy, TMWS a proxy solution that has a separate function integrate into one single agent.

Currently, you have one endpoint with one agent for the anti-malware DLP and another agent, for the proxy. If they could integrate both into a single agent. That would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using OfficeScan for the last six years.

Apex One was previously OfficeScan.

We are using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, the product is good. I don't have any issues with the stability of Trend Micro Apex One.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have contacted technical support several times.

Technical support is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Earlier I was using McAfee and changed to Trend Micro Apex One. McAfee was also very good but Trend Micro provides more features and is more lightweight.

We are in the process of implementing XDR.

How was the initial setup?

The installation process was not much of a challenge.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Trend Micro has very aggressive pricing, but it is also very good. It is one of the reasons we chose to use Trend Micro.

What other advice do I have?

If you are looking to use this solution, I would definitely recommend it, especially if you are not satisfied with the solution that you are currently using.

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One a nine out of ten.

Very stable and scalable; it's on the cloud so it's very easy to deploy and use
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is stable and scalable."
  • "The solution could use extra dashboards and offer more analytics."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for protecting the computers from viruses.

What is most valuable?

This product is stable and scalable; it's on the cloud so it's very easy to use.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see extra dashboards and more analytics.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for about eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy, I deployed myself together with an assistant and I estimate it took us around 10 minutes per computer. We probably have around 150 users.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay the license on a quarterly basis - sometimes we need to review a few details.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a 10 out of 10.

From a technology point of view, it is very simple to install and it's not heavy on the endpoints in terms of the amount of processing cycles
Pros and Cons
  • "From a technology point of view, it is very simple to install, it's not heavy on the endpoint in terms of the amount of processing cycles. It is simple to deploy and the interfaces are easy. You don't need to be a scientist to operate it."
  • "I think the one place where we like where they lacking is in a unified style dashboard."

What is our primary use case?

Our business is what you would call national key infrastructure so if anything happens to our business we will have a major economic impact for Africa. From that point of view, we cannot afford for anything to go wrong with our endpoints networks. Our primary use case is to have a best of breed endpoint response rate.

What is most valuable?

From a technology point of view, it is very simple to install, it's not heavy on the endpoint in terms of the amount of processing cycles. It is simple to deploy and the interfaces are easy. You don't need to be a scientist to operate it.

Then the other things that are really just as important as the technology like the people behind it. When you look at it from a support perspective, the Trend Micro people are exceptionally passionate about their business and their products. That translates into phenomenal service that you get, which I haven't experienced with any of the other vendors at this point in time.

What needs improvement?

I think the one place where we like where they lacking is in a unified style dashboard. We've got multiple reporting in all the various components, but they need something to tie all of it together. There's deep discovery, deep security, and we've got a lot of different layers, and then we need something to tie all of this back together from an MIS point of view. I think that's the one place Trend Micro can spend a little bit more time on. But operationally, it's phenomenal.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is phenomenal. We started looking at things like Apex One in the cloud and it's amazing when we're looking at it from a commercial perspective, it makes a lot of sense and because you don't have to rely on maximum infrastructure in terms of your service and distribution boxes and all these other things that you traditionally would have. From that point of view as it's chalk and cheese against the competitors. Also, the organization's willingness to partner with you- it's not just somebody coming to do a sale, it's like a family and they actually mean it.

How are customer service and technical support?

They provide me a SOC service on the backend. We partnered locally with Trend SA and that's one of the major reasons why the product is phenomenal is because of the technical support.

I can pick up the phone and I can phone the global CEO of the organization. That's the level of commitment that Trend Micro put into their products versus Symantec, Kaspersky or McAfee.

How was the initial setup?

When you started doing some of the advanced things, it becomes a bit more complex when you start running the mobile device management and we're doing Apple enrollment because Apple is so difficult for the enrollment features. So when you're doing stuff like that and you're running it across the internet, that's got a fair bit of configuration that you need to know. Partnering becomes equally as important as the tool. With the right partners.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price point is exceptionally competitive. And I find that in most cases it's actually better than the competition. When you start looking at everything that you're getting and you're lumping all of the stuff together, it is exceptionally competitive. It is not a cheap solution so if you want cheap, then you go with another solution. But from a corporate perspective, I think they are exceptionally reasonably priced. So much so that I think the displacing of the technology is going to be detrimental to any business because you're going to end up buying a much more inferior product.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Trend Micro a ten out of ten.

The only thing that I would be presumptuous enough to tell Trend Micro they need to improve is that they need to have a bold interface for a C level executive so that they can look at a screen and see the holistic picture of what the state is giving them.

Offers good protection, and has a wide variety of features
Pros and Cons
  • "They have a wide range of products, including a couple for virtual patching, which is very important."
  • "I would like to see the initial setup simplified to make it less complicated, and the price reduced."

What is our primary use case?

We use Trend Micro Apex One for endpoint scanning.

What is most valuable?

They have a wide range of products, including a couple for virtual patching, which is very important. They also have, cloud-based sandboxing options.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the initial setup simplified to make it less complicated, and the price reduced.

Normally, I've seen the price of any antivirus for the first year where they will give you a free price comparison and a discount of 30%, 40%, but the second year, after renewal, they'll give you the normal standard list price.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Trend Micro Apex One for more than three years.

We work with on-premises solutions. There is no option for cloud solutions by default.

We are using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Trend Micro Apex One is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have a very small network of 152, and I expect it to be scalable. People are using it at 3,000. You go as you need more.

We had 140 to 170 or 200 users, but have had to cut back due to the pandemic. It's now between 140 and 150.

We intend to increase our usage by another ten or fifteen percent in the future.

How are customer service and support?

There will always be problems to fix, but once it's stable, it's stable. For the first three months, there is always the fixing of problems and getting updates.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am also working with Symantec Endpoint Security. I started using Trend Micro Apex One because Symantec was acquired by another company, and I was looking for a change.

How was the initial setup?

It is not as simple as it appears, but there are numerous options available. They include mobile security, as well as many other features. So you'll need some tricky options such as the use of servers and other such things. It isn't as straightforward as Symantec.

When I use Symantec, it's simple, but Trend Micro has a lot of features, such as DLP, security, cloud sandboxing, and more. It requires the use of three or four servers.

The initial setup and consult will take one or two days, but the deployment for the branches will take five to seven days. In total it can take up to 20 days to move the package.

We have a technical team of two administrators who maintain this solution,

What about the implementation team?

We completed the implementation ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is very high in comparison to EDR, XDR, and MDR. The pricing is quite high.

When compared to Symantec, Kaspersky, and others the price is higher, they are more expensive.

It is possible that it is more expensive because they only provide the solution on-premises.

Licensing fees can be paid yearly or with an option for three years.

We have a three-year perpetual license that is set to expire in May. We are considering renewing the license or exploring other market options.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

My three-year contract expires in May, and I am just looking into other endpoint and EDR solutions.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others.

I would rate Trend Micro Apex One an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
