Saves time and offers zero-touch deployment but needs more training options
Pros and Cons
  • "I have been using Jamf Pro for a few years now, and I'm impressed with its functionality and ease of use."
  • "Training should be more accessible and cheaper."

What is our primary use case?

We use Jamf Pro to manage our devices in an education-based environment. We chose Jamf Pro over Jamf School as we needed the extra features it provided.

All our teaching staff has been issued Apple devices, and we manage these through Jamf.

All our classrooms have Apple devices to enhance teaching throughout the campus. It's a lot easier to push apps and manage devices through smart groups and overall helps the IT department focus on other challenges around the school.

Managing IT in a schooling environment is challenging at times, yet, with Jamf, we are able to have more control over our staff, students, and admin users.

How has it helped my organization?

I have been using Jamf Pro for a few years now, and I'm impressed with its functionality and ease of use. The platform offers great features for managing Apple devices within our organization, from Macs and iPads to iPhones. The interface is straightforward and intuitive, and the support team has been very responsive whenever we needed help.

The ability to automate tasks, deploy software, and configure settings across all our devices has made our IT team more efficient, saving us time and resources. Jamf Pro also provides excellent security features to help us protect our devices and data.

Overall, I highly recommend Jamf Pro for any organization that wants a reliable and comprehensive solution for managing their Apple devices.

What is most valuable?

We love the smart groups as they allow us to save time. There are many changes to systems at our school, and this has proven to be reliable in keeping up with them. We also love the ability to remotely manage devices by rebooting them.

One feature we love is the zero-touch deployment. There is no need for IT to touch the devices before we hand them over to the users. They are set up to their correct security groups. Users get all the apps they need and have a great customized welcome when setting up their accounts.

What needs improvement?

Training should be more accessible and cheaper. I completed my Jamf 200, and it was a fantastic experience. More users should be able to experience this to see the power behind Jamf and all the features they provide. Perhaps not for admins but for regular users, training is needed as well so that they can easily know how to manage and navigate through the self-service.

The next Jamf Pro update should include a feature for staff members to update their contact details and departments if needed.

Enables us to build a better inventory of our devices
Pros and Cons
  • "Jamf Pro has allowed us to make sure settings for our devices are easily installed so our end-users don't need to worry about a significant amount of steps for setup. We also use this to send applications to devices."
  • "We would love to see the ability to have settings apply to mobile devices on a time schedule. This would allow us to plan some tasks ahead of time."

What is our primary use case?

We are a kindergarten to eighth grade school district in Illinois and we have the need to manage our student and teacher devices. We manage a total of 1,600 devices between macOS laptops and Apple iPads. As students move between grade levels and application needs changes.

In addition, we need to make it easy so our students and teachers don't need to worry about making tech work, but instead can pick up and use devices without needing many tech skills. We also want to make sure multiple users in our organization have the ability to manage devices.

How has it helped my organization?

Jamf Pro has allowed us to make sure settings for our devices are easily installed so our end-users don't need to worry about a significant amount of steps for setup. We also use this to send applications to devices as well as the day-to-day usage of devices, we have a significant deployment that occurs every year with mobile devices for new students. We have also been able to use Jamf Pro to begin building a better inventory of our devices, have greater insight into patch management, and making sure our devices are up to date.

What is most valuable?

The ability to build configuration profiles for devices to send settings to devices and making it easy for our students and teachers to install applications has been the most valuable.

This has meant that when a teacher has an upcoming project, we can be sure applications that may be needed will be on the devices ahead of time so they can use their instructional time to teach. In addition, creating smart devices and user groups means our environment can be very flexible and make changes to our deployment without a significant amount of additional work.

What needs improvement?

We would love to see the ability to have settings apply to mobile devices on a time schedule. This would allow us to plan some tasks ahead of time. For example, we often have testing needs throughout the school year and the ability to do things like set a date to install an app and a date to remove an app would help us schedule upcoming tasks better. The same would go for things like web clips; we often share links with students for accessing content and being able to have this appear/disappear on a date would be helpful.

The initial setup was simple.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented in-house.

Its self-service feature has helped us minimize our support cases.
Pros and Cons
  • "Jamf Pro is the only product we can use at the moment because they are ahead of their competitors in zero-touch deployment for the end-user. Jamf Pro has a self-service feature that has helped us minimize our support cases. That's a feature the customers like very much."
  • "I'd like to see Jamf add Unified Endpoint Management, but it's not going to happen. It's too complex. We tried that for so many years, and no one can do this for Windows and macOS. It can be done with iOS, but that's not the case here. If you want device management for a real laptop operating system, you need two systems. They're very different."

What is our primary use case?

We use Jamf for zero-touch deployment and handling our customers' hardware and licenses. We use it for all the things you use device management or enterprise mobility management systems for, but it's not an inventory in our case. We use it mainly for zero-touch deployment with customers who operate worldwide and the headquarters can be in Sweden, England, or Germany, but the users are all over the world.

What is most valuable?

Jamf Pro is the only product we can use at the moment because they are ahead of their competitors in zero-touch deployment for the end-user. Jamf Pro has a self-service feature that has helped us minimize our support cases. That's a feature the customers like very much.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see Jamf add Unified Endpoint Management, but it's not going to happen. It's too complex. We tried that for so many years, and no one can do this for Windows and macOS. It can be done with iOS, but that's not the case here. If you want device management for a real laptop operating system, you need two systems. They're very different.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Jamf Pro for nearly seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The cloud version of Jamf Pro is extremely stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Jamf Pro is scalable. We have upwards of 50 customers, one of which has 200,000 users, and it's working, but our largest deployment is about 12,000 users.

How are customer service and support?

Level 3 support is okay, according to what I hear from that department. When it's a level 3 question, no one expects that we will have the answer in one or two days, but sometimes it can take one or two weeks or even a few months. Generally speaking, we get the support we need.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We've worked with Intune. It's much harder and takes more time to provide the same level of customer experience with Intune that we can offer with Jamf Pro. We can do a lot more scripting for the end-user with Jamf Pro than we can do with Intune, and it takes more time.

How was the initial setup?

For someone who's familiar with device management and designing this type of environment, I wouldn't say it's hard to set up Jamf. It can take anywhere between two days and one month, but that depends on the type and size of the customer.

What other advice do I have?

We've been in deployment for about 12 years, and we used open-source products initially, but now we need zero-day support for Apple, and the only good product we have found is Jamf. All others have been good for one or two years, but they stop delivering and maybe disappear.

Jamf is still there after all these years, and they continue to improve the product. With Intune, Microsoft decided not to offer device management for the macOS. Instead, they chose to have Intune integrate with Jamf.

Good security, fast deployment of patches, and easy inventory reporting
Pros and Cons
  • "Being able to easily deploy apps and patches to our client computers with minimal hands-on time from our techs has been huge."
  • "It would be nice if there was a built-in means of renaming computers that worked reliably."

What is our primary use case?

Initially, Jamf Pro was primarily used to manage our all-Mac computer lab classrooms for one of our departments. Jamf Pro replaced a mix of DeployStudio, Munki, WorkGroupManager, and a couple of other antiquated tools which I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Having one solution which replaced all those other moving parts has been a godsend. We are now expanding to managing individual faculty/staff Macs as well. It's going to be a bit of a process, but I'm excited to have Jamf Pro managing more and more of our assets.

How has it helped my organization?

Jamf Pro allows us to maintain an updated and consistent user experience in our classrooms while reducing the hands-on time required from our techs. Long gone are the days of running around (or even manually logging in via ARD) to update our classroom systems.

Jamf Pro is also helping our techs to more efficiently deploy new Macs to faculty and staff.  This is also a boon for security, as faculty and staff no longer need to have a secondary account for admin purposes - or worse, run as admin day-to-day.

What is most valuable?

Being able to easily deploy apps and patches to our client computers with minimal hands-on time from our techs has been huge. Being able to choose which apps and patches are deployed to which computer groups allows me to easily test on one batch of computers before pushing them out to the rest of our fleet.

The inventory reporting is also much more thorough than other solutions which just don't play nicely - or at least as nicely as they could/should - with Macs.  Due to the fact that it's all in the same system, we can get pretty granular about which apps/patches get pushed out to which hardware sets (Intel vs. M1, for example).

What needs improvement?

It would be nice if there was a built-in means of renaming computers that worked reliably.  This is a common problem I've heard many other Mac admins wish for as well.

While Jamf Pro *can* rename computers, there are weird priorities based on when the computers check-in that can overwrite the desired name - particularly if your organization does not use any of the rather limited naming conventions that Jamf *can* recognize. Manually naming computers is one thing our techs still have to do. It's not a deal-breaker, but not ideal.

Premium, stable solution used to back up a Mac fleet which is scaling
Pros and Cons
  • "My team use this solution to provide end-to-end support on our managed Mac fleet. This includes doing OS updates and upgrades, application deployments, configuration settings and outlining."

What is our primary use case?

My team use this solution to provide end-to-end support on our managed Mac fleet. This includes doing OS updates and upgrades, application deployments, configuration settings and outlining.

    What is most valuable?

Jamf Pro has been the best solution in the market to manage Mac fleets for our organization.

    What needs improvement?

This is an advanced solution which is ahead than any other vendor. There are no particular areas for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used this solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We opted for the cloud version of this solution as it is scalable. We are currently supporting 1000 to 1500 devices and we will be scaling this to 6000 Mac devices.

How are customer service and support?

When we have needed assistance, the technical support has been good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have previously used open source solutions to manage Mac fleets but they became outdated and support was limited. We did a product evaluation for three or four different products, and found Jamf Pro the best in the market. Previously we were using Puppet and Monkey.

    How was the initial setup?

It was combination of being straightforward and complex. It took some time to set up the environment because we had to migrate the configurations and applications to Jamf. This took three months.

    What about the implementation team?

We had a trusted partner to do this migration, but our team worked with them for three months.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have signed a licensing contract for three years. There is an option to buy an annual license subscription, but we opted for three years as it came with a 25% or 30% discount.

What other advice do I have?

Jamf Pro are the trusted partners for Apple. So they are the first one who implement any technical changes that Apple is making. Jamf is the first product to ensure those changes are getting replicated or getting affected and getting implemented actually in their product.

Responsive support, assists in content filtering, easy to use, and has helped to streamline our process
    Pros and Cons
    • "We are able to manage our full fleet of devices and can simply integrate with all of our systems."
    • "I would like to see tighter integration with Jamf Protect in the future releases of Jamf Pro."

What is our primary use case?

We use Jamf to manage our school's new 1:1 inventory of devices. Everything is in one place for our OS X and iOS deployments.

We are now starting to integrate with certificates for our new wireless system and it has been wonderful to work with the teams at Jamf. Jamf Pro has helped us to have the best management for all of our devices.

I was a manager of iOS devices in the past, and it was extremely cumbersome to use some of the other software out there. Jamf has made it so that I don't have to worry about anything.

How has it helped my organization?

Jamf Pro has streamlined and organized the way we do business. We are able to manage our full fleet of devices and can simply integrate with all of our systems. Jamf has made this a very easy task and has been amazing.

With Jamf, we are able to give specific access to our local admins so that they can manage devices without the help of our more senior admins. We can allow some things and not others. And, we now have a solid idea of where all of our devices are and who has and does not have them.

    What is most valuable?

With our system being for students, one of the most important pieces of Jamf is to make sure that we are supplying a filter for all of them. In Jamf, I am able to see when an application is removed and then push it right back out. We are using Umbrella and if it is deleted by a student then Jamf knows and re-deploys it almost immediately.

Jamf has additional features that are helpful.

There is an easy configuration that we can set in the root of Jamf Pro to manage our Jamf Connect clients. It means that we do not have to get to much more granular, building config profiles that allow the keys right from Jamf Pro.

    What needs improvement?

I would like to see tighter integration with Jamf Protect in the future releases of Jamf Pro. It has been a great system that allows us to know what is happening on all of our OS X Devices.

Jamf as a whole has come a long way and maybe more of an integration between the entire suite of Jamf products would be helpful.

Login info from Jamf Connect in the Jamf dashboard could be helpful but for the most part, we have nothing to complain about with our Jamf system.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for the last four years and if I had know about it sooner, I would have been using it for much longer.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This system is extremely stable and we have it now hosted in Jamf Cloud. That was a Solid Decision

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is fully scalable and extremely simple. We scaled up from 600 to 1,200 devices over the summer and nothing changed. It was phenomenal.

How are customer service and technical support?

They have amazing customer support that is very responsive. When we need assistance, it is only a phone call or email away.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously tried MaaS360 and a product by Meraki.

I was provided insight into Jamf and the full suite of products, and the ease is far greater.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was a little tricky, coming in with zero experience, but the support of Jamf and colleagues was there and we got it to a great place fairly quickly.

    What about the implementation team?

We deployed with an in-house team.

    What was our ROI?

This is the best value for a system that I am deeply involved with on a daily basis.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options before choosing Jamf.

What other advice do I have?

Being a School district, this is certainly the way to go. Even at the corporate level, the ease of integration with ABM and ASM is amazing and extremely helpful.

Great support, allows for blocking certain settings, and helps manage Apple devices
    Pros and Cons
    • "It's as easy as procuring the licensing for the apps and then setting it to the volume purchasing back in Jamf."
    • "Apple does block certain actions from happening or disallows Jamf from making certain changes."

What is our primary use case?

We use this program to manage all of our Apple devices in our different locations. We have Zoom rooms set up that use iPads that we configure to stay in single app mode so users are unable to change anything.

We also use it to manage the kiosk we have set up when we have guests. We have also implemented a BYOD policy where we have users sign up with Jamf and it allows us to push apps from our business to their phones. It's nice. We also make sure they select the "personally-owned" option so we don't accidentally take full control of their device.

How has it helped my organization?

It has made our day-to-day job so much easier since implementing Jamf Pro at our company. We have a simple to use one-stop-shop for all our Apple devices. We can manage all our Macbooks and see what apps are installed or even see what macOS version they are on. Then we can remotely force install the newest version of the macOS and either allow the user to upgrade on their own or force it to upgrade then and there. Jamf Pro is great for lost devices as well, they have a "Lost Mode" command that will ping their last known location and even make a noise.

    What is most valuable?

The first most valuable feature I found was the ability to simply push out applications to devices, Mac or iPads/iPhones. (We also have the ability to manage desktops and AppleTV devices if needed). It's as easy as procuring the licensing for the apps and then setting it to the volume purchasing back in Jamf.

Another great feature is the ability to set all different kinds of restrictions on the devices. We can block certain settings, the App Store, or even specific apps! We can even do the opposite and only allow selected apps.

    What needs improvement?

It's really hard to figure out anything that needs to be improved in Jamf. They do everything so well and they are constantly updating the system.

Since we are in the cloud, it just updates automatically and little bugs/glitches are always being fixed.

Apple does block certain actions from happening or disallows Jamf from making certain changes. This is the only true issue I can see, which is not truly a Jamf issue. I would just hope that one day Apple will allow Jamf to make changes to the screen sharing changes so that way we can fully support remote employees.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for almost two years now.

How are customer service and support?

Support is great. They have multiple ways to contact them and are fairly responsive. They will also follow up a couple of times before closing the ticket due to no responses.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Customizable with good patch management and great automated enrollment
    Pros and Cons
    • "The self-service is awesome for empowering end-users, especially if you don't allow admin rights."
    • "The self Service UI needs some real improvement; they recently revamped the app, but I don't know if those changes have been for the better."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Jamf Pro to manage all of our macOS, iOS, iPad OS, and tvOS devices, which totals ~200 devices.

We have just recently started using Jamf Protect and hoping to start using Jamf Connect. We are a small cybersecurity firm and all of our users are Mac users. We don't have any Windows end-user clients in our environment. Our users don't have admin rights on their systems, so all changes to the systems are being pushed out and managed via the Jamf platform. Jamf Protect is a recent purchase, however, it has been very useful in getting greater insights into the built-in Apple security tools.

How has it helped my organization?

Primarily, it has enabled us to manage all of these devices without the need for a large IT staff. We are a small organization and trying to manage these devices without a tool like Jamf would require significantly more staff or we would need to rely on end-users to manage certain things themselves. This has especially been useful as everyone has started remote work. Also, Jamf has made it possible to ensure that all of our endpoints are compliant with our IT and InfoSec policies, which is crucial in our industry.

    What is most valuable?

The managed settings via configuration profiles are fantastic for enforcing certain settings, especially now that you can customize the payloads.

The patch management has been a killer feature, and it's getting even better now that Jamf is adding so many new feeds.

The self-service is awesome for empowering end-users, especially if you don't allow admin rights (however, the UI still needs a lot of improvement).

The automated enrollment/Apple Business Manager integration has made the device onboarding process so much more efficient than the traditional imaging/manual enrollment process.

    What needs improvement?

The self Service UI needs some real improvement; they recently revamped the app, but I don't know if those changes have been for the better.

The App Store deployments are incredibly unreliable, however, I think this might be more of an Apple issue than a Jamf issue.

The patch feeds are quite extensive. I would like to see the ability to create custom patch definitions and host those directly in Jamf Pro.

It's not specific to the product, however, I wish Jamf was more communicative/responsive to the feature requests section of Jamf Nation. They don't need to approve all of the requests, but offering response/feedback/status would be greatly appreciated by the community.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using and managed a Jamf Pro instance for about 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product and regular releases have been incredibly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

If you are using the cloud service, then it would be extremely scalable. Larger on-prem installs may need to look at clustering servers for load balancing or software package storage.

How are customer service and technical support?

Generally, the support team is great, however, it's clear that they've been a bit overwhelmed throughout the COVID pandemic.

    What about the implementation team?

Implementation was done with the assistance of a Jamf jumpstart; the folks performing the jumpstart were extremely knowledgeable.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd advise that new users check out the Jamf Business Plan, which is user-based licensing. It is now available to any existing customers and makes it much more affordable for getting the suite of Jamf products.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
