We use the solution to host virtual machines or servers. We host Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other application servers.

Easy to manage, easy to maintain, and provides a good return on investment
Pros and Cons
- "When we have a resource contention, we can easily increase the capacity."
- "The UI could be a little more informative."
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
We have automated the build of the VMs. We have automated the complete process. If users need a VM, they go to a portal and fill out a form. The automation takes the details and builds a VM for them. Keeping it virtualized on VxRail makes the VM adaptive to scaling. When we have a resource contention, we can easily increase the capacity. It is a valuable aspect for us.
What is most valuable?
We don't want some of our applications on the public cloud. We want to keep them on-premise in our environment for various security and compliance reasons. VxRail gives us the flexibility that we usually get on the cloud. We can scale as per the demand with a quick turnaround. Once we get familiar with the tool, it is pretty easy to manage and build. The tool is easy to manage and easy to maintain. It provides amazing support and a good return on investment.
What needs improvement?
The product comes with a certain number of nodes. It is an underlying cluster. If I run a 4-node VxRail cluster, I need to add at least two more nodes to extend the cluster. If I want a certain amount of clusters and add only one node, I do not have the flexibility to do it. The product must provide more flexibility in adding nodes. The UI could be a little more informative.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been reselling the solution to my clients for almost three to four years. I am working with the latest version.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is amazing.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of the product is the biggest selling point. We have 15,000 users in our organization. They use the applications that are running in the VxRail environment. We have many more customers using the tool. We have plans to increase the number of users. The scalability is a bit rigid, though.
How are customer service and support?
The support is amazing if we get premium Dell support. The support is very good, especially in the South Central regions of the USA. We got Dell to come on-site to rack and stack our VxRail. The initial configuration and the management of the support have been excellent.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The setup is pretty straightforward. It is not complicated. There are specifications of what is required. We have to be ready with our architecture and how we want to design our cluster after the hardware setup. Once the architecture is ready, it is pretty straightforward to implement it in a VxRail environment. The maintenance is not complex. Virtual networking needs a bit of skill to manage. If we have the right resources, it is easily manageable and maintainable.
What about the implementation team?
Dell professionals did the deployment and setup.
What was our ROI?
VxRail is the best solution in the industry if we want to host things internally in our environment and for applications that are not ready to go to the cloud yet.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We get special pricing since we are partners.
What other advice do I have?
We are partners and resellers. Organizations that want to invest in the solution must investigate which applications are needed and which are not. If we don't make that decision correctly with the required data points, we will go into the cloud and get stuck with a lack of security. Once the user does the research properly, the best option for keeping their things on-premise with a decent cost and return on investment is VxRail. Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Movement of devices is easy, but the support is a bit unsatisfactory
Pros and Cons
- "It is very powerful. We find that to be the most valuable aspect. The movement of devices between nodes is very easy."
- "The agility of the support team to provide you with better solutions should be improved. VxRail also has to be improved in terms of simplicity. Adding a simple node seemed like quite a project."
What is our primary use case?
We run the applications on VxRail. We run all the applications that we have virtualized through VxRail.
By implementing VxRail, we wanted hyperconvergence.
How has it helped my organization?
We are a little unhappy with the last five nodes that we have bought because we have had them for less than one year, but the power supply already burned out, and three network cards from three different nodes had to be changed. With the other seven nodes, we were more or less happy because the only failure they had was the CMOS battery. There were some small issues, but with these last ones, we are a little dissatisfied.
Their support team is always very willing to help, but in the end, we are not 100% satisfied. To give you an idea, we have, for example, four support cases open for which we still do not know what the solution is. One of the cases is that we have a cabin through a Unity node, which is also Dell’s, but the other nodes have zero visibility with the cabin. The only solution that we have been told is to eliminate or clean all the network units that are placed there, which is a drastic solution involving the loss of service, so we are a little dissatisfied with that solution. Their support is very receptive. Our customers try to quickly raise the incident, and we try to open the cases quickly as well. To be fair, someone from the support team contacts you quickly, but it takes too long for them to find the solution. For this reason, we are a little dissatisfied.
VxRail has the ability to consolidate infrastructure from multiple locations. It is a fundamental part. Especially for geographical redundancy, it is furthermore necessary and mandatory.
In terms of VxRail’s ability to simplify our management of VMware, simplifying VMware management is impossible.
VxRail consumes a lot of energy. The rack we have has seven nodes and then it has a cabin and more features. In the end, it consumes a lot of energy, but it is normal. They are working 24/7 after all.
When it comes to reduction in unplanned production downtime, because we have seven redundant nodes, it is hard to know if VxRail is helping to reduce unplanned production downtime. If we had only one or two nodes, the experience would be different because then the node would have been active 24/7, but this is not the case. Because we have seven nodes, we have everything redundant.
At the moment, VxRail has not had any effect on the flexibility of our operations or business. VxRail has also not had any impact on our organization’s sustainability goals because we do not have any sustainability goals.
What is most valuable?
It is very powerful. We find that to be the most valuable aspect. The movement of devices between nodes is very easy.
What needs improvement?
The agility of the support team to provide you with better solutions should be improved. VxRail also has to be improved in terms of simplicity. Adding a simple node seemed like quite a project.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have had it for five years. We had seven nodes, and last year, we bought five more nodes.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is pretty stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
In our infrastructure, we started with five nodes. We then increased them to six, and then we grew them to seven. It is not “plug and play” as they say. It took Dell’s technician almost a week to add the node so it is not that simple.
How are customer service and support?
It is a very expensive support, so it is logical that they will assist you quickly, but in the end, for the resolution itself, in many cases, you go around 1,000 times. You waste a lot of time, and they do not find a solution right away.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
This is the first solution of this type that we've used.
What was our ROI?
The ROI cannot be measured. In the end, it is a horizontal service that we have to provide, and we have no other option but to give it. The cost does not matter.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is very expensive.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We also evaluated HP and other solutions, but in the end, we chose VxRail because other colleagues were using it and we already had that knowledge close to us. We said, “Well, let’s take advantage of the know-how.”
We did not consider public cloud infrastructure before choosing VxRail. Due to our business characteristics, a public cloud is not an option. We must have everything on-premises.
What other advice do I have?
At the moment, it does cover our objectives. I do not yet know about the competition. We are now evaluating alternatives, and we cannot yet compare. I would rate Dell VxRail a six out of ten.

Dijimos “Bueno, aprovechemos el know-how”.

VMware-integrated, good data protection, and great support
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature is that it is VMware-embedded. VxRail HCI is on VMware, and we can use VMware vCenter and vSphere. Our infrastructure consists of servers and VMware, and by using VxRail, our experience and familiarity have not changed because VxRail HCI is on VMware."
- "If they continue developing their product regarding VMware, it will be one of the best products in the HCI space. In terms of additional features, there is nothing missing because, for data protection, they also have the CDP option for VM. They can protect the VM at any point in time."
What is our primary use case?
We are using VxRail for the whole infrastructure of our company. We are using VxRail E660F.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is that it is VMware-embedded. VxRail HCI is on VMware, and we can use VMware vCenter and vSphere. Our infrastructure consists of servers and VMware, and by using VxRail, our experience and familiarity have not changed because VxRail HCI is on VMware.
What needs improvement?
If they continue developing their product regarding VMware, it will be one of the best products in the HCI space. In terms of additional features, there is nothing missing because, for data protection, they also have the CDP option for VM. They can protect the VM at any point in time.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using VxRail for two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We never had any problems with stability. It is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable. Currently, we have almost 40 VMs on VxRail.
Only the IT admin works with VxRail. Only the IT admin can monitor and configure VxRail.
How are customer service and support?
We create tickets for support. We are using the Dell portal and if we have any problem with VMware or hardware, we just create a ticket with their support. We do not need to go to the vendor hardware, or we do not need to go to VMware. We can contact them through a single point.
I would rate their support a ten out of ten because once I created a ticket in the afternoon and in about half an hour, I got an email from someone about the problem. He wanted to have a phone call with me. I appreciate it.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using the traditional servers and VMware. We moved to VxRail because we wanted availability and 100% uptime. We do not want any downtime in our company. We want everything to be online 24/7.
How was the initial setup?
Its initial setup is very easy as compared to vSAN, traditional models, and VMware vCenter because everything is automated, but you need to prepare your data, for example, your IP address for the cluster and your username and password.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It is expensive as compared to other products in the same category.
What other advice do I have?
You can use it if you are familiar with VMware because VxRail is VMware. Everything is VMware.
I would rate VxRail a ten out of ten. It is more expensive than other products in this category, but because of the performance, experience, and data protection that you get, it is worth the money.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Uses a plug-and-play concept to add nodes and supports straightforward scaling
Pros and Cons
- "VxRail supports straightforward scaling, allowing you to add as many nodes as needed for upgrades and simplifying the upgrade process."
- "There's a specific procedure to follow when shutting down a VxRail system."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use VxRail for small-scale deployments in our organization. Our virtual machines and AD servers run on it, utilizing no more than four nodes due to its high recovery capabilities. We rely on it exclusively for storage and computing needs.
What is most valuable?
VxRail uses a plug-and-play concept, so you can easily add nodes. While the initial implementation might be complex, you won't need a dedicated team to manage it once it's fully set up. VxRail supports straightforward scaling, allowing you to add as many nodes as needed for upgrades and simplifying the upgrade process.
What needs improvement?
There's a specific procedure to follow when shutting down a VxRail system. The process can be complex due to the system's configurations and load balancing. Because VxRail uses node-based configurations, handling shutdowns, restarts, or reboots might seem challenging. Simplifying this process could improve the overall user experience.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using VxRail for six to seven years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The device is stable.
I rate the solution’s stability an eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a strong player in the cloud market. While it may sometimes be more expensive, it is well-suited for on-premises needs.
400 users use this solution, but not everyone is deployed on the VxRail virtual machine because we migrate them to the cloud.
I rate it as ten out of ten.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of VxRail can be challenging for someone without a strong background in virtual machines. If a team lacking experience with these systems is tasked with the setup, seeking support from DirectTel for the implementation process may be beneficial. The deployment takes more than six to seven hours.
I rate the initial setup a five out of ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It's too expensive.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend that Dell focus on extending the product lifecycle of VxRail to around eight years instead of frequently releasing new products. This approach could lead to a better return on investment.
When comparing large-scale and medium-scale companies to small-scale ones, VxRail is generally more suitable for medium to large enterprises. Small-scale businesses may not require the advanced features of VxRail and might find it less cost-effective for their needs. VxRail can be a good fit for medium and large companies, offering scalability and efficiency that align with their demands. It can be cost-effective in the long run, especially considering total lifecycle benefits.
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Provides centralized management that is easy to manage and easy to update, and the support is excellent
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable features are ease of management and ease of applying updates."
- "In the version that I was working with, the integrations are in need of improvement."
What is our primary use case?
I use VxRail with VMware VCF. The requirement is to have a private cloud to provide services for users.
How has it helped my organization?
VxRail has improved the way we function because everything is centralized. There is no need to be going to many different places. it's all in one pane of glass, making it easier to manage.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features are ease of management and ease of applying updates. It provides centralized management.
What needs improvement?
In the version that I was working with, the integrations are in need of improvement.
The technical support is in slight need of improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using VxRail for several years, and am just starting a brand new project with it. This will be a fresh deployment.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
VxRail is pretty robust and steady.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
VxRail is very easy to scale. It is simple to add nodes, scale-out, or scale-up. We have more than 2,000 users. There are many different people in people in many different departments, going from regular day to day administration, helpdesk, cybersecurity operations, forensics, virtualization administrators, VDI administrators, and so forth.
How are customer service and technical support?
I have been in contact with technical support and they are excellent. I would rate them a nine out of ten on support because there is always room for improvement, but they do a good job.
Sometimes, when passing on tickets to other techs because people leave on vacation or for other reasons, they don't follow up quickly enough in my opinion. I have found that sometimes, I've had tickets open and two days later, I don't hear anything and it's because the person was out and nobody else took over the ticket. Other than that, they are on point.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In my previous organization, we were using a regular blade chassis. We were not using HCI solutions. Rather, it was just the normal virtualization environment deployment using fabric switches. We were also using Dell servers, only it was M540s and 840s on a Dell M1000M chassis.
It was different, and HCI is something that I like.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is pretty easy and straightforward.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
At about $200,000, this solution is a little bit pricey but it is more economical than others such as Nutanix or Cisco Hyperflex. Dell is more economical.
What other advice do I have?
In my previous deployment, there were a couple of things that I identified as needing improvement. I believe they were addressed on the new version of their software because, in the previous deployment, I wasn't using the latest version. Apparently, VMware came out with VCF 4.1, and Dell came out with a newer iteration. At this point, I'm hoping that the stuff is fixed. Once I start working with the newest version, I'll see what new features I would like to see in the next one.
My advice for anybody looking into implementing VxRail is to read the documentation and do the virtual labs that they have. Repeat them over and over before deploy it on the actual system that they are going to deploy to avoid having to take everything down and redo it.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Its flexiblity gives us rack space and it saves on manpower
Pros and Cons
- "It gives us tons of flexibility. We can create new machines, then destroy them if they don't work out. We test a lot of use cases that may or may not play out. We can build all types of scenarios into virtual machines that we may or may not use. If we don't use them, we just turn them off, no using up resources."
- "I would like them to include an easier solution to host its own DNS. When they changed to version 6.5, they took out the easy features of letting the rail be its own DNS. You can still trick the system and make the VxRail Manager another one of the rail-required VMs become the DNS, but it's a lot of extra work. I'd like to see it put back into the UI."
What is our primary use case?
We use it in a infrastructure in a box-style setup for onsite deployments. We take certain assets to remote locations and record data for whatever sorties that they are doing.
How has it helped my organization?
The flexibility has improved our organization. If we went the traditional method, we would have to carry a lot more equipment. VxRail allows us to take all the systems that we would use in a full rack in a quarter rack.
What is most valuable?
It gives us tons of flexibility. We can create new machines, then destroy them if they don't work out. We test a lot of use cases that may or may not play out. We can build all types of scenarios into virtual machines that we may or may not use. If we don't use them, we just turn them off, no using up resources.
What needs improvement?
I would like them to include an easier solution to host its own DNS. When they changed to version 6.5, they took out the easy features of letting the rail be its own DNS. You can still trick the system and make the VxRail Manager another one of the rail-required VMs become the DNS, but it's a lot of extra work. I'd like to see it put back into the UI.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of version 6.5 and above has been pretty good.
Version 6.0 and below has always been kind of a pain to work with, but there have been huge improvements. I like the inclusion of the HTML5 vCenter.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is great. Thankfully, our data needs are in the 200 gigabyte range when we go out onsite, so we're not overloading it. We just have the single rail that has four hosts on it.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is not so great. They had the VMware personnel trying to help us out. We had some issues on one of the rails, and it never got resolved. It is just one of those things on the to-do list.
They were walking me through some of the diagnostic stuff, and it was clear that they had no idea. I ended up sending five different sets of logs to their FTP site, and there was no resolution. After I sent the last set of logs, which was right over Christmas break, they were like, "We can't keep this ticket open for two weeks while Dell EMC goes offline at the end of the year."
This just something I haven't picked back up yet. Thankfully, it's not a production critical piece of equipment right now. However, I would love to figure out how to do a factory reset and start from scratch. This was from version 6.0, and I've got reservations with anything lower than version 6.5.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward for versions 6.5 and 6.7.
What was our ROI?
There is the logistical cost savings of the produced footprint of the equipment.
There is an administrative cost savings. Instead of having seven to 15 separate boxes that someone has to administer on 15 different terminals, you can do the majority of it from one interface. Therefore, it saves on manpower costs.
What other advice do I have?
I don't think I would have picked a different product.

Co-Founder at Tech RIdge Solutions
Provides good performance and high scalability
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of the solution is the performance."
- "The solution's setup is a bit complex, and the complexity needs to be reduced."
What is our primary use case?
We use VxRail for ERC for SAP.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of the solution is the performance.
What needs improvement?
The solution's setup is a bit complex, and the complexity needs to be reduced.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using VxRail for three to four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the solution’s stability an eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution’s scalability is very good. Our clients for VxRail are usually small and medium businesses.
I rate the solution ten out of ten for scalability.
How are customer service and support?
Dell's technical support is not that good. The support team takes a long time to respond, and there are challenges regarding the people's expertise. We have been facing a lot of problems with the technical support for any of the Dell products, including storage, backup recovery, RecoverPoint, or VxRail.
On a scale from one to ten, where one is bad and ten is good, I rate the solution’s technical support a four to five out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
How was the initial setup?
On a scale from one to ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy, I rate the solution's initial setup a six out of ten.
What about the implementation team?
The solution’s deployment takes a few days.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
If we normally quote for storage, we have to quote for something like PowerStore. In that area, the solution has brought down some costs. VxRail is still more expensive than its competitor solutions.
On a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten.
What other advice do I have?
We had some initial challenges because of the networking component. To overcome them, we had to go through a lot of documentation and information from the website. I would recommend VxRail to customers who have a VMware environment and want to consolidate everything into servers without using the storage.
Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: Partner

Very stable with excellent customer support and great scalability
Pros and Cons
- "The solution is perfect for the lifecycle management of hardware."
- "The licensing costs are too expensive. They should work on their pricing model."
What is our primary use case?
The solution is primarily used as a general data center and VDI.
How has it helped my organization?
I consult multiple organizations across many industries. VxRAIL is a platform I lead with. It reduces IT admin time and complexity around managing a hyper-converged environment.
What is most valuable?
The solution is perfect for the lifecycle management of hardware.
The solution allows automated updates to hosts os and hardware, and in some cases switch hardware patches as well.
What needs improvement?
The licensing costs are too expensive for smaller deployments. They should work on their pricing model at the low end. many of the customer's at the smaller end of the scale would benefit the most from the automation but it often times becomes cost prohibitive.
The solution needs a little more flexibility in the hardware that is supported by VxRAIL. Right now, they're very restrictive of the hardware supported.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been dealing with the solution for two or three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is rock solid. Organizations consider it completely reliable. There aren't bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash. It's great.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of the solution is very impressive, actually. You can scale a very large environment with ease. It's not trouble at all.
On the converse of that, it doesn't work so well for very small environments. This is mostly for if you've got, for example, four hosts already. It's not for small environments. You need to really have 100 to 200 VMs to really take advantage of it.
As a reseller, I'll typically check in with clients after a few months to see how things are going and to see if they need a new node or anything of that nature. Typically, they are looking to scale a bit more.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is phenomenal. I'd give it five stars. They are very responsive and knowledgeable. We're satisfied with the level of service they provide.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have been selling virtualization platforms for around 10 years. Hyper Converged Infrastructure is perfect for general data center work loads and for VDI.
How was the initial setup?
For myself, it's fairly straightforward and no longer very complex. However, I've done more than a dozen of them so far. If you don't know what you're doing, it can be pretty complex. You really do need some expertise with the solution to manage everything.
In terms of deployment, it chiefly takes about two days of planning and about two days of implementation.
In terms of maintenance, what makes it so nice is that it automates management and patching of all of an organization's virtual hosts and even their switches if the switches are supported. Therefore, it reduces admin.
What about the implementation team?
We handle the implementation for our clients.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Users do find that licensing is quite pricey.
The costs vary from customer to customer.
A typical node that I would sell to a customer has a list price be between $50,000 and $80,000 per node. Organizations typically start with four nodes. That's the hardware, software, VMware licensing, everything.
Customers typically pay about half of that for VSAN REady nodes - approximately $25,000 to $50,000 a node. On average, it costs about $200,000 to get your foot in the door. That can be quite expensive for any organization that isn't a large enterprise.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have trained and worked with all of the major HCI options out there.
VSAN (VxRail is built on top of this)
Nutanix ( a very solid alternative)
Simplivity ( not to the level of VSAN or Nutanix)
Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct ( good idea, not quite ready for production)
What other advice do I have?
We're a partner with Dell VMware. VxRail is a part of Dell.
I largely just sell and set up the solutions; I don't use the solution regularly myself.
It's an amazing product overall.
This solution definitely requires an organization to plan everything out correctly. You need to map out your networking, understand what your resource utilization is going to be, make sure you get the right amount of RAM and storage on the host, and then also understand the impact to your licensing costs for Microsoft.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. I would give it perfect marks if it wasn't so expensive.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
