We can now restore a single email box with all of its folder contents
Pros and Cons
  • "It has helped us transfer the solution in two days instead of working for a minimum of one week to ten days."
  • "I would like for them to develop the ability to fix the way it does backups. We can't pick a backup for one database. We have to do a backup on the whole Exchange VM. I'd like for them to change it to where we can do individual backups."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for a backup solution for our front-end servers.

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved my organization by 90%. Now we can restore a single box with all of its folder contents. We could install one email, one folder or one lead and it could have still one email. This has helped us a lot. Before we used to store the entire database and then we would go to the single mailbox we need to use and we could restore it. Now we could do it instantly whereas it used to take three to four days.

What is most valuable?

We migrated our servers from physical to virtual with our B2B platform. We had a big problem when trying to transfer our site server that was about six terabytes to the new environments. We wanted to do it with minimal effort and without changing the permission because if we do a copy, the permissions won't work. We put a Veeam Windows agent on these physical servers, did a backup and then we were able to take this backup as a drive that is connected to the new VM environment. It has helped us transfer the solution in two days instead of working for a minimum of one week to ten days.

What needs improvement?

I would like for them to develop the ability to fix the way it does backups. We can't pick a backup for one database. We have to do a backup on the whole Exchange VM. I'd like for them to change it to where we can do individual backups.

I would like for it to work with Oracle VM.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. It has worked well since we deployed it. We haven't had any problems until now. It's currently used daily. We do backups daily, weekly and monthly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. We are planning to increase usage. We are planning to buy new Oracle hardware and plan to add them to the same solution. It doesn't work with Oracle VM which is an issue.

We currently have 500 users that include top management, financial people, and engineers.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support is good. They respond within a 20-hour timeframe. The issue that comes up with them is that our weekends don't overlap. We have off Friday and Saturday and they have off Saturday and Sunday so when we submit a request it can take a long time for them to respond. I would rate their technical support a seven out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had been previously using HP Data Protector. We switched to virtualization. We switched to Veeam because the person who promoted it explained its benefits well.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. The company that we hired came in and installed it without a hitch. Now we can use it efficiently without their help. The deployment took one day. We did have a problem when we started working with it. The difference between the restore points wasn't clear. Up until this point, we're still not sure what effect it has on our backup. I would like this to be made more clear. It's easier for us to directly put it on tapes than to first put it on storage.

As far as our deployment strategy went, we started with building our jobs. We took our jobs and tried to plan them on the system and we took VMs instead of files. It has worked up until now. After a month or so we did need to make some changes to some of our jobs.

What about the implementation team?

Our integrator is one who generally deals with IBM and Lenovo hardware in Egypt and we were the first case they had working with a Veeam solution. They listened to what we needed and what we were asking for. We need on the job training so we needed their help for the first month or so after the installation. The engineer was very helpful in guiding us through the deployment. He was very professional. He helped us at the beginning but after a certain point, we had some issues and he would tell us that he'd get back to us but he never did. He was busy and didn't prioritize us because we're not his main customer. We turned for support from Veeam themselves and they were responsive and helped us.

It requires two staff members for maintenance. They're two engineers that act as backup for each other. We really only need one engineer to administer everything but if he's not there, the other one is there as backup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is good and affordable.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise someone considering this solution to find a good implementor who can help you during and after the implementation.

I would rate it a nine out of ten. It's a good product that we can rely on, it has many features and works on many platforms. It's a very good product.

Little to few failed backups and the replication feature has been very useful to instantly recover a VM

What is our primary use case?

VMware backup, but considering to implement Veeam's replication feature to use as part of our DR solution.

How has it helped my organization?

Reliable and easy-to-use backup and restore. Version 9.5 has been the most reliable with little to few failed backups.

What is most valuable?

Replication feature is very useful to instantly recover a VM. Not only can Veeam be used for backups, but also for DR usage as well.

What needs improvement?

Version 9.5 has been proven to be reliable, and U3a VMware 6.7 works without issues. Maybe synchronous replication.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

It's reliable and performs complete backups effortlessly. However, it could use a storage application.
Pros and Cons
  • "It helps with process restoration. With Veeam, we never had backup or restoration issues."
  • "I would like to see a storage application in the next version of the product."

How has it helped my organization?

It helps with process restoration. With Veeam, we never had backup or restoration issues. It is always good when performing complete backups. It always restores, when needed.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see a storage application in the next version of the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability depends upon your configuration.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I don't have a problem with Veeam's scalability.

How is customer service and technical support?

As long as you have enough storage and CPU, they know how to resolve it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is slightly higher than its competitors.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam is what it is supposed to be.

Gold standard for backup and recovery
Pros and Cons
  • "Veeam is the gold standard for backup and recovery. The ease of use and reliability of this solution are real assets. Also, it has an ease of use to work with a third party vendor."
  • "The virtual sandboxes seem complex to setup, so I have not invested time in leveraging this feature. It would be nice if this feature was more user-friendly."

What is most valuable?

The ease of use and reliability of this solution are real assets. Also, it has an ease of use to work with a third party vendor.

What needs improvement?

The virtual sandboxes seem complex to setup so I have not invested time in leveraging this feature. It would be nice if this feature was more user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This product has been very stable. Any issues that have come up are quickly resolved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not experienced issues with scalability. I have deployed Veeam in two different environments for different employers of mine and both have been very solid. I am currently using ExaGrid as my backend storage and it has worked very well with Veeam.

How is customer service and technical support?

I would give the tech support team a rating of nine out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. I actually had a POC backing up our entire data center to an old SAN setup within a day.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam is the gold standard for backup and recovery. If you have a primary virtualized environment, it is a great choice. Veeam's agent for physical servers works well on our few remaining physical servers.

User-friendly backup of the whole virtual server
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important part is that you actually know you have a backup of the whole virtual server."
  • "I have also been struggling with the storage and in some cases I need to move things due to performance."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Veeam at our college and we have been connected for a while now. We use it for backing up virtual servers in the Hyperwave and it is working very well. It works well for backing up services. We can backup Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Sharepoint and it is actually easy to understand how to restore from it. It has an easy UI.

How has it helped my organization?

The most important part is that we know we have a backup of the whole virtual server. We can restore the whole server if we want, or just take some specific files. I like this duality of the product. That's how I put it on virtualized software.

What needs improvement?

The most important improvement would be for it to be updated to support new servers and we actually are in a situation that we are going to connect our Exchange service to a new one. They have to actually support new software as they are released and I think Veeam has promised to support new Windows upgrades which is important .

If they had some more agents for physical computers, that would also be a nice feature.

I have also been struggling with the storage, and in some cases I need to move things due to performance. We can use replication and we hope that this will help us continue with Veeam.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is very stable. I have been struggling with the storage now and that's not Veeam's fault, but sometimes I have problems with it. We are short on storage right now, but because of some performance issues we have to reserve a room at our location and the connection between those two rooms is not great. I hope I found the cause of that problem so in this situation we actually have been struggling with storage. I know that Veeam has support for more storage. If there was a snapshot functionality on Veeam, it would help. I think we cannot use the replication part of the solution but I think we are going to use it more now when they have more of the location sites, and replicate to the different locations.

How is customer service and technical support?

I know they have good support, but I haven't been using them very often. I'd like to try and figure out what the problem is myself. I know that we have a contract to use their help. Mostly I use the support for upgrades to new versions. I don't contact Veeam support very often.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. It was easy to install. If you miss some plugins for Windows, you actually can click "okay" and it's on the installation media. The installation is very easy.

What was our ROI?

It is a cheap solution with the ability to backup for our needs.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is great. It's software related, and I know that might be a good thing because it's a cheap solution to buy and we have been looking for a program for backup and they fit the bill. The price of Veeam and its software related products enable you to have your own hardware. You can use your own infrastructure and you can actually buy what you want. This is cost-effective. It might be that if you buy something else and they have media things it's very expensive but it works very well. If your company has pressure to actually get back data very quickly, it might not be possible with this solution. Our college environment doesn't seem to have this problem. There has not been much down time but I think if the server is broken, it just restores within an hour and everything returns back to normal.

What other advice do I have?

You can actually use the infrastructure you already have so you don't have to buy new hardware to actually start using it. That's the most important part about this solution.

Optimal calculations for storage systems for operation and backup on DCV, HCI

What is our primary use case?

Transforming from the physical system to virtualization -- vSphere or Hyper-V, KVM and then monitoring reporting infrastructure.

How has it helped my organization?

The most important problem in the data center system is to monitor and calculate real-time, to be able to accurately forecast or monitor for troubleshooting (not all software can do it).

What is most valuable?

  • Optimal calculations for storage systems for operation and backup on DCV, HCI
  • Stability and VM loading of the data center.

We have problems with IOPS calculations real-time, uncontrollable IOPS of storage leads to storage infrastructure errors.

What needs improvement?

The additional features are:

  • Running control of both network and IOPS on physical infrastructure
  • Predicting compatibility requirements to transfer resources from physical to virtual to meet backup RPO and RTO within 15 minutes
  • Especially adding application objects to backup VM cluster (Oracle RAC, SQL cluster, AD delegation, Exchange DAG, MySQL Cluster).

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.
