Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The best point about IBM Storage Protect is that it can use IBM tape environments, which we still use and will continue to use in the future."
"IBM Spectrum Protect is a scalable solution."
"We have been using it for several years, and it is quite reliable and predictable. We are quite comfortable with this solution. They're coming up with new features as well. It has good scalability, and it provides good integrations with business-critical applications or databases, such as SAP HANA. It works as expected, and we don't see any issues."
"The solution actually does a lot; it's really powerful, and the value of Spectrum Protect is it does everything: it does tape and it does disk, it's easy to migrate, you don't need any other software, and it's basically an all-in-one solution, which is its most valuable aspect."
"The solution is very stable. It is one of the most important features that we look for in a product before putting it into the market and when establishing a strategy with our customers."
"I have seen a lot of other backup products out there, and they are good, however, Spectrum Protect seems to encompass a broad range of things, and you can pretty much put it anywhere."
"Reliability: It has never had a problem with backups or restores. If you store something, it is there."
"By changing to this solution, we saved not only a lot of license costs, but also 450% storage cost (without space reduction techniques) plus 450% additional using space reduction techniques."
"We are able to slowly, but surely, consolidate all the backup infrastructure requirements with one product."
"Overall, this is a good product and it hasn't given us any problems."
"I haven't experienced any crashes while using the solution...Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The most valuable features include Sharepoint item-level restore and integration with the vSphere hypervisor."
"It has the ability to backup both DB2 (IBM's RDBMS) and HP-UX (HP's Unix OS)."
"The main purpose of this software suite (safely backup and restore main systems) is fully achieved."
"If others have a similar environment like we do, then I would suggest this solution for them."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."

Cons

"In terms of technical support, we had some troubles when we reached out to them, especially with IBM Europe."
"Ease of use. That has got to be the one thing that I routinely hear from clients and customers, that it's a little bit more difficult than it should be. What I'm finding is that IBM has heard that and they're responding with updated interfaces and things like that."
"This solution does not have good support for virtualization and a hyper-converged environment."
"It can be improved for large file systems with many files. Spectrum Protect can restore large files very well, but if you're restoring millions of little files, it is not as great. At one point, we tried to implement the VMware module with it, and it was awful and terrible. I don't know if that has improved. If it hasn't, this would be one big improvement."
"For Spectrum Protect Plus, I would like to see more enhanced reporting features and integration with Spectrum Protect."
"For the database side, it does not have object level recovery."
"There is room for improvement in the service aspect."
"They should have a proper technical support team serving the customers and get issues resolved earlier."
"Some security aspects in Data Protector could be improved."
"Many of our users complain about the GUI. You still need to rely on the command line interface."
"We're not satisfied with the robustness and stability of the software since Micro Focus took it in-house. The GUI is one thing they could improve. It's still a bit archaic. Data Protector needs a more functional, user-friendly GUI."
"The HPE Data Protector may not be enough to support your RPO/RTO needs, specifically for application integrated backups."
"When it comes to hardware support, HPE will help you in a minimal amount time. When in comes to software problems, you do not know when they will close your issues."
"We face challenges with its stability."
"I recommend not to implement Data Protector, as it is not friendly and you need to have a dedicated person to administer it."
"We have become frequent customers of the Data Protector technical support team because Data Protector does fairly regularly break."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Customers need to pay for licensing in order to use IBM Spectrum Protect. The customers that have been using it for a long time are okay and happy with it. From a cost point of view, it's better for them to renew their licenses than to go through the difficult process of changing a backup product in their environment, and migrate from one product to another."
"Spectrum Protect is not a cheap option."
"Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
"The license model that they have at IBM, which is due to volume, from a certain volume onward is not the right license model."
"It can be perceived as expensive since it is designed for enterprise use."
"We have been at our size for a few years. We are not really looking to battle the licensing costs, as this is our primary system."
"Regarding retro-compatibility of the product between versions, your data is always available and the ROI is unquestionable."
"Its licensing is complicated. It goes by CPUs, and it is pretty expensive as well."
"The license for the solution is very expensive compared to the other products in the market."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
