Simple interface for small businesses with poor equipment integration
Pros and Cons
  • "A simple and stable solution for small businesses that use virtualization."
  • "Integration with other equipment could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider company and have several support contracts with our customers. We try to select the best solution for each of them. In a small environment, we prefer using Veeam Backup. It's useful in many small businesses where they use virtualization.

What is most valuable?

We use Veeam because it's easy to use. The interface is very simple.

What needs improvement?

Integration with the other equipment could be improved. For example, Tape Autoloader integrating with other storage products that are customized for backup solutions, or EMC Data Domain integrating with NetApp storage. Backup solutions today have a critical role in many data centers. We face a lot of malware attacks and ransomware. I think backup solutions are critical and this backup solution should be flexible.

It would be great to work with other solutions and new technologies like Kubernetes, or Docker integrating with private cloud solutions such as Azure, Google, or OpenStack. Veeam is not as efficient as Veritas NetBackup.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Veeam for more than six or seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

If you have a simple environment, Veeam is useful, but when it comes to scalability and you have a more complex environment, it isn't a good solution for advanced customers that want business continuity or have more complex data centers. For example, if you have three data centers and you're looking for replication between them, or you want to replicate your backup, Veeam isn't the most useful.

How was the initial setup?

This solution can be set up without any external support and it can be done in many environments. In general, we didn't have any problems with installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing for Veeam is very reasonable compared to Veritas or other products in my care. It suits many customers.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Between Veeam and Veritas Backup, Veritas is a unique product in several aspects. When you want to transfer your data over SAN, backup is needed and the solution in some environments is very important because window time is limited for them. When it's a huge amount of data that takes five or six hours a day to transfer, we have to use the SAN backup feature. In this area, Veeam isn't as good as Veritas NetBackup.

When you want to use this feature with Veeam, you have to share a lot of storage and many customers refuse this way of using the SAN backup feature. You can miss it easily. Many customers prefer compromising their source of data than using a SAN backup. For this reason, like IBM TSM, Veritas is one of the best.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution a six out of ten.

Simple setup, integrates well, but backup compression could improve
Pros and Cons
  • "The integration of Veeam Backup Replication is very good."

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The Veeam Backup Replication initial setup was very easy.

Easy to use and manage
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's best features are its ease of use and replication."

What is most valuable?

The solution's best features are its ease of use and replication, which works fine. Its environments are good. It is easy to manage and allows one to easily migrate in different data center sites and firewalls.
