With this product we were able to restore the Hyper-V Infrastructure to our 2nd Data Center and 20 Hospitals.

What is most valuable?

Continuous Data Backup and Replication features that allow us to have our entire Virtual Infrastructure recoverable in minutes.

How has it helped my organization?

Before this product we were using something else that was entirely unreliable for our company. Backups need to be counted on. In Feb of 2014 in Columbus, Ohio there was a major Power Failure downtown that was the result of a gas explosion of the corner of our Data Center. Entire Data Center was offline for a week. (Catastrophic Event could be classified as a Disaster). With a proper configuration of this product we were able to restore the Hyper-V Infrastructure to our 2nd Data Center and restore functionality to about 20 Hospitals and Imaging centers around the state of Ohio. (Tier1 systems were restored with in 30 minutes and remaining filtered in).

What needs improvement?

  • Being able to Backup from Cloud Services like Azure
  • Better Logging to assist you in determining root causes of failures
  • Better Traffic Throttle Monitoring

Hard to say but I would say the company wouldn't be around based on the event described above.

Initial Software costs includes 3 yrs of support = $65000 for 20 HyperV Servers.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at AppAssure (DELL) and CommVault.

What other advice do I have?

Do your research but by far this is one of the best products out there. Agentless is a very good thing to leverage in a Backup Software.

I like that idea of backing up from Azure since you can restore to it why not back it up. Hopefully this is a suggestion they look to implement. Also wish too logging was easier to read and determine causes of failures but then we would put support out of jobs. :)

Very good product for a mid-range company. Backup and recovery is made easy. DR snapshots are great and easy to restore when needed.

I love the ability to either restore the entire VM or just a single file if needed, it saved us a lot of pain and money.

What is most valuable?

There is no one feature that is most important. I love the ability to either restore the entire VM or just a single file if needed. We have had to restore VMs both ways and it saved us a lot of pain and money. The speed of the restore jobs was extremely quick as well.

How has it helped my organization?

It has given us the ability to restore our systems very, very quickly. The backups run very quickly as well, which helps us free up bandwidth on our network.

What needs improvement?

They still don’t have a plugin for use with EMC Data Domain. All else is fantastic.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Veeam Backup and Replication for about 3 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No problems with deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

The customer service is excellent!

Technical Support:

Technical support is fantastic. Not only do they understand the product very well, but they also help the end user to understand how to troubleshoot the issue as well. They are also really friendly and kind.

Yes. Initially, we used Norton’s Backup Exec. We switched primarily because we were virtualizing our entire infrastructure

It was pretty straightforward in my book. I thought it was very user-friendly. The documentation is very good as well.

What about the implementation team?

We did the entire implementation in-house.

What other advice do I have?

Check to see if they have a plug-in for your storage vendor.

Two features are unmatched compared to other products: SureBackup and the possibility of Replication (and Virtual LAB).

What is most valuable?

Two features are unmatched compared to other products: SureBackup and the possibility of Replication (and Virtual LAB). These are a “must”.

How has it helped my organization?

The tool SureBackup allows me to check, once a month in my case, the situation of my backups: I always have the truth about my backups. Regarding the tool Replication, we use it for customers who do not have large financial resources, while allowing us to have the opportunity to restore their ambient edi production in the shortest time possible.

What needs improvement?

There is always scope for improvement (in fact with the v8 version there will be improvements in fact!), But already it is great!

For how long have I used the solution?

For 1 year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

The deployment of this product is the most simple there is. Following step by step instructions in 10 minutes is all set.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No problem of stability. At most problems can occur with very large volumes of data (for example, VM that occupy more than 7TB data ... but in this case, do not know how many other products fail to complete this operation).

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It depends on the type of license you use.

How are customer service and technical support?

Currently, we contacted the Customer Service who promptly provided us answers KB related. Little else (and I would say that is a good thing.)

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before using VEEAM, we were using Symantec Backup Exec. Unfortunately, it gave us many problems. Especially for some customers: it signaled the completion of backups, while in fact created only empty files.

How was the initial setup?

As mentioned in a previous question, is extremely simple and direct.

What about the implementation team?

All the infrastructure of our customers have been fully designed and implemented by us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Given the simplicity of installation and implementation, its initial cost is very low. Of course, having the ability to automate the verification of backups, having the ability to perform a restore also from the Help Desk group and, finally, having very few problems with backup, keeps management costs remaining low.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also evaluated the product of StorageCraft but, I would say, is too young.

What other advice do I have?

It is a product with significant potential that can be positioned transversely on many case. The same reply can be made from the same VMware but we will not have a platform to test to see if it works (in VEEAM called Virtual LAb). To get a better solution, you switch to the Site Recovery Manager, but the costs are very high and certainly is a solution for much larger companies. The product is very reliable, easy to manage, and, above all, complete.

Tape support is still not performing as expected; Veeam relates to backup as a repository instead of long term archive.

What is most valuable?

I started working with Veeam because of its replication capabilities. Later on when version 7 was released, with the addition of the tape support, I started migrating to pure Veeam environments.

What needs improvement?

Tape support is still not performing as expected (at least for my opinion) as Veeam relates to tape backup as a repository instead of a long term archive. Schedule options can be improved.

Almost two years.

No but you need to pay attention to small things that make a big difference. 

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Usually it runs very smoothly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No, I have one rule regarding Veeam, use proxy!

I used to work with Symantec backup exec / System recovery, IBM FastBack and Arcserve each one of them has its strength and weaknesses. The reason I switched to Veeam was the native support for virtual environments.

How was the initial setup?

Pretty straightforward and intuitive.

What about the implementation team?

I'm an integrator so I can't rate myself.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I've tested CA ARCserve High Availability (formally XoSoft) IBM FastBack (formally FilesX) and Double-Take Availability.

From a business continuity aspect it has removed the need for arranging warm-start DR arrangements.

What is most valuable?

The ability to restore files in a matter of seconds or minutes depending on file size and number of files to restore. I have also used the Active Directory Explorer add-on tool for recovering AD objects this is now built-in to Veeam B&R v8.

How has it helped my organization?

We are currently using Veeam B&R to replicate our VMware environment to a disaster recovery site, in the event of a major outage we can fail-over to our DR site. From a business continuity aspect it has removed the need for arranging warm-start DR arrangements.

What needs improvement?

The main area for improvement has come in Version 8, that is native support for tape drives and the ability to archive to tape. Although Veeam B&R v7 allows you to back up your virtual servers to disks. You still need to archive those backups to tapes for long-term storage. Veeam did not provide this facility in earlier versions so we currently use Symantec backup for archiving the "restore points" for long -term storage

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Initial teething problems with replication of data between main site and the DR site but this has since been resolved.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues with stability of the product.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Good, you log calls initially using a customer portal site.

Technical Support:

Again good, knowledge base articles are available. For problems requiring a specialist - remote sessions with telephone support is made available.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Commvault which is a good product but this was based on backups of Physical Server using tapes, Veeam B&R was chosen when we made the move towards virtualisation.

How was the initial setup?

We had assistance from Technical Consultants as part of installation/commissioning process.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented Veeam B&R as part of a wider Datacentre modernization project including replacement of the SAN and physical server infrastructure. The Technical Consultants involved were introduced as a result of the tendering process, they were part of the re-seller team and were well versed in the Veeam product at the time.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

At that particular time no as Veeam was and still is the market leaders with backup of virtual servers, other companies are playing catch-up.

What other advice do I have?

I would say you need to think about the long term storage of data and how you intend to archive that data.You need to fully understand the concept of "restore points" and full-incremental vs reverse-incremental backups along with the pro and cons. This information is available on the Veeam website. Finally plan as much as can before installation!

Veeam allowed us to use just one backup solution. It allows us to restore of single objects when the vm is mounted.

What is most valuable?

Deduplication, built-in wan accelerators, advanced monitoring, backup copy and tape drive integration, explorer for MS exchange, and replication feature.

How has it helped my organization?

We used to have many backup solutions for different purposes but Veeam allowed us to use just one backup solution to backup our vms and due to the granularity of the system, it allows us to restore of single objects when the vm is mounted.

What needs improvement?

Currently VEEAM doesnt back up VMs with physical raw device mappings.
