Easy to manage and scale and has logging features
Pros and Cons
  • "I found logging and management features the most valuable in Palo Alto Networks Panorama. Another good feature of the product is that it lets you define global firewall policies and templates."
  • "Storage in Palo Alto Networks Panorama needs improvement. My company also experienced deployment issues when the product was first installed, particularly when binding with the firewall. It's not as user-friendly because not everyone can deploy it without some knowledge."

What is our primary use case?

We provide Palo Alto Networks Panorama to customers in the education and government niches, for example, for state and defense accounts. The product is for logging and log management.

What is most valuable?

I found logging and management features the most valuable in Palo Alto Networks Panorama.

Another good feature of the product is that it lets you define global firewall policies and templates. For example, if you have standard procedures, you can create a single template and apply it to all your firewalls. This feature is attractive to many users.

I also like that Palo Alto Networks Panorama is easy to configure and manage.

What needs improvement?

Storage in Palo Alto Networks Panorama needs improvement.

My company also experienced deployment issues when the product was first installed, particularly when binding with the firewall. It's not as user-friendly because not everyone can deploy it without some knowledge.

Updating Palo Alto Networks Panorama was also a bit challenging when upgrading your firewall, so that's another area for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've worked with Palo Alto Networks Panorama for the last three or four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Palo Alto Networks Panorama is a stable product, but sometimes, the patch creates some issues, so it's a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Regarding scalability, Palo Alto Networks Panorama is a scalable solution. You can scale it whenever you want. You can add storage. Scaling it is easy, so it's a nine out of ten for me.

How are customer service and support?

Palo Alto Networks Panorama technical support is good. Regarding response time, it depends if you're getting partner support or direct support from Palo Alto Networks.

Sometimes you need to wait a maximum of four hours to receive support, and sometimes, it just takes half an hour. It also depends on the type of ticket you open. If it's a critical ticket, you'll get a call from technical support within fifteen to twenty minutes.

I also like that Palo Alto Networks extended support to distributors, where you can raise a ticket directly with a distributor.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've used AlgoSec, and compared to Palo Alto Networks Panorama, AlgoSec supports other OEM firewalls, which means you can configure Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco, and other firewalls on it. In contrast, Palo Alto Networks Panorama only supports Palo Alto Networks devices, which is a drawback.

Otherwise, if you compare Palo Alto Networks Panorama with other products, such as Fortinet and Checkpoint, feature-wise, Palo Alto Networks Panorama is more complete. In contrast, Checkpoint and Fortinet are only thirty to thirty-five percent complete.

If not for the OEM firewall restrictions, I'd rate Palo Alto Networks Panorama as ten out of ten compared to other products.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Palo Alto Networks Panorama could be pretty easy if you've had some training. It's not like you can go and do it and find it easy without a guide or training. Before implementing the product, you'll need at least one to two weeks of training because it'll be complicated to go hands-on without some Palo Alto Networks Panorama training.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing for Palo Alto Networks Panorama is always high. If you're going to sell the product, you always have to talk about the technology because it should be about the solution rather than the price, or else you'll lose potential customers.

What other advice do I have?

My company works with Palo Alto Networks Panorama, including other Palo Alto Networks solutions, such as MDR, NGFW, and SOAR.

My company is a system integrator rather than the end customer. My company provides and sells Palo Alto Networks Panorama to end customers.

Palo Alto Networks Panorama is deployed on-premises, particularly by customers in the government.

A state data center where my company deployed Palo Alto Networks Panorama had fifteen thousand to eighteen thousand users. The number of firewalls was eighty, with two Palo Alto Networks systems.

My rating for Palo Alto Networks Panorama is nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A straightforward setup with a user-friendly interface
Pros and Cons
  • "The interface is very easy to use. You can do most jobs from one single console."
  • "The general customer feedback is when saving the configuration, it takes a long time. That needs to be fixed. The troubleshooting, the debugging part is also a little bit of a pain. It's not user-friendly on the interface to do our debugging when comparing it with other firewalls, like Forcepoint."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case of this solution is to have as a management tool for firewalls.

What is most valuable?

The interface is very easy to use. You can do most jobs from one single console.

What needs improvement?

The general customer feedback is when saving the configuration, it takes a long time. That needs to be fixed. The troubleshooting, the debugging part is also a little bit of a pain. It's not user-friendly on the interface to do our debugging when comparing it with other firewalls, like Forcepoint.

It would be nice to have a real-time traffic monitoring console similar to Forcepoint firewalls where you can see in real-time instead of having to keep on refreshing, or maybe a command on the console where you are able to see the traffic.

The solution needs to work on speeding up the committing time.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been installing the solution for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable. If you have a large enterprise network, where you have 30 or 40 firewalls, you can see everything and you're able to administer all the firewalls on one single console. We typically install the solution for medium-sized to enterprise-level businesses.

How are customer service and technical support?

We're not fully satisfied with technical support. Sometimes it's hard to get in touch with them. In regards to the first level of support engineers, it could be nice to know that they had more expert experience on the device so they can immediately resolve issues.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend the solution. I find Palo Alto is the easiest product to deploy.

I would rate the solution eight out of ten.

Provides good security, is efficient with great technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "This is an efficient solution."
  • "The solution is quite expensive."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use cases are for web security, antivirus, and remote browsing. I'm a senior security specialist and we are integrators.

What is most valuable?

The product is very efficient.

What needs improvement?

This is a relatively expensive solution and I wouldn't recommend it for a stand-alone deployment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is generally stable. There can be issues but it's generally related to power supply issues a company might have.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good. They're very responsive and always have engineers available to help.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup takes around one week and is complex. All other firewall configurations are easier than Check Point. If you face any configuration issue, the only solution is to contact the Check Point team. Deployment generally requires an engineer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing costs are cheaper than Palo Alto but more than other solutions. It's quite expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this solution unless you're in a location with a lot of power cuts. If you work for a software company, I'll always recommend this solution. If you're looking for a stand-alone deployment, then I would recommend Fortinet. I rate this solution nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Secure, performs well, and is simple to use
Pros and Cons
  • "Everything about the reporting and everything about Palo Alto Networks Panorama is good."
  • "There is always room for improvement in anything."

What is our primary use case?

We use Palo Alto firewalls, for our perimeter security. It is our perimeter security product, which we use as our perimeter security firewall. As a firewall should, protect us and our organization at the perimeter.

What is most valuable?

It's an excellent product. It's doing its job, and we like it. The ease of use is quite nice. Everything about the reporting and everything about Palo Alto Networks Panorama is good.

What needs improvement?

Everyone, I suppose, would like the price to be improved. Price is always a good thing to change.

There is always room for improvement in anything. But I couldn't really comment on that off the top of my head.

In terms of updates, I believe everything is in order. That is not an issue for me.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Palo Alto Networks Panorama for five months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Palo Alto Networks Panorama is 100 percent stable. We have it running in HA status, obviously, for failover, but It's extremely stable. There are no complaints.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Palo Alto Networks Panorama is scalable.

We have a large organization. We are a retail company, with approximately 4000 users who are protected by this firewall.

How are customer service and support?

I have never contacted technical support personally. We do outsource our support to another company. When there are issues, they are responsible for resolving them.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We use their product called, Cortex XDR.

We use an onboard, a custom CRM platform that we created in-house. At the moment, we do not use a commercially available one.

I have been with my current company for five months. And we were using checkpoints as our perimeter security when I first joined, and we moved to the Palo Alto Panorama platform. And it's a fantastic product; we love it. As an organization, it has been very well written.

How was the initial setup?

I wasn't involved in the installation because, as I previously stated, I just started working for my current organization.

I wasn't directly involved in the transition, but it went smoothly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I couldn't comment on price as I am not really involved in the commercial side of the business.

I am not aware of the licensing fees.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I am aware of XSOAR, but we haven't had any dealing with it yet. We are on a journey to potentially onboard that within our environment. But, at this point, we don't have, the budget for it.

What other advice do I have?

It's doing its job for us. Since we cut it out, from Checkpoint to Palo Alto, everything has improved noticeably. I recommend it.

I would rate Palo Alto Networks Panorama a nine out of ten.

Easy to deploy and manage devices, quite stable, but is expensive and not user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "The management and the deployment features are most valuable. We can easily deploy and manage the devices. We can do fast deployments without moving from our office and by just providing a short description to the end-user about how to install the physical device."
  • "It is very hard to understand the platform. It is not easy and user-friendly. You need a lot of experience to use Panorama. It is very complex, and you must know exactly what to do. I would like to have a more user-friendly product. FortiManager is comparatively very easy to use. It would be good if Panorama improves in terms of user-friendliness. It is also harder to use than Palo Alto Firewalls."

What is our primary use case?

I worked for a system integrator, and some of our clients  asked us to manage their firewalls. They have a large number of sites all around the world. One of them has got 25 sites, and the other one has got 13 sites. So, we deployed Panorama in our DataCenter, and we managed the gateway for our customers with Panorama.

What is most valuable?

The management and the deployment features are most valuable. We can easily deploy and manage the devices. We can do fast deployments without moving from our office and by just providing a short description to the end-user about how to install the physical device.
With Panorama you are able to manage a large number of firewall and to simplify change and incident management process .
With Panorama, firewall rules may be  managed mixing preconfigured templates (common on all/some firewalls) and more specific rules
From Panorama Dashboard you have an immediate view about the status of all the firewall deployed.

What needs improvement?

It is quite hard to understand the platform. It is not easy and user-friendly. You need some experience and the proper technincal training  to use Panorama without risks.
It is very complex, and you must know exactly what to do.
The bigger problem is that Panorama Dashboard Logic is quite different than PanOS firewall Dashboard.
The second problem is that you dont have wizards or template .You need to build your enviroment from zero on your own incurring in possibile configuration or logic errors.

I would like to have a more user-friendly and simple to use product .
For istance FortiManager is comparatively much more easier  to use and understand.
Palo Alto Firewall too are Really easier to manage than Panorama.

Panorama Logging and reporting features are quite good ( like PaloAlto Firewall) but not the best on the market ( for istance Checkpoint SmartEvent is still far better)

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is quite stable based on my experience. I did not have any big issues regarding the operating system.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is quite easy to scale with Panorama. It is more for a medium or big enterprise. To manage an environment from Panorama, you must have people with high skills. Its cost is not suitable for a couple of gateways only.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have three levels of Palo Alto support. I also have email support in the Italian language. They provide very good support levels.

How was the initial setup?

I did not install Panorama from scratch. Palo Alto Gateway is quite easy to deploy and has a decent setup.

In terms of maintenance, it doesn't require too much effort. We usually check the best practices from their website. We update the Panorama server according to the best practices and the compatibility with the gateway.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Panorama price is quite high (comparing with other Firewall management suites)

What other advice do I have?

We have used it in the past for logging and reporting, but now we have another third-party product to manage the logs.

I would recommend Panorama for managing a large-sized or medium-sized network. To manage a center with a lot of devices or cloud services, Panorama is useful.

I would rate Palo Alto Networks Panorama a seven out of 10.

Efficient firewall management with a user-friendly interface
Pros and Cons
  • "It allows administrators to manage all firewalls from a single interface, reducing the time and effort required for configuration."
  • "It would be beneficial to improve the capabilities of Panorama to handle logs more efficiently, potentially reducing the need for additional local collectors. Adding more predefined dashboards as features would enhance the monitoring and reporting capabilities."

What is our primary use case?

It works as a centralized management solution for Palo Alto Networks firewalls. It allows administrators to manage all firewalls from a single interface, reducing the time and effort required for configuration. Panorama also provides pre-configurations and allows for easy deployment of configuration rules to multiple firewalls. Administrators can also leverage Panorama to change smart IPS rules to Panorama IPS rules, allowing for customization and flexibility in managing security signatures. It also simplifies the process of performing upgrades and complex tasks, making it a valuable tool for efficient firewall management.

What needs improvement?

If a large company uses Panorama as a log collector, it may require setting up multiple local collector devices due to potential limitations in handling firewall logs. It would be beneficial to improve the capabilities of Panorama to handle logs more efficiently, potentially reducing the need for additional local collectors. Adding more predefined dashboards as features would enhance the monitoring and reporting capabilities. The iOPS tools, which are currently offered separately, could be integrated into Panorama to eliminate the need for an additional dashboard or GUI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with it for nearly four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable and reliable solution.

How are customer service and support?

They offer two types of support: Partner Enabled Support and Premium Support. With Partner Enabled Support, partners can open cases with distributors who then relay them to Palo Alto. This process can be time-consuming, leading to customer dissatisfaction. Premium Support allows customers to directly open cases with Palo Alto, bypassing the distributor, but it comes at a higher cost. The majority of high-level clients opt for Partner Enabled Support, despite its drawbacks.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Among the various high-level firewalls that we previously used, including Check Point and Cisco, Palo Alto Networks Panorama stands out for its stability and ease of configuration. It provides a user-friendly interface that simplifies the process of managing firewall rules.

How was the initial setup?

Configuring firewall rules is generally straightforward and user-friendly. Certain advanced tasks, such as setting up local collectors and changing log types or indexing can be challenging for end-users. In such cases, assistance from partner companies or Palo Alto Support may be required.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Palo Alto products are generally priced higher compared to their competitors. Its higher price is justified by the reliability, scalability, and extensive feature set that is offered.

What other advice do I have?

The suitability of Palo Alto products and their pricing depends on the size and the requirements of the company. It would not be a good fit for smaller companies with a limited number of firewalls. For larger companies with multiple clusters or complex configurations, Palo Alto products are highly recommended due to their comprehensive range of features and capabilities. I would rate it nine out of ten.

Allows users to see the endpoint status; provides good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "What's most valuable in Palo Alto Networks Panorama is that it allows us to see the status on the network side, particularly on the endpoint, because we also use it for the internal network."
  • "As the cybersecurity threats have become more aggressive these days, Palo Alto Networks Panorama can still be improved, particularly on the security side, for example, more network management, and penetration test. Improving the security feature for internal endpoints is needed in the solution."

What is most valuable?

What's most valuable in Palo Alto Networks Panorama is that it allows us to see the status on the network side, particularly on the endpoint, because we also use it for the internal network.

What needs improvement?

As the cybersecurity threats have become more aggressive these days, Palo Alto Networks Panorama can still be improved, particularly on the security side, for example, more network management, and penetration test. Improving the security feature for internal endpoints is needed in the solution.

What I'd like to see in the next release of Palo Alto Networks Panorama is more training and more marketing.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been distributing Palo Alto Networks Panorama for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Palo Alto Networks Panorama is a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Palo Alto Networks Panorama is a scalable solution, and we don't have any issues scaling it.

How are customer service and support?

For me, the technical support for Palo Alto Networks Panorama is good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for Palo Alto Networks Panorama is not complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My company pays for the licensing cost of Palo Alto Networks Panorama yearly, and it's all-inclusive, so there's no need to pay extra for some features.

What other advice do I have?

My company has a partnership with Palo Alto Networks and it is a reseller of Palo Alto Networks Panorama.

The version of Palo Alto Networks Panorama being used would depend on the hardware side and the client, but I cannot remember the exact version. We are on a new version: version eight if I'm not mistaken.

My company has a team for the maintenance of the solution.

My rating for Palo Alto Networks Panorama is eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
