Scalable backup solution, but its customer service support service needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "It is easy to configure."
  • "It takes much time to verify and consolidate images for backups."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as backup software for our clients' on-premises servers.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable features are backup, recovery, and cloud computing. We can extract the recovery details and then boot up the server. Another best feature is the ease of configuration.

What needs improvement?

Firstly, the application takes much time to verify and consolidate images for backups. The process could be faster in comparison to other backup solutions. Secondly, the troubleshooting part needs improvement as well. Presently, one needs to plug into the computer and then extract the logs in case of a problem.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It could be a more stable solution in terms of cloud usage. As for a cloud server, the controller of the physical server needs to be present for the backup running.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. We have at most ten solution users at the moment.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team needs to be faster in their responses. I have raised tickets four to five times about the upgrades, the user panel, and unknown backup issues. They take a lot of time to resolve the query. It's very time-consuming.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. All you need to do is protect the computer online and then the whole server, which you will save as the backup store after setting up the networking and the local admin, where ShadowProtect will use it virtually. After that, authenticate to the backup store, then install it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In comparison to other vendors, it is a low-cost solution. The licensing cost is easily adjustable based on the number of computers subscribing to the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution to others. If you want an entry-level backup for your on-premises servers, it is a suitable solution. I rate it a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Global deduplication, stable, and flexible licensing options
Pros and Cons
  • "Global deduplication is the best feature of this solution."
  • "The solution can improve by allowing older versions to support the latest version of the OS."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used as an on-premises infrastructure backup solution, so we can take the backups of the servers, storage servers, file servers and endpoints, and the virtualization layer.

What is most valuable?

Global deduplication is the best feature of this solution. The solution is also open for the BMR recovery for any point of failure with bare-metal hardware, like any other OEM, we can restore all the data.

What needs improvement?

What I have noticed is that UDP can support some test versions of the OS like Linux 6.0 and macOS also 10.0, and 12.0, but sometimes with customers that are using older infrastructure, the UDP doesn't support the infrastructure. It's very challenging for the deployment aspect. The solution can improve by allowing older versions to support the latest version of the OS.

I would like to have the three licenses for Arcserve appliance, Arcserve Cloud, and Arcserve UDP bundled into one license.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable and can be integrated with AWS and other cloud platforms. The solution also supports older cloud types so BC to DR replication as a secondary option is also possible.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is excellent.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is extremely easy. The deployment took half a day.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation is completed by our organization for our clients.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is based on the number of sockets. We use a four-socket price that includes two servers and the cost is $4,375. The solution licensing is not cheap but I would say it's reasonable compared to other solutions.

What other advice do I have?

I give the solution ten out of ten.

This solution offers one dashboard to manage the BC con, disaster recovery plan, DR solution, and backup as well as different licensing options, unlike other OEM products.

We are the system integrators for our clients, so we design the solution as per the customer's requirements.

We provide several solutions options to our clients such as Druva inSync, Druva Phoenix, and Arcserve UDP with the specifications and the client makes a decision based on their requirements.

I would advise potential users to first be clear on whether they are going to use it as a backup solution for compliance purposes, just wanting to take the backups of files and servers, or for instant recovery. The IQ and RPO discussion with our customers usually takes 30 minutes.

I recommend this solution.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

It offers good deduplication, however, there are other solutions offering similar functionality too. Hence, it's not a differentiator but a must have.

A quick and scalable solution that provides backup features and has a responsive support team
Pros and Cons
  • "The product provides instant and virtual standbys."
  • "The time to backup servers that sit in DMZ must be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I am using the tool for backup, replication, and Instant VMs.

What is most valuable?

The product provides instant and virtual standbys.

What needs improvement?

The time to backup servers that sit in DMZ must be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the product’s stability an eight out of ten. The product must make the updates of the backend database easier.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the product’s scalability an eight out of ten. Four people use the solution in my organization.

How are customer service and support?

The support is good. The support personnel may not solve all problems quickly, but they're good at getting back to us.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used a different solution before. We could restore our files quickly, but if we had to restore the whole server, it would take ages, or they have to send us the restoration on a drive. In Arcserve, we can quickly create an instant VM.

What about the implementation team?

The deployment is done by a consultant.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

People who want to buy the appliance must get as much storage as possible. Storage is a premium on the appliances. Overall, I rate the tool an eight out of ten.

A scalable and stable product that needs to consider offering a single console to its users
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a very stable solution...It is a scalable solution."
  • "One of the biggest drawbacks of Arcserve UDP is that it does not have a single console, making it an area that needs to be considered for improvement."

What is our primary use case?

Most of the use cases associated with Arcserve UDP are related to virtual machine backup, for which we use it sometimes, though it is not the fastest one. Arcserve UDP is mostly used as a backup in SAP HANA. Even now, since Arcserve can't trigger the backup from the console, we decided to replace it with Commvault in our company. Still, in our company, we use Arcserve UDP for a few customers for virtual machine backup, as it works perfectly fine with no issues.

What is most valuable?

The best feature of the product is its simple environment, making it simple for users to take care of the configuration part. In our company, though we have found a few issues with Arcserve UDP, most of them crop up from the lack of features provided in the solution.

What needs improvement?

There are two products under Arcserve. There are no single consoles for Arcserve. Arcserve introduced a backup solution and UDP, because of which there are still issues since our customers use the legacy agent-based backup, like SQL backup or Oracle backup, and when our company uses the backup from Arcserve, we need to select two consoles, which becomes an issue. Arcserve functions perfectly only if you use a basic virtual environment or a fully virtualized environment. One of the biggest drawbacks of Arcserve UDP is that it does not have a single console, making it an area that needs to be considered for improvement.

Arcserve doesn't consider its own backup tool, which is a very powerful product, and it may be because most people know only about Arcserve UDP and don't know how to work on the backup product from Arcserve.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Arcserve UDP since 2015. My company has a partnership with Arcserve.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution.

I can say that more than fifty of my company's customers in Sri Lanka use Arcserve UDP.

How are customer service and support?

Contacting Arcserve's technical support depends on a user's situation. Two years ago, I saw that when Arcserve's technical support operated from India, there were some issues in connection with the support provided for Arcserve UDP 6.5, which I believe stemmed from the lack of product knowledge. Nowadays, I feel that Arcserve has fixed the issues related to the operations of its technical support team.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of the solution is very easy since it is easy to configure, making everything fine.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the product can be considered to be reasonable enough for the Asian region.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

My company chose Arcserve UDP or other products in the market since it is simple to use.

What other advice do I have?

Arcserve UDP can be used in a simple environment in most cases. I have a technical background, but I can say that Arcserve doesn't have any proper videos for its new users. If you want to install Veeam, there are plenty of videos related to how to install Veeam. If I want to add a data store or some ESXi in Arcserve, I can't find any videos to help me with the same on YouTube. In general, there are no online materials for learning about the product, which might not be helpful for the implementation engineers, but in our company, we need some straightforward online video materials about the product to help us with our pre-sales.

I rate the overall product a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

A stable and scalable traditional enterprise backup solution that has excellent features
Pros and Cons
  • "Our customers are happy with the product’s functionality."
  • "The product is not user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We have a customer who is into manufacturing. They have multiple plants and a central server for backup. It’s a hybrid environment. It is a traditional enterprise backup software.

What is most valuable?

We have upgraded our customer’s product to the latest version. Our customers have been using it for the last six to seven years. Our customers are happy with the product’s functionality.

What needs improvement?

The product is not user-friendly. Younger users prefer tools that are very intuitive and more graphical. The users operating the system must be trained properly. It is not a plug-and-play solution. It will be really useful if the solution provides disaster recovery features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for 30 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution’s stability is good. I rate it an eight and a half or nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We had no issues with the tool’s scalability. I rate it an eight and a half or nine out of ten. I recommend the solution for enterprises.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support takes time to respond. I believe it is because the team has less resources. However, the solution they provide is comprehensive. I rate the technical support around seven to eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Both Acronis and Arcserve UDP are good solutions. We sell Acronis to people who need applications on the cloud. For Arcserve UDP, we target hybrid and on-premise users. We don't have much experience with Acronis.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is not complex, but it could be better. Many organizations provide intuitive interfaces that are more friendlier. Some companies are on the cloud, but larger companies still have their servers on-premise. For newer applications, organizations move to the cloud.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I rate the product’s pricing a six out of ten. The solution is not very expensive, but it is not cheap. Commvault and Veritas are more expensive. Arcserve UDP is moderately priced.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the tool an eight out of ten.

Has a virtual standby feature, works out of the box, and is user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "Arcserve has a feature called virtual standby (VSB), which has been very helpful because I already have a hot standby copy of my critical infrastructure. If something breaks, I can spin up that virtual standby copy in less than five minutes and ensure that my data is available to everyone and that business continuity is maintained."
  • "We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release."

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution for disaster recovery and continuous availability. For example, if my DC goes down, I can spin up VMs almost instantaneously on my DR site. Plus, I have an Arcserve High Availability or Arcserve Continuous Availability license that helps me to keep a real-time in-sync copy of my SQL database on which my CRM tool runs. So, I can maintain a highly available SQL DB, one on-premises and one in the cloud.

What is most valuable?

Arcserve has a feature called virtual standby (VSB), which has been very helpful because I already have a hot standby copy of my critical infrastructure. If something breaks, I can spin up that virtual standby copy in less than five minutes and ensure that my data is available to everyone and that business continuity is maintained.

What needs improvement?

We are looking at scaling up to the cloud and using immutable copies on the cloud. Arcserve UDP 8.0 does have the immutable feature supporting AWS, but I'm looking for multi-cloud support. So, I'm waiting for Arcserve to release that in the next release.

I would like to see support for SAP HANA in UDP. We are looking for block-level backup or byte-level backup of SAP HANA because we are looking at migrating from the existing SQL to SAP HANA.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using it for almost eight years now.

The primary copy is on the on-premises storage, and the secondary copy is on AWS.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Arcserve UDP is pretty much stable, and as a result, it's a good go-to solution. I've been using it for the last eight years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. If you have good infrastructure underneath the software, then, it's a very scalable solution. It's scalable in the sense that it can protect from 100 VMs to 1,000 VMs.

Also, the backups that I need to be retained for six years or seven years for compliance scale out very well on the cloud. So, I'm really happy with that.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate technical support at nine on a scale from one to ten. They have provided me with workarounds and solutions in a timely manner.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Arcserve is a very easy solution to deploy because the infrastructure and UI are very user-friendly. It's very easy to deploy. If I remember correctly, I deployed the apps or solution across my new virtualized infrastructure in less than 30 minutes. It worked out of the box.

What other advice do I have?

It works out of the box, and it saves my life a lot. When a server goes down, Arcserve has always restored those critical servers, so I would rate it at nine on a scale from one to ten.

Beneficial live replication and simple implementation
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP is live replication."

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of Arcserve UDP could improve.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Arcserve UDP is not a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using a different solution previously but after we did some market research we switched.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Arcserve UDP was simple. The process took approximately three hours.

I rate the setup of Arcserve UDP a four out of five.

What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation of the solution. However, you have to be aware of your systems and have some knowledge.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are annual subscription fees and there are licensing costs for three computers. It is an expensive solution.

I rate the price of Arcserve UDP a two out of five.

What other advice do I have?

Arcserve UDP has served its use case 100 percent for us.

I rate Arcserve UDP an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
