Good support, reasonable price, and easy to set up health checks and run scans
Pros and Cons
  • "It is user-friendly. It is easy to set up health checks within PRTG and use scans. It is like a self-service tool, and anyone can configure their own settings within PRTG."
  • "In our organization, we encounter performance issues with our PRTG probe service. I saw documentation from the vendor or Paessler mentioning that there are limitations for WMI sensors. Other than that, we are okay with PRTG."

What is our primary use case?

We are using this solution for the health check of our infrastructure.

What is most valuable?

It is user-friendly. It is easy to set up health checks within PRTG and use scans. It is like a self-service tool, and anyone can configure their own settings within PRTG.

What needs improvement?

In our organization, we encounter performance issues with our PRTG probe service. I saw documentation from the vendor or Paessler mentioning that there are limitations for WMI sensors. Other than that, we are okay with PRTG.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for almost two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is fine. We have between 300 to 500 people. We have plans to increase its usage.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is good. We can easily reach out to the vendor or the Paessler support team.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

When I started with my company, they were already using PRTG and SCOM. PRTG is more user-friendly than SCOM. I prefer PRTG over SCOM, but it also depends on the use case.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing for PRTG in our case is reasonable because we have a lot of applications to monitor within PRTG. It is not that expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate PRTG Network Monitor a nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Allows For Better Monitoring of Devices and Helps to Identify Issues
Pros and Cons
  • "Ease of set-up – it is quick and easy to add a probe and start collecting data from a device."
  • "PRTG access works best from the web GUI. There are dedicated apps on Windows/Android/iOS, but they are slow and don’t work as well as the web GUI."

What is most valuable?

  • Network monitoring - it's able to collect lots of detailed information on network devices and network traffic. The graphing functions allow it to view current and history of the device.
  • Ease of set-up – it is quick and easy to add a probe and start collecting data from a device.

How has it helped my organization?

Allows us to monitor devices better, and helps up to identify issues with the monitored device using current or historical data from PRTG.

What needs improvement?

PRTG access works best from the web GUI. There are dedicated apps on Windows/Android/iOS, but they are slow and don’t work as well as the web GUI.

Licenses are very expensive, so I would like to see cheaper licensing.

For how long have I used the solution?

Over three years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No, it was quick and easy to set-up and deploy. But if you have lots of devices to set-up, then it can take a long time.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The only issues we had were self-inflicted. We massively exceeded the recommended number of probes on the collecting server and this caused the server to crash and stop collecting data. Once we reduced the number of probes, then the PRTG was stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues with scalability until you reach license or hardware limitations. Then you need to install new servers and have different licensing. Have a plan and idea of what you want to monitor before implementation.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Not much interaction with customer service, but whenever I did contact them they were helpful.

Technical Support:

Technical support was responsive and helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used WhatsUp for network monitoring, but it was more simplistic and did not provide the depth of monitoring that PRTG did.

How was the initial setup?

It was quick and easy to setup new devices.

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

What was our ROI?

Figures unknown.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My advice is to be clear with what you want to monitor before you start configuring. PRTG has a large number of probes that can be used to monitor devices, so have a good plan of what you want to monitor. Otherwise it is easy to monitor devices with lots of probes and exceed license allowance or hardware limitations. PRTG licenses are expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No, PRTG had already been selected as our monitoring tool.

What other advice do I have?

There is a free trial installation of PRTG available, which allows monitoring with 100 probes. Install on a server to gain some experience of PRTG and learn what it can do.

Stable and easy to use for a nontechnical person as well
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a user-friendly solution."
  • "They should work on syncing the solution with Gmail."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution to monitor the availability of devices and check if ping has generated ICMP requests.

What needs improvement?

They should work on syncing the solution with Gmail. Also, they should add a feature to monitor the bandwidths of different devices. In addition, it should be possible for us to check the connectivity of the devices via DNS servers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than two weeks.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution but depends on the license version. We have about 1000 devices integrated with the solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used OpManager. We switched to PRTG as per our customer's request.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup was straightforward. I had to enable FTP to copy the server and then install the solution over the server. Further, I was able to access it remotely via a web browser.

What about the implementation team?

I implemented the solution myself.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution as a nine. It is very user-friendly. I have downloaded it to my home devices. I receive an alarm when the network of any of the devices drops down. I can also add users by giving them static IPs. It is easy for a nontechnical person to use it as well. It can be used both for personal and enterprise purposes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using PRTG Network Monitor for approximately two and a half years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

PRTG Network Monitor is scalable.

We have approximately 200 to 250 devices that are being used with PRTG Network Monitor.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used other solutions previously but they did not compare in features with that of PRTG Network Monitor.

How was the initial setup?

The setup of PRTG Network Monitor is simple. There are five or six steps to complete it.

We have more than two locations and for that two locations' network connectivities, we are using PRTG Network Monitor. For example, we monitor firewalls, switches, and for ISPs. For servers, we are using the Zabbix.

What about the implementation team?

One person is monitoring everything using PRTG Network Monitor. We have been providing support to our customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are using the premium version of PRTG Network Monitor. The price of the solution is a bit higher than competitors but it is worth the extra money. However, it would be helpful if the price was lower.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have compared other tools to PRTG Network Monitor. I found that PRTG Network Monitor is more user-friendly than the others I compared.

What other advice do I have?

I rate PRTG Network Monitor a seven out of ten.

Web-based, friendly, easy to use, good graphs, and easy to implement
Pros and Cons
  • "The up-to-date graphs and the history are very good."
  • "The free version only gives us 100 free sensors to use. It would be nice if there was double that."

What is our primary use case?

Our clients use this solution to see if the network is up and running, for pings and services such as emails and disk space.

How has it helped my organization?

I use it for monitoring since I am the system admin to keep things up. Overall, the information it gave didn't offer any suggestions to change anything.

What is most valuable?

The up-to-date graphs and the history are very good.

They keep adding services, such as MS SQL monitoring, and email monitoring to keep the different parts of the e-mails going.

The implementation is easy, initially.

Also, the servicing of Linux and Windows Operating Systems are useful.

What needs improvement?

The free version only gives us 100 free sensors to use. It would be nice if there was double that.

The additional services such as MS SQL and email monitoring took a bit of work, so I would like to see it easier to do.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been acquainted with PRTG Network Monitor for approximately seven years.

I have used it for a customer in the last 12 months.

We are using the latest version. I keep them updated.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable product and I have not experienced any issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Our clients are not that large. It's single-server monitoring for some systems. We didn't have to scale it.

Our clients are small businesses, with under 100 seats.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not needed to contact technical support, but the forums are pretty good.

We did not use technical support because it was pretty straightforward. I kept my monitoring pretty simplistic, and I didn't try to do anything extra that would cause more angst and set things up.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We haven't used a monitoring system before.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. It was easy to set up and implement.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

To have the additional features costs a lot. It's too much. If it was half the price, we would purchase more.

All monitoring systems are close to the same pricing scheme.

What other advice do I have?

For others who are interested in using this solution, I would recommend it. Please use it, it's good. It's very friendly, easy to use, and it's web-based, which means you don't have to be logged into a server to get something done.

Also, the updates are easy to do, just double click and away it went. On occasion, updates had to be done from the server, but that wasn't very often.

I would rate PRTG Network Monitor a nine out of ten.

A flexible solution that allows us to monitor many aspects of IT
Pros and Cons
  • "It is very flexible, and we can monitor many aspects of IT as well as ERP and CRM services. It has a very powerful interface and APIs for customization."
  • "Its price can be better. Its price is a problem for us because it is in dollars, and there is a high conversion rate. In terms of new features, it can have BGP monitoring. It should also have a dashboard and maps editor."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for some internet providers and educational institutes.

What is most valuable?

It is very flexible, and we can monitor many aspects of IT as well as ERP and CRM services. It has a very powerful interface and APIs for customization.

What needs improvement?

Its price can be better. Its price is a problem for us because it is in dollars, and there is a high conversion rate.

In terms of new features, it can have BGP monitoring. It should also have a dashboard and maps editor.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution since 2014.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is installed on a Windows Server, and its stability is very nice.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is good. For on-premises deployments, the scalability depends on the hardware. For cloud deployments, the scalability depends on the number of servers.

Around 50% of our clients are small organizations and around 20% of our clients are big organizations.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is pretty good. As a reseller, we get fairly good support from them, and we also sell support services for our clients.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy. An average implementation takes one to two hours.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

They have a roadmap in which they have described all the features for the upcoming releases. This roadmap is available on their portal.

I would recommend this solution. I would rate PRTG Network Monitor a ten out of ten.
