The ability of instant VM recovery is the most valuable feature. It is more stable then most other solutions in this area.
Pros and Cons
  • "The ability of instant VM recovery, which means starting the backup VM and getting it online while the recovery is still happening is the most valuable feature."

How has it helped my organization?

One of our customers was hit by a ransomware attack shortly after they implemented the multi-tier backup with Veeam. They were able to recover 10.000+ files almost instantly and never lost more then 2 hours of work.

    What is most valuable?

The ability of instant VM recovery, which means starting the backup VM and getting it online while the recovery is still happening is the most valuable feature. Also, the ability to construct a multi-tier backup system, where the final backups can even be stored on tape.

It is the best product for backup of virtualised servers, individual VMs and single servers. The product is getting even better by being able to back up single files as well

    What needs improvement?

Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive. I've had customers shying away from Veeam because of the price tag attached to the version they really wanted. For one host with 2 CPUs (very common these days) Enterprise Plus costs $1900, and we are talking about virtualisation hosts so there will be a couple of them.

Now that Veeam has announced new versions and features I fear the price will go up even more.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is more stable then most other solutions in this area. We have not had any complaints in five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Up to Version 9 we could not backup to tape, which was a show-stopper for some companies. The ability to backup encrypted VMs to Azure or AWS cloud infratructure eliminates all scalability issues.

How are customer service and support?

We seldom contact support, but in the cases we do, I’d give it a 9, 10 being the best.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are consulting customers who have special needs in backup situations (among other stuff). Veeam was always the best solution to backup VMs and with continuing virtualisation this became more important. Now that we can do file level backup as well, we expect more customers moving to Veeam.

    How was the initial setup?

It is very easy to implement Veeam and relatively easy to get good results initially. However, as with every backup solution, it can get very complex very fast, so consulting and planning is needed with regard of more complex setups.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are partnered with Veeam, so always get a consulting company for good prices and help with the planning and setup.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have experience in many backup solutions, including IBM Tivoli, Avamar, and Zerto. They have their purpose but are more specialised/complex and mostly more expensive.

What other advice do I have?

Get a consulting company to look at your setup and needs. Have them evaluate more than one backup solution and have them run a proof-of-concept so you can get a good grasp of the products. Test the two best ones, then choose the winner.

Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer. We are Veeam Partner, we also have trained Veeam teachers. We are not biased towards Veeam, but it is our backup tool of choice for most setups.

Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery.
    Pros and Cons
    • "Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery."
    • "Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources."

How has it helped my organization?

We had an issue with power in the data center and one of the IBM storage devices could not startup. We managed to restore all of the VMs from Veeam and disaster recovery was executed as expected within our SLA.

    What is most valuable?

Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery.

    What needs improvement?

    • Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources.
    • They could look at different ways to replicate only new changes or blocks.
    • If we have to use Veeam for disaster recovery, we need to make sure that we can at least have up to 10 or 15 minutes of data before a disaster happens. Currently, you can have replication but this uses/eats up a lot of resources, on the network. Is there any other way they could increase RPO with less or limited network resources being used?

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We did have stability issues and we had to contact technical support. They were very helpful.

How are customer service and technical support?

    Technical support is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn’t have any previous tools for this.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. We did quite a bit of research and lab testing before the actual implementation. The white papers where very helpful

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at Zerto and Acronis.

What other advice do I have?

If they are looking for backup and recovery, Veeam is the way to go. If they are looking for a high RPO and RTO, Zerto is the way to go.

Running the virtual machine from within the backup gives us the chance to test the machine before restoring it.

    What is most valuable?

Running the virtual machine from within the backup gives us the chance to test the machine before restoring it.

How has it helped my organization?

In the past, we were using another backup product. We used it to restore the machine multiple times, until we reached the required version of the machines. This process takes a very long time to finish.

    What needs improvement?

I am looking for the ability to:

    • Backup physical machines
    • Backup exchange mailboxes and retrieve a message in a mailbox
    • Backup SQL servers and retrieve a record in a table
    • Backup the Active Directory and retrieve a single object

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Veeam for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not encountered any issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not had any issues with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

The support staff team is perfect. I hope they keep that level of perfection.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The features in Veeam are much better than in the other products.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup was straightforward and the pre-sales engineer helped us a lot to set up the product according to best practices.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

According to the features, I believe it has a reasonable price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

    We evaluated Veeam ONE.

What other advice do I have?

I am already telling others that I use this solution when I meet them in conferences and meetings.

Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

VM backup and ease of use are the most valuable features.

    What is most valuable?

VM backup and ease of use are the most valuable features.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps the discovery of the new VM. It allows me to use the same tools when we decided to move from VMware to Hyper-V.

    What needs improvement?

The physical system support needs improvement. I know that the latest version has this feature, but it was too late as I am already using it for three years. For the time being, I have used another backup software (EMC NetWorker) and they seem to catch up a lot during the past few years.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is good so far; hopefully, we will not have any problems.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

If one day the EMC NetWorker will offer same features, then I will have to switch as they offer more than what I want.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup looks simple, you set it up once and forget .

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If they can give more add-ons (such as training) for the pricing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at EMC NetWorker and Veritas NetBackup.

What other advice do I have?

    Keep it up.

Creates backups from storage snapshots. The heavy client is still needed to perform advanced tasks.
    Pros and Cons
    • "Replication Job base on a source HPE Catalyst store to perform a full reconstruction of our production systems on our third datacenter, which is our DRP Site."
    • "We would like to have the ability to perform more things on the web interface. The heavy client is still needed to perform advanced tasks."

How has it helped my organization?

No time has to be spent on debugging backups. We know everything works just fine and we can focus on our business.

    What is most valuable?

    • Backup from storage snapshots. We are using 3PAR full flash arrays. This allows us to have nearly no impact on our production workloads.
    • Backup Copy Job integrated to HPE Catalyst to copy our backups to our third Datacenter with the best timeframe
    • Replication Job base on a source HPE Catalyst store to perform a full reconstruction of our production systems on our third datacenter, which is our DRP Site.
    • SureReplica jobs which allow us to fully test our DRP with really minimum effort and in a timely manner.
    • Item-level recovery for Active Directory

    What needs improvement?

We would like to have the ability to perform more things on the web interface. The heavy client is still needed to perform advanced tasks.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were minor stability issues that were quickly solved by the support team.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    We had no scalability issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We started with Veeam since the beginning. We are a startup.

    How was the initial setup?

It is very straightforward and easy setup. Kind of Next, Next, Next, and finish. You need some time to plan the architecture (sizing and role placement) and then it is easy to deploy.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options. We knew what we wanted.

What other advice do I have?

The Availability Suite is a good choice because of Veeam ONE, which gives you visibility on the whole infrastructure stack as well as reporting about how backups are doing.

Just try it with the free trial license key to form your own opinion. Each business has specific needs, so you need to evaluate the product by yourself. Since the setup is very easy for a PoC, you should definitively give it a try. It out performs our expectations.

Its ease of use and simple UI are the most valuable features.

    What is most valuable?

Its ease of use is the most valuable feature. It has a very simple UI.

How has it helped my organization?

Veeam is a very stable product. The ease of use and UI are some of its highlights. Learning this tool is very easy and you do not need any training classes.

    What needs improvement?

Right now, replication it does in every 15 minutes. However, if it could do continuous replication or even bring it down to 5 minutes, then it would be great.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used the first version and stopped using it for a while, due to many physical servers in our environment. I have been using the new version for almost a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues that could not be resolved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    There were no scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is excellent; they are very prompt and knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using another solution before this one. The reason we moved over to this solution was that we were only 30% virtualized, so we had to use a product that had backup physical servers.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup was very straightforward and any technical person can do the initial setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing is per CPU, so it depends on the number of physical CPUs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Based on my previous experience with Veeam, I didn’t evaluate anything else.

What other advice do I have?

It is a very solid product with an easy UI. If you are 90% virtualized, then it is a great product.

We are able to assure greater uptime for our servers and clients.
    Pros and Cons
    • "With Replication, Veeam allows us to have a duplicated VM on standby."
    • "The physical server backups and direct storage connectivity need improvement."

How has it helped my organization?

With Veeam Backup and Replication, we have closed the time it would take to recover from a VM failure. We are able to assure greater uptime for our servers and clients.

    What is most valuable?

With Replication, Veeam allows us to have a duplicated VM on standby.

In the event that we need to failover to the replicated VM, Veeam allows a very simple and fast procedure to do so.

    What needs improvement?

The physical server backups and direct storage connectivity need improvement.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability has not been an issue. In my experience, it has been very reliable and stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have directly not encountered any scalability issues. We have a few dedicated Veeam Backup and Replication servers in our environment. Veeam Backup and Replication allows “proxy” servers to enable the scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

The few times that I’ve had to call Veeam support, it has been a pleasant experience. They are courteous and professional; they handled each case satisfactorily.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were not using any other solution prior to this one. We have used Veeam since the start of our data center virtualization.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup and integration were very straightforward. Setting up a few jobs was a little more complex, but that was due to the complexity as to how the VM needed to be backed up and where it was being backed up to.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I always tell others upfront that the licensing is based on the number of host CPUs. I also explain how easy it is to recover VM data or the entire VM and to take that into consideration when looking at the pricing.

What other advice do I have?

Be sure to size your backup data volumes correctly. Whatever you think is enough, you will soon need more than what it may seem initially.

The SQL table-level restore helps the customer to restore a single table instead of the entire database.

    What is most valuable?

There are many features that include the SQL table-level restore, Instant VM Recovery, and SureBackup, which are valuable to us.

    • SQL table-level restore: It helps the customer to restore a single table instead of the entire database which reduces the backup window dramatically.
    • Instant VM Recovery: It helps in case of a VM crash down.
    • SureBackup: You are assured that your backup is recoverable.

How has it helped my organization?

We are a MSP and we deliver the best solutions to our customers.

Veeam was one of the key products available for the virtualized environment.

    What needs improvement?

They have to expand their operations for the physical environment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues. If VMware works fine, then you wont face any issues with Veeam.

How are customer service and technical support?

Since they don’t have any technical support center in India, I would like to rate it a 5 out of 10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

As I have mentioned earlier, we are a MSP and we design solutions according to the customer's needs.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is reasonable and the product is worth investing in.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were evaluating Arcserve for the virtual environment. However, Veaam has better adaptability towards the virtual environment.

What other advice do I have?

VMware = Veeam is the best backup and replication solution.
Microsoft Hyper-V = Veeam is the best backup and replication solution.
