Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

If customers want to change the color or the logo, they have to go through every page to verify everything is right. We have a strategic approach for the customer. I was involved in almost 100 sessions where the customers were looking for a one-time process visualization or one-time process mining, not for a long-term association with this tool. The customer's requirements are more tactical than strategic. We had some challenges during this time frame as I was with iGrafx, and electricity costs rose in Germany. One customer stopped a large deal because they had to reduce every non-invested investment due to the electricity bill rising by 500% to 800%.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The BPMN diagram is valuable. For our use case of transferring money from one account to another, the connections have to be done in the traditional financial ways. There are a lot of unexpected errors and a lot of instability with this kind of system, and we are using Camunda in order to have clear flows. With BPMN, I can show a flow to my business partner, and the business team can easily understand what's going on. The technical team can understand what the implementation is, and we can model different errors and the process for recovering from these errors."
"For an internal project, this is a solution that you can install and have up and running quite quickly."
"Because it's a complete solution, you can start modeling to automate processes."
"The most valuable feature of Camunda Platform is its Microservices architecture, which is easily integrable with APIs."
"We can easily define and deploy business processes. Camunda provides the tools that allow business people to design business processes. We don't have to have developers for it. It is so easy to use that our business people can go into the tool and model their business processes. We get time to do other things than just designing business processes."
"Camunda's process diagram creation and deployment is very easy."
"Based on other products, we've found the most appropriate results coming out from the Camunda BPM engine."
"We are system integrators, and the value of Camunda for us is that it's easy to integrate into the products and applications we provide for our customers."
"The solution is very stable."
"iGrafx is the most comprehensive way to have all the cross-feeds and the documents related to workflows, like cross-notes."
"We think iGrafx is well-priced, affordable; you don’t need a lot of license seats, and it has a good, free, downloadable iGrafx Viewer (akin to Adobe Reader)."
"One of the biggest plus points of the product stems from the fact that I have never seen any glitches in it."
"The solution has helped our organization because instead of writing long documentation for the shop floor, flow charts make it more attractive for the staff to follow up on and carry out procedures."
"Overall, the solution is very useful and has good features."
"If you need software to help you easily design processes, make simulations, build value stream mappings, which has some LEAN features, and DMAIC support, I strongly encourage you to go forward and buy iGrafx."
"The solution's most beneficial feature is the 360 approach, where documentation, process mining, simulation, and automation capabilities are in one solution."

Cons

"When you have a lot of processes running, it becomes very expensive very quickly."
"Camunda needs to improve its user interface for low-code development and provide more user interface options beyond the basic workflow."
"The migration strategy needs to be improved."
"Customization and tech stack could be up-to-date."
"As we experienced some difficulties in the beginning, deployment took almost a month."
"The latency of API could be decreased."
"It would be helpful to have more readily available use cases on the internet. Camunda's documentation feels less comprehensive."
"It is hard to say if this solution is scalable. We've contacted their support team on this, and sometimes it takes very long to get an answer from them."
"The look and feel, along with the ease of use of the solution's web modeling version, is an area with certain shortcomings."
"There are a few areas iGrafx which could improve, probably the biggest area would be to support iOS as well as PC, so clients don’t have to emulate PC on an iOS platform."
"I would love to see a template and shapes for customer journey mapping."
"It would be nice to have a Spanish user interface available to us."
"If customers want to change the color or the logo, they have to go through every page to verify everything is right."
"I used the single license product. The entire suite can manage complex organizations, linking it with ERP, but it is not so easy to link it to a new ERP."
"The price could be more competitive."
"Dragging and dropping shapes is not as user-friendly as in Visio. In Visio, it's very easy to work with shapes and in very few minutes you can plot a whole, multi swim-lane, cross-functional process."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Cheaper licensing and resources than competitors"
"When compared with the proprietary products, the pricing costs are much less, even though it is an enterprise edition."
"The price of the solution is reasonable."
"It is less cost-prohibitive than other solutions on the market. This solution was in our price range."
"We are using the open-source version, free of charge. We didn't bother with the enterprise features."
"I think Camunda BPM can improve their licensing costs. It isn't easy to find clients with Camunda BPM licenses mainly because it's quite expensive."
"There is a bit of scope for improvement in how the licensing and pricing are done. They are based on the number of processing instances you execute on the cluster... but on the self-hosted mode, the pricing model should be customized."
"Camunda is much cheaper."
"Our license is a subscription-based model that is per user. The solution is not expensive, I believe a subscription-based model is $10 per user."
"I have heard that the solution's pricing is very competitive."
"Earlier, the licensing part was complex because there were so many modules and elements in the tool. Over the last one and a half years, a lot of work has gone into how the product has priced and positioned its tools in the market."
"My company is trying to replace iGrafx because the license is a little bit expensive."
"The licensing part is one of the problems. Its licensing depends on the number of users, so it sometimes gets expensive."
