It's an all-inclusive solution, so that makes everything neat
Pros and Cons
  • "NAV covers everything from purchasing and selling items to invoicing. Everything is within NAV, so it's all very neat."
  • "If Microsoft made some of the security setups a little easier to work with, that would be a significant improvement. The warehouse management features could also use some work. We had to buy third-party software to make NAV's warehouse management and security more usable and functional."

What is our primary use case?

We use NAV to run our entire business.

How has it helped my organization?

NAV covers everything from purchasing and selling items to invoicing. Everything is within NAV, so it's all very neat.

What is most valuable?

NAV provides a framework that you can build on and customize to fit your business needs

What needs improvement?

Some people might be disappointed to find that NAV isn't a turnkey solution. It's just a framework for you to build on. It has been challenging to get some of our more peculiar business practices to work in the system.

And if Microsoft made some of the security setups a little easier to work with, that would be a significant improvement. The warehouse management features could also use some work. We had to buy third-party software to make NAV's warehouse management and security more usable and functional.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using it for seven years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

NAV is solid. It runs great.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's effortless to scale NAV up.

How are customer service and support?

We haven't had to Microsoft for support on anything. So far, the vendor has helped us with any issues that came up.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had a simple accounting system before, and we wrote our own warehouse management system to work with that. We switched to NAV when we found out the other system would no longer be supported. The appeal of NAV was that it's all-inclusive, so we didn't need 15 different programs to keep the business running. We do everything in NAV now.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

NAV might be a little pricey for a small or medium-sized company, but all the solutions out there are.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Dynamics NAV eight out of 10. If you're going to implement NAV, make sure you have a reputable partner who knows the solution. It's a long and detailed process, so you need partners with experience and a track record. Our first go-around was pretty much a failure. We had to fire our first vendor and bring in a second to get everything running right.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

It is easy to use and implement, and it works very well for small companies
Pros and Cons
  • "It is easy to use, and it works very well for small-scale companies."
  • "I would like a more modular and user-friendly interface."

What is our primary use case?

Its use cases depend on the country. It is generally used for enterprise resource management and sales and marketing.

There are both on-prem and cloud deployments.

What is most valuable?

It is easy to use, and it works very well for small-scale companies.

What needs improvement?

I would like a more modular and user-friendly interface.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it for about three years, but the company has been using it for more than 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I am satisfied with its performance and stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have around 300 users. It fits small-scale companies very well.

How are customer service and support?

We have sometimes contacted them through the vendor. They are very fast in dealing with their support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were not using any other solution previously. NAV was here from the beginning of time. It is a very old one, and it has developed over time.

How was the initial setup?

It is very easy to implement.

What about the implementation team?

We did use some technicians. Usually, you need functional and technical experts for it.

The number of people required varies. It is on a small scale for us. So, two people are enough for us. We have an expert in Navision, and we also have a technical expert who can do the backend.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its licensing is yearly. In addition to the licensing cost, there is the cost of hosting on Azure.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others. I would rate it a nine out of 10.

Dynamics AX and Dynamics NAV Projects at a tech vendor with 1,001-5,000 employees
Vendor
Allows the creation of intercompany journals and buy/sell invoices. It also allows the creation and transferring of intercompany purchase/sales orders.

What is most valuable?

Usability and UX/UI functionality. These features make implementation of projects much simpler. It allows smoother adoption of the new system and processes.

How has it helped my organization?

NAV supports inter-company activities for two areas: Finance and orders.

  • The finance part allows creating intercompany journals and intercompany buy/sell invoices.
  • The orders part allows creating and transferring intercompany purchase/sales orders. The operation is semi-manual.

What needs improvement?

  • Inter-company functionality: Relatively shallow and mostly manual
  • Alerts: Many customers are required to define system generated alerts. These are based on data changes and due dates by the user as personalization. This function does not exist.
  • One has to send the inter-company document to the outbox, process the outbox at the receiving company, process the inbox, and then create the document. This process is somewhat long and requires several steps.
  • The system does not support the synchronizing of modifications and bi-directional updates.
  • The most significant issue is the lack of the inter-company logistic functionality. It is not possible to send/receive shipping documents, serial numbers, and lot numbers.
  • Users require the ability to define alert rules that will trigger the receipt of alerts from the system if the alert condition is met. For example, if a customer's balance exceeds USD10,000, then send me a notification. The "big brother" Dynamics AX, does have this functionality, and it is very useful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Dynamics NAV for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have not seen any stability issues. My projects were based on 0 to 150 users and there were no such problems.

How was the initial setup?

The ease of the initial setup, data conversion, and rapid start are the strengths of this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Do not compromise on the level of the consultants to reduce costs. Skilled staff will do things better and faster.

What other advice do I have?

Minimize customizations and maintain a solid change management plan.

It's a highly stable product, but it's not very scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "I like Microsoft Dynamics' simplicity. The interface is excellent, and it's a highly mature product. You can hardly find any bugs in the product."
  • "I wouldn't say that Microsoft Dynamics is very scalable."

What is our primary use case?

Microsoft Dynamics is primarily used in financial or service companies. It isn't suitable for manufacturing.

What is most valuable?

I like Microsoft Dynamics' simplicity. The interface is excellent, and it's a highly mature product. You can hardly find any bugs in the product.

The Microsoft brand is also crucial. When you pitch this solution, customers know Microsoft and understand the advantage of native integration between Microsoft products and MS Dynamics Business Central. Another thing is customization. We can easily build a custom solution if somebody wants one.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft Dynamics is higly stable.  It's a mature product, so there aren't any bugs.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I wouldn't say that Microsoft Dynamics is very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Microsoft provides the tech support, so there aren't any problems.

How was the initial setup?

Installation is on the cloud. Microsoft provides it, so I don't have to deal with the installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is okay. License subscription prices are okay.

What other advice do I have?

My overall rating for Microsoft Dynamics NAV is five or six out of 10. Some things are good, and a few things are bad.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A useful enterprise resource planning app that makes data more manageable
Pros and Cons
  • "Our data is much more manageable than before."
  • "Customization and costs could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use Microsoft Dynamics NAV for everything that the software has to offer. Some accounting, financing, a little bit of CRM, order processing, marketing sales, and ERP.

How has it helped my organization?

Microsoft Dynamics NAV has helped us reduce the amount of paper used within the organization.

What is most valuable?

Everything seems to be useful for each production department. We have everything recorded in the database, so our data is much more manageable than before. That's one of the greatest advantages.

What needs improvement?

Customization and costs could be improved. Customization is a little complex, so we don't do that. We just use the basic features provided there. We also don't have a theme to customize it as it costs a lot.

In terms of what I see from the IT department, it would help if we could create an application within Dynamics NAV itself, like a dashboard, which we could customize ourselves.

It'll also help if they had documentation to help with API programming. I have a hard time finding the documentation about it. We need to drill down through the output and input of the structures they gave us, and I can't find a detailed explanation of the objects and properties.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Microsoft Dynamics NAV for about seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of Microsoft Dynamics NAV is quite good. I think on a scale from one to ten; I'm going to give it a seven or an eight as it depends on the database.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability depends on the hardware as the software is really simple. Scalability also depends on the database.

How are customer service and technical support?

Our Microsoft partner here is quite responsive whenever we call them.

How was the initial setup?

At first, the initial setup feels complex, and we have to do some modeling to know how to deploy it. We've been studying it, and it's becoming quite easy compared to SAP.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The first time we tried to buy the newest version, it was expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise potential users to get whatever data is needed to implement this. The partnership should give you whatever you need, according to your experience.

Just ask what's the requirement and follow the partner's guide. It's already a step-by-step process. It's not going to be very difficult to follow. They will explain what's required of us as the customer and what data we should put there.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Microsoft Dynamics NAV an eight.
