What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We haven't had any issues. The solution always runs well, even during some hardware failures.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is very scalable overall. However, the time to deploy isn't very quick, so if you need a large expansion, you must plan and project it with some time in advance. My company has 2000 users.
How are customer service and support?
Dell support is quick and assertive in addressing our needs. The Dell EMC team, particularly those supporting storage and standard systems, is very professional and productive. We have some assets with Dell ProSupport Plus, and they proactively help us predict failures, apply updates, and provide excellent support overall.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The solution's deployment is very easy. The major cause of delayed deployments usually comes from our internal processes rather than from Dell's side. Dell is always ready to deploy the equipment promptly.
On a scale from one to ten, I'd rate it a six in terms of ease of maintenance. It's not very simple to maintain because of the many integrated components, which add some complexity. However, overall, it is manageable and affordable.
What was our ROI?
VxRail has brought value to our environment. It has been running for about four years and performed very well. All of our users need to connect to the infrastructure to do their jobs, and throughout the product's lifecycle, we haven't experienced any problems. The solution has always operated well.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
VxRail does raise the price, but overall, it's well-priced. It's not more expensive than other similar solutions. If you were to create an in-house, tailor-made solution, you could potentially do it at a lower cost. However, I think a fully integrated solution like VxRail should be priced appropriately.
What other advice do I have?
We plan to change our line of business infrastructure, which is currently based on traditional servers and central storage. However, we are also considering other options in the market.
I rate the overall product an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Trouble-free architecture, we don't have to juggle multiple components like in a traditional three-tier architecture
Pros and Cons
- "VxRail's integration with VMware environments is very good. Our VxRail is built on VMware, and the integration is seamless. We haven't faced any challenges. We can migrate VMs between servers in real-time and replicate them to our DR site without any problems."
- "It can be a bit complex for engineers who are new to it. There's a learning curve involved. They have to learn to operate it."
What is our primary use case?
We mainly use it for virtualization across all our applications. We also have a DC/DR setup based on the VxRail infrastructure.
How has it helped my organization?
It's a trouble-free architecture. We don't have to juggle multiple components like in a traditional three-tier architecture. With VxRail, it's a pre-built solution offering high performance, availability, and more.
What is most valuable?
I like the caching mechanism. Frequently used data is stored, so it definitely improves performance.
VxRail's integration with VMware environments is very good. Our VxRail is built on VMware, and the integration is seamless. We haven't faced any challenges. We can migrate VMs between servers in real-time and replicate them to our DR site without any problems.
What needs improvement?
It can be a bit complex for engineers who are new to it. There's a learning curve involved. They have to learn to operate it.
Moreover, encryption at the OS level isn't available. We'd like to have that feature in future releases.
For how long have I used the solution?
It's a good product. I have been using it for five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I didn't experience any performance issues or stability problems with VxRail.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a scalable solution.
We've upgraded two or three times – memory, storage, and even added nodes. Currently, we have eight nodes (our requirement), but it can scale up to 92, which is more than sufficient for most organizations.
So, VxRail's scalability impacted our capacity planning and future IT infrastructure expansion.
How are customer service and support?
There have been some issues, but Dell and VMware resolved them.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also use Microsoft Azure Stack HCI, but it's not as mature as VxRail.
Features like Kubernetes and Docker aren't currently available. That's something we're missing.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is neither too easy nor too difficult. There are two components: the network setup and the VMware setup.
The deployment took two days. Two resources were involved in the process. One engineer handles the maintenance.
What was our ROI?
Previously, with our three-tier architecture, a single server failure meant manual backups and restores. VxRail has increased application uptime significantly, and that directly translates to better ROI. For us, less downtime of applications equals ROI.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost was cheaper compared to other virtualization solutions. Since VMware was acquired by Broadcom, it's become more costly.
What other advice do I have?
It's a good, reliable, and mature product in the HCI space. So, I would recommend using it.
With HCI, one advantage is that we don't have to worry about single points of failure, whether it's a node or storage. VxRail provides high availability and load balancing, which are great benefits.
Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Sr. Infrastructure Engineer at CSL Behring
An entire datacenter in one box
Pros and Cons
- "VxRail does not require fiber switches or external storage. It's easy to replace and manage. It's centralized management through VxRail Manager."
- "Sometimes during the upgrade process of VxRail, we experience errors that have nothing to do with reality and I cannot troubleshoot them without calling Dell and bringing in an engineer to figure it out."
What is our primary use case?
The big portion of it is the VDIs, XenDesktop VDIs. I would say that our biggest deployment for VDI is approximately 15,000 users.
Our team actually maintains the solution and deploys the updates, etc. We have two people that handle all maintenance-related issues. Mostly me but I have support from another person.
What is most valuable?
VxRail does not require fiber switches or external storage. It's easy to replace and manage. It's centralized management through VxRail Manager.
What needs improvement?
The upgrade process is still not finished up. Sometimes during the upgrade process of VxRail, we experience errors that have nothing to do with reality and I cannot troubleshoot them without calling Dell and bringing in an engineer to figure it out.
If the VxRail upgrade fails on one of the particular nodes in the cluster, it doesn't stop, It pauses. When a problem's fixed and you retry it, it starts from the beginning.
For example, If I have 32 nodes in a cluster and I have a problem with the 31st node, I have to start from node 1 to check everything. To get to node 31, it takes up to three hours.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using VxRail for three and a half years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Stability is not related to VxRail. It's related to vSAN. Because VxRail has nothing to do with vSAN. VxRail's just aiding automation and the orchestration processes to vSAN, the VMware vSAN. Overall, the stability is pretty good if the hardware is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is 10 out of 10. I can add or remove hosts at any time. I have no problem with that.
How are customer service and technical support?
I'm really pleased with the technical support because it's centralized. It's not just VxRail support, it's hardware support and vSAN support, VMware support. If I call Dell for any problems relating to VxRail, I don't have to call anybody else.
In any case, if we need VMware engineers, it's just a matter of internally bringing somebody on the call, and then we figure it out together.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward. As soon as I prepare a JSON file I have no problem.
Usually deployment depends on the number of nodes — it's taken up to two hours.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I was not involved in the licensing of this solution.
What other advice do I have?
If you're interested in using VxRail, use your judgment. There are multiple solutions and all of them are geared toward different use cases. Some people will prefer HyperFlex, others will prefer to go with Nutanix, VxRail, or, for god's sake, vSAN ReadyNodes.
VxRail has some limitations. For me, it's limited from doing what it's supposed to do because it's provided by VxRail — it's automated and orchestrated by VxRail. For example, I cannot use VMware Update Manager. I have to use a bundle, which is produced by Dell, and usually, they are at least a month to a month and a half behind VMware.
Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give VxRail a rating of eight.

Technical Solution Architect at HCL Technologies
Offers zero-day deployment along with excellent lifecycle management and monitoring features
Pros and Cons
- "Offers zero-day deployment"
- "Lifecycle management (LCM) should be enhanced"
What is our primary use case?
At our company, we work as consultants and offer the VxRail environment to our customers. Sometimes, we work on small remote sites where we propose and escalate a few hosts, like two or three-node blasters. Otherwise, our company uses the solution for handling native HCI capability without VCF.
What is most valuable?
One of the solution's most valuable features is its zero-day deployment. The deployment is extremely fast, which our company's customers find very interesting. The lifecycle management feature makes the VxRail environment function quicker than other traditional, discreet environments.
For daily operations, VxRail has a great direct monitoring feature. The solution also offers seamless support to track issues through ESRS premises.
What needs improvement?
At our company, when we manage the lifecycle for upgrading from one version to another, sometimes the upgrade gets stuck or the solution doesn't support online upgrades and compatibility.
The solution's lifecycle management (LCM) should be enhanced. Multiple issues arise when dealing with the LCM feature on hand. The VMware feature can be included in the solution's software layer. Like Nutanix, VxRail should bring some competitive features like inbuilt DR capabilities and cloud hosting.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
VxRail provides an easy-to-scale environment. However, there are some limitations when the product is considered from the VMware perspective. The feature of HCI mesh functioning with Dell EMC VxRail further helps manage the compute-only nodes when needed. At our company, we never faced any challenges while scaling the VxRail environment.
How are customer service and support?
At our company, whenever we face a challenge or issue with VxRail, we easily resolve it by contacting customer support. Immediate support is available from Dell for any hardware issues. But in some instances, for virtualization issues, there is some dependency on VMware, which leads to a delay in support.
At our company, we believe VxRail support is proactive and their response metrics are smoother than Nutanix's. I would rate VxRail's customer support an eight out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The product offers easy and fast deployment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The hardware cost associated with the tool usage is a bit high. But when a user has been using VxRail for three to five years, the overall hardware cost reduces due to a reduction in orchestration cost. When we compare the CapEx and OpEx costs of VxRail together, they are always lower than those of another type of rack server adoption.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
At our company, we also work with Nutanix. Some of our customers prefer to adopt Nutanix for a few special use cases. Nutanix's performance and underlying operations are sometimes better than VxRail's. But personally, as a tech architect, I would say VxRail is better than Nutanix in terms of daily operations.
For some technical issues, reaching out to Nutanix support is difficult, whereas similar issues can be easily resolved by reaching out to VxRail support. Troubleshooting articles are not easily available with Nutanix. From the disaster recovery perspective, when a user adopts the Dell EMC VxRail, some dependency on third-party tools like SRM and Hyper-V is required. For Nutanix, a user does not need to bear the cost of external tools as Nutanix holds internal DR capabilities.
Nutanix also offers its own public cloud, where the tool can be used with AWS or Azure to develop a hybrid cloud environment. But VxRail has only an on-prem offering that can be used for discrete HTC and VCF environment operations.
What other advice do I have?
Users are usually very comfortable executing the workload of data center operations on VxRail. But when a user has to manage heavy workloads for storage, such as HeavyDB and database servers, they prefer to use external storage facilities to gain the maximum benefits of the computed nodes.
At our company, one of the customers is leveraging around 8,000 servers of VxRail, out of which 50% is native VxRail without VCF, and the rest of ESXi is utilized with VCF. The solution has also helped our company's customers grow their businesses.
The monitoring tool of VxRail helps improve efficiency. The tool easily integrates with VMware, vSphere and other logging tools. VxRail also allows hardware monitoring and tools within the Dell EMC VxRail are presented as a plugin within the vCenter. Any monitoring executed for hardware failure environment can be easily managed through the operations tool. VxRail also effortlessly integrates with ITSM tools.
Due to the automation features, cluster scalability, and number of operational days of the tool, VxRail is able to reduce 30-40% of our company's operational costs. Our company's customers' preferences vary depending on factors like quality, cost, and features, choosing VxRail or another competitive solution. Overall, I would rate VxRail an eight out of ten.

The tool is expensive. The affordability depends on our requirements. We chose the product because it was comparatively cheaper than other products and provided the required reliability.
What other advice do I have?
At the moment, we cannot scale the solution. It is in our five-year plan. We are underutilizing the product. The system is normally run on VMware. VMware’s support was built-in. VMware has been acquired by Broadcom. Overall, I rate the tool an eight out of ten.
Disclosure: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.
Reliable solution with easy setup and VMware compatibility
Pros and Cons
- "This solution ensures uptime, providing 100% availability so servers can operate without downtime. It works with VMware on the software side. The solution also has AI capabilities. The solution is stable. The solution is scalable. Customer service and support is more than satisfactory. It is easy to deploy. It can be done within a couple of hours. Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten."
- "During upgrades, some aspects get broken, requiring us to follow up with the VMware team to fix them."
How has it helped my organization?
When it comes to our infrastructure, VxRail has been performing well for the last three years. I also worked with a client who uses the solution in their setup.
What is most valuable?
Based on our requirements in the VxRail environment, we can increase or decrease the resources as needed, without needing to reconfigure every server at a specific time. This solution ensures uptime, providing 100% availability so servers can operate without downtime.
The solution works with VMware on the software side. It's an integrated EMS product with hardware provided as a bundle by Broadcom. Unlike Nutanix, which focuses solely on HCI, VxRail includes VMware software, offering a complete solution without the need to choose operating systems like Windows or Linux separately. The solution also has AI capabilities.
What needs improvement?
It has a good interface. However, during upgrades, some aspects get broken, requiring us to follow up with the VMware team to fix them. It's not a major issue though.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for more than four years. Currently, I’m using version 7.0.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable; its performance depends on the load you put on the cluster. It should work perfectly if you allocate resources—such as memory and storage.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable.
How are customer service and support?
It is more than satisfactory, it is really good because they always respond to emails and issues immediately. They don't take their own sweet time, especially during critical times.
How was the initial setup?
It is easy to deploy. It can be done within a couple of hours. However, the deployment time depends on the number of nodes. In a low-node-count scenario, we can deploy it in three to four hours. One person is sufficient for deployment. There are two aspects to deployment: hardware and software. Stacking alone takes time as it involves installing equipment in the rack, which takes a couple of hours to complete properly. After stacking, another couple of hours are needed to configure all nodes into a cluster.
We have a single deployment package we can upload and proceed with. It automatically applies the package to each node by putting them in maintenance mode, which makes it very easy. I have not faced any issues with this process, including with my clients.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is on the higher end of the price range compared to Cisco and Nutanix.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Based on my direct usage of the solution, I find Dell more mature in product maturity than Nutanix and Cisco. However, I rate Nutanix as a close second, considering Cisco's relatively late entry into the visualization market. I must mention that I cannot accurately rate these products since I have not used them. This assessment is based on my research and understanding; my opinion might change if I gain direct experience with the products.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten.

Easy to deploy and manage with helpful support
Pros and Cons
- "The ease of deployment and management of the solution are the most valuable aspects of the product."
- "I would like to see more solutions for satellite capabilities where we can put it into smaller locations and still have the redundancy that we have with a larger cluster."
What is our primary use case?
For our stores, we primarily use the solution for what's called edge computing to provide all the data processing needs in our stores.
How has it helped my organization?
The product allows us to have the capacity for the future to be able to add applications to help us better serve our customers.
We've seen reductions in cost by being able to reduce the amount of staff who needs to support the application. We've reduced staff by about 20%. It's enabled us to roll out applications that help us provide better customer service to our customers.
What is most valuable?
The ease of deployment and management of the solution are the most valuable aspects of the product. It's important due to the fact that, with 1800 stores, we can't afford to have an extensive staff to manage it.
What needs improvement?
We'd like to see improvements in the supply chain. We're evaluating that for the future.
I would like to see more solutions for satellite capabilities where we can put it into smaller locations and still have the redundancy that we have with a larger cluster.
For how long have I used the solution?
We implemented the first solution in February 2019.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It's stable. I would rate it ten out of ten for stability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We've now implemented it across our store network. We'll have 1800 stores on the VxRail by the end of October.
We have more capacity than we need. The reason we selected the product is that it is scalable. We can add additional components when needed. We haven't had to, however, it's available if we need to.
At this point, we've adopted the solution 100% across our organization.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support overall is excellent. It was a seamless process. We were very successful in the implementation.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used a three-tier architecture that we replaced with this product. It was the end of life and didn't have the capacity we needed to provide to our source.
How was the initial setup?
I was involved in the deployment of VxRail. The whole process was straightforward.
In terms of deployment, we did the first 600 stores in three months, and we now are doing 1200 stores and we'll be done by October. We worked together with Dell. We had a cross-functional team and we started slow and then built up to peak volume. Our strategy was to make sure we didn't disrupt any location.
About four or five people on our side were involved in the implementation. Dell assisted us and I don't know how many Dell had. Obviously, they needed people to go to every store to implement.
Our job was to act in coordination and communication with the locations where it was being deployed.
The solution does require maintenance, however, it's very easy since there are tools that are provided with the technology. About five people are involved with administration and maintenance. They address any predictive alerts that come out on failures and care and feed any additional firmware or other types of updates that are required.
What about the implementation team?
We used the Dell Technologies services to help us with the deployment and that went very well.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is fair. It's combined with the hardware and the VMware technology to run it as well. It's bundled.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated Nutanix and HPE. Dell has the largest market share, however, and it's the most mature of the other providers.
What other advice do I have?
This solution is on-premises in our data centers and also in our stores.
My advice to others would be to look strongly at the hyper-converged infrastructure technologies that come with it. It virtualizes a lot of the functions that were previously separate. It brings it together in one easy-to-manage solution.
I'd rate the product ten out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Team Lead of Senior Directors at Net-International
Provides integration with major products and monitoring capabilities
What is our primary use case?
VxRail is a suitable solution where more transactions are required and the TPMs exceed the standard requirements. For example, we have sold VxRail to a government weather company. This company runs extensive simulations to predict upcoming weather, analyzes images, and employs AI for analytics. These tasks demand significant computing power. Considering the budget, they need solutions that offer this level of performance. Typically, banking, education, and manufacturing customers opt for VxRail servers.
What is most valuable?
VxRail integration with multiple products is among the best key points for selling to any end customer.
The main feature of VxRail is its integration. VxRail integrates with almost all major products. Another key feature is its monitoring capabilities. VxRail provides detailed monitoring from the application level, making it easy to troubleshoot issues. Additionally, their CloudIQ software suggests best practices automatically. For instance, if you are taking snapshot backups on VxRail, CloudIQ will inform you in advance if there are any issues. For example, if you planned to take ten snapshots in one day but only eight were successful due to a receiver issue, CloudIQ will help you identify the problem and suggest best practices to resolve it. It provides comprehensive data and information without consulting different websites or people.
What needs improvement?
The solution is expensive.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using VxRail for ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is excellent.
I rate the solution’s stability a nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
You can have over 64 nodes in one cluster. It's plug-and-play. You just need to add the load to the cluster.
It is suitable for telcos and enterprises. If you have a university with two hundred campuses, then it is not recommended for them.It is the best solution for one of the departments, such as the electronics or business departments, that are running simulations.
I rate the solution’s scalability a ten out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
Support is wonderful. You email them, and they come to Webex and take the session.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
The price of VxRail is a bit higher. However, they focus on general specifications when selecting products in the environment sector.
When we compare VxRail with Cisco HyperFlex, Lenovo, Nutanix, and HP, we find it to be more cost-effective. Additionally, VxRail offers integrated backup and application support. In contrast, HP often lacks application support and relies on third-party solutions like Veeam or NetBackup. This can sometimes cause issues with smaller or in-house applications that may not be compatible with these backup solutions, leading to problems. On the other hand, if we decide to go with VxRail, they provide Avamar and NetWorker. Additionally, we can integrate it with a dedicated domain if we want to use separate storage.
How was the initial setup?
When providing VxRail solutions to customers, they bring their own system engineers or system administrators with one or two years of experience in servers and VMware. We do not just hand over the hardware as a simple plug-and-play solution. Instead, we provide a comprehensive solution that requires some level of expertise. Ideally, the person should have two to three years of experience in VMware and server administration.
For instance, a six-node installation can be completed in two hours, given the proper preparation. The system doesn't work automatically for the engineer; they need to be proactive. It is crucial to prepare around four or five key points before deployment. This proactive preparation ensures a smoother installation and deployment process. This is one of the strong points of VxRail solutions.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
VxRail competes with Cisco HyperFlex, HPE SimpliVity, and other major players in the HCI market. Locally, there is limited market penetration, which keeps them relatively safe. Apart from Dell EMC's VxRail, other significant providers include HPE with SimpliVity, Lenovo with Nutanix, and Cisco with HyperFlex.
What other advice do I have?
We have repeatedly asked the R&D team about external storage and how we can improve it for CI. Previously, there was an issue with FCI traffic, which was not supported. However, it is now supported on FCI with external storage.
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
