For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s stability an eight out of ten. We face some stability issues, but it might be just problems around bandwidth accessibility since I am geographically dispersed from the rest of my team.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The tool is highly scalable. We use it on a large scale. We have a couple of hundred users. Almost 50% to 60% of the users’ time is spent using the tool.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using mobile phones to connect with our team before. We started using Skype for Business because it was a business-delivered product.

What other advice do I have?

The solution can be very effective for geographically dispersed technical support organizations. Overall, I rate the product a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

A product that offers its users good connectivity over voice calls
Pros and Cons
  • "I rate the solution's stability a nine on a scale where one is not stable and ten is very stable...I rate the solution's initial setup a nine on a scale where one is difficult, and ten is easy."
  • "Skype's overall connectivity functionality or ability is one area with room for improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We are a software company, so we communicate via Skype with our end customers, including product companies.

What is most valuable?

Screen share is one of the features of the solution I like the most. The product also offers good connectivity over voice calls.

What needs improvement?

When I compare Skype for business with Microsoft Teams, I feel that Microsoft Teams has picked up more in recent years since it offers end-to-end connectivity and also connects with various systems making it more than just a messaging or calling tool. Microsoft Teams offers me a repository to store data and is also connected to SharePoint. Skype is a smaller application compared to Microsoft teams, offering wider scope to its uses. Skype's overall connectivity functionality or ability is one area with room for improvement.

Our organization recommends using Microsoft Teams as much as possible since it is closely tied to our operating system, making it easy to connect or sync with our local systems. The ability to create repositories, the ease with which it can be accessed, and the ease with which we can collaborate with our peer groups to work on data make it much more advanced than Skype.

For how long have I used the solution?

In our company, we use Skype for Business with our customers. Basically, we are just users of the product. Also, we have been using the product for around five years now. As of now, I don't remember the product's version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution's stability a nine on a scale where one is not stable and ten is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the solution's scalability an eight on a scale where one is not scalable and ten is very scalable. The scalability of the solution can be improved.

How are customer service and support?

Since I work in an organization with an IT team that takes care of the technical part, I have never had an opportunity to interact with Skype's technical support team. Owing to the fact that we never had any issues with the product from a technical support perspective, I rate the solution a seven or eight.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

I rate the solution's initial setup a nine on a scale where one is difficult, and ten is easy.

The deployment model is a corporate version which is used within corporate organizations.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Since I am using a corporate account for which I have not made any payments, I would not be able to speak about the solution's price.

What other advice do I have?

I want to tell others who plan to use the solution that though it can increase the scope, they should first probably compare it with Microsoft Teams. Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Integrates well, simple deppoyment, and good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Skype for Business is that it has many other tools that you can be integrated with it. It makes the meetings more interactive."
  • "The challenge we had with Skype for Business was with the signing in when a user signed out and when signing in back in again, there was a bit of a problem. We switched from Skype for Business to Teams, and Teams never had that sign-in problem once we did the switch."

What is our primary use case?

Skype for Business is used for overall communication and meetings. Our organization is spread across the globe, it makes it easier for people to meet virtually.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Skype for Business is that it has many other tools that you can be integrated with it. It makes the meetings more interactive.

What needs improvement?

The challenge we had with Skype for Business was with the signing in when a user signed out and when signing in back in again, there was a bit of a problem. We switched from Skype for Business to Teams, and Teams never had that sign-in problem once we did the switch.

The interface of Skype for Business could be better. It was not very user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Skype for Business for approximately two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of Skype for Business is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Skype for Business is scalable.

We had a license for every user, but the majorly of the people who do meetings, are not so many. We would have meetings for all the staff, and approximately 80 people would attend. However, on average 20 to 30 people would often use it during meetings.

How are customer service and support?

The support from Skype for Business is good.

How was the initial setup?

Skype for Business was simple to implement, but it was a little more involved than Microsoft Teams.

What about the implementation team?

The solution is very simple to implement. It is similar to any other Windows application. There was no need for assistance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We had a license for every one of our users to use Skype for Business. The license we used was part of an overall Microsoft license package.

What other advice do I have?

We switched now from Skype for Business to Teams and the experience has been better.

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate Skype for Business an eight out of ten.

Convenient and easy to use but could be more collaborative
Pros and Cons
  • "People are now able to virtually collaborate with their staff and have a conference call. We don't need a phone line to make that conference call and we are saving on that. People are able to share their presentations. Also, they can chat using the Skype"
  • "We are looking for a more collaborative tool, not only in terms of virtual meetings but also for teams to collaborate, share a document, work together, and all those types of things."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for our internal communication.

What is most valuable?

In terms of what I have found most valuable - with COVID people are now able to virtually collaborate with their staff and have a conference call. We don't need a phone line to make that conference call and we are saving on that. People are able to share their presentations. Also, they can chat using the Skype. It's not a great tool, but it meets our need right now.

What needs improvement?

We are looking for a more collaborative tool, not only in terms of virtual meetings but also for teams to collaborate, share a document, work together, and all those types of things.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Skype for Business from right when Skype introduced it - many years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For the last two years, we have been using it and it has been stable. People are not getting dropped out from meetings. We are able to have 50 users in a meeting. It is something that is available as part of our enterprise agreement with Microsoft, so there is no additional cost.

How are customer service and support?

As part of our EA, we have support. Usually we also have a dedicated account manager for any Microsoft product, not just the Skype, if we are not able to get support. We never had any problems with Skype. We never had to call in for technical support since it was set up and running. Periodically, we continue to apply patches and upgrades. So far, we never had any issues and there was never a need to make a call to Microsoft to resolve any issue, but we do have support in place, and if we don't get prompt response, then we have the account manager to escalate and, usually, the account manager is able to assign a technical lead expert to help us resolve the issue in a quick manner.

What other advice do I have?

I think Skype for Business has been discontinued, so I don't think anybody should be interested in implementing it. Microsoft is not selling it anymore, but the product is still supported until the end of 2023.

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Skype for Business a six.

Provides good video quality, and can be used for video calls at work
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution’s video quality is fine."
  • "The solution should improve the chat and add more flexibility to make a call."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution for video calls at work.

What is most valuable?

The solution’s video quality is fine.

What needs improvement?

The solution has very limited features. The solution should improve the chat and add more flexibility to make a call.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Skype for Business for around five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution a seven out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution has high scalability.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used Microsoft Teams. I switched to Skype for Business because of security issues.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of the solution is difficult, but it's because of some limitations my company has regarding security issues.

What other advice do I have?

A maximum of 20 people can be on the same call. I would recommend the solution to other users because you can use it on-premises.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Reliable, offers seamless integrations, and has many features
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the seamless integration to local telecommunications."
  • "I don't recall coming across any big missing features."

What is our primary use case?

This is our primary application for virtual meetings. However, we have MS Teams and the company is positioned to use more of MS Teams going forward. Skype is more of a chat application nowadays.

What is most valuable?

I like the seamless integration to local telecommunications. We can call local numbers in different countries, and pretty much call anyone who is within the same system using Skype. If I'm not mistaken, it can also add people to my list (from my personal contacts) that are using Skype.

What needs improvement?

It does everything I really need it to do. I don't recall coming across any big missing features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used Skype for Business for as long as I can remember. I started using that more than five years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable. I haven't experienced any problems while I've been on a call, for example, or in a meeting. It's pretty reliable and the performance is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I've never had the chance to really scale it. I can't speak to how well it can expand.

We have about 1,000 people using the solution right now.

How are customer service and support?

I've never really dealt with technical support. I can't speak to how they are in terms of helpfulness or responsiveness.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use MS Teams. I also have some experience with Cisco.

When I came to this company, they were using Skype, so I adopted it. I didn't migrate over to something else with any other purpose in mind.

How was the initial setup?

I'm merely a user of Skype. I did not handle the initial setup.

What about the implementation team?

My colleague handled the implementation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not sure what the licensing costs are for the product. It's not an aspect of the solution that I handle.

What other advice do I have?

We do have a partnership with Microsoft and are integrators.

The company will push out the newest version and purchase it. I'm pretty sure we are using the latest version.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

I would recommend the solution to other users and companies.

I'd advise users to try to familiarize themselves with the features so that they can get the most out of Skype.

Communication and collaboration tool with multi-device setup, but lacks dynamic file updating
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the best features of Skype for Business is that you can set it up on mobile phones, and you can set it up on laptops. You can connect to the tool from anywhere."
  • "The tool needs to have a dynamic file updating feature, so people you share a file with could update the file dynamically, all at once, all at the same time."

What is our primary use case?

Skype for Business was one of the prime tools we used to communicate with vendors. We also used it for communicating with other employees internally, within our organization.

What is most valuable?

We had a very good experience with Skype for Business. It was a helpful tool, and one of the best tools I've ever worked with. It's just that our organization is now starting to use Microsoft Teams, so people are diverted into that tool slowly and steadily. We can organize meetings and send across files on it, e.g. there are a lot of options you can use on Microsoft Teams. Both Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams have multiple advantages.

One of the best features of Skype for Business is that you can set it up on mobile phones, and you can set it up on laptops. You can connect to the tool from anywhere.

What needs improvement?

Dynamic file updating is a feature I haven't seen on Skype for Business. It's an area for improvement, e.g. I've seen that feature on Microsoft Teams, but not on this tool. If I send one file and shared it with 10 resources, for example, those 10 resources can update that file dynamically all at once, at the same time. Being able to update a file dynamically, by more than one resource, is one of the best features that isn't available on Skype for Business.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Skype for Business is a stable tool. It's just that our organization has moved to Microsoft Teams, but I found Skype for Business to be stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is present in Skype for Business, e.g. you can use it to participate in one-to-one chats, and you can have a call with multiple people on it. If you have an organization with 3,000 people, you can manage it very nicely on Skype for Business. The tool can also scale from 10,000 to 20,000 users. It's a scalable tool.

What other advice do I have?

We have Skype for Business in our organization, and our last usage of it was six months ago.

I'm unable to comment on the initial setup of Skype for Business, because the installation was done by our IT team. Our team just used the tool. My work is on IT infrastructure, and Skype for Business is one of the communication tools that our local IT team provided to us. Our IT team took care of the installation.

Everyone in our organization used Skype for Business. Everyone was using the same thing, because there was no other option that time. Slowly and steadily, people went on to use Microsoft Teams, and I started using Zoom for meetings, because once the pandemic came in, everything was remote. Our organization wanted a tool which had better quality, or could be a better way to communicate, so we went onto Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Prior to those two tools, we used Skype for Business.

I'm rating Skype for Business seven out of ten. It's a really good solution.

Calling features and screen sharing are good features; sound quality and clarity need improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "The calling features are most valuable, especially now as we are working remotely."
  • "There are issues with the bandwidth, particularly for external meetings,"

What is our primary use case?

Skype is mainly used for our internal meetings. We have it set up for all the different groups in the company, whether it's my IFC, the marketing team, pre-sales team, senior leadership, etc. We're using the product at least once a day and everybody in the company uses it. We're customers of Skype and I'm the manager of global business development.

What is most valuable?

The calling features are the most valuable, especially now as we are working remotely  because of this pandemic. The screen sharing aspect is also a valuable feature. For example, if we need to explain something internally or deliver a presentation internally, being able to share the screen is a huge benefit. We also use Google Meet for that, so it's dual usage for us.

What needs improvement?

We have issues with the Skype bandwidth, particularly for external meetings, which is why we also use Google Meet. Also, the sound quality of Skype is not great - there is a constant background humming noise. Clarity is essential, especially in our planning meetings. We can't rely on Skype for that and that's why we sometimes use Google Meet instead.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been at this company for three months and that's how long I've been using the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The system is somewhat stable although there's the issue of the background noise and it's not always clear who is talking. Following the flow of a meeting can become a bit tricky when a lot of people are involved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable in that we can sometimes have up to 30 people participating in a meeting.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We currently use both Skype and Google Meet. Google Meet is very user friendly with good voice quality. We can record our calls and then share screens when we're making a presentation. It's an easier solution than Skype even though we use both platforms.
For our external client meetings we use Google Meet and internally we use Skype.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution a six out of 10.
