Highly flexible but lacks some balance between the cloud and on-premise versions
Pros and Cons
  • "There is essentially one solution for every industry within Oracle — you won't require a third-party solution."
  • "Oracle E-Business Suite uses an old technology (Forms), which is Java-based."

What is most valuable?

The flexibility to scale up is very good. Regardless of the customer, customization is not as complicated as it is in SAP or even ISS and other products.

There is a range of modules available in Oracle which you can switch on as you progress in your organization. You don't have to necessarily take a lot of time to kickstart the implementation. You can just start with basic HR, finance, and purchasing. Then, later on, you can extend the application landscape with more modules as you progress. There is essentially one solution for every industry within Oracle — you won't require a third-party solution. Still, if you wish to use a third-party solution because the price is too high or because of a specific technical requirement, then you are free to do so.

What needs improvement?

I currently work for a company that specializes in aircraft maintenance. There used to be a module in Oracle called CMRO. Now, the current situation is that they are pretty much closing down that module. Roughly eight or nine years back when they started it, they were anticipating a good number of customers but the reality turned out to be different — that's why they closed down that module. That created a lot of trouble for a lot of companies. Truthfully speaking, that is the reason I moved towards ISS. Although it's not as popular as Oracle or SAP, ISS focuses on industries. ISS provides us with an industry-based solution, geared toward aviation, field service management, or manufacturing for example.

Oracle E-Business Suite uses an old technology (Forms), which is Java-based. If you're using a functionality that is based on Oracle Forms, then the client machine needs to download an applet in order to use that function. Often I've encountered, during support issues, that the client machine, if it is a little obsolete or an older version, the Java versions cause trouble. Wherein if you look at the modern cloud perspective or modern software in general, it's mostly web or browser-based. That's one thing that Oracle should consider on-prem.

There is still a huge amount of customers who are on on-prem. Upgrades should have a business case. I don't want to upgrade just because Oracle has come up with a new version — I should have some benefits. We are one of those customers who are not interested in shifting to the cloud for various reasons. Because of this, we have to live with this old Forms technology. Oracle should try to offer a balance between both versions instead of pushing customers to the cloud. This seems to be a strategy that both SAP and Oracle follow.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle E-Business Suite for more than one year. In total, I have more than 10 years of experience with Oracle.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle E-Business Suite is definitely stable.

How are customer service and support?

Regarding their technical support, my personal experience over a period of two to three years is that you'll begin to notice a pattern regarding what time you should raise a service request so that it reaches the right place. Whether it goes to India or to Egypt — these are the two most popular centers for Oracle support. But if you manage to hit the right people, the support is there. 70 to 80 percent of the time, I receive a solution to my problems simply through the technical repository — within the portal itself. I prefer to do it like this rather than by creating a service request and waiting for a response from a potentially inexperience staff member. I'd rather just depend on the documentation. The documentation is very rich. The Oracle community is big.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was quite straightforward. I have worked with SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, and now I'm using ISS. With all of them, you need to have some basic expertise before you jump into the pool, otherwise, your life could be complicated. If you have that basic guidance and experience, it's not complicated when it comes to Oracle. Still, there are prerequisites for each of them — especially when it comes to Oracle. You need to have had hands-on experience with PL/SQL or developer experience with Java.

The best part about Oracle is that it has openly published its documentation on its implementation checklist — how to follow, configure, etc. For this reason, it's much easier to implement Oracle compared to ISS or SAP, for example. This is due to the fact that they insist that you need to follow their documentation and it's not publicly available everywhere. This makes things a bit easier when it comes to Oracle.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you're buying a license, support is roughly 22% of the price of the whole product. So, in the first year, you'll definitely get support. Some companies, over a period of time, try to knock off the Oracle support costs because it just keeps growing. Every year, according to their published price, it will increase from three to five percent from the last year. Now, imagine you bought a product worth 1.5 billion; what would be the support cost in the first year? And then plus 5%, plus 5% — it goes on, and on. You'll come to a point where you feel you're wasting money because support is support whether I am paying for five users or 500 users.

There is a solution for all of your current problems in Oracle E-Business Suite, but the constraint is the license. I'll give you a live example. Let's say I bought an employee self-service. What I would get is a bunch of licenses that I can use on the web version on my local internet. But with the current model of digitalization, you know that the employees would prefer to have some sort of mobile app or at least a desktop site. So, if I want that to happen, then I'd need to buy another set of licenses. The same self-service on the mobile version.

These are the pain points with Oracle. The license is normalized or broken down to such a level that it becomes a pain. Regarding a new customer, unless he's been using this solution for two or three years, he won't get used to these licenses. There is a good chance that he'd become exploited by Oracle's account managers in terms of licenses. Oracle's licenses are not straightforward.

Personally, I have worked on several projects where I have had to help customers understand Oracle licensing — it's not simple in SAP either. There are pros and cons to both solutions. Sometimes it could be beneficial and sometimes it's troublesome. That is something I feel that Oracle should try to simplify.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of seven.

Oracle E-Business Suite is not for small businesses as, over a period of time, you will incur a huge cost when it comes to hosting. It's not just about application licensing, there is also hosting infrastructure, etc. It's not the functionality that's the problem for small entities, it's the overall cost. Smaller companies should go for something like AppDynamics, SAP Business, or NetSuite.

Oracle is best suited for large organizations — from medium to large. It's a great solution for companies who grow quickly and need the best scalability possible. Unless you have a minimum user base of 3,000, you shouldn't be using Oracle.

Oracle is for medium to large-sized companies that are projected to grow in one or two years. Otherwise, it will become a pain point for you because the IT expenses will shoot through the roof. As a product, as a functionality, if you check this particular prerequisite, I would definitely recommend it.

An ERP solution that can handle human resources, supply chain, business intelligence, and payrolls
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Oracle E-Business Suite is the customization."
  • "The document that supports the Oracle E-Business Suite regarding the installation and upgrading is long compared to other products and needs to be enhanced."

What is our primary use case?

Oracle E-Business Suite is an ERP solution produced by Oracle. As with any other ERP system, it can handle any organization and business portal, including human resources, financials, supply chain, business intelligence, payrolls, etc. It's a very powerful tool as an ERP system.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Oracle E-Business Suite is the customization. Compared to other competitor systems, you can find a larger customization scale in the solution, usually in all layers, starting from the database, reports, and modules. The solution can create custom modules from scratch.

What needs improvement?

The document that supports the Oracle E-Business Suite regarding the installation and upgrading is long compared to other products and needs to be enhanced. Some components of Oracle E-Business Suite, like the database, GDK, and WebLogic, stop at a certain point, which is not its last version.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle E-Business Suite for three to four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We may encounter some bugs with the solution, which we usually deal with easily by referring to Oracle support.

I rate Oracle E-Business Suite an eight out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution's scalability has many layers. If you want to scale the number of application nodes, you have some steps. Scaling the database nodes takes a lot of time and extra effort.

I rate Oracle E-Business Suite a seven out of ten for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

The solution’s customer support is good.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup is average because you cannot directly install the version you need. Firstly, you should install all the database versions, take some steps to enable online patching, use the ETCC script, upgrade the database, and upgrade the application to the version you need.

What about the implementation team?

If you work in a comfortable environment and have deadlines, the solution can be deployed in two weeks.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate Oracle E-Business Suite a nine out of ten.

An unstable suite solution for maintenance and procurement

What is our primary use case?

Our company has both our renewable and thermal fleets through the E-Business Suite. This includes planned maintenance for the thermal fleet, equipment operation and maintenance, and procurement of necessary spare parts through inventory management. Finance users also leverage the suite for invoicing, purchase order processing, and other financial tasks. It's a comprehensive solution that even supports our budgeting needs.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes, when you prepare your rules, the robustness of the rules is essential. Allowing excessive user modifications can lead to situations where only specific scenarios are considered, neglecting others. This can cause difficulties for users.

SAP doesn't allow changes in their processes beyond the limit. While this might restrict some flexibility, it fosters repeatability in system behavior, which users eventually adapt to. In Oracle E-Business Suite, we've faced situations where a procurement workflow appears stuck in someone's inbox, even though it's not there. This discrepancy is potentially caused by configuration or feature issues.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle E-Business Suite as an end user for one year.

How was the initial setup?

We over-implemented and customized Oracle, leading to stability issues. It's like buying a BMW and driving it for 20 years. Tomorrow, you shift to Tesla, and you still want to drive it like you drove a BMW. So, you start modifying Tesla for BMW's pleasure. Modifying it excessively compromises its inherent capabilities. Our process owners, accustomed to SAP, sought similar workflows in Oracle despite its different approach. The software has inherent rules; tweaking them too much can cause instability. Additionally, our system integrator, E&Y, might have over-engineered processes, making them fragile. Unlike our 9-month SAP implementation with a stable product, Oracle took two years with issues.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated both SAP and Oracle. We chose Oracle because of SAP's higher cost. Additionally, SAP no longer offers on-premise licenses, focusing solely on Software as a Service (SaaS), making it a bit more costier to operate regularly.

What other advice do I have?

Oracle E-Business Suite is reasonably good. It offers a licensing model, which offers long-term cost advantages compared to the cloud-based license provided by SAP. As an end user, my role was very limited. In 2011, when we implemented SAP, I was heavily involved because I was heading operations and maintenance. We had inventory management, budgeting, and everything integrated seamlessly from that perspective.

Overall, I rate the solution a six out of ten.

I primarily use E-Business Suite for trading and procurement.

What is most valuable?

E-Business Suite's best features are the standard process, the table dictionary, and the ability to work with the SQL language to correlate data.

What needs improvement?

E-Business Suite's pricing could be lower. In the next release, E-Business Suite should include the HIS information system and 360-degree feedback.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using E-Business Suite for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

E-Business Suite is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Is easy to implement and is stable and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "The implementation of Oracle E-Business Suite is easy."
  • "They should have a nicer way to handle very high volumes of data because we deal with really high volumes, and sometimes, we end up with performance issues."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for our interfaces and to run APIs.

What is most valuable?

The implementation of Oracle E-Business Suite is easy.

What needs improvement?

They should have a nicer way to handle very high volumes of data because we deal with really high volumes, and sometimes, we end up with performance issues.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Oracle products since 2005.

Oracle E-Business Suite is currently deployed on-premises, but we hope to move it to the cloud soon.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of this solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. We have hundreds of users.

How was the initial setup?

We have a separate team that manages the installation, and I expect that it was a straightforward process for them.

We have about 15 to 20 people on-site and off-shore for maintenance, deployment, patches, etc.

What other advice do I have?

Prepare yourself before you start the installation because sometimes you can end up in a mess. You don't want to have to uninstall everything and re-install it. So, read the manual carefully, prepare the infrastructure and hardware properly, and then slowly go for the installation and deployment.

Overall, I'd give Oracle E-Business Suite a rating of eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Robust, complete, and offer useful configuration capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "The on-premise is very similar to the cloud version."
  • "It's very dependent on integration with other products,."

What is our primary use case?

Principally, the solution is used for financial issues like accounting, payroll, or inventory.

What is most valuable?

The on-premise is very similar to the cloud version.

It's robust and strong for sizeable enterprises that deal with big numbers daily and monthly. We have tried it with maybe 10,000, 20,000 alternate sections daily.

The solution has a good structure. You can personalize it and configure it.

If you have expertise with the product or Oracle, you will find the setup to be straightforward.

It's a very complete product.

Technical support is useful.

What needs improvement?

The solution is very expensive. The price is high for smaller organizations. Enterprises might find it to be okay.

It's very dependent on integration with other products, especially with Oracle, for an OIC solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used the solution for 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is very scalable. With the Oracle solution, there are multiple model options from production, to manufacturing, to transport. It's great for warehouse administration and warehouse management. It can scale to meet the needs of large operations.

How are customer service and support?

Oracle support is pretty basic. They constantly make patches, improve software security and stability problems, and add new solutions. It's good overall, the support we get directly from Oracle.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

It's application-specific in terms of setup. If you don't have the expertise, it's very, very hard. It's necessary to have this experience with this software. If you don't have the experience, maybe will be very hard to implement. If you do, it won't be that bad.

You don't need a huge team for maintenance. It's very stable throughout the year.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's a pricey product. However, it is meant more for enterprises.

What other advice do I have?

We are Oracle partners.

While we are partners, we've dealt with all different versions. The latest is 12.2.7. We have clients that have an on-premise deployment, and we can help them move to the cloud.

It's important to find a good innovation partner, especially if there are plans to move to the cloud. Maybe the lifetime of E-Business Suite is maybe ten years for maximum. That's something to consider if you are coming up to that date.

Overall, it's a very good solution. I'd rate it ten out of ten.

Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle E-Business Suite's most valuable feature is the information that it provides. For example, it's good to know the AR due date and the receipt of the products that you have sold. It is a good solution overall for enterprise management."
  • "Oracle E-Business Suite could improve the tables. When we remove some of them sometimes they cloud the modules into one. It becomes a little difficult to segregate."

What is our primary use case?

I used Oracle E-Business Suite for supply chain management, such as order and inventory management, and for receivables.

What is most valuable?

Oracle E-Business Suite's most valuable feature is the information that it provides. For example, it's good to know the AR due date and the receipt of the products that you have sold. It is a good solution overall for enterprise management.

What needs improvement?

Oracle E-Business Suite could improve the tables. When we remove some of them sometimes they cloud the modules into one. It becomes a little difficult to segregate.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle E-Business Suite for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle E-Business Suite is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

As the Oracle E-Business Suite updates to newer versions the solution scales.

We have approximately 50 people using this solution in the previous company I worked at.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used the support for Oracle E-Business Suite.

What about the implementation team?

We require 15 people for the maintenance and deployment of the solution for one project. The people needed include managers, developers, administrators, and engineers.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Oracle E-Business Suite an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Perfect data management
Pros and Cons
  • "E-Business Suite's best features are BAT functionality, flexibility, configurability, and integration with Oracle Database."
  • "E-Business Suite's user experience and interface could be improved."

What is most valuable?

E-Business Suite's best features are BAT functionality, flexibility, configurability, and integration with Oracle Database.

What needs improvement?

E-Business Suite's user experience and interface could be improved. There are also some issues related to the cloud version, such as less powerful flexibility that prevents easy customization and integration. In the future, I would like E-Business Suite to include more self-service applications and no-code/low-code capabilities for users to create simple applications.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using E-Business Suite since 2004.

How are customer service and support?

Oracle's support could be quicker and more responsive.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy and takes six to twelve months - about eight to nine on average.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Compared to other vendors like SAP or Microsoft, the prices for Oracle are reasonable, but they could always be lower.

What other advice do I have?

I especially like E-Business Suite's data management functionality - I would say it provides perfect data management inside the app. I would advise anybody wanting to implement E-Business Suite to try to understand and implement standard functionality first before doing any customization. I would rate E-Business Suite as eight out of ten.
