For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for the last three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

How are customer service and support?

The support is good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

How was the initial setup?

It required 2-3 people to deploy. It is deployed in a hybrid manner. It took almost 2-3 hours for the process to complete.

The deployment procedure begins by accessing the Veeam Backup website to download the necessary software. Subsequently, the software is managed on the server where installation is intended. Before proceeding with installation, it's recommended to have a backup, ensuring functionality on the server. The installation process itself is distinct, not combined with the backup sector. Each step is downloadable, contributing to the installation information. The final step involves creating a backup job. Users can choose the backup type they prefer, whether it's full, implemented, or differential. Following this, the backup can be saved on desired media, such as servers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not expensive and I would rate it five out of ten.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We considered other vendors but discovered that the Veeam Backup has establishment as a direct node-to-node connection and synchronization with other systems.

What other advice do I have?

I can recommend that it serves as a good solution. The code constitutes a comprehensive answer. It effectively backs up all workloads. This applies to various scenarios – from email to physical and virtual machines, services, SAP DNS, and Azure DNS – allowing for comprehensive backup solutions. It extends to cloud-based backups as well. Essentially, it covers the entirety of our workload, whether on our infrastructure or network.

I would rate it an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Useful growth tracking, overview tracking, but increasingly complex
Pros and Cons
  • "The most beneficial aspect of Veeam ONE is the ability to track your company's growth on a month-to-month basis. With this tool, you can determine if you need to purchase more target storage or if you have enough. This is essential for budgeting purposes, as, without this information, you may discover too late that you require additional storage or that your cloud usage is not aligning with what you are being charged. Veeam ONE aids in forecasting and usage analysis, making it a valuable asset."
  • "One common customer complaint is that Veeam, not just Veeam ONE, has become increasingly complex over time. This means that it is now very feature-rich, which can be challenging for some users to navigate and understand. There is a need for more education on how to use the GUI and all of the available features. Even regular users of Veeam may struggle to utilize the new features, which makes it more challenging for backup administrators to manage their backups. The platform is not becoming simpler, but rather, it is becoming more complicated over time."

What is our primary use case?

I am demonstrating specific reporting capabilities of Veeam ONE to customers, which includes a valuable yet lesser-known feature that enables the creation of a VIZIO diagram for the entire VMware cluster, displaying all servers that can be further explored. This feature is highly beneficial as it can create a comprehensive video diagram of the entire infrastructure, including servers, storage, and connected devices, in just one hour, whereas doing it manually would take weeks. However, the feature is not widely known and needs to be located in the software. It is an invaluable feature that can almost pay for itself if utilized.

The purpose of using this solution is to estimate the need for expansion and growth. This involves monitoring the number of restores, daily usage patterns, and the timing of tool usage. The primary objective is to ensure successful backups and that they occur as scheduled. You must examine any growth patterns that you detect, whether on a daily or weekly basis and analyze the number of restores you perform. This is particularly beneficial for sizing your target and determining retention capacity for both on-premises and cloud scalability. All the data and reporting aid in assessing the size, growth, and availability of your data, as well as its overall success.

How has it helped my organization?

The Veeam ONE diagram is a relatively unknown feature that is only available in the solution. This tool enables you to create an overview of your entire infrastructure, based on your VMware cluster, and delve deeper to obtain specific information about each server, including how they are interconnected and their respective names. Having this tool at your disposal is undoubtedly valuable.

What is most valuable?

The most beneficial aspect of Veeam ONE is the ability to track your company's growth on a month-to-month basis. With this tool, you can determine if you need to purchase more target storage or if you have enough. This is essential for budgeting purposes, as, without this information, you may discover too late that you require additional storage or that your cloud usage is not aligning with what you are being charged. Veeam ONE aids in forecasting and usage analysis, making it a valuable asset.

What needs improvement?

One common customer complaint is that Veeam, not just Veeam ONE, has become increasingly complex over time. This means that it is now very feature-rich, which can be challenging for some users to navigate and understand. There is a need for more education on how to use the GUI and all of the available features. Even regular users of Veeam may struggle to utilize the new features, which makes it more challenging for backup administrators to manage their backups. The platform is not becoming simpler, but rather, it is becoming more complicated over time.

It would be helpful if Veeam ONE allowed a view of all of your repositories in a single panel, rather than having to check multiple repositories separately. This consolidated view would provide better visibility on the target repository, which can be very helpful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam ONE for approximately three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam ONE does not need scalability. However, scalability becomes a consideration when assessing the ease of adding repositories and storage to the back end via the VIN GUI. Fortunately, this process is not particularly difficult.

We sell Veeam ONE to 50 percent of our engagements.

How are customer service and support?

The support from Veeam ONE is excellent.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process for Veeam ONE can be complicated, depending on your usage. It is not a straightforward process. You need to establish a Veeam ONE server, which is something that many users may not be aware of. It is necessary to dedicate a Veeam server as either a standalone or a VM for a VM server, which adds complexity to the initial setup process.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment using Veeam ONE because it helps in sizing, scaling, and projection.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing structure for Veeam ONE has changed to what is now called the "VUL" or "Universal License". Previously, people mainly used socket licenses, but this has now changed. The new pricing structure was introduced last year.

The concept of the universal license for Veeam ONE still needs to be explained more to customers. While Veeam ONE is still a good option in terms of pricing, it's important to note that it's only the software component, and a target appliance is also required. This is different from the full appliances and software options like Rubrik and Cohesity. It's crucial to understand that Veeam ONE is not the complete backup solution, but rather a part of it that needs to be combined with additional components.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam ONE has a lot of great features, and it's worth spending time exploring its capabilities. The video diagram feature is especially valuable because it's easy to use and provides significant benefits in addition to Veeam ONE's reporting.

I rate Veeam ONE a seven out of ten.

In one scenario, we started with 2,000 users and scaled up to 24,000
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam is highly scalable. In one scenario, we started with 2,000 users and scaled up to 24,000."
  • "All our customers would like a cheaper license and more flexible deployment."

What is our primary use case?

The use cases vary because we work for several clients and deploy different solutions for each. Some of our customers have upwards of 5,000 users. But generally speaking, we use Veeam for copying databases and storage.

We use Veeam, Veritas, or Commvault for simple security and second-level storage. We might use Oracle and different kinds of databases for replication and database storage with built-in replication.

What needs improvement?

All our customers would like a cheaper license and more flexible deployment

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Veeam for four or five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam is highly scalable. In one scenario, we started with 2,000 users and scaled up to 24,000.

How are customer service and support?

I have a team of consultants who provide support, and we are Veeam-certified too, but we sometimes need help with certain customers and deployments. It's very complex, and we need more time than we expect, but it's working.

How was the initial setup?

The optimized installation takes two and a half hours, and then the total deployment takes more than a month and a half.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Customers would rather have a standard license than a subscription because they prefer an OPEX solution over a CAPEX. They prefer to buy the solution with the solution and support for five or 10 years.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veeam nine out of 10. Veeam is one of the best solutions. We are using it with customers that have 13 seats and 1,500 servers with varying technologies, including Windows and Linux databases, different interfaces, Citrix solutions, etc. We've been recommending it to our customers for the last two years.

Affordable and good for small businesses, but needs more technical depth
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam Backup has many valuable features and every feature is different. I have created backups for file-level backup, VMware or hypervisor virtual machines, physical machines, and workstations as well. Every time, I learn something new."
  • "I think Veeam needs to improve the file installation process, as well as more technical things like snapping feature issues. Sometimes during backup, when it's taking the scan snaps on the ESXi, it started and didn't remove the snapshot from there, which consumed storage on the EXSi. It could be improved with more technical depth. The response time for Veeam's technical support could also be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veeam Backup for setting up backups, according to our directives and policies, such as encryption and high contention policies. We then do the backup to Wasabi or any other cloud area. We use these directives to configure the backups.

This solution is deployed on-premises.

What is most valuable?

Veeam Backup has many valuable features and every feature is different. I have created backups for file-level backup, VMware or hypervisor virtual machines, physical machines, and workstations as well. Every time, I learn something new.

What needs improvement?

I think Veeam needs to improve the file installation process, as well as more technical things like snapping feature issues. Sometimes during backup, when it's taking the scan snaps on the ESXi, it started and didn't remove the snapshot from there, which consumed storage on the EXSi. It could be improved with more technical depth.

The response time for Veeam's technical support could also be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Veeam Backup for about four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam Backup is stable. There is an issue, where if you lost the VBR machine that was taking the backups, it's a long process to reconfigure the VBR, attach the repositories with the new VBR machine, and restore things. It is a difficult process, but with Datto, they also contain the backup in the cloud—you can manage your cloud to the portal and then you can store the machines on their cloud.

Maintenance is required from time to time, basically whenever you're upgrading your servers, workstations, or endpoint. According to that, you might need to improve your version of Veeam. I started working with VBR versions 8 and 9, and then upgraded to 10, and then 11. Different restoration features and backup features are available in different versions.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is easy to scale. You can scale it up—you just need to give it a repository and then assign the backup to those repositories. It is a little difficult moving the old backup change from one repository to another, and is not as simple as with Datto. Datto has a very simple process and when you continue with the Datto machine with a higher amount of space, they always have their pool containing all the previous backups. They also move all those backups to new storage, so their process is very easy, whereas it's a little difficult with Veeam.

Veeam Backup is mostly suitable for small organizations. For large organizations, I recommend Datto because they're more reliable, in terms of the restoration process. Small organizations may have time to recover things or provide a solution. Basically, it depends on the queue scalability or the RPU and RTO, so you must plan the solution according to that.

How are customer service and support?

I'm satisfied with Veeam's technical support. Normally, we are able to solve issues ourselves, but if we have any issues that are unresolvable and we can't find a solution on the internet or on forums, then we contact the support team.

They take a little bit longer to resolve issues because they often have call loads on the support, so you either need to wait one or two hours for someone to call you back or you need to wait on the phone. The other support teams are busy on other calls, so you have to wait for them or leave your number.

In one scenario, different issues were occurring and we discussed them with the support team. I was working on license utilization of all the VBRs, which were integrated with my Veeam Service Provider Console. We identified that the license utilization was not generating properly through the Veeam Service Provider Console and it also wasn't integrating through to my PSA integration tools. So, he worked with me and they improved the database tables to get the proper report from the VBR. From time to time, these issues are identified and we resolve them.

How was the initial setup?

If you are installing it for the first time, you might feel that it's a little bit complex. I think that if you are using a backup product, it's easier to configure the backup through Datto, Acronis' business solutions, or Synology NAS. To me, those are the easiest ways to configure the backups.

The timeframe for deployment depends on the client environment: how many servers, how many backups need to be configured, the size of the backups, etc. When you configure the backup, initially, you need to take the full backups in, which takes time if the backup size is too big and you need to configure it one by one. So, it depends on the infrastructure, bandwidth, and the size of the backup.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented this solution through an in-house team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam products are less expensive than other products. The licensing costs are low and they're pretty affordable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I'm using the Veeam Service Provider Console for centralized management of all VBR, and I created the cloud VBR for taking backups off configuration and managing them through the Veeam Service Provider Console.

I also use Datto, which I recommend for large organizations, because they are more reliable, in terms of the restoration process. You can make a machine available for a client on the Datto machine as well as in the cloud. It also takes a shorter amount of time for recovery, whereas on Veeam, you must have additional space and additional hardware available to restore the full machine. They also have a limitation of file level storage. For example, if you are running VBR on a machine and restoring the file, you have two options: you can either restore the files on the original location first, or you can restore the file on the same VR machine. If you lost your original location and you're restoring files, then you must restore the files on one of those two locations because you can't store files on network parts or any external storage. Small organizations may have time to recover things or provide a solution.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veeam Backup a seven out of ten.

I would recommend Veeam Backup, especially for small businesses. Normally, small business owners have a small budget, so they need to configure Veeam, whereas large organizations have large budgets, so they go to Datto. Small businesses can deploy Veeam if they have four or five backups. Otherwise, I would recommend Datto if they can afford it.

Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery.
Pros and Cons
  • "Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery."
  • "Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources."

How has it helped my organization?

We had an issue with power in the data center and one of the IBM storage devices could not startup. We managed to restore all of the VMs from Veeam and disaster recovery was executed as expected within our SLA.

What is most valuable?

Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery.

What needs improvement?

  • Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources.
  • They could look at different ways to replicate only new changes or blocks.
  • If we have to use Veeam for disaster recovery, we need to make sure that we can at least have up to 10 or 15 minutes of data before a disaster happens. Currently, you can have replication but this uses/eats up a lot of resources, on the network. Is there any other way they could increase RPO with less or limited network resources being used?

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We did have stability issues and we had to contact technical support. They were very helpful.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn’t have any previous tools for this.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. We did quite a bit of research and lab testing before the actual implementation. The white papers where very helpful

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at Zerto and Acronis.

What other advice do I have?

If they are looking for backup and recovery, Veeam is the way to go. If they are looking for a high RPO and RTO, Zerto is the way to go.

Its ease of use and simple UI are the most valuable features.

What is most valuable?

Its ease of use is the most valuable feature. It has a very simple UI.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam is a very stable product. The ease of use and UI are some of its highlights. Learning this tool is very easy and you do not need any training classes.

What needs improvement?

Right now, replication it does in every 15 minutes. However, if it could do continuous replication or even bring it down to 5 minutes, then it would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used the first version and stopped using it for a while, due to many physical servers in our environment. I have been using the new version for almost a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues that could not be resolved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is excellent; they are very prompt and knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using another solution before this one. The reason we moved over to this solution was that we were only 30% virtualized, so we had to use a product that had backup physical servers.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was very straightforward and any technical person can do the initial setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is per CPU, so it depends on the number of physical CPUs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Based on my previous experience with Veeam, I didn’t evaluate anything else.

What other advice do I have?

It is a very solid product with an easy UI. If you are 90% virtualized, then it is a great product.

Veeam has saved us many hours but the performance is slow when making changes (This could be our hardware, or Veeam)

What is most valuable?

There are quite a few features for Veeam which are helpful, but in my mind the ability to take a backup from a week ago and spin up a temporary VM to retrieve files is the feature I use the most. The wizards are extremely user friendly and easy to use. Another very nice feature of Veeam is the ability to seamlessly intergrate with your VM environment. From within Veeam I can browse all of my VMs and choose the appropriate vm I want to add to backup. The low disk warnings are awesome in Veeam, I am alerted well before we run out of space.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam has saved us many hours retrieving deleted files as well as testing backups. Our old backup solution was getting to the point where we could not go more than a couple of days without backups failing. With Veeam we have not had any time where backups did not run. We also have been able to run since January 2014 with no “failed” backups.

What needs improvement?

The performance is slow when making changes. I am unable to determine if the cause is slow disk that we use for our storage, of if Veeam is slow. When I delete a VM in Veeam it takes about 20 minutes to delete the backups with 83 restore points. With that being said we are getting the “Speed Boost” upgrade that should improve performance. With this being said, the program performs very quick when navigating around the UI. One issue I have ran into is I have been confused at times and added the same VM to multiple backup jobs. I wish there was a “warning” box that would pop up saying this vm is already protected in another job.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been on Veeam Backup & Replication 7.0 Enterprise Edition since January 2014. We are updating to the latest version of Veeam late 2014. Previously we were on a HP tape backup for many years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We had an outside vendor do the initial deployment

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veeam is extremely stable. I have not had to do anything with the Veeam VM since the original install. We get 100% backups every day.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability for me is adding new VMs to be backed up by Veeam. Without much training I am able to create a group and add the new VMs to the group to be backed up by Veeam.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Have not contacted support

Technical Support:

Have not contacted support

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used HP Storageworks. We were no longer getting consistent good backups. Every day we had to baby the backup to make it work. As part of the Veeam backup we also we able to get away from the tape backup system.

How was the initial setup?

Setup was completed by an outside consultant.

What about the implementation team?

We used an outside consultant who was extremely familiar with Veeam, they did great.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate any other backup systems, we were on a tight timeline due to too many failing backups. We went with Veeam due to our consultants great experience with Veeam from other clients.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam is a great fit for a seasoned IT pro, of someone who is green. Get a trial of the software and try it. My other advice is to do the math and get a large enough SAN. We currently keep 180days of backups for 50+ VMs.

What is our primary use case?

Our clients use Veeam Data Platform for backup and replication.

What is most valuable?

Veeam Data Platform copies data very efficiently. Our clients choose the solution because it is simple and inexpensive.

What needs improvement?

Veeam Data Platform lacks cyber security tools. The solution's competitors, Rubrik and Cohesity, have much better tools for analyzing data to determine whether there has been a cyber attack.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Veeam Data Platform for 5 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate Veeam Data Platform a nine out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I've not had any problems associated with the scalability of the solution. It doesn't have any big limitations. Our customers for Veeam Data Platform are mostly small to medium enterprises.

I rate the solution an eight out of ten for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

The solution provides good technical support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Cohesity has some solid features around deployment flexibility. Cohesity has functionality over and above backup and replication. Rubrik is vastly superior in terms of its cybersecurity credentials.

How was the initial setup?

The solution’s initial setup is easy.

What about the implementation team?

The solution's deployment time really depends on the size of the project. Depending on the size of the project, it may take days or weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's licensing is relatively simple.

On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam Data Platform is very flexible and provides many options for storing data on several different platforms, depending on what the customer wants to achieve. The solution's deployment requires two people, including a networking and storage person. Managing the solution takes a quarter of an FTE or one. Veeam Data Platform is less functional than other products but is more cost-effective.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
