Reliable, easy to set up, and the quality of technical support is good
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature for me is reliability."
  • "Having support available that is more compatible with time zones in the United States would be helpful."

What is our primary use case?

I am an independent contractor and I work to set up and maintain wireless network systems. Ruckus Wireless is one of the solutions that I rely on.

I am working with a small school that has a Ruckus wireless system in place to provide service for mobile devices. In that site, we have the main controller and six or seven access points.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature for me is reliability. It works.

What needs improvement?

I have had trouble with signal strength and coverage in the school setting, which is in part due to the construction. I have an access point in the hallway and in every classroom.

Having support available that is more compatible with time zones in the United States would be helpful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Ruckus wireless for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't had any issues with the stability of the signal. It either makes the connection or it doesn't.

How are customer service and support?

It is sometimes difficult to reach technical support when you need it. For example, recently I was able to get through to somebody rather quickly when I had to repair a wireless system that had gone down. At other times, it will be five or six hours before somebody returns my call. This can be a problem when I am already at a client site because I can't sit there and charge the client while I was for Ruckus to call me back. However, I have also had the same experience with Cisco.

Quality-wise, the person that I recently dealt with in regards to an RMA was outstanding.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. Getting improved coverage is often just a matter of moving the devices around.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

The school is at a point where they either have to expand their Ruckus system or instead replace it entirely with one from Cisco. However, given the money that they've got invested in Ruckess equipment, I don't know that replacing it is a prudent choice.

What other advice do I have?

In summary, I think that Ruckus is a good product. I'm a fan and I recommend them.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

BeamFlex works well in changing environments, bouncing WiFi signals around obstacles
Pros and Cons
  • "BeamFlex works great in changing environments by bouncing WiFi signals around obstacles."
  • "They need more products in the lower-end range for smaller clients."

What is our primary use case?

We are a Ruckus Big Dog reseller. We sell and install into small retail shops that want to market their free public WiFi hotspot, manufacturing environments where new obstacles are constantly introduced, offices that need LAN-like WiFi, hotels, and event centers that need high capacity installations with 200-500 people per AP.

How has it helped my organization?

It requires very little maintenance (unlike competitive products we have sold) and provides a consistently great WiFi environment.

What is most valuable?

BeamFlex works great in changing environments by bouncing WiFi signals around obstacles.

What needs improvement?

They need more products in the lower-end range for smaller clients.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Very stable. We have this in very dense environments (like stadiums and manufacturing floors). The only issue we had is that Apple devices hate band-steering so you should setup separate 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz SSIDs.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues with scalability. The product scales very well and eliminates co-channel interference. Very easy to add licenses to the controller to scale larger or add redundant controllers.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is about a seven out of 10.  Not bad, but not wow. Better than most. We don’t need support often.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

  • Cisco enterprise - expensive and complicated, more APs needed to cover an area.
  • HPE Colubris - unreliable.

How was the initial setup?

Pretty straightforward, if you know what you’re doing with wireless. The only thing that is tricky is understanding that the controller does not get installed on a trunk port (different than most other solutions).

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is very competitive for an enterprise solution.

Licensing: Always carry the support contract on the controller (not needed on APs).

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Just about everything out there. It was between Ruckus and Aerohive, but ultimately, Ruckus BeamFlex performed better with our testing (fewer APs needed, worked around obstacles in changing warehouse environments, supported high density).

What other advice do I have?

It's a very good product, excellent technology that requires fewer access points than competitors, it's easy to manage, and cost competitive (compared with other enterprise WiFi solutions).

Try it by using the virtual controller or the unleashed product (controller equivalent on an AP).

We use it for WiFi in our company.

What is most valuable?

There can be the same SSID for several devices.

What needs improvement?

The software should be made more stable.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for three or four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is better than before.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is enough. There are 10 to 20 users per device.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is enough for us.

How was the initial setup?

It was straightforward. The deployment took one week or two weeks.

Stable, great in interior and exterior environments, and offers a strong signal
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is very simple."
  • "The pricing of the product can be a bit expensive. They should work on making pricing more competitive."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution internally and also help clients set up the product for their companies.

It's a frequency. They will provide the tool and stable wireless frequencies.

How has it helped my organization?

The throughput has been excellent.

What is most valuable?

The solution does not disconnect, which is extremely helpful, especially when you are working from home.

The signal, strength-wise, is its most valuable aspect. These frequencies pass through touch one to 200 voltage. The distortion will not affect this product. That's why we suggest it to our clients.

The initial setup is very simple.

We have found the solution to be very stable. It's great in interior and exterior environments.

The scalability is great.

What needs improvement?

The pricing of the product can be a bit expensive. They should work on making pricing more competitive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution since 2015.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable product. The product is very good and very reliable and functions well in indoor and outdoor settings.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the product is quite good.

In my organization, right now, we have 35 workers and we are planning to move our office. There will be 5,200 people there.

We do plan to increase usage.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support could be better. They should also have it so that it's included and you should not have to pay extra for it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also familiar with Aruba. Compared to Aruba, the frequency will not disconnect.

We tried Cisco, also, however, we heard that it's not a good product. Price-wise, they're really cheap, however, they are not a better product.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is extremely simple and straightforward. It's not overly complex or difficult. Typically, one access point can be deployed in 15 minutes.

The solution doesn't really need much maintenance. We have used it for seven or eight years without incident.

What about the implementation team?

Our engineers are able to implement the solution for our clients. We can implement it for ourselves in-house using our team. We can easily mount the materials.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is very expensive. Technical support should also be included in the pricing.

We tend to deal with yearly licensing renewal fees. We buy packages in bundles and then, every year, we need to pay to renew.

What other advice do I have?

We are Ruckus partners. We are systems integrators.

I'm not sure which version of the solution we're using at this time.

I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Easy to use, overall good functionality, and simple to manage
Pros and Cons
  • "Ruckus Wireless is more of a plain Wi-Fi solution where it does the basic job well. Additionally, it has good conductivity, easy to use, simple to manage, and its access points can be used as standalone devices which gives flexibility in the SMB market."
  • "The solution lacks a lot of features other solutions provide. If you are an organization that is more focused on security or you need a lot of other features, such as location tracking then Ruckus Wireless may not be the right choice. If you want a solution with more than basic security I would choose Arista or Aruba."

What is our primary use case?

Ruckus Wireless is used for networking and security. They have both cloud-based and on-premise controllers available. You often see this solution in the hospitality sector.

What is most valuable?

Ruckus Wireless is more of a plain Wi-Fi solution where it does the basic job well. Additionally, it has good conductivity, easy to use, simple to manage, and its access points can be used as standalone devices which gives flexibility in the SMB market.

What needs improvement?

The solution lacks a lot of features other solutions provide. If you are an organization that is more focused on security or you need a lot of other features, such as location tracking then Ruckus Wireless may not be the right choice. If you want a solution with more than basic security I would choose Arista or Aruba.

Ruckus has gone through too many changes in their management, and in the last four or five years, they have been lacking feature sets that others provide. Additionally, the integration, network security, and BLE features need to be improved. There are key features they are still lacking.

For how long have I used the solution?

I used Ruckus Wireless within the past 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is highly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Ruckus Wireless is scalable. However, in terms of the scalability of the controller, there is always a limit on the number of access points or clients the hardware can support. If the access points are placed in a decent place with multiple options of controllers everything works well.

Ruckus Wireless is the best fit for the SMB market which they have a dominant presence.

We have deployed the solution in an educational institute and in a restaurant that has a lodging segment and a coworking space.

How are customer service and support?

I have not faced any problems with the solution to need to contact the technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is straightforward. It can be done in a short period of time.

What about the implementation team?

Once you deploy Ruckus Wireless correctly, there is no maintenance required. It is close to maintenance-free, except for some operational jobs which depend upon what the customer may want and that is where you need human intervention.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you walk into any restaurant or hotel you will find Ruckus Wireless solutions because it is economical when it comes to pricing. There is a basic subscription for the license and support.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated Arista and Aruba.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Ruckus Wireless to anyone who is looking for a plain Wi-Fi solution. If you want Wi-Fi that will provide wireless connectivity that is good and stable, this is the solution to pick. If you need a solution with a lot of features for the network, such as wireless intrusion prevention or internal location tracking, there are other solutions that you should look for.

I rate Ruckus Wireless an eight out of ten.

Requires less equipment, offers good pricing and is very stable
Pros and Cons
  • "The product has good technical support and offers excellent documentation."
  • "The solution needs to have some sort of security offering, like a firewall, for example."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for internal use for deployments.

How has it helped my organization?

I don't have specific metrics that could describe who this solution has improved how the company operates. It just offers better connections for the users.

What is most valuable?

The product does a very good job of covering specific areas using less equipment than other providers.

The solution offers better coverage. It offers a better footprint in order to connect with the user.

The possibility to deploy the solution and the configuration of all the equipment through the console makes everything very easy.

The product has good technical support and offers excellent documentation.

What needs improvement?

In both cases in terms of the latest deployments we initiated, we implemented a new version, which means that in both cases the client deployed a new Wi-Fi infrastructure. As we deployed the solution, it meant that the users had to connect to the network via a patch cord.

The solution needs to have some sort of security offering, like a firewall, for example. Fortinet offers access to security via Wi-Fi controls and a management console. Ruckus does not do this.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for 20 years. It's been a good two decades of usage. In just the last six months, we've implemented it for two clients.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is excellent. There aren't issues with glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. There aren't bugs. It's completely reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very, very good. We have no issues expanding as we need to. It's excellent.

We typically work with medium-sized Argentinian companies. In one of the implementations we handled in the past year, the client already wants to increase the coverage of the Wi-Fi network for the next year.

How are customer service and technical support?

In general, we get good technical support from Ruckus. It's excellent service. In all the cases where we have reported some problems, we receive the answer about how to resolve the problem very quickly. They are extremely responsive and very knowledgeable. We've very happy with their services.

How was the initial setup?

The initial implementation was easy. We had already deployed Ruckus for the client previously, and we were just doing another new deployment. It was very straightforward.

The deployment took about a month due to the fact that we needed the client to deploy the cable network. They had to finish the network before we could really finish our portion of the implementation. In another deployment, for a different client, it only took us two weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is less expensive than, for example, Fortinet, and requires less equipment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In the first implementation, we did recently, the client decided to implement the Ruckus without any comparison with other solutions.

In the second implementation, we had an evaluation done and we looked at Fortinet. The client decided to implement Ruckus over Fortinet. The decision was mainly based on the different pricing between the two options and the need for access points with Ruckus. With Ruckus, we needed fewer appliances in order to bring the same coverage that Fortinet offered, for example.

What other advice do I have?

We're a partner with Ruckus.

In both of the most recent deployments, we have used the Access Point R320.

Ruckus as a brand is pretty new to the Argentinian market, and therefore, we need to introduce our clients to their offering. We really need to show off the benefits of going with Ruckus over, for example, Fortinet, which is more well known.

Overall, I would rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Reliable, has exceptional coverage, and it is straightforward to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is the coverage, which is exceptional."
  • "I would like to see newer on-premises controller-type models, similar to the 3000."

What is our primary use case?

I am a Ruckus reseller and this wireless product is one that we provide for our customers.

My customers are all in industrial environments, so I have worked with a lot of different controller-based models. I primarily handle warehouse management and manufacturing, so these are installed in big warehouses, the oil sector, solar-powered Wi-Fi, and other businesses.

Many of the wireless devices are by vendors like Honeywell and Zebra. They are handheld units and the network packet size is small.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the coverage, which is exceptional.

What needs improvement?

I feel that the vendor needs to have better control of who is selling the product online, especially when the reseller doesn't know anything about the product. It is frustrating when customers tell me that they have found it on Amazon for a cheaper price.

I would like to see newer on-premises controller-type models, similar to the 3000.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with Ruckus Wireless for about nine years, since 2011. I have about 24 years of experience with wireless solutions in general.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't had any issues with maintenance, long-term. They have never had any trouble holding up in the environment that they're in.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Ruckus is excellent. I have some very, very large customers.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience working with Cisco, Aruba, and other types of Wi-Fi that my customers have installed.

How was the initial setup?

For somebody who knows what they're doing, the initial setup is very straightforward.

Sometimes, people take an easy approach to implementing the system, but it is not as efficient as it could be. Generally, I find that you can put it in the easy way or the right way, and you need to have a little more skill than just plugging it in to get it working efficiently.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is considering this solution is not to become obsessed with bandwidth or throughput. It is more important to look at coverage and roaming capabilities than simply the bandwidth. I find that when it comes to schools, people who are implementing wireless usually overdo it.

For me, this is the best wireless product on the market. Every customer where I have put it in to replace an existing system loves it.

I would rate this solution a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
