User-friendly and good technical support, but the initial setup is complex
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is the extra protection, especially for the backup."
  • "The biggest problem that we have is when the antivirus is installed, the whole machine runs very slowly and some of the machines hang."

What is our primary use case?

We are using this product to back up our HDS node, which is part of a six-node cluster.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the extra protection, especially for the backup.

The interface is user-friendly.

What needs improvement?

The biggest problem that we have is when the antivirus is installed, the whole machine runs very slowly and some of the machines hang. We had installed it on 500 machines, but when our customer started having issues, we uninstalled it. It seems that it is not able to work on the servers.

Our customers were disappointed with this product and discontinued the service.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Acronis for the past three years.

Good security, user friendly, and simple buying options and deployments
Pros and Cons
  • "It has simple buying options and deployments. You can buy on-cloud, on-premises, or hybrid solutions. Acronis Backup is very easy to deploy. It also does not consume much hardware. • "They can include something called a backup appliance. Although Acronis is a software-driven company, it would be good for customers to have some kind of backup appliance on top of a lightweight operating system. This will also reduce the cost. What is most valuable?

It has simple buying options and deployments. You can buy on-cloud, on-premises, or hybrid solutions. Acronis Backup is very easy to deploy. It also does not consume much hardware. The administrator's tasks are very simple.

It is very user friendly, and it also has good security features with low-level encryption and data encryption.

What needs improvement?

They can include something called a backup appliance. Although Acronis is a software-driven company, it would be good for customers to have some kind of backup appliance on top of a lightweight operating system. This will also reduce the cost. Currently, the customers have to buy the hardware in addition to the operating system, which increases the overhead in terms of procurement.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have started selling Acronis solutions six or seven months ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable and scalable. We have not had any complaints from the customers.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I am yet to explore it in terms of scalability in the enterprise environment. It is mostly being used in small companies.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not yet contacted them.

How was the initial setup?

It is quite simple to deploy. I have my own team for its maintenance. There are four or five qualified engineers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is very cost-effective for the SMB segment, especially for start-ups and smaller environments. It is cost-effective for on-premises and on-cloud deployments in such environments.

What other advice do I have?

We have recently started to sell Acronis solutions. We have been helping customers to understand what Acronis is all about. We give demos to our customers, and customers are quite happy with the demo and cost of Acronis. Overall, it is a good product.

I would recommend this solution for smaller environments. It is mostly being used in small companies. Enterprise customers also usually use it for small projects. I haven't explored it for customers with a really big environment. For big enterprise customers, there are other solutions, like Veritas NetBackup, that provide scalability and support for big infrastructures.

I would rate Acronis Backup an eight out of ten.

Our primary use case is to find agents.

What needs improvement?

I would like to have more hardware space. It would make it better. I would like to have two more terabytes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I started using Acronis six months ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Restore point gives us what we need at the time we need it
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the features I have found most valuable is the restore point - it gives us what we need at the time we need it. The important thing is that the backup for Acronis doesn't depend as much on the device."
  • "For smaller companies it's a little more challenging to maintain."

What is most valuable?

One of the features I have found most valuable is the restore point - it gives us what we need at the time we need it. The important thing is that the backup for Acronis doesn't depend as much on the device.

Another reason we use Acronis is that it allows you to back up a lot of data without losing too much on the time delay during the backup. Also, the amount of data that you can back up for one price is much better than other solutions where the price depends on the amount of the data being backed up.

The speed of the backup solution depends a lot on the speed being deployed on the customer side. For some customers, Acronis is a much better solution.

What needs improvement?

For some customers, it doesn't just depend on the type of product that you use, but on the infrastructure of the customer as well. Some customers don't have the potential or the infrastructure to support a cloud-based solution as a backup. That's why he had to go to on-premises and use a hybrid solution, which is why using SolarWind for our customers.

So for smaller companies, it's a little more challenging to maintain. But it's hard to say because you could have a very small company, but they have the potential of moving everything using a cloud infrastructure because they have the local infrastructure ready to support that kind of service. But another company may not have the infrastructure to support that kind of service. There are many factors for what kind of services are good for one customer and not good for another one, including the speed of data transfer that the customer can allow. That will determine if you're going to use a backup cloud solution versus a hybrid solution.

Actually, with Acronis, you can back up almost everything that you need to back up, including the engine database. So I don't see what else we could add to that solution for improvement.

When I look from the customer's perspective, everything is there. What could be good is just to have a simple package that could be appropriate for small companies who don't have the requirements for using the cloud solution. Maybe they could just have something a little more on-premises that could allow Acronis to do the customer's backup and then bring it to the cloud. That could be something that Acronis could try because everything now seems to be going to the cloud.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Acronis Backup for at least eight months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is nice. It's good. I love it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I like Acronis Backup's scalability. It is very easy. Acronis gives you a lot of options.

How are customer service and technical support?

Up to now I didn't have to reach technical support for any kind of problem with Acronis because up to now I never had any problem.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. You just deploy the program and the setup. Then you just have to specify what you need to backup with the schedule that you want. That's it.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten I would give Acronis Backup a nine.

A full software service product with quick deployment but lacking in technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "This is a full software so deployment time is very quick."
  • "No technical support and minimal documentation."

What is our primary use case?

I'm a solutions consultant and we're a customer of Acronis.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the solution for me is that it's a full software as a service product so deployment time will be very quick.

What needs improvement?

We're based in Hong Kong and I think if Acronis could provide local support and some local consultants that would be an improvement. I've just carried out the trial on the solution and actually there is no technical support available for this product. There is also minimal documentation available and if that could be improved it would make a big difference.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using a trial version of the product for two months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the product is fine. It's a cloud product so you just purchase online. For now, I'm the only one in the company using the solution. Once testing is complete that will change.

How was the initial setup?

I'm using the software as a service, so there's no installation.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution a seven out of 10.

Does its job very well and has interesting capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "It actually does its job very well and has interesting capabilities, but it has the most awful interface."
  • "The whole product structure is confusing. You can actually get to do what you want to do. But Acronis seems to have a singular ability to make things difficult."

What is our primary use case?

We implement Acronis for our clients and we also use it internally.

What is most valuable?

It actually does its job very well and has interesting capabilities, but it has the most awful interface.

It's like there hasn't been any clear thought of linking process to the interface model. It's a very frustrating product but what it does, it does well, which is why even for all of those reasons we still standardize on it as our preferred backup solution. But it drives us mad.

What needs improvement?

I'll be completely honest, it's a very annoying product.

The whole product structure is confusing. You can actually get to do what you want to do. But Acronis seems to have a singular ability to make things difficult.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Acronis Backup for a few years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. We have around ten to fifteen users. The users are a combination of end-users and admins.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is excellent.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is slightly complex because the interface design is poor. So certainly, we've often had to scrap our strategies and go back and redo them. I would say that it's slightly complex to get to what you want.

You have to recognize that you might have to go and do it again once or twice until you get it working exactly the way you want it to work.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend it, but warn people new to it, to be aware that they might well be a bit frustrated at first.

I would rate Acronis Backup an eight out of ten. It's one of those products that probably needs an overhaul because it's kind of evolved over time and sometimes when you evolve things, you end up in a hole. It's probably about time for them to sit back and realize that they've made all this functionality and made all these changes so they should go back.

Also, managing the product is difficult. As a partner, it's difficult to manage our end-user clients because there's no single dashboard where we can go and see our clients and manage them individually. You have to set up an individual setup for each client, which is a bit frustrating.

I would like to see improvements for people that are probably doing an MSP type of approach, managed service providers so that they had a much simpler way to view their end-user situations.

Backup & Recovery Tool for System Administrators

In any network and system environment, backup and recovery is one of the most crucial, critical and inevitably important and demanding task. There are two products (Norton Ghost & Acronis True Image) which are top of the line in terms of granularity and flexibility. Reliable and rapid recovery is one of the system administrators’ strong needs in deployed domains.

I had used Norton Ghost v.9 quite for some time and the sole purpose for usage was client pc’s restoration in case of HDD failure caused by malfunction, viral activity or any other reason for system drive corruption. Though both Ghost and Acronis provide excellent recovery from scratch for partition recovery to full HDD and Logical Volume backup and restore for almost all Microsoft operating systems (MS Small Business Server, MS Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012 and downstream to Windows Xp), moreover both support for Linux flavors like Ubuntu, Fedora and RHEL 6.

As a regular user of Acronis True image now for windows domain which consist of 74 pc's, with identical hardware and software considerations I found the Acronis true image as an best solution for backup & recovery and optimum tool for any HDD cloning.(Domain Controller with Windows 2003 R2 64 bit operating system on it without any limitation).

I found Acronis to be the best solution for following salient reasons:

1. Acronis UI is simple and easy to understand for novice user as well as advance user .All important tasks focused on one page.

2. True image is providing far more granular facilities like file and folder recovery.

3. Acronis doesn’t require .NET framework 2.x as Norton Ghost.

4. Acronis provides bootable support for Linux as compared to Norton Ghost and NovaStor Backup.

5. Acronis provided unlimited number of backups and doesn’t limit.

6. Network Drive backup is also supported for backup through Acronis True Image.

7. Image size of Acronis is less than image created through Norton Ghost.

8. Acronis keeps all of its incremental and full backups in Acronis Secure Zone which is inaccessible by malware, user interventions or any possible corruption of the image for backup. Secure zone is a propriety partition which is referred as ASZ only accessible by Acronis Backup and Recovery.

9. Recovery disk can be created on almost any type of portable device i.e. USB memory stick, external HDD, Zip drive etc.

Possible Cons:

Help Support is far less than Norton Ghost.

Domain Controller HDD image created through Acronis might pose problems like rejoining of the client pc to domain ,

Reliability in case of Active directory partition, MS SQL Server, Exchange Server is doubtful.

I am using Acronis bootable USB stick with image on it and almost saving 3 hrs. of manhours of our technical staff. One of other benefit which my Windows Domain gets is restoration of image on different hardware with Acronis Universal Restore.

An established and consistent product but is lacking in cutting-edge features
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is its consistency."
  • "This is not a feature-rich solution."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to backup some core, critical systems in our primary data center.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is its consistency. It is an established product.

What needs improvement?

I feel like this product a little bit locked in the past.

This is not a feature-rich solution.

I would like to see a more SaaS-based solution, perhaps more cloud-centric. Essentially, keeping in lock-step with the other companies out there doing platform (PaaS) or software (SaaS) as a service, solutions.

We would like a more cutting edge, cloud-based DR solution that uses, for example, compression algorithms to make sure that backups run faster.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have never had scalability problems with it.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not directly spoken with technical support.

What about the implementation team?

We leverage all of our operations through what used to be Dell Services but is now known as NTT Data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Our licensing fees are on a yearly basis.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did an evaluation of many different solutions, primarily because we were moving from more on-premise to cloud-based solutions. So, as a result of going to the cloud, we looked at the Best of Breed in the cloud space.

Ultimately, we implemented two solutions. We use a Veeam cloud backup appliance solution and a leveraged TSM environment for our core operations provider. It was decided based on cost flexibility and technology richness.

What other advice do I have?

Because this solution is not feature-rich, we have looked at other solutions.

My advice for somebody who wants to implement this solution is to make sure that they understand the requirements. This includes the RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and the RPO (Recovery Point Objective). Based on the requirements, find the solution that is going to fit best for what they really want to invest in.

I would rate this solution a six out of ten.
