Has improved process modeling and analysis while supporting integration with organizational data
The process design in ARIS BPA does help with our operational efficiency. What we are doing is object library management for various kinds of objects that we are using in ARIS BPA during our process modeling. We are using that to do a lot of analysis on how many times a system is being used in how many processes, who are the major stakeholders, and if we enhance one system, how is it going to impact other processes and integrated processes. This is helping us a lot. Everything related to ARIS BPA is helping us with regards to enhanced processes, strengthened controls, identifying risks, assessing process capabilities, and identifying where the gaps are and what kinds of activities within the processes are automated and manual. We are doing a lot of things with regards to the processes as it is at our heart. Processes are one thing and then we have different kinds of things which are related to it, such as SLAs, guidelines, and policy. We are identifying areas of improvement in other documents as well.

If customers want to change the color or the logo, they have to go through every page to verify everything is right. We have a strategic approach for the customer. I was involved in almost 100 sessions where the customers were looking for a one-time process visualization or one-time process mining, not for a long-term association with this tool. The customer's requirements are more tactical than strategic. We had some challenges during this time frame as I was with iGrafx, and electricity costs rose in Germany. One customer stopped a large deal because they had to reduce every non-invested investment due to the electricity bill rising by 500% to 800%.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Platform that it supports covers legacy and new. Caters to moving older objects into an integrated DB, relatively popular ones: SQL, Oracle, etc."
"The tool has good navigation."
"The initial setup and installation are very straightforward."
"It has allowed us to model our enterprise process architecture."
"Good at controlling the workflow and relevant key processes."
"Fully-reportable database over Visio."
"If used with clear strategy, it can provide a really powerful tool to analyze the whole Enterprise, from IT, Processes and Organization."
"This is the most comprehensive tool for capturing the process details."
"We found the technical support to be helpful."
"One of the biggest plus points of the product stems from the fact that I have never seen any glitches in it."
"iGrafx is the most comprehensive way to have all the cross-feeds and the documents related to workflows, like cross-notes."
"If you need software to help you easily design processes, make simulations, build value stream mappings, which has some LEAN features, and DMAIC support, I strongly encourage you to go forward and buy iGrafx."
"Web diagramming and RACI have helped expedite the process, capture, and ownership initiatives of our organization."
"It is very easy to use for describing processes and is very useful in the simulation of the process putting parameters and the metrics process."
"Provides a valuable BPMN feature."
"The solution's technical support is of good quality since they offer fast and seamless services."

Cons

"One of the issues is, when you are defining databases, the way they use entities and relationship diagrams, the way we can define data, like data models, there is still a part they could improve."
"Their license model is really difficult to understand, and licenses are quite expensive."
"There are some things in the collaboration module that could be improved a little, such as the functionality which dynamically pushes notifications to interested people when a process changes during the Release Cycle Management workflow."
"With ARIS BPM, the script creation is quite cumbersome; with version ten, the typed ones were quite extensive where we needed our developers to do scripting."
"Regarding stability, when there are any customized settings being done at customer end - post upgrade to newer versions - it makes the customer environment unstable for a short duration."
"ARIS BPA is not really a platform that offers you the opportunity to execute processes that you model."
"Aris BPA is very complex and very difficult to start learning and onboarding."
"The integration between ARIS, webMethods, and project versions needs improvement."
"There are a few areas iGrafx which could improve, probably the biggest area would be to support iOS as well as PC, so clients don’t have to emulate PC on an iOS platform."
"One of the areas in the product with certain shortcomings where improvements are required includes the tool's reporting capabilities."
"I would like to see a lower price, although when used correctly, you can have a good return on your investment."
"Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a reseller in Mexico."
"It would be nice to have a Spanish user interface available to us."
"The solution could benefit from improvements to its interface. More specifically, when compared to other tools, the process modeling features lack symbols or object types that are used to represent the information or data within the process."
"It would be helpful to be able to do more analytics and generate reports on historical documents that have already been uploaded to the server."
"Visio is more user-friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product is a bit pricey."
"Usually, our company buys technical support from the Software AG site. We bought the technical support for the first year of usage for ARIS version 6 and 7. So, when we migrated to ARIS version 7, we bought support only for the first year. Then, we didn't use it the next year. Our experience was that we use it only one to three times during the first year. Therefore, there wasn't much value for us to buy this service because we have no problem with using ARIS after the first year."
"The product is inexpensive."
"You will never get a fixed price for this product because they will go in and ask you what kind of environment would you like to set up? How many people will you work with? How big is your organization? Today, they have a fixed price to say, "Okay, just to start the business area, buy two licenses for modeling and eight people that can look into the product." They have this kind of fixed price. It's 50,000 Danish Krone. If you divided that by about six, then you get the pricing in dollars. Still, when you are going out, negotiate and find the right price. You will never get a fixed price: "It costs this and, if you take ten of these, seven of these and eight of these, and then it costs this." No, you negotiate every time."
"It is well worth the investment in the enterprise."
"ARIS Express is free."
"ARIS enables you to start small and grow the use of the solution over time, although it's quite expensive. So if you want to start small, it's quite an investment for a small company."
"The setup cost and pricing depend on the license (Modeler, Viewer, Administrator)."
"I have heard that the solution's pricing is very competitive."
"The licensing part is one of the problems. Its licensing depends on the number of users, so it sometimes gets expensive."
"My company is trying to replace iGrafx because the license is a little bit expensive."
"Earlier, the licensing part was complex because there were so many modules and elements in the tool. Over the last one and a half years, a lot of work has gone into how the product has priced and positioned its tools in the market."
"Our license is a subscription-based model that is per user. The solution is not expensive, I believe a subscription-based model is $10 per user."

@Evgeny Belenky @Kaustubh Dani, Nowadays, most BPMs allow you to import and export BPMN models without much difficulty. especially if you are using the out-of-the-box solution. The model will remain intact on most occasions. @Evgeny Belenky @Kaustubh Dani,   Nowadays, most BPMs allow you to import and export BPMN models without much difficulty. especially if you are using the out-of-the-box solution.  The model will remain intact on most occasions. However, the main challenge will be the attributes/ metadata which may not find their way to the new BPM, i.e. the export and import attributes may not be described in the same manner.  Things can get a bit more complex if there is customization from the source of import (e.g. iGrafx).  If you are dealing with a small number of process models, you can test the export and import functionality and see what attributes/ metadata are missing.  For a bigger volume of the process model, it's more economical for the new BPM consultant to prepare a script to import the model and attributes. The export model and task attributes will need to fit into the import ARIS Function Allocation Diagram (FAD).
