Instant VM recovery reduces the time to recover an entire virtual machine.

Valuable Features

U-AIR (Universal Application Item recovery) – This is an important feature as it saves lot of time and offers flexibility to recover anything without wasting too much time on complete image recovery.

Instant VM recovery – This feature miraculously reduces the time to recover an entire virtual machine to just a few minutes.

Sure Backup - This feature helps ensure backups are recoverable when required. Backup Drills need not be complex and time-consuming activities.

Improvements to My Organization

We are less of an end user than provider. But, yes, I’d like to mention a scenario where we have been able to churn out lost VMs in just minutes for our cloud customers.

This makes life easier for all IT professionals by ensuring a reliable and hassle-free backup and replication solution, and thus it is reliable business IT.

Room for Improvement

With each new release, this product breaks barriers. We expect to see this completely replace the entire backup solution landscape (supports virtual/non-virtual backup and DR solutions) for heterogeneous environment.

It’s always difficult, complex and expensive to keep different data protection solutions for different systems (physical servers, virtual servers, Windows/non-Windows environments, disaster recovery solution, end-point backup solution, media manager, dedupe box, etc.).

Use of Solution

We have been proposing and deploying this solution for the past 5-6 years. We have found this has helped improve data backup and recovery for customers, with predictable and scalable performance. At the same time, it has reduced overall cost for backup infrastructure.

Deployment Issues

No issues as such with stability and scalability, but from the deployment perspective, we expect it to support a hybrid environment - multiple-edition deployment within one single Veeam Backup Server instance. It should not require having the same edition.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer service and technical support is good and prompt.

Initial Setup

Veeam deployment and configuration is quite simple. The user interface is designed for ease of use and is intuitive.

Implementation Team

We deploy for others and for our own use in a cloud environment.

Other Solutions Considered

Being a system integration organization, we work with other backup & replication solutions, but after evaluation, we found Veeam to be a better solution for x86 virtualized environments.

Other Advice

I am rating it as excellent, due to its advance features and functionality for virtual environment backup and replication. But I have left a little room for improvement by including non-virtual environment B&R, to avoid having IT silos in a customer’s environment.

This product can certainly bring value and lot of visibility and control to virtualized IT environments. It fits very well with the virtualization and consolidation story.

From our viewpoint, top features include: simple restoration capabilities and integration with NetApp Integrated Data Protection capabilities.

Valuable Features

The highly granular yet simple restoration capabilities for critical applications such as Active Directory, Exchange, SQL, SharePoint and Oracle, via an agentless single-pass backup. The deep integration with NetApp Integrated Data Protection capabilities, including controlling and managing Snapshots, SnapMirror and SnapVault, as well as the ability to provide granular, automated restoration from these protection sources. Lastly, the ability to leverage backup data copies directly for disaster recovery, test & development and/or data mining activities.

Improvements to My Organization

Veeam Backup allows FLEXdata Solutions to offer a more complete data protection strategy to our client-base, and one that delivers greater business value than the majority of legacy backup solutions in-place today.

Each organisation we work with has different data protection products and processes in place, so we are exposed to many different products and approaches. We specifically chose to partner with Veeam for a number of technical and commercial reasons. These include its rich feature set coupled with ease-of-use, strong roadmap, roadmap delivery history, simple and predictable licensing model, channel model, and deep integration with NetApp Integrated Data Protection features.

Room for Improvement

  • Scheduling functionality is not as intuitive or as flexible as it could be.
  • Some terminology can also be confusing or misleading.
  • For service providers, multi-tenancy capabilities could be enhanced.
  • Greater capabilities to protect physical hosts and applications would expand the use cases.
  • Continuous data protection (CDP) capabilities would be well received.

Use of Solution

I've been using it for 18 months.

Deployment Issues

We have had no issues with the deployment.

Stability Issues

The product is very stable.

Scalability Issues

It is highly scalable.

Customer Service and Technical Support

They’re great from a partner point of view, but I can’t comment from an end-user point of view.

Initial Setup

The initial set-up and configuration is straightforward, and the product can be installed and configured to protect data very quickly. However, like all data availability products, you must understand the data flow and the “plumbing” required to support data movement for backup, replication, and restoration activities. Most importantly, the data protection strategy must align to business requirements and expectations, so upfront design and planning is important to ensure a successful outcome.

Implementation Team

FLEXdata implement Veeam B&R for our clients, working in partnership with their in-house teams. Putting in design and planning effort upfront ensures we deliver successful outcomes to our clients.

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

The Veeam B&R licensing model is very straightforward – it is licensed per-CPU socket of virtualisation host system. This provides a predictable cost model, and avoids the often crippling “virtual machine tax” that capacity–based or agent/system-based licensing structures can impose. It is also recommended to consider Veeam's bundled offers, such as the Availability Suite or procuring additional maintenance/support upfront.

Other Advice

Firstly understand the business requirements and expectations, then design and architect the deployment in line with these requirements. Ensure you get the “plumbing” right, never forgetting that the reason you backup is that one day you may have to restore. Plan and prepare for that day.

We can now leverage in-box Windows deduplication, giving us longer retention times and spaces to spare on our backup targets.

What is most valuable?

  • Ease of use
  • Robustness
  • Scalability

How has it helped my organization?

Saves IT operations a lot of time and frustration.

Also, the ROI for our CFO is tremendous whereas we did not have data deduplication on our previous backup product, unless licensed at a cost higher/GB than buying storage. We can now leverage in-box Windows deduplication with excellent results. We have longer retention times and spaces to spare on our backup targets.

What needs improvement?

For now we’re pretty happy, but we’d like the ability to schedule.

Also, the configuration and fine tuning of the Fibre Channel based off host proxy where we leverage the SAN hardware VSS provider took some work and effort.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it for around 12 months.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

None, we did an extensive POC to get to know the product which helped us roll it out smoothly.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Once due to a Windows update. Veeam fixed this extremely rapidly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

For now we have not. As long as you make sure to take care of any hardware bottle necks in the solution (source, target, network) we have been very happy with the results.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

It's excellent.

Technical Support:

Veeam’s technical support is very good, and their responsiveness in fixing issues like the one we had once after a Windows update sets an industry standard.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did, but I cannot disclose names. We left them because they were too expensive, not focused on customer needs, and in regards to virtualization they dropped the ball big time.

How was the initial setup?

It was straightforward initially, but see above re: configuration and fine-tuning.

What about the implementation team?

We did all the work in-house.

What was our ROI?

The ROI lies in the fact that we spend a lot less time dealing with failed and problematic backups.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We spent time setting up a live POC to make sure Veeam B&R could deliver in our real world environment. After deciding to purchase it, we got it up and running with minimal effort. We’d done most of our testing & validation of the configuration in the POC.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did, but I cannot disclose names.

What other advice do I have?

Ask for a trial license, get hands on experience with the product, ask for help when you need it and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what it delivers.
