User-friendly backup of the whole virtual server
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important part is that you actually know you have a backup of the whole virtual server."
  • "I have also been struggling with the storage and in some cases I need to move things due to performance."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Veeam at our college and we have been connected for a while now. We use it for backing up virtual servers in the Hyperwave and it is working very well. It works well for backing up services. We can backup Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Sharepoint and it is actually easy to understand how to restore from it. It has an easy UI.

How has it helped my organization?

The most important part is that we know we have a backup of the whole virtual server. We can restore the whole server if we want, or just take some specific files. I like this duality of the product. That's how I put it on virtualized software.

What needs improvement?

The most important improvement would be for it to be updated to support new servers and we actually are in a situation that we are going to connect our Exchange service to a new one. They have to actually support new software as they are released and I think Veeam has promised to support new Windows upgrades which is important .

If they had some more agents for physical computers, that would also be a nice feature.

I have also been struggling with the storage, and in some cases I need to move things due to performance. We can use replication and we hope that this will help us continue with Veeam.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is very stable. I have been struggling with the storage now and that's not Veeam's fault, but sometimes I have problems with it. We are short on storage right now, but because of some performance issues we have to reserve a room at our location and the connection between those two rooms is not great. I hope I found the cause of that problem so in this situation we actually have been struggling with storage. I know that Veeam has support for more storage. If there was a snapshot functionality on Veeam, it would help. I think we cannot use the replication part of the solution but I think we are going to use it more now when they have more of the location sites, and replicate to the different locations.

How are customer service and support?

I know they have good support, but I haven't been using them very often. I'd like to try and figure out what the problem is myself. I know that we have a contract to use their help. Mostly I use the support for upgrades to new versions. I don't contact Veeam support very often.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. It was easy to install. If you miss some plugins for Windows, you actually can click "okay" and it's on the installation media. The installation is very easy.

What was our ROI?

It is a cheap solution with the ability to backup for our needs.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is great. It's software related, and I know that might be a good thing because it's a cheap solution to buy and we have been looking for a program for backup and they fit the bill. The price of Veeam and its software related products enable you to have your own hardware. You can use your own infrastructure and you can actually buy what you want. This is cost-effective. It might be that if you buy something else and they have media things it's very expensive but it works very well. If your company has pressure to actually get back data very quickly, it might not be possible with this solution. Our college environment doesn't seem to have this problem. There has not been much down time but I think if the server is broken, it just restores within an hour and everything returns back to normal.

What other advice do I have?

You can actually use the infrastructure you already have so you don't have to buy new hardware to actually start using it. That's the most important part about this solution.

Veeam launches like a rocket and delves into the feature list of VMware. It's been an overall improvement.

What is most valuable?

The backup and blocklevel incremental backup, where daily full backups are done. Also the hotcopy feature is valuable.

How has it helped my organization?

It's been an overall improvement many places at our client sites where almost everyone runs vm's or Hyper-V.

What needs improvement?

Nothing in particular, Veeam launches like a rocket and delves into the featurelist of VMware, for example, and tie their development close together with the devs coming from VMware or Microsoft.

For how long have I used the solution?

Since early 2008 when Veeam entered the scene.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Never had any issues that couldn’t be dealt with from an admin pov.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its running rock steady, so there isn’t any issues in my/our end.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It scales 100% its just a matter of licenses pr cpu, so as long as your compliant it runs like it should.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Rating in level from 1-10 where 10 is the best i would rate it 10.

Technical Support:

Rating in level from 1-10 where 10 is the best i would rate it 10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes used many different solutions, but no one were as great as Veeam when talking virtual backups.

How was the initial setup?

Yes more or less, its been improved over the years and now version 8 is ready and even more potent.

What about the implementation team?

We are an IT consultancy business doing implemetations ourself, so 100% done by us at N2IT.

What was our ROI?

ROI is compared to for example running CommVault returned many times, this is due to the flexibility ion license models etc. And also in terms of space utilization. Veeam does full daily backups with whats called synthetic backup streams of some sort, it takes all block changes and stream those into the latest backup and there create a full backup as well as restore pointers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Setup cost is a variable, but take the number of cpu´s and multiply that with the license cost as well as a target for backup storage and you have the price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes evaluated vRanger and PHP backup and also Symantec. No one met the requirements.

We decided on Veeam because we were much more integrated into VMware core and you didn't have to script yourself out of alot of tideous tasks to get things working.

Veeam worked out of the box and was a tight close match to what we knew Windows-wise.

What other advice do I have?

Nothing beats Veeam when it comes to Backup in a virtual environment. Just go for it, Veeam won’t let you down.

Very nice review! Veeam is defiantly a great very costly solution but the recover time is great. I think the best bang for your buck on the market today would be Paragon protect and Restore. Centrally managed hybrid solution for both your physical and virtual environment. We currently use their software and it's the most cost effective scalable solution on the market today. You get everything you need from one SKU, deduplication, replication, granular recovery of Microsoft exchange and more. Checkout this review of backup exec 16 VS Paragon

Veeam has saved us many hours but the performance is slow when making changes (This could be our hardware, or Veeam)

What is most valuable?

There are quite a few features for Veeam which are helpful, but in my mind the ability to take a backup from a week ago and spin up a temporary VM to retrieve files is the feature I use the most. The wizards are extremely user friendly and easy to use. Another very nice feature of Veeam is the ability to seamlessly intergrate with your VM environment. From within Veeam I can browse all of my VMs and choose the appropriate vm I want to add to backup. The low disk warnings are awesome in Veeam, I am alerted well before we run out of space.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam has saved us many hours retrieving deleted files as well as testing backups. Our old backup solution was getting to the point where we could not go more than a couple of days without backups failing. With Veeam we have not had any time where backups did not run. We also have been able to run since January 2014 with no “failed” backups.

What needs improvement?

The performance is slow when making changes. I am unable to determine if the cause is slow disk that we use for our storage, of if Veeam is slow. When I delete a VM in Veeam it takes about 20 minutes to delete the backups with 83 restore points. With that being said we are getting the “Speed Boost” upgrade that should improve performance. With this being said, the program performs very quick when navigating around the UI. One issue I have ran into is I have been confused at times and added the same VM to multiple backup jobs. I wish there was a “warning” box that would pop up saying this vm is already protected in another job.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been on Veeam Backup & Replication 7.0 Enterprise Edition since January 2014. We are updating to the latest version of Veeam late 2014. Previously we were on a HP tape backup for many years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We had an outside vendor do the initial deployment

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam is extremely stable. I have not had to do anything with the Veeam VM since the original install. We get 100% backups every day.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability for me is adding new VMs to be backed up by Veeam. Without much training I am able to create a group and add the new VMs to the group to be backed up by Veeam.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Have not contacted support

Technical Support:

Have not contacted support

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used HP Storageworks. We were no longer getting consistent good backups. Every day we had to baby the backup to make it work. As part of the Veeam backup we also we able to get away from the tape backup system.

How was the initial setup?

Setup was completed by an outside consultant.

What about the implementation team?

We used an outside consultant who was extremely familiar with Veeam, they did great.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate any other backup systems, we were on a tight timeline due to too many failing backups. We went with Veeam due to our consultants great experience with Veeam from other clients.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam is a great fit for a seasoned IT pro, of someone who is green. Get a trial of the software and try it. My other advice is to do the math and get a large enough SAN. We currently keep 180days of backups for 50+ VMs.

Comes with malware detection features that can detect malware before initiating a backup job for a server
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the newest features in version 12.1 is malware detection. This feature allows the software to detect malware before initiating a backup job for a server. Although I haven't had the opportunity to personally try it out due to its recent release, I came across it while working on an environment in a cluster for a customer."
  • "The solution's pricing may be expensive compared to other products."

What is our primary use case?

I worked on a project involving a multi-cloud environment, specifically backing up on-prem servers to the Azure cloud. However, the project was not completed due to financial issues between our company and the client. The technical configuration, such as creating a Veeam Data Platform plugin on Azure and connecting it with on-prem servers, was mostly done, but the project was halted before creating jobs. The challenges were financial and not technical. This was my first and last experience with such a multi-cloud project.

What is most valuable?

One of the newest features in version 12.1 is malware detection. This feature allows the software to detect malware before initiating a backup job for a server. Although I haven't had the opportunity to personally try it out due to its recent release, I came across it while working on an environment in a cluster for a customer.

What needs improvement?

The solution's pricing may be expensive compared to other products.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the product for one and a half years.

How are customer service and support?

We have faced several issues with Acronis because their support hasn't been as helpful compared to Veeam Data Platform's support. It has been very supportive and has assisted us in many cases. Unfortunately, our experiences with Acronis support have not been as positive, leading us to discontinue working with Acronis for several months now.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

What was our ROI?

The solution is worth its money.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam Data Platform has a significant difference compared to other tools or products. It is not very simple because it offers a lot of advanced features that can solve various problems in customers' environments. However, managing it is not difficult, but it's not as straightforward as Acronis, which is simpler because it focuses on core features like backup and simple recovery without many additional complexities.

I find that I rarely encounter issues with the product. One notable aspect is the simplicity of its licensing, especially when compared to other vendors. Additionally, with each use, I discover more features.

I rate the overall product a ten out of ten.

A highly stable product that provides excellent backup features and has a proactive support team
Pros and Cons
  • "Backup and restore features are valuable."
  • "The product must provide better security."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used for backup and restore. It can also be used for VM replication.

What is most valuable?

I like almost everything about the product. Backup and restore features are valuable. They develop everything. If a competitor invents a new feature, the vendor also implements it.

What needs improvement?

The product must provide better security. It must provide an integration with a tool that has ransomware protection.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for about ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool is rock solid. It is very, very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are huge systems for which Veeam is not big enough, but we can partition the big environment and install several Veeam instances. The tool scales very well. We face no issues. The product is suitable for the smallest to the biggest enterprises. There is a free community edition that is limited to ten virtual machines. If we buy a license, we can scale up to 1000 instances.

How are customer service and support?

The support is one of the best I have seen. The team has a quick response time and provides quality feedback. The team is proactive. I am really happy with the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with IBM and Data Protector. Veeam is better because it focuses on a single product.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is simple. With just a couple of clicks, we can install the product. However, it depends on how complex the environment is. Compared to other products, it is quite straightforward. We mostly deploy the solution on-premises. However, we can get opportunities to implement the cloud version as a service provider or back up an organization’s cloud infrastructure.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is not low, but we get value for our money. We don't want a cheap product. We want a good product. The tool is reasonably priced for the quality it provides.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution to others. There is some room for improvement. Overall, I rate the tool a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

An easy-to-deploy product with simple configurations that can be used as a repository for storing data
Pros and Cons
  • "The product’s configuration and settings are very easy."
  • "The endpoint protection console is not centralized."

What is our primary use case?

We have used the solution for combining cloud and on-premise storage, like a hybrid repository for storing our data and offloading. We have also created backups for Exchange and SQL. We also use the solution for endpoint protection like laptops and bare metal restore.

What is most valuable?

The product has introduced cloud storage, which can be used directly for backing up the data. We need not have an on-premise storage location. It makes everything easy. The product’s configuration and settings are very easy.

What needs improvement?

The endpoint protection console is not centralized. It needs to be improved. The product must improve its reporting features so that it can be used for audit purposes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for at least eight years.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. If everything is in place, deploying the solution takes one to two hours.

What about the implementation team?

One or two people from our team can handle the deployment process. They have admin-level access to the server. It is easy. No other intervention is required.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I rate the tool’s pricing a seven out of ten. The product is expensive for small businesses. However, it is not that expensive.

What other advice do I have?

The product is suitable for a BDM organization that does not have the option to store data on-premise. It is really easy to manage. It can also be restored very easily. If we have a good network speed, it does a quicker restore. Overall, I rate the solution an eight and a half out of ten.

  • "Its import and export processes for information and policies could be better."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to back up all our products, like Exchange, SharePoint, Linux, Windows, Oracle, and SQL.

What is most valuable?

The solution has a user-friendly interface.

What needs improvement?

The solution's admin scheduling scripts need improvement. Also, import and export processes for information and policies could be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution's stability as a nine.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the solution's scalability as a nine.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's customer support team is responsive and efficient. It resolves the issues promptly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have used IBM TSM and Symantec NetBackup before. In comparison, the solution is simple to use, integrates well with third-party solutions, and has dedicated technical experts.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the solution as a nine out of ten.

A stable and scalable backup solution that has a good recovery data backup feature
Pros and Cons
  • "Recovery of backup data is the most valuable feature."
  • "The pricing model could be improved. It can be made cheaper."

What is our primary use case?

It is used both as a virtual server and a physical server for enterprise backup that run different applications.

How has it helped my organization?

What is most valuable?

Recovery of backup data is the most valuable feature.

What needs improvement?

The pricing model could be improved. It can be made cheaper. Also, Veeam should provide more training for the partners so that they are able to give better support to customers. In the next release, I want to see full integration with the cloud.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution. Stability depends on the implementation. If you make an error in implementation, the environment will not be stable once you get it right through an implementation; remember, it will be stable. Most of the time, the software is very stable; it's human usage and implementation. That's why it's important to do the proper gathering of information and proper assessment of the environment before you do anything.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. I rate its scalability an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Some renew, and some don't renew the support. Those who know the value of it will always renew it because if there's any issue, we can always go to the backend to get the system. After all, they're the experts on it.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. I rate its setup phase an eight out of ten. The deployment does not take more than a week once you do the initial information gathering properly. Install it on a physical server, maybe Windows or Linux, then install the clients to this agent, in other sense, if there's any agent for it on the respective servers that need the agents.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing depends on the number of clients. We pay 10,00 USD per year. On a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive, I rate the pricing an eight out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

It is recommended that those planning to use the solution follow the best practices for implementation. I rate the overall solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
