What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
Yes, combining with Hyper-V host to backup Hyper-V Virtual machines.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Yes performance issues were encountered whilst backups were performed, especially on large file servers.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Due to having previous issues V10 installed, a straightforward upgrade could not be completed. Need to perform an uninstall of previous software first.
How are customer service and support?
3/5.
How was the initial setup?
Yes to perform install on Hyper-V posed a number of challenges, needed to ensure VSS was operating properly was the main one.
What about the implementation team?
In-house.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
No, as this has been used always with the organisation.
What other advice do I have?
Evaluate product using their 30 day trial to ensure it meets the needs of backups and restore.

Nearly set-and-forget for Server Live Imaging
Pros and Cons
- "Post-implementation, this fell to zero and boosted morale by allowing the engineers to enjoy their weekends with their families."
- "There can be inconsistencies between builds in terms of the product working with one NIC or another, especially on newer generation servers."
Valuable Features
Live System Imaging – Zero Downtime.
Improvements to My Organization
The key for me at the time was allowing my Engineers to have their weekends free vs rotating them through a schedule so that servers were taken offline and imaged during the change window. Post-implementation, this fell to zero and boosted morale by allowing the engineers to enjoy their weekends with their families. In this instance, showing the team that I valued their personal lives and was willing to pay to insure their quality of life resulted in a dedicated team that was thankful and produced more.
This organization also highly mission critical server applications where RTO was very low. We did use Load Balancers and other technologies, but for a catastrophic failure this solution presented an RTO of roughly 1 Hour (depending on the size of the server) although often less. It became routine to run an off cycle image before any major physical server upgrade, thus improving the speed from development to QA to production. Developers could be less leery of major changes knowing that the back-out was quick and reliable.
Room for Improvement
There can be inconsistencies between builds in terms of the product working with one NIC or another, especially on newer generation servers. Usually downloading the latest bits solved, though. A minor nit, but it’s the only gripe I’ve had to date.

Customer Service and Technical Support
Customer Service:
Excellent.
Technical Support:Excellent.
Initial Setup
Relatively Straightforward. We needed to create an in house script to purge old images (vs using something like a product retention setting). This may have been corrected in subsequent versions.
Implementation Team
In-House.
ROI
Somewhat difficult to quantify. The key for me at the time was allowing my Engineers to have their weekends free vs rotating them through a schedule so that servers were taken offline and imaged during the change window. Post-implementation, this fell to zero and boosted morale by allowing the engineers to enjoy their weekends with their families. Developers could be less leery of major changes knowing that the back-out was quick and reliable.
Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing
Rough cost at time of implementation was approximately $1200 per managed server. One engineer monitored the job status, spending approximately 15 minutes per day.
Other Solutions Considered
No.
Other Advice
Great product, nearly set-and-forget for Server Live Imaging once fully configured.

The biggest feature is the universal restore.
Pros and Cons
- "I didn't start using Acronis until I came here 3 years ago - it's what the organization was using already, and I found that I liked it better than Symantec."
What is most valuable?
The biggest feature is the universal restore.
How has it helped my organization?
No improvement, just the ability to perform backups.
What needs improvement?
None.
For how long have I used the solution?
3 years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
I have never run into any issues.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
No.

No.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
I haven't dealt with them at all.
Technical Support:Tech support has been great.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I didn't start using Acronis until I came here 3 years ago - it's what the organization was using already. I found that I liked it better than Symantec.
How was the initial setup?
I found it pretty straightforward.
What about the implementation team?
In-house.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
No, it was already in use when I started this job.

IT Technical Lead with 51-200 employees
vmProtect is pretty good, hardly ever hits problems, but does not do “what it says on the tin” at all.
Pros and Cons
- "It allows us to backup our remote sites to a local NAS device, and allows for easy retrieval of data."
- "It does not do what it says on the tin at all."
What is most valuable?
vmProtect is pretty good, hardly ever hits problems.
How has it helped my organization?
It allows us to backup our remote sites to a local NAS device, and allows for easy retrieval of data.
What needs improvement?
Acronis Support!
For how long have I used the solution?
Nearly 4 years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
Some yes – mostly based on the fact that the install nearly 4 years ago was very messy. Different components were needed, multiple additional tasks needed to be done. The current version is easier to deploy for sure.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Yes definitely – back in the early days it was almost impossible to get a week’s worth of backup data without having to start all over again. And by that I mean uninstall, reinstall the whole product. It suffers from these issues less now but that is because we have learned which way to deal with the software and how best to make it work in our environment. It does not do “what it says on the tin” at all. You have to work it out yourself.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Not great to be honest. We had an issue with licences and purchasing problems and the standard response was very poor. Once you get through to the right person though – which we eventually did – they were great. But finding the right person who could help out was terrible
Technical Support:Terrible to be honest. You almost never get through to someone who can understand you, nor who you can understand. To be fair once the technical issue is discovered the skill level of the technicians is actually very good. But the default support responses seem to revolve around restarting the services, restarting the server, uninstalling it, copying the backup job again, etc, etc.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did yes. We switched because Acronis was recommended as a good backup system for use with NAS devices. We had tapes previously.
How was the initial setup?
What we wanted to achieve was actually very straightforward in itself but the final install ended up being very complicated because half of the things the software was SUPPOSED to do – it didn’t!
What about the implementation team?
We did it all in-house.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This was a staged solution rollout to each remote site – in all we’ve probably spent over £20,000 on the product. In terms of day to day cost we pay for annual support now only.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did yes. We looked at Symantec and Microsoft. Symantec seemed very clunky and not too up-to-date backing up to digital medium.
What other advice do I have?
Look around for others – choice was limited when we went with Acronis. I think the choice is better now.

Systems Admin at a logistics company with 501-1,000 employees
Good product however it's difficult to use on Linux.
Pros and Cons
- "This product gave us two major features: Imaging allowed us to create clones from the production server with ultimate speed, and protection against server failures with the ability to restore on different hardware."
- "Yes, especially in the restore, a simple update for the software messed up the whole setup."
What is most valuable?
Imaging operating systems and restoring on different hardware.
How has it helped my organization?
This product gave us two major features :
- Imaging allowed us to create clones from the production server with ultimate speed.
- Protection against server failures with ability to restore on different hardware.
What needs improvement?
The application Linux interface and the error reporting as it's very ambiguous
For how long have I used the solution?
3 Years
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
No, deployment is not that complicated.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Yes, especially in the restore, a simple update for the software messed up the whole setup.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
No, with proper licensing no issues.
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
On a scale from 1-5 (1=worst, 5=best), they are 2. The customer service we receive is from Acronis's partner in Saudi Arabia.
Technical Support:On a scale from 1-5 (1=worst, 5=best), they are 2. They don't have a free toll number, their web based case support wasn't good and most annoying every time you I had to call I have to go through the first line of support and answer the same questions and apply the same procedure.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We already having another solution which produces the same result for Windows. But, for Linux this software was the only one we knew about that supported the version of OS we had.
How was the initial setup?
Yes, straight forward with clear instructions.
What about the implementation team?
In-house team.
What was our ROI?
Protection of the production environment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Excluding the licensing fees, we used a virtual server to install the management console and agents didn't require that much of resource so we didn't need to upgrade any specs on the protected systems. Also, the images were stored on already existing storage. So, basically except the man hours spent on working with software there were no real investment in the setup.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
No, because of OS compatibility it was the only one we knew about.
What other advice do I have?
The product is good but using it on Linux is a bit difficult.
I would recommend it to any company that wants to implement a low cost solution.

Sr System Engineer at a outsourcing company with 501-1,000 employees
A must have cost effective backup and recovery solution for SMEs for quick recovery but not for high end applications.
Pros and Cons
- "Due to some power failure our 10 systems crashed which were recovered in few minutes by the Acronis recovery partition."
- "However it lacks advance features like granular backup and data filtering hence unsuitable for enterprise level."
Valuable Features:
The recovery system works great. I recovered the systems in few minutes from a disaster.
It has a very clear and easy to use Interface.
The vast amount of knowledge base articles on its site is great for troubleshooting issues.
I liked the feature to split backups into multiple files to fit different media types.
It has data encryption, which encrypts your backups as a security precaution.
Room for Improvement:
I found logs are not enough for troubleshooting in case of failures.
Absence of file filtering tools is disappointing.
Does not provides advance backup solution like granular backup of emails.
Other Advice:
I bought this software for backup of workgroup based computers and it worked great for them.
Scheduling was quite easy and the recovery process was awesome.
Due to some power failure our 10 systems crashed which were recovered in few minutes by the Acronis recovery partition.
However it lacks advance features like granular backup and data filtering hence unsuitable for enterprise level.

Senior Manager of Engineering with 1,001-5,000 employees
A very good backup & recovery solution with a whole bunch of features
Pros and Cons
- "Acronis Backup and Recovery has a simple interface that allows administrators to quickly achieve basic backup tasks and restoration."
- "Sometimes backups become corrupted and can not be access via the Recovery Console, You can send the backups too Acronis support (Could take months depending on the size of the backup) and they will try to recover the data, however rarely do."
Valuable Features:
Very easy to restore backups down to the item level depending on what you are backing up. We have used Acronis Backup and Recovery for around 4 years backing up our Datacentre servers and individual application servers such as Exchange, Sharepoint and SQL. Acronis Backup and Recovery has a simple interface that allows administrators to quickly achieve basic backup tasks and restoration. Administration only becomes difficult when configuring complex backup tasks.
Room for Improvement:
Sometimes backups become corrupted and can not be access via the Recovery Console, You can send the backups too Acronis support (Could take months depending on the size of the backup) and they will try to recover the data, however rarely do.
Installation is resource hungry.
Sometimes configuration can become too confusing. Before deploying Acronis we did test multiple backup solutions and did quickly realised that - we will be using Acronis as it provides all the features that we needed.
Other Advice:
I do recommend using Acronis Backup and Recovery for a small business.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
Can you tell me, please, how backups become corrupted? This is not pleasant for any user, to try to recover data from backups.
IT Administrator at a media company with 51-200 employees
Overall a very good backup software
Pros and Cons
- "It is one of my favorite backup software, much faster and more reliable than the other software that I have tried."
- "The only problem that I face while using this software is that the backup taken using its older versions do at times create problem while being restored with new versions."
Valuable Features:
It is one of my favorite backup software. Its much faster and reliable than the other softwares that i have tried. Its earlier versions were having problem backing up x64 bit structure but later versions are doing fine.
Room for Improvement:
Not much really. The only problem that i face while using this software is that the backup taken using its older versions do at times create problem while being restored with new versions. So what i believe is that there is something missing between different versions which cause(occasionally) the later versions not to restore the images taken by the earlier versions.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
I completely agree with a4illusionist on this backup solution. It is the backup cloud service solution I use to store our company information that is not too sensitive. Why spend on a backup solution when there is a great option that is cost effective? A good way to save the company some money even if not much!
Network Manager at a tech company with 51-200 employees
Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 is very stable product but takes time to learn
Pros and Cons
- "Built in backup schemes are available within the software to fulfill most common backup tasks while you can configure detailed settings to meet your specific backup requirements."
- "Requires a committed effort to learn this comprehensive software"
Valuable Features:
When system failure occurs, Acronis restores exact server or workstation copies to a new hard drive and reduces the downtime. In case of system failure we use universal restore option to recover archived backup files to a completely new system.Built in backup schemes are available within the software to fulfill most common backup tasks while you can configure detailed settings to meet your specific backup requirements.Outstanding reporting tool is included for customizable notifications and alerts.
Room for Improvement:
Requires a committed effort to learn this comprehensive software
Other Advice:
Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 is packed with drive imaging and file base backup features. It is capable of protecting both physical and virtual servers with its flexible policy based management.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.
I agree with your product presentation and I would like to add some features that Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 has. It has bare-metal restoration, the user can restore the server copies, including user configurations, system state data, applications, network settings, and others to a new hard disk. Acronis has customizable backup schemes, it has included prepackaged backup schemes within its software. Another useful feature that Acronis has is outstanding reporting, from customizable e-mail alert notifications to a centralized dashboard that can display backup status for multiple systems on a single screen.
Head of Infrastructure at a tech company with 51-200 employees
An above average data backup and recovery tool with mediocre UI
Pros and Cons
- "One of the best data backup and recovery software out there in the market."
- "Network based data backup and recovery is supported, however network recovery quite often crashes the application."
Valuable Features:
1) One of the best data backup and recovery software out there in the market.
2) Can be configured to make complete backups as per a scheduled time frame.
3) Can create a disk image to a complete disk and the same can be used to restore to a fresh hard disk.
4) Various options like incremental backup, full backup, differential backup, etc. make the product highly useful.
5) Supports popular Operating System platforms like Windows & Linux.
6) Provides a sector-by-sector disk image creation facility.
7) Disk images can be mounted to read data.
8) Allows data synchronization between two PCs running Acronis Backup and Recovery.
Room for Improvement:
1) Installation is a lengthy process and consumes a lot of disk space.
2) Data backup time is comparatively higher than other similar products out there in the market.
3) The UI is not very user friendly and first time users will definitely struggle to get through.
4) PC to PC synchronization feature requires the end user to login using their Acronis accounts. This slows down the overall synchronization process.
5) Decrypting the data before reading from disk image slows down the overall process of data recovery.
6) There are many products in the market, which do similar things at a cheaper rate.
Other Advice:
One of the best data recovery tools available in the market. However, the installation consumes a lot disk space(1GB+), which results in slower system performance. It also lacks a Virus Scanning facility. Note that systems with Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) are not currently supported. It supports network based data backup and recovery, however network recovery quite often crashes the application.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

No one solution can address all needs and hence it has definite segment and requirements where it fits well. Surely, from reviewers experience seems that complex point in time recoveries might pose some challenges in case a fault has occurred. Worked with oracle backup recoveries and liked the SCN based recoveries which leaves a room to go to a certain point back in time if last back is not good. How it is handled in Acronics, any ideas?
