Secure, easy to use, centrally managed, and works well
Pros and Cons
  • "You can put all your applications on a mobile device, be it a phone or tablet. It is secure and easy to use. Because it is centrally managed, you don't have to do any configuration on the phone. I just got the phone and connected to the central applications. I just downloaded one thing and everything got rolled out. Email, calendar, and other things were deployed centrally. If you don't have AirWatch, you have to configure your phone manually. For example, you need to deploy and configure your email manually and then synchronize everything. It is much simpler when a mobile device is centrally managed."
  • "Its performance is quite good on Apple phones or even mid-range phones. If you install an AirWatch on a phone that is not too powerful, you will have performance issues. That's only because the phone is not too powerful, and there is not enough memory, etc. They could do a lighter version for a less powerful phone. It would also be useful for very small companies that don't want to spend money on expensive phones. Having said that, I don't think that is their target market. If their target market is enterprise, all enterprises perhaps have an agreement with Google or Apple, and they would get a phone that has already been tested, and they know that AirWatch will work on that phone."

What is our primary use case?

We deploy AirWatch on the mobile devices of our employees.

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved the way our organization functions. It provides security. If you're giving phones to your employees, you want the platform to be secure. If an employee loses his or her phone or someone steals it, the data on the phone itself is secured because you can just centrally disable everything. So, you only lose the device but not the data. If you lose your phone and there is no AirWatch in it, you need to find other creative ways to disable or get your phone back.

It allows companies to apply rules related to company policy. You can use your phone like a normal device with the exception that it is being monitored by the company, which I don't mind because I use the phone exclusively for work.

What is most valuable?

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for three months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable. There are no issues or bugs at this moment. In the earlier versions, there were some bugs, but they have fixed those. My experience is only with iOS, and it seems stable. I have got an Apple device. iOS is a quite stable platform, and they have tuned it to work really well with iOS and even Android.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

My company is quite big, and it seems good for big companies. It is for the enterprise environment. You won't use AirWatch for one or two individuals. You use it when you have a quite sizable mass of employees. In our company, it is being used by sales professionals, VPs, and C-levels.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used their technical support. After you do the installation, usually you shouldn't have any problem unless there is a hardware issue with the phone itself. If there is any problem with AirWatch, they should be able to fix it from there because everything is centrally managed.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

When I joined the company, they gave me the phone and asked me to install AirWatch, so that was it.

How was the initial setup?

It is quite straightforward for technical and non-technical people. You just press next and read what you're doing, and that's it. It is nothing too complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is quite expensive, but I think large companies have agreements with these organizations that provide remote monitoring for phones, and they get massive discounts. The public price does not reflect what they pay. You won't get the same pricing if you're buying for 10 employees versus 1,000 employees. On the public price, you get perhaps a 10% discount, but if you're buying 1,000, the discount could be really massive, especially if you signed a contract for a number of years.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate AirWatch a nine out of ten. It is quite good, and I have a good experience with it. The phone has never failed, so it is working well.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Provides valuable instant synchronization and device management features
Pros and Cons
  • "The platform makes the mobile device management process straightforward to handle."
  • "They could provide DLP integration for applications and specific user account security."

What is our primary use case?

We use the product to manage the device.

How has it helped my organization?

The platform makes the mobile device management process straightforward to handle.

What is most valuable?

The product’s most valuable feature is the instant synchronization. It swiftly synchronizes changes made on mobile devices.

What needs improvement?

They could provide DLP integration for applications and specific user account security. Additionally, they should enable data copy-paste restrictions for professional accounts.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using VMware Workspace ONE for nine years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the platform’s stability a nine out of ten. I have encountered a few downtime issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The platform has good scalability. We have installed it on nine endpoints in our organization.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team takes a longer time to respond to queries.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. I follow the user guide for installation steps. It takes a month to complete. It is not very complicated to maintain.

What about the implementation team?

I implement the product myself.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Compared to Intune, Workspace ONE provides a faster synchronization feature.

What other advice do I have?

The product’s feature that significantly improved employee productivity is the seamless access to documents from anywhere.

The platform’s unified endpoint management capability significantly aids in simplifying IT operations. It enables centralized management of application updates. Moreover, the security features, especially the Data Loss Prevention (DLP) functionality, have significantly impacted our data protection strategy.

We have integrated the application with Office 365 for compliance purposes. It helps us manage conditional access to the services. It has improved the security status.

I recommend VMware Workspace ONE to others and rate it an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Needs a better management interface, requires more support, and is complex to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "It has good stability."
  • "We'd like more useful support."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case was to containerize data and allow us to deploy applications securely. That was the use case that was predicated on and funded as a security initiative.

How has it helped my organization?

We had no MDM in place before, and we had one after the fact. When we had a departing employee, we were able to close off their access immediately.

What is most valuable?

Basically, the data containerization and the ability to publish and consistently push apps is the most valuable aspect of the product.

It has good stability.

The product can scale.

There was nothing that the product couldn't do except force upgrades of iOS on iPhones.

What needs improvement?

The management interface needs to be better.

We'd like more useful support.

The scripting language is all very unique to the product as opposed to using any kind of industry-standard methods. That might be frustrating for some teams.

The initial setup can be complex.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've worked with the solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution seems to be stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This product scales well.

At the high water mark, we had 3,200 users. We're down to about 2,100 now.

We do not have plans to expand the solution for a few reasons. Number one is cost. Number two is the management interface is poor. Number three is the absence of support from the vendor. Number four would be how hard it is to support Gene Pool. Finding people with expertise with the product are few and far between.

How are customer service and support?

Support is absolutely horrible.

If I was not escalating through the account team that I've got, I would have practically no support on it whatsoever. In terms of quality, it's an absolute one out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

How was the initial setup?

Initially, the setup itself is quite complex. We had bought what VMware called a starter kit, which came with some professional services to get us up and running with the product. I'd rate it a four out of five in terms of ease of deployment as we did have those professional services to help us.

Unfortunately, the implementation, I would have to call a fail. We had several existing devices, and installing the product properly involved wiping the phone and installing and then restoring the user's information. And we had a very large resistance to that approach from our client community. We ended up installing more of a BYOD model, which limited the value of the platform to our organization.

What about the implementation team?

We had the help of VMware professional services.

While they were helpful, we were not prepared for the amount of change it would be inflicting on our user base, and as a result, it was not as successful as we would've liked.

What was our ROI?

The ROI was predicated on a more secure environment. That was achieved.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's a subscription from VMware. We have a hybrid setup with a physical gateway on site, however, beyond that, it's subscription-based.

We are paying about $145,000 a year on a three-year subscription with no ability to scale up or scale down within that class model.

I was not here when the initial purchase was made, so I don't have that comparative analysis from three years ago. It does not strike me as particularly expensive, however, given that Intune is now included with my E3 subscription, it's on the expensive side now.

Typically, the solution comes as part of a package deal.

What other advice do I have?

We are end-users.

I'd warn future users not to underestimate the impact on an existing environment.

I'd rate the solution three out of ten. It's hard to use in the absence of support. It does what it needs to do. However, I don't like it.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A management platform with excellent Client Control feature that allows IT administrators to centrally control end users' mobile devices and cloud-hosted virtual desktops and applications
Pros and Cons
  • "The Client Control feature in VMware Workspace ONE is most valuable for managing client devices, including mobile devices and laptops. Another impactful feature is the per-service tooling, allowing access to the data centre on a per-application basis. We use the complete VMware stack, integrating Horizon for application delivery and Carbon Black for endpoint protection. We have outsourced our device management, which streamlines our IT tasks as our supplier handles them competitively."
  • "VMware Workspace ONE sometimes has bugs that prevent it from working as intended or expected. Generally, these bugs can lead to unexpected results and hinder effectiveness."

What is our primary use case?

I use VMware Workspace ONE for client and device management. This includes managing mobile devices and laptops.

What is most valuable?

The Client Control feature in VMware Workspace ONE is most valuable for managing client devices, including mobile devices and laptops. What needs improvement?

VMware Workspace ONE sometimes has bugs that prevent it from working as intended or expected. Generally, these bugs can lead to unexpected results and hinder effectiveness.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware Workspace ONE for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate it a seven out of ten in terms of stability. It is challenging to stabilise it, but once it's running, it runs well. The challenge comes from the complexity of our organisation and some unexpected results from VMware. A more straightforward environment would likely experience fewer stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It delivers as expected, providing what you would anticipate from such a tool. Currently, we have about four thousand devices under management, and we use it extensively as our primary tool for application delivery. If it doesn't work, the whole organization comes to a halt.

I would rate the scalability of VMware Workspace ONE as an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

VMware's support organization is speedy, providing fixes quickly. I've mostly had positive interactions with them.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before using VMware Workspace ONE, we used the Microsoft SCCM solution, but it was getting old. We decided to switch to Workspace ONE because of its capabilities and pricing. We also evaluated the Microsoft suite before choosing VMware.

How was the initial setup?

I would rate my experience with the initial setup of VMware Workspace ONE as a five out of ten.

It's a mix between the complexity of our environment and the complexity of the tool. Our challenges were stability in the environment and ensuring all functional use cases were delivered through Workspace ONE.

The solution is deployed in a hybrid environment, with VMware Workspace ONE in the cloud and tunnelling in our on-premises data centre. We are also transitioning to Microsoft Azure for our cloud solutions.

What was our ROI?

We have noticed a return on investment, as it is easier for users to use, provides more flexibility, and offers better security compliance with regulations.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay approximately thirty to thirty-five euros per device per month for the complete suite, and this is a fixed cost with one, three, or five-year licensing in advance.

I would rate the pricing a four out of ten, making it affordable.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate VMware Workspace ONE as a seven out of ten. I advise others to look into usingWorkspace ONE to find a suitable partner with extensive product knowledge.

Stable solution but could be less complicated
Pros and Cons
  • "I would rate the stability as eight out of ten."
  • "The solution is too complicated. A lot of end customers don't know how to start when they go into the console."

What is our primary use case?

I'm a reseller and help our customers implement the solution. We're using version 20.

Most of our customers deploy the solution on a public cloud. It's the VMware shared cloud. Most of our customers are small enterprises because most of the businesses in Hong Kong are small. Our customers usually have 20 to 100 devices.

There are two distributors in Hong Kong. We buy from the distributor, resell the solution, and we help other IT or telecom companies to implement the solution for their customers because they don't have professionals to do it.

What is most valuable?

Our customers request this solution because they like the repetition.

What needs improvement?

The solution is too complicated. A lot of end customers don't know how to start when they go into the console. They request our service to help them implement the MDM policy.

The distributor and VMware's people can't tell me what's the differentiation or the spec, because MDM products are very similar these days. Some of that might be because the vendor thinks it's good but it's not what the customer wants. That's why it's very difficult.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for about three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability as eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability as eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate technical support as six out of ten.

Usually, we solve most of the problems that our customers have. If they have a problem and need us to raise a ticket to VMware, then usually it's a very serious problem, and it takes time to find the right person to solve it.

Last time, it took three to four weeks for technical support to find the right person to solve the problem.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also working with SOTI and Samsung Knox.

If it's the government center, we usually recommend that they use SOTI. If it's a commercial center, what we recommend depends on their budget. Depending on the budget and the type of device that the customer uses, we would recommend either Samsung Knox or Workspace ONE.

How was the initial setup?

Most of our customers deploy the solution on the cloud, not on-premises. The most complicated part of the installation is installing the server.

Implementation can take six weeks to two months.

First, we get the requirement from the customers. They tell us what they want on the mobile and the features or result that they want. Then, we input and create the policy for them. After that, we test the result on the device. If it's okay, then we do the training after implementing the policy.

For deployment, usually one project manager and two engineers are needed.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you lower the price too much, then the reseller and distributor don't earn money and they won't promote your product because software is a service.

The solution is about $45 per device for a 12 month subscription. The price is standard across the world.

For the enrollment service, if the project is too big and there are too many devices, sometimes a customer will outsource the enrollment service or the professional service.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I am also working with SOTI and Samsung Knox.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution as seven out of ten.

My advice is to find a company that knows MDM. For example, the team in my company mainly specializes in MDM, which is why we can help customers. Not many companies in Hong Kong can help customers to implement.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Useful gateway tunnel, support multiple devices, and quick support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of VMware Workspace ONE is the support for multiple devices. Not only iOS, and Android, but all kinds of platforms, including VR device management. Additionally, it has a tunneling feature, which no other solution provides. Other solutions have to integrate with other tools to have this functionality, whereas VMware Workspace ONE has its own application gateway tunnel."
  • "VMware Workspace ONE can improve in virtual reality. Customers are now looking toward virtual reality devices. Though it supports virtual reality, it's treated as an Android device. Customers want to deal with VR devices, they want a specific VR tool. Not an Android device VR tool."

What is our primary use case?

VMware Workspace ONE can be deployed in the cloud and on-premise.

The main use case for VMware Workspace ONE is for customers who are looking for a single tool for all their device management needs and have had limitations with respect to Mac specifically and virtual reality devices with other solutions such as Intune. They can move to VMware Workspace ONE, where they can have all kinds of support.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of VMware Workspace ONE is the support for multiple devices. Not only iOS, and Android, but all kinds of platforms, including VR device management. Additionally, it has a tunneling feature, which no other solution provides. Other solutions have to integrate with other tools to have this functionality, whereas VMware Workspace ONE has its own application gateway tunnel.

What needs improvement?

VMware Workspace ONE can improve in virtual reality. Customers are now looking toward virtual reality devices. Though it supports virtual reality, it's treated as an Android device. Customers want to deal with VR devices, they want a specific VR tool. Not an Android device VR tool.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware Workspace ONE for approximately eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

VMware Workspace ONE is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of VMware Workspace ONE is good.

How are customer service and support?

The support of VMware Workspace ONE is good. When we opened a ticket we had a quick response.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment of VMware Workspace ONE is easy. The time it takes for the deployment depends on the environment totally. If it is only a small environment, with no integration, with the cloud instance, and no set of a separate instance or sub-component is required, it can be set up in approximately a week.

In the use case scenarios, for example, where there is an on-premise instance where there are unified access gateway components required, then it takes a little longer because the firewall ports and setting up the infrastructure will take some time.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution can be costly when the customer is dealing with multiple platforms. If a customer is only dealing with iOS, Windows, and Android then Intune is the better choice because there are free licenses.

What other advice do I have?

I suggest to others if they have multiple device platforms, especially in Apple and the VR device area. VMware Workspace ONE is the best tool where they can receive not only the VR and Mac support but in order to manage the Microsoft Windows devices as well, they will have good functionality.

I rate VMware Workspace ONE an eight out of ten.

Beneficial existing group policies upgrading, reliable, and helpful support
Pros and Cons
  • "You can upgrade and migrate the existing group policies that we use for VMware Workspace ONE for the active directory. We can push the policies and group policies. We can migrate it and manage it from VMware Workspace ONE."
  • "VMware Workspace ONE for the new users or the new clients that they try to procure and learn it, there can have difficulties. It does not have user-friendly portals. The portal seems to be more user-friendly in Microsoft solutions."

What is our primary use case?

We have multiple use cases for VMware Workspace ONE. The main use case for VMware Workspace ONE is offline domain drawing.

We don't have any limits for Windows 10 Enterprise, because if you want to go for the endpoint management, it's a need to have Enterprise Edition for Windows 10 devices.

What is most valuable?

You can upgrade and migrate the existing group policies that we use for VMware Workspace ONE for the active directory. We can push the policies and group policies. We can migrate it and manage it from VMware Workspace ONE.

What needs improvement?

VMware Workspace ONE for the new users or the new clients that they try to procure and learn it, there can have difficulties. It does not have user-friendly portals. The portal seems to be more user-friendly in Microsoft solutions.

We don't have the availability of sharing with other platforms, such as social platforms, or YouTube. We don't find those learning materials. It is very difficult to learn.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used VMware Workspace ONE within 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

VMware Workspace ONE is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of VMware Workspace ONE is good. If we want to scale we only need to purchase more licenses.

We have approximately 50,000 users using this solution.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the support from VMware Workspace ONE a four out of five.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used other solutions, such as Microsoft Intune. I have found VMware Workspace One better than Microsoft Intune.

How was the initial setup?

VMware Workspace ONE is not straightforward, but we had tested for the on-premise setup. It worked very well and we also tried the SaaS solution. We have tried both solutions. It took us five months to do.

Even though we were not aware of a lot of things and there were dependencies that were the challenge. We had to address all of them. If we want to test it now, it would be two months maximum, we can test it and onboard it.

What about the implementation team?

We did the deployment with the help of the VMware team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

VMware Workspace ONE licensing price is good with their supportability. The price of VMware Workspace ONE is reasonable. We are using an enterprise license.

What other advice do I have?

I rate VMware Workspace ONE a nine out of ten.

A straightforward setup with a good set of features and very good documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has very good documentation."
  • "I'd like to see expanded device support, particularly for IoT things like SCADA devices."

What is our primary use case?

We've had a full range of use cases. It's great for community colleges or remote workers. Onsite it can be on desktops or mobile. It has the ability to wipe mobile devices. You can lock them down or control them.

Obviously, with COVID, the remote workforce has been a huge driver.

I had one client that had a bunch of gyms where you got to work out and they deployed Workspace One across all of them and used that just to serve all the desktops. That way everything was uniform, and everything was the same patching level. It just simplified management. That's one example of a specific use-case.

How has it helped my organization?

You can always do more to gain network efficiency for delivery. At the end of the day, you're sending mouse clicks, keyboards, and screens out, and just improving delivery mechanisms. If you've got a full spectrum of consumers out there, they are there on everything. You've got everything from cellular service to multi-gigabit in homes these days. Just optimizing the network, that is a thing companies are going to chase - and that will be the case across all solutions.

What is most valuable?

The customer needed to cut their budget. They already owned Workspace One which was an additional cost. VMware just released an MDM-only version of Workspace One, which was much less and that met their budget needs. They were able to stay on the same platform and cut their budget as they needed.

All of the features have been quite helpful. They are all equally powerful and equally valuable for businesses - however, for different reasons. It just depends on the business which features end up being the most valuable to them.

Mainly, the solution offers a simplified administration, which is likely the biggest value for a business. The solution makes it possible for businesses to free their people up to think about the next steps for the business.

Particularly during COVID, everybody had to evolve all of their businesses to survive. Everyone has been looking for better ROI.

The initial setup is pretty straightforward.

The solution has very good documentation.

We've found the solution to be very stable.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see expanded device support, particularly for IoT things like SCADA devices. That would be a huge benefit, especially as we automate more in production in the commercial sectors like manufacturing.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about three and a half years at this point. It's been a while now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall I'm impressed with the solution. Some of the historical predecessors have not been as solid and stable as compared to Intune. VMware is adapting and scaling the Workstation One product line, and they likely just created the new MDM-only version to have something outside of Horizon for people who want only MDM

That said, this is very stable. It doesn't have bugs or glitches and doesn't crash or freeze. It's very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've found that the solution works just as well for small companies as it does for large ones. It works across the spectrum of business sizes very well.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have had interactions with technical support. Each customer is different, however. Sometimes we get into some squirrely situations where we're trying to meet a weird customer need and have to pull them in.

I have found them to be very, very knowledgeable and very good at thinking out of the box. I've never had a bad experience with one of their engineers - even if they are trying to help me do something weird. When a customer wants to do something really weird, they find a way to make it work. I haven't had a situation where they couldn't make it work.

We are extremely satisfied with their level of support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex, especially if you're familiar with the VMware product line. It's very straightforward due to the fact that it's intuitive with our way of thinking.

Most IT people will tell you if they came up with Microsoft or Cisco, whichever ecosystem, once they understood the mental model behind product design, then it didn't matter. They could find their way around anything new. The same is true with VMware. If a company is used to VMware tools and other areas, it'll transition straight across for that.

In our case, we did an emergency deployment. What I would call a saturation deployment. We threw technical bodies at it to get it done faster. We turned it in in about 48 hours. The equipment came onsite.

Assuming the equipment's there, you can move fast. What might be an issue right now is lag time. The big lag time is just trying to get the equipment. Once it's was there, we were able to turn it around within 48 hours. It was for a 3,500 students community college that went overnight during COVID from classroom instruction to online.

Their first online classes were zoom. They deployed a whole bunch of low-cost laptops out there and they allowed people to bring their own devices if they had one, as long as the college could manage it. It was just kind of a rush, however, we got it out and deployed and we found that help desk calls were very low. It's just a combination of a great product and good documentation.

In terms of maintenance, if it's MDM-only then you just need one person, maybe half time, for up to a thousand users. I've got one person at about 2,500 users right now. It's just a matter of how much change goes on in the environment, or if are you deploying new applications or iOS versions. If you are constantly turning over devices, you may need a bit more maintenance. Typically this type of work is assigned to an end-point administrator.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution runs at roughly around $36/user for a year. Companies just pay the basic fee. That's MSRP. They do sales off of that so that vendors can get discounts under certain circumstances. The price will vary, however, that's the MSRP on it.

I've seen them go crazy at the company's year-end. Timing really can be everything.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a solutions architect for a VMware partner. I supervise the implementation team. There are engineers that are out there that implement it and do the post-implementation support as well.

Largely, we are working with on-premises deployment models, however, we're working towards a hybrid deployment. It's hard for some organizations to break the old ways of thinking. They mistrust the cloud and while on-site is tried and true, and something you can put your hand on, it's just an education process and it takes time for companies to come around to the cloud is just as good.

I would advise companies to not implement as you learn. Rather take time to understand the product and plan everything ahead. It will be easier.

On a scale from one to ten. I'd put it at an eight. There's always room to improve and always room to grow. In comparison, for example, I'd rate Intune about a six, however, it's definitely coming.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
