What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I consider the solution's technical support to be excellent, perfect.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

While I used to work with other products whose names I cannot recall, I prefer to work with those of Veeam.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of the solution could be lower.

We pay for the solution annually, particularly as relates to the cloud version.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is deployed both on-premises and to the cloud.

There are 1,500 people making use of it.

We require one person for its maintenance.

While the documentation is good enough, it should be properly read. A person should read the manual and be experienced with the infrastructure of his computers and company servers.

I rate Veeam Backup and Replication as an eight out of ten.

Works well in two different environments, whether it is on-premises, cloud, or a combination
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution works well in two different environments, whether it is on-premises, cloud, or a combination."
  • "If you do not use the standard software and you go with a third-party solution such as this one, it might not work the same. There is an integration issue I understand between the database standards."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution mainly for backup and redundancies. We keep historical VM images and replicate them to other data centers that we have.

What is most valuable?

The solution works well in two different environments, whether it is on-premises, cloud, or a combination.

What needs improvement?

If you do not use the standard software and you go with a third-party solution such as this one, it might not work the same. There is an integration issue I understand between the database standards.

Additionally, the solution can be difficult to manage if you do not have the training.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for approximately three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have deployed this solution mostly in medium to large size businesses.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is very straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When it comes to pricing for a backup solution for data centers, you do not care about the price. We just care about the service and want it to be reliable. In terms of subscription, it really makes sense. When you want to use all the functionalities it is good that Veeam did the subscription-based model, this is what gives it the most strength on the price.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veeam Backup Replication an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

Rotating HDDs for offline backups use case

What is our primary use case?

Protection of virtual workloads.

What is most valuable?

  • Rotating HDDs for offline backups use case
  • Instant VM recovery with vPower NFS and SureBackup, also known as Recovery Assurance by other vendors.

What needs improvement?

  • Relying on open source infrastructure for Veeam's architectural components instead of Microsoft for OS and DB.
  • Support for containers, and agent-less KVM backups, and Citrix environments.

Patch release and support are efficient and it doesn't take ages for most issues to be resolved.

Valuable Features

It's very simple to implement and very fast to learn. One backup can be done and many restorations are possible from that backup. It's mature integrity within a virtualized environment has always been important.

Improvements to My Organization

Veeam B&R saved our many files that accidentally had been deleted. By using File Level Recovery, all of them got restored easily and in a time manner.

Room for Improvement

Not covering the physical environment is both a pro and con of the product. Many organizations still have to consider other enterprise class solutions because of their physical servers. The other thing that they need to consider is the integration between Veeam and other storage vendors to use all the array level features to make backups even faster and more efficient. I guess Veeam needs to have a look at the enterprise market and not get stuck with small or mid-range forever.

Use of Solution

I've been using and proposing this product to many customers for more than five years.

Deployment Issues

Patch release and support are both very efficient and it doesn't take ages for most issues to be resolved.

Stability Issues

There have been no performance issues.

Scalability Issues

It's been able to scale for our needs.

Customer Service and Technical Support

I would rate it very highly.

Initial Setup

It's been easy to deploy, and I've never had any complaints from a customer.

Implementation Team

I did it myself and used my team in projects. I found the SureBackup implementation quite tricky, especially the health check mechanism which can be a bit confusing.

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

It's not cheap for sure but in comparison with rivals it's not very pricey as well. Disaster recovery and backup solutions are not cheap and investing in them is worth much as it helps you to protect valuable data.

Other Solutions Considered

Veeam clearly stands in the middle, somewhere between simplicity and richness. I have proposed and designed backup solution based on many other products such as EMC Networker or Netbackup, but Veeam suits many customers' needs.

Other Advice

The best approach would be to implement a trial in a test environment to test it and run all the features to help you decide which edition and features you need and understand the architecture needed to run it.

Veeam has improved much since your review with storage integration, Veeam Agent for physical backups, etc. Great product as we use the Nimble Integration and the Agents for our Exchange environment.

It simplifies the backup process by allowing applications that are virtualized to be treated as virtual machines.

Valuable Features

Application Aware simplifies the backup of applications that are deployed as virtual machines. Treating VMs as VMs. Virtual lab is also another useful feature for verifying backups with SureBackup and also allowing us to deploy test environments for test/dev.

Improvements to My Organization

It simplifies the backup process by allowing applications that are virtualized to be treated as virtual machines. Veeam's virtual labs actually takes into account all the required dependencies of testing application servers with ease. Not all solutions have this feature.

Room for Improvement

There should be additional support for guest base backups.

Use of Solution

I have been using this solution for more than 5+ years. I have also looked at and did competitive analysis among all the data protection solutions that are out there. Veeam is very simple and intuitive.

Deployment Issues

Nope. The solution is very simple and intuitive.

Stability Issues

There was no stability issues with Veeam that I had encountered.

Scalability Issues

I have not encountered any issues with scalability with Veeam.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer Service:

The level of customer service has actually improved over the years. Rather than a level 1 support who has no idea how to troubleshoot. It seems that the level of support is more knowledgeable these days.

Technical Support:

I would rate it as a 4 (with 5 being the highest).

Initial Setup

Very straightforward and intuitive for someone who has been in the data protection industry for many years.

Implementation Team

In-house because it is very simple and intuitive.

Other Solutions Considered

Yes, CA ArcServe, TSM.

Other Advice

Try it out and you'll be very surprised at how easy Veeam is for virtualized environments.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

YES, Avamar and Tivoli.
